Recent trends in incorporation of CO2 into organosulfur compounds via C-S bond cleavage

Desulfurative functionalization of organosulfur compounds to form various carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds has become established as a powerful tool in organic chemistry. In this context, desulfurative carboxylation of this class of compounds using carbon dioxide (CO2) as a sustainable and renewable source of carboxyl has recently been developed as an efficient option for the synthesis of carboxylic acid derivatives. The aim of this Focus Review is to summarize the major progress in this appealing research field with particular emphasis on the mechanistic features of the reactions. Literature has been surveyed until the end of February 2024, according to the data collected using SciFinder and Google Scholar engines.

Recent progress in reductive carboxylation of C-O bonds with CO2

Transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added organic compounds has attracted increasing interest of scientific community in the last few decades, not only because CO2 is the primary greenhouse gas that drives global climate change and ocean acidification, but also because it has been regarded as a plentiful, nontoxic, nonflammable and renewable one-carbon (C1) feedstock. Among the various CO2-conversion processes, carboxylation reactions represent one of the most beautiful and attractive research topics in the field, since it offers the possibility for the construction of synthetically and biologically important carboxylic acids from various easily accessible (pseudo)halides, organosilicon, and organoboron compounds. The purpose of this review is to summarize the available literature on deoxygenative carboxylation of alcohols and their derivatives utilizing CO2 as a carboxylative reagent. Depending on the C-O compounds employed, the paper is divided into five major sections. The direct dehydroxylative carboxylation of free alcohols is discussed first. This is followed by reductive carboxylation of carboxylates, triflates, and tosylates. In the final section, the only reported example on catalytic carboxylation of fluorosulfates will be covered. Notably, special attention has been paid on the mechanistic aspects of the reactions that may provide new insights into catalyst improvement and development, which currently mainly relies on the use of transition metal catalysts.

Aryl fluorosulfates: powerful and versatile partners in cross-coupling reactions

Aryl fluorosulfates are versatile building blocks in organic synthesis and have gained increasing attention in SuFEx (Sulfur Fluoride Exchange) click chemistry. They are easily and conveniently prepared from phenols using sulfuryl fluoride SO₂F₂ as a low-cost sulfonyl fluoride provider. Recently, they served as less toxic and more atom economical alternatives to triflates in an impressive number of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom cross-coupling reactions. In this review, we summarize the current advances and developments in applying aryl fluorosulfates as electrophilic partners in cross-coupling reactions.

A general electron donor-acceptor complex for photoactivation of arenes via thianthrenation

General photoactivation of electron donor–acceptor (EDA) complexes between arylsulfonium salts and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane with visible light or natural sunlight was discovered. This practical and efficient mode enables the production of aryl radicals under mild conditions, providing an unrealized opportunity for two-step para-selective C–H functionalization of complex arenes. The novel mode for generating aryl radicals via an EDA complex was well supported by UV-vis absorbance measurements, nuclear magnetic resonance titration experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The method was applied to the regio- and stereo-selective arylation of various N-heterocycles under mild conditions, yielding an assembly of challengingly linked heteroaryl–(hetero)aryl products. Remarkably, the meaningful couplings of bioactive molecules with structurally complex drugs or agricultural pharmaceuticals were achieved to display favorable in vitro antitumor activities, which will be of great value in academia or industry.

Photochemical and electrochemical C-N borylation of arylhydrazines

The C-N borylation of arylhydrazine hydrochlorides with bis(pinacolato)diboron was achieved under photochemical and electrochemical conditions, respectively. This novel and scalable transformation provides two efficient and mild transition-metal-free synthetic routes towards aryl boronate esters from easily available arylhydrazines.

Palladium-Catalysed Intermolecular Direct C–H Bond Arylation of Heteroarenes with Reagents Alternative to Aryl Halides: Current State of the Art

Abstract:

Abstract: This unprecedented review with 322 references provides a critical up-to-date picture of the Pd-catalysed intermolecular direct C–H bond arylation of heteroarenes with arylating reagents alternative to aryl halides that include aryl sulfonates (aryl triflates, tosylates, mesylates, and imidazole-1-sulfonates), diaryliodonium salts, [(diacetoxy)iodo]arenes, arenediazonium salts, 1-aryltriazenes, arylhydrazines and N’-arylhydrazides, arenesulfonyl chlorides, sodium arenesulfinates, arenesulfinic acids, and arenesulfonohydrazides. Particular attention has been paid to summarise the preparation of the various arylating reagents and to highlight the practicality, versatility, and limitations of the various developed arylation protocols, also comparing their results with those achieved in analogous Pd-catalysed arylation reactions involving the use of aryl halides as electrophiles. Mechanistic proposals have also been briefly summarised and discussed. However, data concerning Pd-catalysed direct C–H bond arylations involving the C–H bonds of aryl substituents of the examined heteroarene derivatives have not been taken into account.

Black Phosphorus, an Emerging Versatile Nanoplatform for Cancer Immunotherapy

Black phosphorus (BP) is one of the emerging versatile nanomaterials with outstanding biocompatibility and biodegradability, exhibiting great potential as a promising inorganic nanomaterial in the biomedical field. BP nanomaterials possess excellent ability for valid bio-conjugation and molecular loading in anticancer therapy. Generally, BP nanomaterials can be classified into BP nanosheets (BPNSs) and BP quantum dots (BPQDs), both of which can be synthesized through various preparation routes. In addition, BP nanomaterials can be applied as photothermal agents (PTA) for the photothermal therapy (PTT) due to their high photothermal conversion efficiency and larger extinction coefficients. The generated local hyperpyrexia leads to thermal elimination of tumor. Besides, BP nanomaterials are capable of producing singlet oxygen, which enable its application as a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Moreover, BP nanomaterials can be oxidized and degraded to nontoxic phosphonates and phosphate under physiological conditions, improving their safety as a nano drug carrier in cancer therapy. Recently, it has been reported that BP-based PTT is capable of activating immune responses and alleviating the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment by detection of T lymphocytes and various immunocytokines, indicating that BP-based nanocomposites not only serve as effective PTAs to ablate large solid tumors but also function as an immunomodulation agent to eliminate discrete tumorlets. Therefore, BP-mediated immunotherapy would provide more possibilities for synergistic cancer treatment.

Electrochemical Palladium-Catalyzed Oxidative Sonogashira Carbonylation of Arylhydrazines and Alkynes to Ynones

Oxidative carbonylation using carbon monoxide has evolved as an attractive tool to valuable carbonyl-containing compounds, while mixing CO with a stoichiometric amount of a chemical oxidant especially oxygen is hazardous and limits its application in scale-up synthesis. By employing anodic oxidation, we developed an electrochemical palladium-catalyzed oxidative carbonylation of arylhydrazines with alkynes, which is regarded as an alternative supplement of the carbonylative Sonogashira reaction. Combining an undivided cell with constant current mode, oxygen-free conditions avoids the explosion hazard of CO. A diversity of ynones are efficiently obtained using accessible arylhydrazines and alkynes under copper-free conditions. A possible mechanism of the electrochemical Pd(0)/Pd(II) cycle is rationalized based upon cyclic voltammetry, kinetic studies, and intermediates experiments.

Recent Advances in the Pd-Catalyzed Coupling of Arylhydrazines and Ammonium Salts via C-N Bond Cleavage

Both arylhydrazines and quaternary ammonium salts are readily accessible or commercially available chemicals that show versatile reactivity in Pd-catalyzed coupling reactions via C-N bond cleavage. A tremendous array of coupling reactions involving reaction partners such as organoborons, aryl silanes, alkenes, alkynes, arylation or alkylation reagents in C-H functionalization and carbonylation reactions are summarized, in which arylhydrazines or quaternary ammonium salts function as aryl or alkyl donors. This account mainly focuses on recent advances in Pd-catalyzed coupling reactions with arylhydrazines or quaternary ammonium salts via C-N bond cleavage, including mechanistic elucidations.

Hydroxysulfonylation of alkenes: an update

The direct difunctionalization of inexpensive and widely available alkenes has been recognized as a strong and straightforward tool for the rapid fabrication of complex molecules and pharmaceutical targets by introducing two different functional groups on adjacent carbon atoms of common alkene moieties in a single operation. This synthetic strategy avoids the purification and isolation of the intermediates and thus makes synthetic schemes shorter, simpler and cleaner. In this family of reactions, the hydroxysulfonylation of alkenes has emerged as an increasingly promising strategy for the synthesis of β-hydroxysulfones, which are found in many biologically important molecules and widespread applications in organic synthesis. The objective of this review is to illustrate the advancements in the field of hydroxysulfonylation of alkenes with special emphasis on the mechanistic details of the reaction pathways.

Intermolecular difunctionalization of alkenes: synthesis of β-hydroxy sulfides

Direct difunctionalization of carbon-carbon double bonds is one of the most powerful tools available for concomitant introduction of two functional groups into olefinic substrates. In this context, vicinal hydroxysulfenylation of unactivated alkenes has emerged as a novel and straightforward strategy for the fabrication of β-hydroxy sulfides, which are extremely valuable starting materials in constructing various natural products, pharmaceuticals, and fine chemicals. The aim of this review is to summarize the most representative and important reports on the preparation of β-hydroxy sulfides through intermolecular hydroxysulfenylation of the corresponding alkenes with special emphasis on the mechanistic features of the reactions.

Strategy for the Use of Molecular Oxygen in Organic Synthesis

Our recent studies on the development of new synthetic methods using molecular oxygen (O2), which is an environmentally friendly oxidant, are described in this Account. The character of O2 as an electron acceptor can be utilized for activation of simple organic molecules to generate reactive species. Such reactive species are applicable to advanced molecular transformation, such as C–C and C–X (X = heteroatom) bond formation, functionalization of inactivated C(sp3)–H, and catalytic Mitsunobu reaction, by avoiding direct quenching of the reactive species by O2.

Recent progress in application of nanocatalysts for carbonylative Suzuki cross-coupling reactions

In the past few decades, cross-coupling of aryl halides and arylboronic acids in the presence of carbon monoxide (CO), also called carbonylative Suzuki coupling, to form two new carbon-carbon bonds in the production of synthetically and biologically important biaryl ketones, has been widely studied. Consequently, various catalytic systems have been extensively investigated in order to maximize the efficiency of this appealing area of biaryl ketone synthesis. As evidenced in the literature, nanometal-based systems are among the most powerful catalysts for this transformation as their large surface area to volume ratio and reactive morphologies allow faster reaction rates under milder CO pressure even at very low catalyst loadings. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent advances and achievements in the application of nano-sized metal catalysts for carbonylative Suzuki cross-coupling reactions, which may serve as an inspiration to researchers in their future work.

There is therefore continuing interest in the development of novel and convenient protocols for the preparation of these pharmaceutically important compounds. Recently, direct sulfonamidation of (hetero)aromatic C–H bonds with easily available sulfonyl azides has emerged as an attractive and powerful strategy to access N-(hetero)aryl sulfonamides where non-toxic nitrogen gas forms as the sole by-product. This review highlights recent advances and developments (2012–2020) in this fast growing research area with emphasis on the mechanistic features of the reactions.

Cross-dehydrogenative coupling reactions between two unmodified C(X)-H bonds have recently emerged as a versatile and powerful strategy for the fabrication of new C(X)-C(X) bonds. In this context, several procedures have been reported for the synthesis of aromatic amines through the direct amination of aromatic C-H bonds with free amines. This review highlights recent advances and progress in this appealing research arena, with special emphasis on the mechanistic features of the reactions.

A template free protocol for fabrication of a Ni(ii)-loaded magnetically separable nanoreactor scaffold for confined synthesis of unsymmetrical diaryl sulfides in water

In the present report, an environmentally benign magnetically recoverable nickel(ii)-based nanoreactor as a heterogeneous catalyst has been developed via a template free approach. The catalytic performance of the synthesized catalyst is assessed in the confined oxidative coupling of arenethiols with arylhydrazines to form unsymmetrical diaryl sulfides under aerobic conditions. The salient features of our protocol include oxidant- and ligand-free conditions, use of water as a green solvent, room temperature and formation of nitrogen and water as the only by-products. Moreover, a broad range of functional groups are tolerated well and provide the corresponding diaryl sulfides in moderate to good yields. Moreover, the heterogeneous nature of the catalyst permits facile magnetic recovery and reusability for up to seven runs, making the present protocol highly desirable from industrial and environmental standpoints.

K2S2O8 mediated C-3 arylation of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones under metal-, photocatalyst- and light-free conditions

Two facile and effective C-3 arylation protocols of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones with arylhydrazines and aryl boronic acids respectively via free radical cross-coupling reactions under metal-, photocatalyst- and light-free conditions have been unveiled. K₂S₂O₈ has been used as an efficient oxidant to generate aryl radicals from arylhydrazines and aryl boronic acids under two different reaction conditions. The generated aryl radicals undergo a free radical coupling reaction at the C-3 position of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones producing 3-arylquinoxalin-2(1H)-ones in good to excellent yields. The involvement of radicals in the course of the reaction has been demonstrated by radical trapping experiments with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl.

The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the direct trifluoromethylation of olefinic C-H bonds with special attention on the mechanistic aspects of the reactions. The review is divided into two major sections. The first focuses exclusively on trifluoromethylation of terminal alkenes, while the second will cover trifluoromethylation of internal alkenes. Surfactant-Type Catalyst for Aerobic Oxidative Coupling of Hydrazine with Thiol in Water

A series of PEG-functionalized nitrogen ligands were developed to conduct an aerobic oxidative cross-coupling reaction between alkyl- or aryl-hydrazines with thiols in water. This surfactant-type catalyst enables high efficiencies and selectivities, while tolerating a large variety of functional groups. The mother liquor is still catalytically active after five runs.

Cross-dehydrogenative coupling reactions between two unmodified C–H bonds are one of the most attractive and fundamental strategies for the construction of C–C bonds. As these reactions avoid pre-functionalization and de-functionalization of the substrates, they are cleaner, safer, and faster than traditional cross-coupling reactions. After the introduction of the modern area of cross-dehydrogenative coupling in 2003, many efforts have been devoted to the development of more efficient and selective catalytic systems for these appealing reactions. Among the different types of catalytic systems that have been investigated, nanostructured metal catalysts are highly attractive in view of their high catalytic performance, easy separability and good reusability. The purpose of this review is to focus on the application of nanocatalysts for cross-dehydrogenative coupling of C–H bonds with particular emphasis on the mechanistic aspects of the reactions. Specifically, we have structured this review based on the type of C–C bonds. Thus, the review is divided into six major sections: (i) C(sp³)–C(sp³) coupling; (ii) C(sp³)–C(sp²) coupling; (iii) C(sp³)–C(sp) coupling; (iv) C(sp²)–C(sp²) coupling; (v) C(sp²)–C(sp) coupling; and (vi) C(sp)–C(sp) coupling.
