Abstract
One of the main challenges faced in food safety is the accumulation of toxic heavy metals from environmental sources, which can sequentially endanger human health when they are consumed. It is invaluable to establish a practical assay for the determination of heavy metals for food safety. Among the current detection methods, technology based on fluorescent probes, with the advantages of sensitivity, convenience, accuracy, cost, and reliability, has recently shown pluralistic applications in the food industry, which is significant to ensure food safety. Hence, this review systematically presents the recent progress on novel fluorescent probes in determining heavy metals for food safety over the past five years, according to fluorophores and newly emerging sensing cores, which could contribute to broadening the prospects of fluorescent materials and establishing more practical assays for heavy metal determinations.

Abstract
A quinoline-naphthalene duo-based Schiff base probe (R) was synthesized and characterized by the usual spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray crystallographic techniques. Probe R detects Al3+ and HSO3- ions via the fluorescent turn-on approach by dual pathways i.e., i) when probe R interacts with Al3+, the restriction of CN single bond rotation, blocking of both photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and CN isomerization were observed, and ii) when the sensor R interacts with HSO3-, imine (CH = N) bond was cleaved via hydrolysis and produced the respective aldehyde and amine behaving as a chemodosimeter. The binding stoichiometric ratio of R + Al3+ (1:1) was confirmed by Job's plot, emission titration profile, NMR, and mass spectrometric analyses. This probe R is highly selective to both Al3+ -ions and HSO3- -ions, without any interference of other potentially competing cations and anions. Limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of R with Al3+ and HSO3- were downed to nanomolar concentrations, which is much lower than the recommended level of drinking water/food fixed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, probe R was utilized in the detection of Al3+ and HSO3- ions in highly contaminated real samples, bioimaging in E. coli cells, multiple-targeting molecular logic gate, and in bovine serum albumin (BSA) binding.

Abstract
A novel triazole-bridged coumarin-benzimidazole-conjugated fluorescence sensor (4) has been developed for selective detection of Cd2+ over other competitive metal ions. The sensor exhibited quick "turn-on" responses upon interaction with a very low level of Cd2+ (14 nM). The photophysical changes in the complexation of Cd2+ with sensor 4 have been explained through the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer mechanism. The involvement of benzimidazole and triazole moieties in Cd2+ binding was confirmed by different spectroscopic techniques such as UV-vis, Fourier transform infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and ESI mass. The diameter of the circular shape of the sensor decreased upon complexation with Cd2+, which was confirmed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the quantum chemical (density functional theory) calculation supported the mechanism of interactions and the mode of binding of 4 toward Cd2+. The sensor was more effective for finding Cd2+ in two living cells, C6 (rat glial cell) and Hep G2 (human liver cell).

Abstract
Bisulfite (HSO3-) has been widely used in food and industry, which has brought convenience to human life, but also seriously endangered human health. In this work, the probe PBI was designed and synthesized to detect bisulfite (HSO3-) through nucleophilic addition reaction. The probe PBI showed a selective reaction to HSO3- and can quantitatively detect HSO3-. At the same time, the color of the probe PBI changed significantly, which provided a simple method for the naked eye to identify HSO3-. Finally, it was successfully applied to the fluorescence imaging of HSO3- in living cells.

Abstract
The field of chemosensing has been experiencing an exponential expansion in recent times, due to increased demands for simpler and user-friendly analytical techniques, in order to combat and confront the challenges of industrial pollutions in the twenty-first century. Metal complex-based chemosensors have received little attention while exhibiting excellent sensing properties, comparing to their organic counterparts. Thus, a thiosemicarbazone-based (H) and its cadmium complex (P) were synthesized, characterized and their photophysical and chemosensing properties were investigated in DMF solvent. The addition of molar equivalents of selected cations (of nitrates or chloride salts) to H and P, produced visually detectable colour changes as well as remarkable spectral shifts. Explicitly, the two probes (H and P) were able to collectively discriminate heavy metal cations such as Cd2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, and Ag+, both in DMF, among all other heavy metal cations tested. None of the anions could be detected by H or P, even when the tetrabutylammonium salts (TBAs) were used, the action presumably ascribed to the solvent effect. Thus, H and P can be used to selectively and sensitively detect the presence of heavy metal cations, via naked-eye detectable colour changes in an aqueous soluble solvent such as DMF.

Abstract
Among various known hydroxyquinolines, 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) is the most prevalent moiety due to excellent property for the formation of the complex with different metal ions and anions, and utilized in a wide variety of applications in pharmacological and medicinal fields. 8-Hydroxyquinoline moiety and its analogues acts as fluorophoric ligands on complex formation with alkali and alkaline as well as transition metal ions and anions, thus, considered as an ideal building block in metallo-supramolecular chemistry for recognition, separation, and quantitative investigation of cations. 8-Hydroxyquinoline moiety is also used in various applications for the advancement of novel fluorescent chemosensors in a wide variety of areas viz., material chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, molecular imaging, analytical chemistry, molecular recognition, medical and biological science communities. The present review emphasises on the progress of sensing properties of 8-HQ centred small-molecule fluorescent chemosensors towards several metal ions viz., Fe3+ , Al3+ , Ag+ , Hg2+ , Cu2+ , Pd2+ , Zn2+ , Cr3+ , Cd2+ , Mn2+ , Ca2+ , and K+ and anions such as F- , CN- and PPi, from 2008 to 2020, because of their sensitivity and selectivity in terms of diverse colour changes for different species. This critical and comprehensive review might facilitate the improvement of more prevailing chemosensors for future exciting and broad applications.

Abstract
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) had been recognized as an environmental pollutant produced from industrial processes. SO2 is water soluble and forms hydrated SO2 (SO2·H2O), bisulfite ion (HSO3-), and sulfite ion (SO32-) upon dissolution in water. SO2 could be also produced endogenously from sulfur-containing amino acids l-cysteine in mammals. Endogenous SO2 can maintain the balance of biological sulfur and redox equilibrium in vivo, regulate blood insulin levels and reduce blood pressure. Excess intake of exogenous SO2 can result in respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases and neurological disorders. As a result, fluorescent probes to detect HSO3-/SO32- have attracted great attention in recent years. Herein, a general overview was provided with the aim to highlight the typical examples of the HSO3-/SO32- fluorescent probes reported since 2010, especially those in the past five years. We have classified HSO3-/SO32- fluorescent probes through different chemical reaction mechanisms and wish this review will give some help to the researchers in this field.

Abstract
Three new diarylethenes were synthesized from 1,2-bis(5-methyl-2-(4-substituted-phenyl)thiazol-4-yl)ethyne and benzyl azide through Ru(I)-catalyzed Huisgen cyclization reactions. The 4,5-bisthiazolyl-1,2,3-triazoles thus prepared, which belong to the terarylene family, showed thermally reversible photochromism. The absorption maximum wavelengths of the closed forms are longer than other terarylenes reported so far. The thermal back reactions are much faster when the substituents on the terminal phenyl groups are electron-withdrawing cyano groups than when they are electron-donating methoxy groups.
