Abstract
AbstractPolymers are ubiquitous materials that have driven technological innovation since the middle of the 20th century. As such, the logic that guides polymer synthesis merit considerable attention. Thus far, this logic has often been ‘forward-synthetic’, which constrains the accessible structures of polymer materials. In this article, we emphasize the benefits of ‘retrosynthetic’ logic and posit that the development of skeletal rearrangements of polymer backbones is central to the realization of this logic. To illustrate this point, we discuss two recent examples from our laboratory – Brook and Ireland–Claisen rearrangements of polymer backbones – and contextualize them in prior reports of sigmatropic rearrangements and skeletal rearrangements of polymers. We envision that further development of skeletal rearrangements of polymers will enable advances in not only the chemistry of such rearrangements and the logic of polymer synthesis, but also polymer re- and upcycling.

Abstract
Polymer modification is a fundamental scientific challenge, as a means of both upcycling plastics and extracting a stimulus response from them. To date, the overwhelming majority of polymer modifications has focused on the polymer periphery. Herein, we demonstrate nearly quantitative, scission-free modification of polymer backbones, namely, a metamorphosis of polyesters into vinyl polymers resembling commodity materials via the Ireland-Claisen sigmatropic rearrangement. The glass transition temperature (Tg) and thermal stability of the polyesters undergo dramatic changes post-transformation. Beyond polymer modification, our work advances the application of retrosynthetic analysis in polymer synthesis; the nontraditional production of vinyl polymers from lactones opens the door to a slew of previously inaccessible materials.

Abstract
A series of hyperbranched copolyimides (co-HBPIs), as the completely symmetrical tetraamine monomer successfully incorporated into the linear polyimide 6FDA-ODA, were synthesized under the chemical imidization after the gel formation was avoided, as to more effectively separate CO2/CH4. CO2/CH4 selectivity (74%) was observed to be improved significantly under 7‰ tetraamine contents at 2 bar and 35°C; thus, the acceptable CO2 permeability was maintained compared with the pure membrane, exceeding the 1991 upper bound. Moreover, the as-prepared membrane with 6FDA-ODA-7‰ was reported to exhibit higher CO2/CH4 selectivity (109.14) at 10 bar and 35°C. Accordingly, the hyperbranched copolyimides will be promising candidates as membrane materials for the further separation of CO2/CH4 gas pair.

Abstract
To improve the optical properties of polyimide (PI) films, we prepared two series of colorless transparent PIs from the dianhydride 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and a diamine, either 2,2-bis(3-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane (FDN) or 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxy-phenyl)hexafluoropropane (FDN-OH). Next, colorless PI (CPI) composite films were prepared by dispersing 0-1.00 wt % of organically modified clay (Cloisite 30B) in the intermediate poly(amic acid) (PAA) solution via solution intercalation, followed by imidization. The resultant CPI films had excellent optical transparency, which was achieved by reducing the charge-transfer effects by using a highly electronegative trifluoromethyl group and a kinked monomer structure. The thermal and mechanical properties, morphologies, and optical transparencies of the two as-synthesized CPI hybrid film series were investigated and compared. Electron microscopy observation of the two hybrid series revealed that the clay was well-dispersed with a nanoscale dispersion at all clay contents. However, agglomeration occurred at nanoclay loadings of 1.0 wt %. In addition, the effect of the presence of hydroxyl groups in the PI chain on various physical properties of the two CPI hybrids was also compared.

Abstract
A novel diamine bis(4-aminophenyl)bis{3,4[(4-(8-quinolyloxymethyl carbonyl)]}methane, containing two long/bulky aromatic pendent chains was synthesized by incorporating aromatic and hetero aromatic groups with flexible linkages. Flexible, stretchable, thermally stable and processable polyimides were prepared by reacting this newly synthesized diamine with commercial tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides like 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetra carboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA) and 4,4'-(4,4'-isopropylidenediphenoxy)diphthalic Anhydride (BPADA). Nanocomposites of polyimides were prepared using aromatic amine functionalized silica as a filler by solution casting method. The current work investigates the effects of incorporating long/bulky aromatic side chains and flexible linkages on the thermal, mechanical, electrical and optical properties of the polyimides and nanocomposites. The polyimides showed good thermal stability (T 10% = 364 & 388), high flame resistance, low glass transition temperatures (T g = 130 °C & 156 °C), very low dielectric constants (2.5 & 2.8 at 1 MHz) and good optical transparency. The neat polyimides displayed good elongation at break (133-155%) but possessed low tensile strength. The chemically imidized polyimides showed good solubility in low and high boiling solvents. Nanocomposites of polyimides based on aromatic amine functionalized silica exhibited enhanced properties with T 10% values varying between 409-482 °C, T g between 165-280 °C and higher dielectric constants (3-5.7 at 1 MHz).

Abstract
Spirobichroman-based polymers with high gas permeability and selectivity are promising for their applications as membranes in gas separation. In this study, three spirobichroman-based polyimides (PIs; 6FDA-FH, 6FDA-DH, and 6FDA-MH) were synthesised by the polyreaction between diamines containing different substituents (benzene ring, pyridine ring, and methyl group) and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)-diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). The physical properties, gas transport behaviour, d-spacing, dihedral angle of molecules, and fractional free volume of the PIs were investigated through experiments and molecular simulations. The PIs exhibited excellent thermal stability and good solubility in common organic solvents. The gas permeability of the PIs was investigated; the results highlighted the critical role of the substituents in the enhancement of the gas separation performance of polymer membranes. Detailed analysis of the PIs showed that 6FDA-FH exhibits the highest gas permeability. This can be ascribed to the loose packing of the polymer chain owing to the increased dihedral angle between the two planes. However, the methyl substituent in 6FDA-MH disrupts the polymer chain packing rather than changing the dihedral angle between the two planes, thus enhancing the gas permeability of 6FDA-MH. Furthermore, 6FDA-DH exhibited the highest CO2/CH4 selectivity, which is attributed to the CO2 affinity of the polymer containing the pyridine unit.

Abstract
[3,3]-Sigmatropic rearrangement is a powerful reaction to form C–C bonds stereospecifically; however, owing to intrinsic simultaneous bond formation and breakage, this versatile method has not been utilized in polymerization. Herein, we report a new tandem diaza-Cope rearrangement polymerization (DCRP) that can synthesize polymers with defect-free C–C bond formation from easy and efficient imine formation. A mechanistic investigation by in situ1H NMR experiments suggests that this polymerization proceeds by a rapid DCR process, forming an enantiospecific C–C bond that occurs almost simultaneously with imine formation. This polymerization produces not only highly stable polymers against hydrolysis due to resonance-assisted hydrogen bonds (RAHBs) but also chiral polymers containing enantiopure salen moieties, which lead to high-performance Zn2+-selective turn-on chemosensors with up to 73-fold amplification. We also found that their optical activities and sensing performances are heavily dependent on the reaction temperature, which significantly affects the stereoselectivity of DCR. Herein, we report a new tandem diaza-Cope rearrangement polymerization synthesizing enantiopure polymers with defect-free C–C bond formation. Furthermore, these polymers can be applied as high-performance turn-on Zn2+ sensors.![]()

Abstract
Herein, poly(amic acid) (PAA) was synthesized using 4,4’-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) as a dianhydride and 2,2-bis(3-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane (6FAm) and 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane (6FAm-OH) as diamines. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) at various contents (0–5.0 wt%) was blended with PAA to prepare a composite material. Then, colorless and transparent polyimide (CPI) composite films were prepared by applying various stages of heat treatment using the PAA/PVA blend film as a precursor. These film-type composites were immersed in water to completely dissolve PVA, a water-soluble polymer, and their pore sizes were investigated to determine their potential as a porous membrane. According to the results of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), as the concentration of PVA increased from 0 to 5.0 wt% in the CPI/PVA composite films, the size of the pores resulting from the dissolution of water-soluble PVA increased. Further, the micrometer-sized pores were uniformly dispersed in the CPI films. The thermal properties, morphology, and optical transparency of the two types of CPI membranes synthesized using 6FAm and 6FAm-OH monomers were examined and compared.

Abstract
The diamine monomer, 9,9-bis[4-(4-amino-3-hydroxylphenoxy)phenyl] fluorene (bis-AHPPF) was successfully synthesized according to our modified method. A series of hydroxyl-containing poly(ether-imide)s (HPEIs) were prepared by polycondensation of the bis-AHPPF diamine with six kinds of dianhydrides, including 1,2,3,4-cyclobutanetetracarboxylic dianhydride (CBDA), pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 3,3',4,4'-biphenyl tetracarboxylic diandhydride (BPDA), 3,3',4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidine)diphtalic anhydride (6FDA) followed by thermal imidization. The corresponding thermally rearranged (TR) membranes were obtained by solid state thermal treatment at high temperature under a nitrogen atmosphere. The chemical structure, and physical, thermal and mechanical properties of the HPEI precursors were characterized. The effects of heat treatment temperature and dianhydrides on the gas transport properties of the poly(ether-benzoxazole) (PEBO) membranes were also investigated. It was found that these HPEIs showed excellent thermal and mechanical properties. All the HPEI precursors underwent thermal conversion in a N2 atmosphere with low rearrangement temperatures. The gas permeabilities of the PEBO membranes increased with the increase of thermal treatment temperature. When HPEI-6FDA was treated at 450 °C for 1 h, the H2, CO2, O2 and N2 permeabilities of the membrane reached 239.6, 196.04, 46.41 and 9.25 Barrers coupled with a O2/N2 selectivity of 5.02 and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 21.19. In six TR-PEBOs, PEBO-6FDA exhibited the lowest rearrangement temperature and largest gas permeabilities. Therefore, thermally rearranged membranes from bis-AHPPF-based HPEIs are expected to be promising materials for gas separation.
