Plasmon induced magneto-optical enhancement in metallic Ag/FeCo core/shell nanoparticles synthesized by colloidal chemistry

Synthesis and Characterization of Magnetoplasmonic Air-Stable Au@FeCo

The synthesis of FeCo alloys as highly magnetic nanoparticles has been valuable, as far as applications for magnetic nanoparticles are concerned. However, recently, a field of magnetoplasmonics in which magnetic nanoparticles such as the FeCo alloys doped with plasmonic materials such as Au and Ag to create a hybrid nanostructure with both properties has emerged. These magnetoplasmonic metamaterials have greatly enhanced the limit of detection of analytes in spectroscopic methods, as well as providing a more widely applicable nanoparticle to broaden the use of FeCo alloys even further. Herein, we discuss the synthesis of high-yield and fairly monodisperse spherical FeCo and Au-doped FeCo (Au@FeCo) with varying compositions of Au synthesized via the thermal decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)₅) and dicobalt octacarbonyl (Co₂(CO)₈), followed by the addition of Au atoms using triphenylphosphine gold(I) chloride ((Ph₃P)AuCl) via both coprecipitation and by delayed addition methods. The products were separated using a hand-held magnet, and then characterized via ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS), and magnetization measurements. Optical studies revealed a plasmonic peak at 550 nm in the Au@FeCo nanoparticles that had a gold content (%Au) of >2% (by weight), determined using F-AAS. Colocation of the Fe, Co, and Au were demonstrated through EDX analysis. Location of the Au atoms in the core were seen through high-resolution bright-field imaging. To understand the use of these nanoparticles for potential application in therapeutics and/or electronics, resistance measurements were performed to assess power loss as a function of frequency. We also achieved magnetization values as high as 150 emu/g and as low as 50 emu/g for gold-loaded samples based on %Au by weight. This paves the way to continue to develop magneto-plasmonic structures chemically using these synthesis strategies.

Fe3O4-SiO2 Mesoporous Core/Shell Nanoparticles for Magnetic Field-Induced Ibuprofen-Controlled Release

Hybrid magnetic nanoparticles made up of an iron oxide, Fe₃O₄, core and a mesoporous SiO₂ shell with high magnetization and a large surface area were proposed as an efficient drug delivery platform. The core/shell structure was synthesized by two seed-mediated growth steps combining solvothermal and sol-gel approaches and using organic molecules as a porous scaffolding template. The system presents a mean particle diameter of 30(5) nm (9 nm magnetic core diameter and 10 nm silica shell thickness) with superparamagnetic behavior, saturation magnetization of 32 emu/g, and a significant AC magnetic-field-induced heating response (SAR = 63 W/g_Fe3O4, measured at an amplitude of 400 Oe and a frequency of 307 kHz). Using ibuprofen as a model drug, the specific surface area (231 m²/g) of the porous structure exhibits a high molecule loading capacity (10 wt %), and controlled drug release efficiency (67%) can be achieved using the external AC magnetic field for short time periods (5 min), showing faster and higher drug desorption compared to that of similar stimulus-responsive iron oxide-based nanocarriers. In addition, it is demonstrated that the magnetic field-induced drug release shows higher efficiency compared to that of the sustained release at fixed temperatures (47 and 53% for 37 and 42 °C, respectively), considering that the maximum temperature reached during the exposure to the magnetic field is well below (31 °C). Therefore, it can be hypothesized that short periods of exposure to the oscillating field induce much greater heating within the nanoparticles than in the external solution.

Magnetoplasmonics beyond Metals: Ultrahigh Sensing Performance in Transparent Conductive Oxide Nanocrystals

Active modulation of the plasmonic response is at the forefront of today's research in nano-optics. For a fast and reversible modulation, external magnetic fields are among the most promising approaches. However, fundamental limitations of metals hamper the applicability of magnetoplasmonics in real-life active devices. While improved magnetic modulation is achievable using ferromagnetic or ferromagnetic-noble metal hybrid nanostructures, these suffer from severely broadened plasmonic response, ultimately decreasing their performance. Here we propose a paradigm shift in the choice of materials, demonstrating for the first time the outstanding magnetoplasmonic performance of transparent conductive oxide nanocrystals with plasmon resonance in the near-infrared. We report the highest magneto-optical response for a nonmagnetic plasmonic material employing F- and In-codoped CdO nanocrystals, due to the low carrier effective mass and the reduced plasmon line width. The performance of state-of-the-art ferromagnetic nanostructures in magnetoplasmonic refractometric sensing experiments are exceeded, challenging current best-in-class localized plasmon-based approaches.

Hardening of Cobalt Ferrite Nanoparticles by Local Crystal Strain Release: Implications for Rare Earth Free Magnets

In this work, we demonstrate that the reduction of the local internal stress by a low-temperature solvent-mediated thermal treatment is an effective post-treatment tool for magnetic hardening of chemically synthesized nanoparticles. As a case study, we used nonstoichiometric cobalt ferrite particles of an average size of 32(8) nm synthesized by thermal decomposition, which were further subjected to solvent-mediated annealing at variable temperatures between 150 and 320 °C in an inert atmosphere. The postsynthesis treatment produces a 50% increase of the coercive field, without affecting neither the remanence ratio nor the spontaneous magnetization. As a consequence, the energy product and the magnetic energy storage capability, key features for applications as permanent magnets and magnetic hyperthermia, can be increased by ca. 70%. A deep structural, morphological, chemical, and magnetic characterization reveals that the mechanism governing the coercive field improvement is the reduction of the concomitant internal stresses induced by the low-temperature annealing postsynthesis treatment. Furthermore, we show that the medium where the mild annealing process occurs is essential to control the final properties of the nanoparticles because the classical annealing procedure (T > 350 °C) performed on a dried powder does not allow the release of the lattice stress, leading to the reduction of the initial coercive field. The strategy here proposed, therefore, constitutes a method to improve the magnetic properties of nanoparticles, which can be particularly appealing for those materials, as is the case of cobalt ferrite, currently investigated as building blocks for the development of rare-earth free permanent magnets.

The potential of surface nano-engineering in characteristics of cobalt-based nanoparticles and biointerface interaction with prokaryotic and human cells

Cobalt-based nanoparticles (CBNPs) have recently received great attention in biomedical studies; however, the possible biotoxicity of these nanoparticles (NPs) has remained a foremost concern that should be addressed. As surface functionalization is one of the helpful proposed solutions, we aimed to apply Lipoamino acids (LAAs) as a coating agent to improve biocompatibility. To this purpose, cobalt oxide, cobalt ferrite, and iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) were synthesized with and without 2-amino-hexadecanoic acid coating to assess the impacts of LAA coating on characteristics and biocompatibility of CBNPs in human cells and compare with IONs, a widely used magnetic NPs in biomedicine. Antibacterial activities of NPs were evaluated against four Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria species to assess their biointerface interaction with prokaryotic cells. In addition, the antibacterial activities of synthesized NPs were compared to silver NPs, one of the widely used antimicrobial NPs and standard antibiotics (ampicillin). The structural characteristics properties of NPs were analyzed using TEM, FE-SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, and VSM. These NPs exhibited sphere-like to polygon-like morphology with desirable mean size. CBNPs displayed dose-dependent cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activities against human cell lines and all tested microbial species, as well as more cytotoxicity and bacterial inhibition compared to IONs. Besides, the results revealed that LAA coating could significantly improve the biocompatibility and antibacterial activity of NPs while impacting magnetic properties. To sum up, it seems that surface functionalization could provide more potent tools for bioapplications with improving biocompatibility and bacterial inhibition of CBNPs, though; further studies are needed in this regard.

Star-Shaped Magnetic-Plasmonic Au@Fe3O4 Nano-Heterostructures for Photothermal Therapy

Here, we synthesize a Au@Fe3O4 core@shell system with a highly uniform unprecedented star-like shell morphology with combined plasmonic and magnetic properties. An advanced electron microscopy characterization allows assessing the multifaceted nature of the Au core and its role in the growth of the peculiar epitaxial star-like shell with excellent crystallinity and homogeneity. Magnetometry and magneto-optical spectroscopy revealed a pure magnetite shell, with a superior saturation magnetization compared to similar Au@Fe3O4 heterostructures reported in the literature, which is ascribed to the star-like morphology, as well as to the large thickness of the shell. Of note, Au@Fe3O4 nanostar-loaded cancer cells displayed magneto-mechanical stress under a low frequency external alternating magnetic field (few tens of Hz). On the other hand, such a uniform, homogeneous, and thick magnetite shell enables the shift of the plasmonic resonance of the Au core to 640 nm, which is the largest red shift achievable in Au@Fe3O4 homogeneous core@shell systems, prompting application in photothermal therapy and optical imaging in the first biologically transparent window. Preliminary experiments performing irradiation of a stable water suspension of the nanostar and Au@Fe3O4-loaded cancer cell culture suspension at 658 nm confirmed their optical response and their suitability for photothermal therapy. The outstanding features of the prepared system can be thus potentially exploited as a multifunctional platform for magnetic-plasmonic applications.

Synergistic Dual-Atom Molecular Catalyst Derived from Low-Temperature Pyrolyzed Heterobimetallic Macrocycle-N4 Corrole Complex for Oxygen Reduction

A heterobimetallic corrole complex, comprising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) active non-precious metals Co and Fe with a corrole-N4 center (PhFCC), is successfully synthesized and used to prepare a dual-atom molecular catalyst (DAMC) through subsequent low-temperature pyrolysis. This low-temperature pyrolyzed electrocatalyst exhibited impressive ORR performance, with onset potentials of 0.86 and 0.94 V, and half-wave potentials of 0.75 and 0.85 V, under acidic and basic conditions, respectively. During potential cycling, this DAMC displayed half-wave potential losses of only 25 and 5 mV under acidic and alkaline conditions after 3000 cycles, respectively, demonstrating its excellent stability. Single-cell Nafion-based proton exchange membrane fuel cell performance using this DAMC as the cathode catalyst showed a maximum power density of 225 mW cm^-2 , almost close to that of most metal-N4 macrocycle-based catalysts. The present study showed that preservation of the defined CoN4 structure along with the cocatalytic Fe-Cx site synergistically acted as a dual ORR active center to boost overall ORR performance. The development of DAMC from a heterobimetallic CoN4-macrocyclic system using low-temperature pyrolysis is also advantageous for practical applications.

Dielectric Effects in FeO x -Coated Au Nanoparticles Boost the Magnetoplasmonic Response: Implications for Active Plasmonic Devices

Plasmon resonance modulation with an external magnetic field (magnetoplasmonics) represents a promising route for the improvement of the sensitivity of plasmon-based refractometric sensing. To this purpose, an accurate material choice is needed to realize hybrid nanostructures with an improved magnetoplasmonic response. In this work, we prepared core@shell nanostructures made of an 8 nm Au core surrounded by an ultrathin iron oxide shell (≤1 nm). The presence of the iron oxide shell was found to significantly enhance the magneto-optical response of the noble metal in the localized surface plasmon region, compared with uncoated Au nanoparticles. With the support of an analytical model, we ascribed the origin of the enhancement to the shell-induced increase in the dielectric permittivity around the Au core. The experiment points out the importance of the spectral position of the plasmonic resonance in determining the magnitude of the magnetoplasmonic response. Moreover, the analytical model proposed here represents a powerful predictive tool for the quantification of the magnetoplasmonic effect based on resonance position engineering, which has significant implications for the design of active magnetoplasmonic devices.

Nitride-Oxide-Metal Heterostructure with Self-Assembled Core-Shell Nanopillar Arrays: Effect of Ordering on Magneto-Optical Properties

Magneto-optical (MO) coupling incorporates photon-induced change of magnetic polarization that can be adopted in ultrafast switching, optical isolators, mode convertors, and optical data storage components for advanced optical integrated circuits. However, integrating plasmonic, magnetic, and dielectric properties in one single material system poses challenges since one natural material can hardly possess all these functionalities. Here, co-deposition of a three-phase heterostructure composed of a durable conductive nitride matrix with embedded core-shell vertically aligned nanopillars, is demonstrated. The unique coupling between ferromagnetic NiO core and atomically sharp plasmonic Au shell enables strong MO activity out-of-plane at room temperature. Further, a template growth process is applied, which significantly enhances the ordering of the nanopillar array. The ordered nanostructure offers two schemes of spin polarization which result in stronger antisymmetry of Kerr rotation. The presented complex hybrid metamaterial platform with strong magnetic and optical anisotropies is promising for tunable and modulated all-optical-based nanodevices.

Enhanced magnetic modulation of light polarization exploiting hybridization with multipolar dark plasmons in magnetoplasmonic nanocavities

Enhancing magneto-optical effects is crucial for reducing the size of key photonic devices based on the non-reciprocal propagation of light and to enable active nanophotonics. Here, we disclose a currently unexplored approach that exploits hybridization with multipolar dark modes in specially designed magnetoplasmonic nanocavities to achieve a large enhancement of the magneto-optically induced modulation of light polarization. The broken geometrical symmetry of the design enables coupling with free-space light and hybridization of the multipolar dark modes of a plasmonic ring nanoresonator with the dipolar localized plasmon resonance of the ferromagnetic disk placed inside the ring. This hybridization results in a low-radiant multipolar Fano resonance that drives a strongly enhanced magneto-optically induced localized plasmon. The large amplification of the magneto-optical response of the nanocavity is the result of the large magneto-optically induced change in light polarization produced by the strongly enhanced radiant magneto-optical dipole, which is achieved by avoiding the simultaneous enhancement of re-emitted light with incident polarization by the multipolar Fano resonance. The partial compensation of the magneto-optically induced polarization change caused by the large re-emission of light with the original polarization is a critical limitation of the magnetoplasmonic designs explored thus far and that is overcome by the approach proposed here.

The Role of Magnetic Nanoparticles in Cancer Nanotheranostics

Technological development is in constant progress in the oncological field. The search for new concepts and strategies for improving cancer diagnosis, treatment and outcomes constitutes a necessary and continuous process, aiming at more specificity, efficiency, safety and better quality of life of the patients throughout the treatment. Nanotechnology embraces these purposes, offering a wide armamentarium of nanosized systems with the potential to incorporate both diagnosis and therapeutic features, towards real-time monitoring of cancer treatment. Within the nanotechnology field, magnetic nanosystems stand out as complex and promising nanoparticles with magnetic properties, that enable the use of these constructs for magnetic resonance imaging and thermal therapy purposes. Additionally, magnetic nanoparticles can be tailored for increased specificity and reduced toxicity, and functionalized with contrast, targeting and therapeutic agents, revealing great potential as multifunctional nanoplatforms for application in cancer theranostics. This review aims at providing a comprehensive description of the current designs, characterization techniques, synthesis methods, and the role of magnetic nanoparticles as promising nanotheranostic agents. A critical appraisal of the impact, potentialities and challenges associated with each technology is also presented.

Alloy, Janus and core-shell nanoparticles: numerical modeling of their nucleation and growth in physical synthesis

While alloy, core-shell and Janus binary nanoclusters are found in more and more technological applications, their formation mechanisms are still poorly understood, especially during synthesis methods involving physical approaches. In this work, we employ a very simple model of such complex systems using Lennard-Jones interactions and inert gas quenching. After demonstrating the ability of the model to well reproduce the formation of alloy, core-shell or Janus nanoparticles, we studied their temporal evolution from the gas via droplets to nanocrystalline particles. In particular, we showed that the growth mechanisms exhibit qualitative differences between these three chemical orderings. Then, we determined how the quenching rate can be used to finely tune structural characteristics of the final nanoparticles, including size, shape and crystallinity.

Magnetic-Plasmonic Heterodimer Nanoparticles: Designing Contemporarily Features for Emerging Biomedical Diagnosis and Treatments

Magnetic-plasmonic heterodimer nanostructures synergistically present excellent magnetic and plasmonic characteristics in a unique platform as a multipurpose medium for recently invented biomedical applications, such as magnetic hyperthermia, photothermal therapy, drug delivery, bioimaging, and biosensing. In this review, we briefly outline the less-known aspects of heterodimers, including electronic composition, interfacial morphology, critical properties, and present concrete examples of recent progress in synthesis and applications. With a focus on emerging features and performance of heterodimers in biomedical applications, this review provides a comprehensive perspective of novel achievements and suggests a fruitful framework for future research.

Polyelectrolyte-Stabilised Magnetic-Plasmonic Nanocomposites

In this work, new magnetic-plasmonic nanocomposites have been developed through the use of two complementary polyelectrolytes⁻polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). PSS, a negatively charged polyelectrolyte, was utilized as a stabiliser for magnetite nanoparticles, and PAH, a positively charged polyelectrolyte, was used to stabilize gold nanoparticles. The combination of these two entities resulted in a magnetic-plasmonic nanocomposite that is highly reproducible and scalable. This approach was found to work for a variety of PSS concentrations. The produced magnetic-plasmonic nanomaterials have been characterized by vibrational sample magnetometry (VSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. These nanocomposite materials have the potential to be used in a variety of biological applications including bioseparation and biosensing.
