Precision Methanol Sensing: Integrating Chemical Insights of Optical Sensors for Enhanced Detection

Methanol has become a very important part of many industries, ranging from chemical production and pharmaceuticals to automotive and electronics manufacturing as a result of which methanol usage has spiked in recent years. But this exponential increase asks for precise detection methods as methanol has not only detrimental effects on environment but it is very dangerous to human health even if consumed in a minute amount .This paper will explore the unique physical and chemical properties of methanol which can be exploited to make it a target for different mechanisms such as H-Bonding, induced self-assembly, Internal Charge Transfer (ICT), Aggregation-induced emission (AIE), conformational flexibility, keto-enol tautomerization, adsorption etc. by various small molecule and nano-particles. Informative studies on small molecules involves functionalized pentacenequinone derivatives, luminogens, ligands and fluorescent probes which can be used to detect methanol by change in color or intensity which can be easily detected in real time and is portable. On the other hand, nanoparticle-based probes reveal the use of materials like chitosan/zinc, sulfide composites, Quantum Dots (QDs) hybrids, graphene polyoxides, Ag-LaFeO3 etc. which provides with selective and sensitive methanol optical and conductometric sensing. This paper acknowledges the contributions of various studies and researchers who contributed to advancing the field of methanol sensing, providing a foundation for future developments.

Vinylene-linked diketopyrrolopyrrole chromophores for electrochromism

We report a novel series of vinylene-linked DPP compounds (1-5) formed via Knoevenagel condensation of dimethyl DPP (6) with various aromatic aldehydes. Incorporating the vinylene linkage and photo- and electro-active groups offered the distinct advantage of extending π-delocalization, resulting in deep-coloured solids with absorption maxima extending to 620-680 nm and low redox potentials. The DPP-triphenylamine compound (5) showed electrochromism in the near-infrared region. The colour of the solution changed from blue to green, and the absorption from 680 nm to 740 nm, leading to NIR-to-NIR absorption switching. This system exhibits rapid switching, swift response times (1.4 s and 1.2 s), and reversibility in electrochromic behaviour.

Four Slip-Stacked Arrangements, Three Types of Photophysics: Crystal Structure and Solid-State Fluorescence of 3,6-Diaryl Substituted Furo[3,4-c]furanone Polymorphs and Regioisomers

Six symmetrical 3,6-diaryl (aryl=phenyl, 2-, 3- and 4-tolyl, 2,4- and 3,5-xylyl) substituted furo[3,4-c]furanones (DFF) were synthesized. The computational analysis, based on density functional theory, found eight possible centrosymmetrical slipped π-stack arrangements, formed according to electron repulsion minimization principle, as for previously reported for π-isoelectronic diketopyrrolopyrroles (DPP). One of these slipped stack arrangements was found to form infinite columns in the crystals of a new polymorph of parent phenyl derivative (with centre-to-centre distance CC=6.975 Å), other three types of stacks were found for 3-tolyl (CC=6.153 Å), 4-tolyl (CC=3.849 Å) and 2,4-xylyl (CC=4.856 Å) derivatives by single crystal X-ray diffractometry. All six derivatives show intense solution fluorescence in blue/green region, with a maximum driven entirely by a number and position of methyl substituents on phenyl rings. On the other hand, the solid-state fluorescence from yellow over orange to red is observed only for four derivatives and its presence/absence, spectral position and vibronic structure is driven exclusively by the slips in π-stacks (with interplanar distance always less than 3.5 Å) of almost planar DFF molecules, resulting in J-type emission, H-type excimer-like emission and H-type quenching.

Aggregation Modes of Chiral Diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole Dyes in Solution and Thin Films

The chiroptical features of chiral diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP) derivatives have been only marginally investigated to date. In this regard, we have synthesized ad hoc four chiral DPP dyes, functionalized with enantiopure alkyl groups from natural sources either on the lactam moieties or on the terminal positions of the π-conjugated backbone, to promote an efficient self-assembly into chiral supramolecular structures. For each of them, the aggregation modes has been investigated by absorbance and ECD spectroscopies in conditions of solution aggregation and on thin films, considering the effects of deposition technique (drop casting vs. spin coating) and post-deposition operations (solvent and thermal annealing). The effect of the structure of lateral π-conjugated units attached to the central DPP scaffold, as well as that of the position of the alkyl chiral group, has been assessed. ECD revealed superior capability, compared to absorbance spectroscopy, to provide information on the aggregation modes and to detect the possible co-existence of multiple aggregation pathways.

A donor-π-acceptor aggregation-induced emission compound serving as a portable fluorescent sensor for detection and differentiation of methanol and ethanol in the gas phase

The design strategy of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorophores with donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) conjugation structure has greatly contributed to the development of luminescent materials and devices, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) sensors. In this work, a D-π-A fluorophore DEBAB was synthesized, showing both AIE and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties as confirmed by spectroscopic data and quantum chemical calculations. Furthermore, there is notable emission-enhancement when DEBAB is exposed to small-molecule alcohols, such as methanol and ethanol. Based on this phenomenon, a portable film sensor was fabricated, capable of detecting methanol and ethanol in gas phase, with detection limit (DL) as low as 8.02 ppm. Our systematic investigation suggests that hydrogen-bonding may be formed between DEBAB and alcohols, intensifying the AIE efficacy while influencing the ICT process. This working mechanism is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations including electrostatic potential mapping and molecular total energy. In addition, a sensor array was fabricated on a cellulose paper strip, showing different levels of emission changing in response to alcohols. Thus the detection and differentiation of methanol and ethanol are enabled.

Peripherical thioester functionalization induces J-aggregation in bithiophene-DPP films and nanoparticles

In this work we demonstrated that the peripherical thioacetylation of a bithiophene–DPP molecule can greatly influence the solid-state properties triggering the formation of NIR emitting J-aggregates in both bithiophene–DPP films and nanoparticles. The morphology and the kinetic and thermal stability of the organic nanoparticles were also investigated.

Sensing and modulation of amyloid fibrils by photo-switchable organic dots

Abnormal aggregation of amyloidogenic proteins (like Aβ 42, amylin, α-synuclein, insulin) and the deposition of these aggregates is believed to be associated with several diseases known as amyloidosis. The pathway of aggregation involves three distinct phases: the oligomeric, elongation and plateau phases. Among them, the oligomeric phase of Aβ 42 and α-synuclein involves the generation of transient oligomeric species suspected to cause several neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Over the past few years, scientists have devoted much more effort to devising new fluorescent molecular probes to estimate the mechanisms of formation, and have gained vital information about possible therapeutic routes for amyloidosis. However, such fluorescent probes face serious limitations because of self-quenching at high concentrations of the probe; therefore, they are inappropriate for quantitative analysis and bio-imaging experiments. Hence, smart biocompatible fluorescent probes are indispensable, as they not only overcome the drawbacks of conventional fluorescent probes, but also have the potential ability to fight amyloidosis through modulation of the pathways involved. In this work, for the first time we introduce a series of promising photo-switchable aggregation-induced emission (AIE) dots (DPAPMI, CPMI) and aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) dots (DMAPMI) which can detect amyloid fibrils in terms of switching and enhancing their fluorescence emission. Interestingly, the organic dots enhance the aggregation rate of insulin by speeding up the microscopic processes, specifically secondary nucleation (with rate constant k2) and the elongation process (with rate constant k+). Moreover, the comparison of kinetics studies with ThT suggests that our organic dots can sense pre-fibrillar aggregates of insulin during the aggregation process, which may be beneficial for the early detection of amyloid fibrils. In summary, our study indicates that these organic dots can be used for the imaging and early stage detection of amyloid fibril formation and the modulation of amyloid formation pathways.

Developments of Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Dye-Based Organic Semiconductors for a Wide Range of Applications in Electronics

In recent times, fused aromatic diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based functional semiconductors have attracted considerable attention in the developing field of organic electronics. Over the past few years, DPP-based semiconductors have demonstrated remarkable improvements in the performance of both organic field-effect transistor (OFET) and organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices due to the favorable features of the DPP unit, such as excellent planarity and better electron-withdrawing ability. Driven by this success, DPP-based materials are now being exploited in various other electronic devices including complementary circuits, memory devices, chemical sensors, photodetectors, perovskite solar cells, organic light-emitting diodes, and more. Recent developments in the use of DPP-based materials for a wide range of electronic devices are summarized, focusing on OFET, OPV, and newly developed devices with a discussion of device performance in terms of molecular engineering. Useful guidance for the design of future DPP-based materials and the exploration of more advanced applications is provided.
