Abstract
Recently, synthesized N-linked-disalicylaldehyde H2QJI probes have been used to detect heavy metal ions in the experiment conveniently. Nevertheless, there needs to be a more in-depth examination of the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism and photophysical properties of the probe. This work remedied it based on quantum chemistry calculations. We contained due hydrogen bond (O1-H2 ⋯ N3 and O4-H5 ⋯ O6) and then analyzed bond parameters, IR vibration spectra, and non-covalent interaction. The bond strength is enhanced under photoexcitation, and the former is significantly stronger. The calculated electron spectra are in agreement with the experimental values. The results of the S0 and S1 potential energy curves and IRC calculations also confirm the unique ESIPT behavior, which isan excited stated stepwise double proton transfer. The fluorescence, internal conversion, and intersystem crossing rate of KD molecules (twisted-, double proton transfer) were calculated respectively to reveal the radiative and non-radiative pathways. It proved that the corresponding spectra are not obtained since the electrons are mainly deactivated by the ISC (S1->T1). Furthermore, the interfragment charge transfer (IFCT) approach indicates that the molecule possesses twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) characteristics, which lead to the quenching of fluorescence introduction.

Abstract
Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) emission is associated with intense single or multiple fluorescence in the solid-state, along with enhanced photostability and sensitivity to the close environment. As a result, ESIPT probes are attractive candidates for ratiometric sensing of a variety of substrates. A new family of ESIPT fluorophores is described herein, inspired by the well-known 2-(2'hydroxyphenyl)benzazole (HBX) organic scaffold. The connection of 3,3'-dimethylindole (or 3H-indole) derivatives with phenol rings triggers the formation of novel 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-3,3'-dimethylindole (HDMI) fluorophores, capable of stimuli-responsive ESIPT emission. This brand new family of dyes displays redshifted emission, as compared to HBX, along with an unprecedented acid/base-mediated stabilization of different rotamers, owing to supramolecular interactions with methyl groups. These compounds are therefore highly sensitive to external stimuli, such as the presence of acid or base, where protonated and deprotonated species have specific optical signatures. Moreover, a new pyridine-functionalized HDMI dye displays acid-sensitive AIE properties. The photophysical properties of all compounds have also been studied using ab initio calculations to support experiments in deciphering the nature of the various radiative transitions observed and the related excited rotameric species.

Abstract
It is of great importance to understand the intrinsic relationship between phototautomerization and photoelectric properties for the exploration of novel organic materials. Here, in order to chemically control the protonation process, the aminated isoxazole derivative (2,2'-(isoxazolo[5,4-d]isoxazole-3,6-diyl)dibenzenaminium, DP-DA-DPIxz) with -N═ as the proton acceptor was designed to achieve the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state which was triggered by an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. This kind of protonation enhanced the intramolecular hydrogen bonding, conjugative effect, and steric hindrance effects, ensuring a barrierless spontaneous TICT process. Through the intramolecular proton transfer, the configuration torsion and conjugation dissociation of the DP-DA-DPIxz molecule was favored, which led to efficient charge separation and remarkable variations in light-emitting properties. We hope the present investigation will provide a new approach to design novel optoelectronic organic materials and shine light on the understanding of the charge transfer and separation process in molecular science.

Abstract
Phosgene, an exceptionally hazardous gas, poses a grave concern for the health and safety of the general public. The present study describes a fluorescent ratiometric probe for phosgene employing 2-(naphthalen-2-yl) benzo[d]oxazol-5-amine (NOA) with an amino group as the recognition site. NOA detects phosgene through the intramolecular charge transfer mechanism. The electron-rich amine group of NOA attacks the electrophilic carbonyl group of phosgene, resulting in a quick response within 20 s. NOA demonstrates a low detection limit of 60 nM while maintaining high selectivity and sensitivity toward phosgene. The final product was isolated and verified by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The probe can detect phosgene not just quickly in a solution environment but also in its solid state. The probe's applications in fingerprint imaging and bioimaging are also demonstrated.

Abstract
A rare example of pyrimidine-based ESIPT-capable compounds, 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-4-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-6-methylpyrimidine (HLH), was synthesized (ESIPT─excited state intramolecular proton transfer). Its reactions with zinc(II) salts under basic or acidic conditions afforded a dinuclear [Zn2LH2Cl2] complex and an ionic (H2LH)4[ZnCl4]2·3H2O solid. Another ionic solid, (H2LH)Br, was obtained from the solution of HLH acidified with HBr. In both ionic solids, the H+ ion protonates the same pyrimidinic N atom that accepts the O-H···N intramolecular hydrogen bond in the structure of free HLH, which breaks this hydrogen bond and switches off ESIPT in these compounds. This series of compounds which includes neutral HLH molecules and ionic (LH)- and (H2LH)+ species allowed us to elucidate the impact of protonation and coordination coupled deprotonation of HLH on the photoluminescence response and on altering the emission mechanism. The neutral HLH compound exhibits yellow emission as a result of the coexistence of two radiative decay channels: (i) T1 → S0 phosphorescence of the enol form and (ii) anti-Kasha S2 → S0 fluorescence of the keto form, which if feasible due to the large S2-S1 energy gap. However, owing to the efficient nonradiative decay through an energetically favorable conical intersection, the photoluminescence quantum yield of HLH is low. Protonation or deprotonation of the HLH ligand results in the significant blue-shift of the emission bands by more than 100 nm and boosts the quantum efficiency up to ca. 20% in the case of [Zn2LH2Cl2] and (H2LH)4[ZnCl4]2·3H2O. Despite both (H2LH)4[ZnCl4]2·3H2O and (H2LH)Br have the same (H2LH)+ cation in the structures, their emission properties differ significantly, whereas (H2LH)Br shows dual emission associated with two radiative decay channels: (i) S1 → S0 fluorescence and (ii) T1 → S0 phosphorescence, (H2LH)4[ZnCl4]2·3H2O exhibits only fluorescence. This difference in the emission properties can be associated with the external heavy atom effect in (H2LH)Br, which leads to faster intersystem crossing in this compound. Finally, a huge increase in the intensity of the phosphorescence of (H2LH)Br on cooling leads to pronounced luminescence thermochromism (violet emission at 300 K, sky-blue emission at 77 K).

Abstract
Inspired by the distinguished regulated photochemical and photophysical properties of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzazole derivatives, in this work, the novel bis(2'-benzothiazolyl)hydroquinone (BBTHQ) fluorophore is explored, looking at its photo-induced behaviors associated with different substituted atomic electronegativities, i.e., BBTHQ-SO, BBTHQ-SS and BBTHQ-Se compounds. From the structural changes, infrared (IR) vibrational variations and simulated core-valence bifurcation (CVB) indexes for the dual hydrogen bonds for the three BBTHQ derivatives, we see that low atomic electronegativity could be conducive to enhancing hydrogen bonding effects in the S1 state. Particularly, the O4-H5⋯N6 of BBTHQ-SO and the O1-H2⋯N3 of BBTHQ-SSe could be strengthened to be more intensive in the S1 state, respectively. Looking into the charge recombination induced by photoexcitation, we confirm a favorable ESDPT trend deriving from the charge reorganization of the dual hydrogen bonding regions. By constructing the potential energy surfaces (PESs) along with the ESDPT paths for the BBTHQ-SO, BBTHQ-SS and BBTHQ-Se compounds, we not only unveil stepwise ESDPT behaviors, but also present an atomic electronegativity-regulated ESDPT mechanism.

Abstract
γ-Glutamytranspeptidase (GGT) is an important tumor biomarker that widely appears in the tumor cells. Therefore, accurate imaging and detection of GGT activity in live cells, serum and pathological cells grasp great importance for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of cancer. Herein, 2-(2-hydroxyl-phenyl)-6-chloro-4-(3H)-quinazolinone (HPQ) is considered as the fluorophore probe for the detection of GGT activity, which is known for the typical mechanism of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). All the simulations adopted to evaluate the sensing mechanism were carried out via DFT and TDDFT calculations at CAM-B3LYP/TZVP level of theory. The emission properties of HPQ and HPQ-TD are thoroughly studied to understand the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. The results reveal that the fluorescence quenching of HPQ (enol form) is assigned to the PET process, whereas the large Stokes shift in fluorescence emission of HPQ (keto form) is related with ESIPT mechanism. The obtained results are further cross validated by frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis, geometric analysis, and potential energy curve (PEC) scanning. Our calculations provide powerful evidence for the ESIPT based sensing mechanism of HPQ (keto-enol form) for GGT activity.

Abstract
CONTEXT In recent years, fluorescent probe technology has received more and more attention. However, the photophysical and photochemical properties of probe molecules still need to be further explored. This paper presents the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes and photophysical properties of the probe molecule 4-bromo-2-((E)-((Z)-((5-bromo-1H-indol-2-yl) methylene) hydrazono) methyl) phenol (BHPL) and its four derivatives (BHPL2, BHPL3, BHPL4, and BHPL5). Infrared spectra and geometric structure analyses revealed that introducing the -NH2 group on the benzene ring with the hydroxyl group will enhance the intramolecular hydrogen bond, which benefits the ESIPT process. Combining their absorption and fluorescence spectra, it can be concluded that BHPL2 and BHPL4 are both excellent probe candidates due to their large Stokes shift. The hole and electron and root mean square displacement analyses manifest that the fluorescence quenching of BHPL4 may be due to the intramolecular charge transfer process. Potential energy curves of BHPL and its four derivatives noted that ESIPT process of the BHPL2 is the most favorable to occur. The frontier molecular orbital and NBO analyses indicated that besides introducing electron-donating groups to reduce the energy gap and enhance fluorescence emission, introducing double electron-withdrawing groups can also achieve this effect, explaining why the energy barrier of ESIPT process for BHPL2 is lower than BHPL5. This work would provide the theoretical basis for designing novel fluorescence probes with more prominent properties. METHODS The ground (S0) and excited (S1) state structures of all compounds were optimized by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TDDFT) method, with B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level, respectively. The infrared spectra and potential energy curves were simulated at the same theoretical level. The reduced density gradient scatter plots and interaction region indicator isosurfaces were drawn using Multiwfn and VMD programs. The absorption and fluorescence spectra were simulated by the TDDFT/B3PW91/6-311+G(d,p) method. All the calculations in this work are carried out in Gaussian 16 program package.

Abstract
To expound specific excited state processes of the novel excitation wavelength dependent emission BH-BA fluorophore for better subsequent applications, this wok mainly focus on exploring photo-induced hydrogen bonding geometrical changes, excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism and related regulated behavior via solvent polarity. The differences of structural parameters, infrared (IR) vibrational spectra, core-valence bifurcation (CVB) index as well as electronic densities ρ(r) between S0 and S1 states related to dual hydrogen bonds (O1-H2···N3 and O4-H5···N6) reveal S1-state hydrogen bonding strength facilitate ESIPT behaviors for BH-BA system. Of particular note, O4-H5···N6 plays a more dominant role. Photo-induced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and variations of Hirshfled and NPA charges over atoms related to hydrogen bonding moieties promote the ESIPT tendency for BH-BA. Combined potential energy surfaces (PESs), transition state (TS) and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) paths, we illustrate the excited state intramolecular single proton transfer (ESISPT) mechanism of BH-BA should occur along with O4-H5···N6 hydrogen bonding wire, which could be adjusted by surrounding solvent polarity.

Abstract
1H-Imidazole derivatives establish one of the iconic classes of ESIPT-capable compounds (ESIPT = excited state intramolecular proton transfer). This work presents the synthesis of 1-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-methyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazole (LOH,OH) as the first example of ESIPT-capable imidazole derivatives wherein the imidazole moiety simultaneously acts as a proton acceptor and a proton donor. The reaction of LOH,OH with chloroacetone leads to the selective reduction of the imidazolic OH group (whereas the phenolic OH group remains unaffected) and to the isolation of 4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-methyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazole (LH,OH), a monohydroxy congener of LOH,OH. Both LOH,OH and LH,OH demonstrate luminescence in the solid state. The number of OH···N proton transfer sites in these compounds (one for LH,OH and two for LOH,OH) strongly affects the luminescence mechanism and color of the emission: LH,OH emits in the light green region, whereas LOH,OH luminesces in the orange region. According to joint experimental and theoretical studies, the main emission pathway of both compounds is associated with T1 → S0 phosphorescence and not related to ESIPT. At the same time, LOH,OH also exhibits S1 → S0 fluorescence associated with ESIPT with one proton transferred from the hydroxyimidazole moiety to the pyridine moiety, which is not possible for LH,OH due to the absence of the hydroxy group in the imidazole moiety.

Abstract
The exploration of the intrinsic relationship between the phototautomerization and photoelectric properties is of great significance for the application of the emerging novel organic materials, such as the (bi)heterocyclic thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole derivatives (TzTz). Here, by introducing the chemical-controlling protonation, a barrierless spontaneous rotation movement of the designed TzTz derivative (2,5-diyl-amino-thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole, DA-TzTz) was ensured through the facilitation of the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) triggered twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process by the enhancement of the intramolecular hydrogen bonds, steric hindrance effect, and conjugative effect. It is further verified that the hetero S atoms could mostly effect the proton accepting ability of -N═ through comparing with the influences to the intramolecular H-bond between the protonated/nonprotonated amino groups and the -N═ atoms brought by the replacement of them with N or O atoms. As a result, the dissociation and rearrangement of the π conjugation in DA-TzTz accompanying with the variation of the optoelectronic characteristics was benefited from the establishment of the preferential charge-transfer and separation. We expect this tentative study could establish a new concept of designing an efficient charge-transfer and separation method, paving the way for the development of the TzTz derivatives and other optoelectronic organic materials.

Abstract
The exploration of organic fluorescent sensing materials and mechanisms is of great significance, especially for the deep understanding of twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT). Here, the electron-donating ability of a chemically protonated amino group and the corresponding excitation primarily ensure the occurrence of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer. Due to the hybridization of the amino group from sp3 to sp2, the steric hindrance effect and conjugative effect together boost the rotation efficiency of the TICT process and the complete elimination of the background fluorescent signal. Furthermore, a sharp turn-on fluorescent detection of trace nitrite particulate with a diameter of 0.44 μm was realized. In addition, this protonation-induced change in the amino group configuration was verified through around nine categories of compounds. We expect this modulation of the photochemical activity path of the TICT process would greatly facilitate the exploration of novel fluorescent sensing mechanisms.

Abstract
The emission of ESIPT-fluorophores is known to be sensitive to various external and internal stimuli and can be fine-tuned through substitution in the proton-donating and proton-accepting groups. The incorporation of metal ions in the molecules of ESIPT fluorophores without their deprotonation is an emerging area of research in coordination chemistry which provides chemists with a new factor affecting the ESIPT reaction and ESIPT-coupled luminescence. In this paper we present 1-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-(pyridin-2-yl)-2-(quinolin-2-yl)-1H-imidazole (HLq) as a new ESIPT-capable ligand. Due to the spatial separation of metal binding and ESIPT sites this ligand can coordinate metal ions without being deprotonated. The reactions of ZnHal2 with HLq afford ESIPT-capable [Zn(HLq)Hal2] (Hal = Cl, Br, I) complexes. In the solid state HLq and [Zn(HLq)Hal2] luminesce in the orange region (λmax = 600-650 nm). The coordination of HLq by Zn2+ ions leads to the increase in the photoluminescence quantum yield due to the chelation-enhanced fluorescence effect. The ESIPT process is barrierless in the S1 state, leading to the only possible fluorescence channel in the tautomeric form (T), S1T → S0T. The emission of [Zn(HLq)Hal2] in the solid state is blue-shifted as compared with HLq due to the stabilization of the ground state and destabilization of the excited state. In CH2Cl2 solutions, the compounds demonstrate dual emission in the UV (λmax = 358 nm) and green (λmax = 530 nm) regions. This dual emission is associated with two radiative deactivation channels in the normal (N) and tautomeric (T) forms, S1N → S0N and S1T → S0T, originating from two minima on the excited state potential energy surfaces. High energy barriers for the GSIPT process allow the trapping of molecules in the minimum of the tautomeric form, S0T, resulting in the possibility of the S0T → S1T photoexcitation and extraordinarily small Stokes shifts in the solid state. Finally, the π-system of quinolin-2-yl group facilitates the delocalization of the positive charge in the proton-accepting part of the molecule and promotes the ESIPT reaction.

Abstract
Arnebinones B, E, and D (1-3) have been found to be sensitive to light, generating complex and diverse proton transfer products when triggered by light. A unique two-step irreversible intramolecular proton transfer of 1 produced five scalemic mixtures, of which four possessed intriguing dual planar chirality. The unprecedented orientation epimerization equilibrium of the intra-annular double bond was first observed and researched in the homologous meroterpenoids by HPLC monitoring and DFT calculations. A "p-benzoquinone-CH2/CH-π" moiety in the structure was the common key feature for the occurrence of this type of photoenolization reaction. The product transformation processes and universality of this photoinduced irreversible proton transfer reaction were analyzed together with the cytotoxic activities of arnebinones B, D, and E, and their photoreaction products.

Abstract
In this work, we computationally design a series of fluorescent purine analogues based on the 2-amino-8-(1'-β-D-2'-deoxyribofuranosyl)-imidazo[1,2-a]-1,3,5-triazin-4(8H)-one (P) to monitor the DNA replication process with merely a minimal perturbation to the natural structure of nucleic acid. The P-modified fluorescent probes present red-shifted absorption spectra and enhanced photoluminescence due to the additional π-conjugation resulting from the fluorophore modification and the ring-expansion. Efficient fluorescence quenching of P-analogues occurs upon pairing with the complementary 6-amino-5-nitro-3-(1'-β-D-2'-deoxyribofuranosyl)-2(1H)-pyridone (Z) due to the nonradiative relaxation from the low-lying dark excited state to the ground state of Z moiety. Especially, the P3 and the P7, which have high fluorescence intensity in both gas and liquid phases, are proposed as the sensors for studying conformational switching in the presence and absence of a complementary sequence. Also examined are the influences of hydration and the linking to deoxyribose on absorption and emission processes. Besides, the potential phosphorescence emission of these modified base pairs is taken into account by constructing the relaxed potential energy curves of S0, T1 and S1 states.

Abstract
In this work, we use density functional theory and time dependent density functional theory to explore the ESIPT and TICT process of 6-(1H-Benzoimidazol-2-yl)-2,3-dimethoxy-phenol (BIDOP) in cyclohexane (CHX) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent, respectively. It reveals that ESIPT process of BIDOP can occur in both CHX and THF solvent at the first excited state with similar reaction barrier. Remarkably, compared to barrierless from keto (K*) to TICT state of BIDOP in THF solvent, the reaction barrier between K* and TICT state is up to 20.28 kcal/mol for in CHX that TICT process is inhibited in CHX solvent. The absence of nonradiative decay TICT state of BIDOP in CHX solvent induces higher fluorescence in CHX compared to in THF solvent. These findings indicate that CHX solvent can effectively enhance fluorescence of BIDOP. Our study highlights a convenient approach for enhancing fluorescence and is significant for photophysics and photobiology field.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) are used to study the solvatochromic effect and the excited-state intramolecular double proton transfer (ESIDPT) of 1,3-Bis(2-pyridylimino)-4,7-dihydroxyisoindole (BPI-OH) in different kinds of solvents. The hydrogen bonding parameters and IR spectra reveal that in the excited state, the strength of excited hydrogen bond increase with the decrease of solvent polarity. Furthermore, the reduction density gradient (RDG) analysis confirms the corresponding conclusion. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) are analyzed, illuminating that the smaller the polarity of solvent, the smaller the energy gap between the HOMO and LUMO. The structures of BPI-OH (N) (normal), BPI-OH (T1) (single), and BPI-OH (T2) (double) were optimized. Previous reports found the double protons in BPI-OH molecule are transferred step-by-step process BPI-OH(N)→BPI-OH(T1)→BPI-OH(T2) in the ground state (S0) and the first excited singlet state (S1). Here, the potential energy curves of O1-H2 and O4-H5 in the S0 and S1 states were scanned in four kinds of solvents, respectively. It was found that in S1 state, BPI-OH(N)→BPI-OH(T1) was more prone to proton transfer than BPI-OH(T1)→BPI-OH(T2). In addition, by comparing the reaction energy barriers of the four kinds of solvents, it can be found that ESIPT is difficult to occur with the increase of solvent polarity. Meanwhile, it was also studied that MeOH as an explicit solvent was more likely to promote the ESIPT process than other implicit solvents.

Abstract
A novel and efficient chemosensor 1 for detecting Cu2+ has recently been developed. However, the photophysical properties of chemosensor 1 and its response mechanism to Cu2+ are still unclear. Herein, the density functional theory and the time-dependent density functional theory approaches are implemented to investigate the excited state behavior of chemosensor 1 and its sensing mechanism for Cu2+ is revealed. Through constructing the potential energy curve with the dihedral angle of hydroxide radical as a variable, the irreversibility of the adjustment of the hydrogen proton direction is determined. This feature provides a favorable geometric configuration condition for the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bond. Moreover, the reduced density gradient analysis and topological analysis are performed to visualize the hydrogen bond strength, it is found that the hydrogen bond is enhanced in first singlet excited state (S1) compared with that in ground state (S0). The chemosensor 1 has only a low potential barrier in the S1 state, indicating that it could undergo an ultra-fast excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. Furthermore, the reaction sites of chemosensor 1 and Cu2+ is theoretically predicted by the electrostatic potential analysis and the coordination mode of 1 + Cu2+-H+ is confirmed. Thus, we verify that the deprotonation inhibits the ESIPT behavior and leads to fluorescence quenching to achieve the recognition of chemosensor 1 to Cu2+. In addition, the binding energy of Cu2+ with chemosensor 1 is greater than that of Mg2+ and Zn2+, the high selectivity of chemosensor 1 to Cu2+ is illustrated. Our investigation clarifies the sensing mechanism of chemosensor 1 to Cu2+ based on inhibiting ultra-fast ESIPT process, which provides a theoretical basis for the development of new metal ion sensors.

Abstract
In this work, an ESIPT-based fluorescence probe, 5′-amino-2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazole (P1), was synthesized and explored for the ratiometric detection of phosgene. Compared to 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazole (HBI), P1 exhibits high sensitivity (LoD = 5.3 nM) and selectivity toward phosgene with the introduction of the amine group. Furthermore, simple P1 loaded test papers are manufactured and display selective fluorescent detection of phosgene in the gas phase. An easily prepared phosgene probe, 5′-amino-2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazole (P1), is designed and studied. Based on ESIPT mechanism, P1 exhibits ratiometric, sensitive and selective detection of phosgene both in solution and gas phase.![]()

Abstract
Simple and effective detection of thiophenols has attracted great attention. A fluorescent probe 1 with high selectivity and sensitivity is designed and synthesized based on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in experiment. However, we conclude that the ESIPT process fails to happen actually based on the calculation results. In the present work, the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods are employed to investigate the real sensing mechanism. The calculated absorption and emission spectra agree well with the experimental results. By comparing the energy of enol and keto configurations and the constructed potential energy surfaces (PESs) in the ground (S0) and excited (S1) states of 3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-10-butyl-10H-phenothiazin-2-ol (dye 2), the ESIPT process is confirmed impossible because of the relatively high keto form energy and potential energy barrier. Besides, the transition state of dye 2 is optimized to offer the accurate potential energy barrier. The results of calculated frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and spectra indicate that it is the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process that results in the fluorescence quenching of probe 1. After adding thiophenols, the thiolysis of 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether bond is triggered and dye 2, which emits strong fluorescence because of the absence of PET process, is obtained. Consequently, our study has demonstrated that probe 1 can act as a fluorescent probe to detect thiophenols through the off-on fluorescence variation based on the PET mechanism but not the ESIPT process.

Abstract
The photophysical and photochemical properties of the novel hydrazine sensor TAPHP and the TAPDP generated by the cyclization reaction of TAPHP with hydrazine are investigated using the density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. The results show that both the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer and intramolecular charge transfer can occur for TAPHP and TAPDP. Analysis of bond parameters and infrared vibrational spectra indicate that hydrogen bonds are enhanced in the first excited state, which is beneficial to excited-state intramolecular proton transfer. The strength of hydrogen bonds is also visualized by using the independent gradient model and topological analysis. The core-valence bifurcation index and bond critical point parameters are further employed to measure hydrogen bonds. The reaction path of proton transfer is obtained through the potential energy curves. The excitation of TAPHP and TAPDP is attributed to the charge transfer excitation, which is determined by the characteristics of the hole-electron distribution. The reaction site and product configuration are verified by atomic charge and 1H-NMR spectra. The negative free energy difference indicates that the reaction between TAPHP and hydrazine can proceed spontaneously. In addition, the absorption and fluorescence spectra agree well with the experimental results, confirming that TAPHP is an excellent sensor of hydrazine.

Abstract
Hypochlorite plays a critical role in various physiological processes and is involved in many diseases. Thus, real-time, rapid, and accurate monitoring of hypochlorite has important medical and physiological significance. Herein, a novel coumarin-pyridine derivative (CPD) probe was designed and synthesized, which exhibited fantastic advantages, such as a rapid response (within 10 s), naked eye recognition, large Stokes shift (185 nm), dual-channel detection, and high selectivity and sensitivity toward OCl- (detection limit 0.012 μM, S/N = 3). Furthermore, the current CPD probe was successfully used to image OCl- in the mitochondria of both A549 cells and zebrafish, which further demonstrated its suitability for practical applications in biological systems.

Abstract
2-(4-(Dimethylamino)phenyl)-3-hydroxy-6,7-dimethoxy-4Hchromen-4-one (HOF) was synthesized in experiment (Wang et al., Sensor. Actuat. B-Chem. 277 (2018) 484), and its photophysical and photochemical properties was reported. However the corresponding full theoretical interpretation of mechanisms is inadequate. In the present research, the intermolecular hydrogen bond structure of HOF-methanol complex (HOF-2M) was found, and mechanism of alcohols monitoring of HOF was deeply studied using the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The enhancing mechanism of the excited state hydrogen bond is verified by analyzing the hydrogen bond parameters, infrared spectra and frontier molecular orbitals. Importantly, the reduced density gradient visual analysis and topological quantificational analysis confirm that the intramolecular hydrogen bond of HOF is broken by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds of HOF-2M using the Atoms-In-Molecule theory. The obtained absorption and emission spectra are found to agree well with the experimental results and the complete quenched keto-emission in methanol and ethanol solvents provide a suitable sensing mechanism for detecting alcohols. The reaction path of the excited state intramolecular proton transfer for HOF is explained in detail through the constructed potential energy curves.
