Palladium-Catalyzed Direct Esterification via C-H Bond Activation of Aldehydes

A concise and highly efficient synthesis method of direct esterification of aldehydes via Pd-catalyzed C-H bond activation of aldehyde group has been developed. The strategy avoids the preoxidation step of aldehyde or use of condensing agents in ester synthesis, which is not only applicable to various alcohols but also suitable for the esterification of phenolics which are usually difficult to be esterified. The methodology has the significant advantages of broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and nonrequirement of additional oxidants.

Ruthenium-catalyzed reductive amination of ketones with nitroarenes and nitriles

The Ru(dppbsa)-catalyzed reductive amination of ketones with nitroarenes and nitriles using H₂ as the environmentally benign hydrogen surrogate is developed in this study. Cross-experiments demonstrated that both reactions are initiated by the reduction of nitroarenes or nitriles to the corresponding amines, followed by condensation with ketones to give imines and thereafter hydrogenation. However, the route to the formation of an amino-ligated Ru complex during the reduction of nitroarenes or nitriles, followed by in situ nucleophilic C-N coupling, cannot be completely excluded. This newly developed versatile method features good functional group tolerance, which provides a novel design platform for homogeneous catalysts in constructing motifs of secondary amines.

Alcohol Synthesis by Cobalt-Catalyzed Visible-Light-Driven Reductive Hydroformylation

A cobalt-catalyzed reductive hydroformylation of terminal and 1,1-disubstituted alkenes is described. One-carbon homologated alcohols were synthesized directly from CO and H₂, affording anti-Markovnikov products (34-87% yield) with exclusive regiocontrol (linear/branch >99:1) for minimally functionalized alkenes. Irradiation of the air-stable cobalt hydride, (dcype)Co(CO)₂H (dcype = dicyclohexylphosphinoethane) with blue light generated the active catalyst that mediates alkene hydroformylation and subsequent aldehyde hydrogenation. Mechanistic origins of absolute regiocontrol were investigated by in situ monitoring of the tandem catalytic reaction using multinuclear NMR spectroscopy with syngas mixtures.
