Oxygen deficient Pr6O11 nanorod supported palladium nanoparticles: highly active nanocatalysts for styrene and 4-nitrophenol hydrogenation reactions

Facile Construction Engineering of Pr6O11@C with Efficient Photocatalytic Activity

In this study, facile construction engineering of Pr6O11@C with efficient photocatalytic activity was established. Taking advantage of the flocculation of Pr3+ in the base medium, acid red 14 (AR14) was flocculated together with Pr(OH)3 precipitate, in which Pr(OH)3 and AR14 mixed highly uniformly. Calcinated at high temperature in N2, a novel Pr6O11@C was successfully synthesized. The resulting materials were characterized by XRD, SEM, FT-IR, Raman, and XPS techniques. The results show that the cubic Pr6O11@C with Fm3m space group, similar to that of Pr6O11, was obtained. From the results of the photodegradation of AR14, it is found that the photocatalytic efficiency of Pr6O11@C is higher than that of pure Pr6O11 due to the formation of abundant carbon bonds and oxygen vacancies. Compared with pure Pr6O11 and other carbon-based composites, the acid resistance of Pr6O11@C is greatly improved due to the highly uniform dispersion of Pr6O11 and C, which lays a solid foundation for the practical application of Pr6O11@C. Moreover, the role of NH3·H2O and NaOH used as precipitants for the photocatalytic efficiency of Pr6O11 was investigated in detail.

Exploring the Gamma-Ray Enhanced NIR-Luminescence and Cytotoxic Potential of Lanthanide-Naphthalene Dicarboxylate based Metal-Organic Frameworks

In this investigation, we explore the integration of lanthanides into Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) to enable Near-Infrared (NIR) emission. Specifically, we focus on Lanthanide-Naphthalene Dicarboxylate based MOFs (Ln-MOFs), incorporating elements such as Praseodymium (Pr), Samarium (Sm), Dysprosium (Dy), and Erbium (Er). The synthesis of Ln-MOFs is achieved via the hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology, thermal stability, and luminescence properties of synthesized Ln-MOFs have been evaluated through different characterization techniques. Upon photoexcitation at 350 nm, Ln-MOFs show the emission in the Visible and NIR region. Further, the luminescence intensity of Ln-MOFs enhanced by 2-3 folds in the visible region and 6-8 folds in NIR region after exposing to Gamma irradiation at 150 kGy. Cytotoxic effect on the viability of MDA-MB 231 and MDA-MB 468 Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells was evaluated by MTT assay. The results revealed that among all synthesized MOFs, Pr-MOF exhibited an aggressive cytotoxic effect. Additionally, analysis of phase-contrast microscopy data indicates that Pr-MOF induces alterations in the morphology of both MDA-MB 231 and MDA-MB 468 TNBC cells when compared to untreated controls. The findings in this study reveal the utilization of Ln-MOFs for studying cytotoxicity and highlight their ability to enhance near-infrared (NIR) emission when exposed to gamma radiation.

Novel, Biosynthesis of Palladium Nanoparticles using Strychnos Potatorum Polysaccharide as a Green sustainable approach; and their effective Catalytic Hydrogenation of 4-Nitrophenol

In the current study, we successfully used strychnos potatorum polysaccharide through autoclaving to synthesize palladium nanoparticles in a green, sustainable process. These polysaccharide act as a stabilizing, capping, and reducing agent. It also used various analytical characterizations, including UV-Visible spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), EDAX, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), TEM and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) are used to analyze biosynthesized pallidum nanoparticles (PdNPs). The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at 276 nm and UV-visible spectroscopy revealed the presence of the generated PdNPs. The XRD data show that PdNPs have crystalline behavior and a pristine face-centered cubic (FCC) structure. The PdNPs were successfully developed by catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The catalytic activity and reusability of the environmentally friendly PdNPs catalyst were demonstrated by achieving a remarkable transformation of 95 % nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol after five cycles. The reaction rate constant (k) for the degradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) using SP-PdNPs as a catalyst is 0.1201 min-1 and R2 0.9867, with a normalized rate constant of (Knor = K/m) of 7.206 s-1 mM-1. These findings provide fundamental knowledge of the catalytic process governing the hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol, which will help designers of effective catalysts. An innovative and affordable technique for creating PdNPs that are environmentally acceptable and can be utilized as effective catalysts in environmental applications is the use of strychnos potatorum gum polysaccharide. The green-synthesized PdNPs can be used for pollutant remediation, including pharmaceutical, domestic, heavy metal, industrial, and pesticide pollutants.

Synergistic effects of nitrogen-doped carbon and praseodymium oxide in electrochemical water splitting

Hybrid materials featuring perovskite-type metal oxide in conjunction with heteroatom-doped graphene hold immense promise as alternatives to costly noble metal catalysts for electrochemical water splitting, facilitating the generation of environmentally friendly hydrogen. In this study, perovskite-type oxide containing praseodymium, barium, strontium, cobalt, and iron atoms dispersed in a carbon matrix as a catalyst is synthesized via annealing of the carbon material with substrates for the preparation of perovskite oxide. The mass ratio of reagents regulates the porous structure and elemental composition. The result of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), suggests that the hybrid catalysts exhibit intermediate HER kinetics compared to the commercial Pt/C and the catalyst without carbon. The Tafel slope for HER is lower for materials containing carbon, because of the improved reaction kinetics, facilitated proton transfer, and enhanced electrochemical surface area. Therefore, the study provides an effective strategy for the preparation of catalyst and their use as the active catalyst of water splitting.

Ultrathin Atomic Layer Deposited Al2O3 Overcoat Stabilizes Al2O3-Pt/Ni-Foam Hydrogenation Catalysts

Galvanic exchange seeds the growth of Pt nanostructures on the Ni foam monolith. Subsequent atomic layer deposition of ultrathin Al2O3 followed by annealing under air affords supported Pt catalysts with ultralow loading (0.020 ppm). In addition to the expected enhancement of the stability of the Pt particles on the surface, the ∼2 nm Al2O3 overcoat appears to also play a crucial role in the overall structural integrity of the NiOx nanoplates that grow on the Ni foam surface as a result of the preparative route. The resulting material is physically robust toward repeated handling and showcases retention of catalytic activity over 10 standard catalyst recycling trials, standing in marked contrast to the uncoated samples. Catalyst activity was tested via the hydrogenation of various functionalized styrenes at low temperatures and low hydrogen pressure in ethanol as a solvent, with a TOF as high as 9.5 × 106 h-1 for unfunctionalized styrene. Notably, the catalysts show excellent tolerance toward F, Cl, and Br substituents and no hydrogenation of the aromatic ring.

Synthesis, structure, morphology, magnetism, and magnetocaloric-effect studies of (La1−xPrx)0.7Sr0.3MnO3 nanocrystalline perovskites

Single-Phase (La1–xPrx)0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0) perovskites were synthesized by the sol–gel method followed by sintering at 700 °C for 5 h. Samples with x = 0.0–0.4 are found to crystallize into rhombohedral structure (R-3c space group) while the ones with x = 0.6–1.0 crystallize into orthorhombic structure (Pbnm space group). The average particle size of the samples was in the range of 21–44 nm. All samples exhibit a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic second-order magnetic phase transition at Curie temperature, which is found to decrease linearly with increasing the Pr concentration. The magnetic coercivity was found to be small (~ 10 Oe) for all the samples, at T < TC. The experimental effective paramagnetic moment (µeff) is found to increase with increasing x from 3.99 µB (x = 0.0) to 5.05 µB (x = 1.0). The magnitude of the maximum magnetic entropy change (−ΔSM)max. and the relative cooling power (RCP) for the samples having orthorhombic structure increases as x increases reaching a maximum value of 4.67 J/kg.K and 574 J/kg at ΔµoH = 9 T for x = 1.0. While the ones with the rhombohedral structure have the maximum values of (−ΔSM)max. and RCP of 4.63 J/kg.K and 472 J/kg at ΔµoH = 9 T are for x = 0.2. The large values of (−ΔSM)max. and RCP (at room temperature (RT)) and the wider temperature range of −ΔSM for the sample with x = 0.6 suggests that this compound may be considered as magnetic refrigerant material at RT, and the other compounds can be candidates in the vicinity of RT.

Potential of rare-earth compounds as anticorrosion pigment for protection of aerospace AA2198-T851 alloy

In this study, the anticorrosion potential of carboxylic compounds; Lanthanum 4-hydroxycinnamate La(4OHCin)₃, Cerium 4-hydroxycinnamate Ce(4OHCin)₃ and Praseodymium 4-hydroxycinnamate Pr(4OHCin)₃ for the protection of Al-Cu-Li alloy was investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution using electrochemical tests (EIS and PDP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The findings achieved show a very good correlation between electrochemical responses and surface morphologies of the exposed alloy, indicating a modification of the surface by precipitation of the inhibitor species, leading to effective protection against corrosion. At optimum concentration 200 ppm, the trend of inhibition efficiency η (%) increases in the order Ce(4OHCin)₃ 93.35% > Pr(4OHCin)₃ 85.34% > La(4OHCin)₃ 82.25%. XPS complemented the findings by detecting and providing information about the oxidation states of the protective species.

Enhancing catalytic activity through the construction of praseodymium tungstate decorated on hierarchical three-dimensional porous biocarbon for determination of furazolidone in aquatic samples

Boosting catalytic performance as a vital role for an electrochemical sensor for monitoring various hazardous nitro drugs. Herein, an inexpensive, facile, and eco-friendly construction of praseodymium tungstate decorated on three dimensional porous biocarbon (PrW/3D-PBC) for electrochemical determination of carcinogenic residue furazolidone (FZ). The nanostructured PrW nanoparticles were prepared by solvent evaporation from peroxo-tungstic acid and 3D-PBC was prepared from biomass precursor under the carbonization method. Furthermore, the composite of PrW decorated on 3D-PBC was prepared by an ultrasonic-assisted wet chemical approach. Besides, the composite characterization of crystalline, functional group, degree of carbonization, chemical states, and morphology were utilized by theXRD, FTIR, RAMAN, XPS, and FESEM analysis. These 3D porous carbon decorated PrW nanoparticles facilitate the electrochemical anchoring sites, surface area, and ease of diffusion layers towards the detection of hazardous nitro pollutant FZ by using CV analysis. The low LOD and high sensitivity were achieved by FZ determination through using LSV and DPV techniques. The practical capability of the PrW/3D-PBC/GCE sensor was determined by using aquatic samples to achieve a good recovery result. These results instigate that the PrW/3D-PBC will be an efficient electrocatalytic material for FZ sensor in environmental aquatic samples.

Ni-Pd-Incorporated Fe3O4 Yolk-Shelled Nanospheres as Efficient Magnetically Recyclable Catalysts for Reduction of N-Containing Unsaturated Compounds

The use of metal-based heterogeneous catalysts for the degradation of N-containing organic dyes has attracted much attention due to their excellent treatment efficiency and capability. Here, we report the synthesis of heterometals (Ni and Pd)-incorporated Fe3O4 (Ni-Pd/Fe3O4) yolk-shelled nanospheres for the catalytic reduction of N-containing organic dyes using a facile combination of solvothermal treatment and high-temperature annealing steps. Benefiting from the magnetic properties and the yolk-shelled structure of the Fe3O4 support, as well as the uniformly dispersed active heterometals incorporated in the shell and yolk of spherical Fe3O4 nanoparticles, the as-prepared Ni-Pd/Fe3O4 composite shows excellent recyclability and enhanced catalytic activity for three N-containing organic dyes (e.g., 4-nitrophenol, Congo red, and methyl orange) compared with its mono metal counterparts (e.g., Ni/Fe3O4 and Pd/Fe3O4). In the 4-nitrophenol reduction reaction, the catalytic activity of Ni-Pd/Fe3O4 was superior to many Fe3O4-supported nanocatalysts reported within the last five years. This work provides an effective strategy to boost the activity of iron oxide-based catalytic materials via dual or even multiple heterometallic incorporation strategy and sheds new light on environmental catalysis.

Enhancement of the catalytic activity of Suzuki coupling reactions by reduction of modified carriers and promotion of Pd/H2-PrxOy surface electron transfer

Pd/H2-PrxOy nanotubes were prepared by electrostatic spinning, high-temperature calcination and modified deposition–precipitation method, and exhibited high catalytic performance for Suzuki coupling reaction under mild conditions.

Enhancing the Hydrogen-Sensing Performance of p-Type PdO by Modulating the Conduction Model

The implementation of the p-type metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) in modern sensing systems requires a strategy to effectively enhance its inherent low response. However, for p-type MOS sensors, conventional methods such as catalyst nanoparticle (NP) decoration and grain size regulation do not work as effectively as they do for n-type MOS sensors, which is basically due to the fact that the p-type MOS adopts an unfavorable parallel conduction model. Herein, taking Au@PdO as an example, we demonstrate that the conduction model of the p-type MOS can be manipulated into the series conduction model by inserting a high-conductive metallic core into less-conductive p-type MOS NPs. This unique series conduction model makes the sensor response of Au@PdO nanoparticle arrays (NAs) very sensitive to the catalyst NP decoration as well as the change of structural parameters. For example, Au@PdO NAs demonstrate an ∼9000 times increase in sensor response when decorated with Pd NPs, whereas there is only ∼100 times increase for PdO NAs. This greatly improved response value outperforms all previously reported PdO-based (and most other p-type semiconductor-based) H2 sensors, which helps the obtained sensor to achieve an ultralow detection limit of ∼0.1 ppm at room temperature. Additionally, Au@PdO NAs inherit the high surface reactivity and gas adsorption property of p-type PdO. As a result, the as-prepared sensor exhibits high humidity-resistive property and excellent selectivity. This work provides a new strategy to significantly enhance the sensing performance of p-type gas sensors by manipulating their conduction model.

Preparation of a PdRuNi/C tri-metallic nanocatalyst and its excellent catalytic performance for ethylbenzene hydrogenation reaction

PdRuNi/C with the nanostructure of PdRu-on-Ni/Ni(OH)₂ NPs exhibited excellent catalytic performance for ethylbenzene hydrogenation due to the nano-synergistic effect.
