Facile synthesis of novel calcium silicate hydrated-nylon 6/66 nanocomposites by solution mixing method

Robust construction of polyvinyl alcohol intercalated graphene oxide nanofiltration membrane for desalination via pervaporation

The construction and modification of a Graphene Oxide (GO) membrane, incorporating polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cross-linked with maleic acid (MA) and supported by a nylon membrane, have been successfully completed. Systematic variations in PVA and MA concentrations were conducted to achieve membranes with favorable characteristics, stability, and excellent desalination performance. Optimization studies utilizing the Central Composite Design (CCD) revealed that the most optimal desalination results were obtained with 10 mL of PVA (0.1 mg mL-1) and 0.9 M of MA (GO-MA0.9-PVA10/Nylon membrane). Experimental findings demonstrated that the inclusion of PVA and MA resulted in an increased interlayer distance of GO and enhanced membrane stability. The addition of PVA increases GO membrane hydrophilicity, while the addition of MA reduces membrane hydrophilicity. The GO-MA0.9-PVA10/Nylon membrane exhibited the highest desalination performance, boasting a rejection value exceeding >99.9% and a permeance of 18.76 kg m-2.h-1 under 1% NaCl feed at a temperature of 50 °C. This membrane demonstrated consistent desalination performance stability over an extended period of up to 70 h. Moreover, it exhibited durability through 8 cycles of 24-h usage with washing treatment. In conclusion, the GO-MA0.9-PVA10/Nylon membrane is strongly recommended for practical applications, outperforming other membrane options based on the comprehensive evaluation of its stability and desalination efficiency.

Functional Technical Textile-Based Polymer Nanocomposites with Adsorbent Properties of Toxins and Dyes also Have Antibacterial Behavior

This is the first study of non-woven fabrics elaborated by melt-blowing from polymer nanocomposites made of Nylon 6 and nanoclay (Cloisite 20A) modified with an amine (1,4 diaminobutane dihydrochloride). Morphological and physical characteristics, adsorption capacity, and antibacterial properties are presented. From the X-ray diffraction (XRD) results, it was possible to observe a displacement of the signals to other 2θ angles, due to an α to ϒ phase shift. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the mean diameter of fiber decreased as the content of nanoclay increased. The mechanical tests showed that the tear strength force of neat nylon was 1.734 N, but this characteristic increased to 2.135 N for the sample with 0.5% modified nanoclay. The inulin adsorption efficiency of the Nylon 6/C20A 1.5% and Nylon 6/C20A 2% samples at 15 min was 75 and 74%, respectively. The adsorption capacity of Nylon 6/C20A 1.5% and Nylon 6/C20A 2% for methylene blue and methyl orange remained above 90% even after four adsorption cycles. In addition, non-woven fabrics present antibacterial activity against E. coli.

Effects of type and distribution of clay minerals on the physico-chemical and geomechanical properties of engineered porous rocks

The study of the properties of engineered rocks is of great importance to researchers in engineering sciences such as petroleum, mining, and civil engineering owing to their wide application in these fields. In the present study, a physico-chemical and geomechanical investigation was carried out on the effects of different clay minerals on porous rocks. Various chemical products formed during chemical interactions between cement, clay minerals, and water can change the pore structure and thus the rock characteristics. The results of the current study showed that increasing the clay content could remarkably reduce the porosity and permeability of the rock by an average of 86% and 6.76%, respectively. In this regard, samples containing kaolinite were further influenced due to their new pore structure. Moreover, a power relationship was found between sonic velocity and porosity, which can be used to predict rock properties. Chemical analysis indicated an amplification in quantities of chemical products, particularly calcium silicate hydrate and portlandite, due to an increase in clay content. The impacts of porosity and cementation quality as two main factors on rock strength have also been studied. The outcomes revealed that a reduction in porosity could compensate for detrimental effects of poor bond quality and consequently improved UCS by up to 30% in samples containing kaolinite, while decreasing the degree of cementation prevailed over the porosity reduction in specimens including illite and resulted in a 14% decrease in UCS. The effects of porosity and bond quality on UCS would cancel each other out in samples containing bentonite. It is worth noting that when it comes to changes in geomechanical characteristics, the dominant factor (i.e., porosity reduction or cementation quality) determines the ultimate effect of clay minerals on the properties of engineered porous rocks.

Influence of Modified Carbon Black on Nylon 6 Nonwoven Fabric and Performance as Adsorbent Material

The number of chronic kidney disease (CKD) persons continues to rise in Mexico. They require renal replacement therapy, and in the absence of it, hemodialysis is the major option for their survival. The uremic toxins present in the blood are removed by hemodialysis, which involve membranes. In this study, nonwoven fabrics with modified carbon black nanoparticles in a matrix polymer of Nylon 6 were obtained and evaluated as an adsorbent material of uremic toxins. All nonwoven fabrics were characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, SEM, and contact angle measurements and were evaluated as an adsorbent material for the urea toxin and as an albumin retainer. The findings suggest their potential application as a hemodialysis membrane. Nanocomposites had a higher hydrophilic characteristic compared to pure Nylon 6. The average diameter size of the fibers was in the range of 5 to 50 μm. All nanocomposites nonwoven fabrics showed high removal percentages of inulin in a range of 80-85% at 15 min of contact. Most Ny6 Zytel/CB nanocomposites showed a high percentage of urea removal (80 to 90%).

Two-Dimensional calcium silicate nanosheets for trapping atmospheric water molecules in humidity-immune gas sensors

In humid conditions, water vapor can easily neutralize the surface active sites of metal oxide sensors, leading to a lowering in the sensitivity of the gas sensor and a resultant inaccurate signal in practical applications. Herein, we present a new hybrid sensor by introducing a two-dimensional calcium silicate (CS) nanosheet as a water-trapping layer in SnO₂ nanowires. Unlike the heavily wrinkled and aggregated morphology of conventional CS nanosheets, our nanosheet in the hybrid material is ultrathin and flat. Moreover, it was grown in the empty spaces between the spider-web-like networks of SnO₂ nanowires without covering the nanowire surface. These two morphological features improve moisture trapping with minimal reduction in the active sensing area. Consequently, stable and sensitive gas detection under humid conditions was achieved in this hybrid sensor. The superior humidity-independent sensing is ascribed to the preferential adsorption of water molecules on hydroscopic CS nanosheets through the hydrogen bond. Based on density functional theory calculations, we determined that the improved gas response is driven by the additional formation of oxygen vacancy in SnO₂ due to the diffusion of aliovalent Ca ions from the CS nanosheet.

Enzymatic degradation of ginkgolic acids by laccase immobilized on core/shell Fe3O4/nylon composite nanoparticles using novel coaxial electrospraying process

Enzyme immobilization can increase enzyme reusability to reduce cost of industrial production. Ginkgo biloba leaf extract is commonly used for medical purposes, but it contains ginkgolic acid, which has negative effects on human health. Here, we report a novel approach to solve the problem by degrading the ginkgolic acid with immobilized-laccase, where core/shell composite nanoparticles prepared by coaxial electrospraying might be first applied to enzyme immobilization. The core/shell Fe₃O₄/nylon 6,6 composite nanoparticles (FNCNs) were prepared using one-step coaxial electrospraying and can be simply recovered by magnetic force. The glutaraldehyde-treated FNCNs (FNGCNs) were used to immobilize laccase. As a result, thermal stability of the free laccase was significantly improved in the range of 60-90 °C after immobilization. The laccase-immobilized FNGCNs (L-FNGCNs) were applied to degrade the ginkgolic acids, and the rate constants (k) and times (τ₅₀) were ~0.02 min^-1 and lower than 39 min, respectively, showing good catalytic performance. Furthermore, the L-FNGCNs exhibited a relative activity higher than 0.5 after being stored for 21 days or reused for 5 cycles, showing good storage stability and reusability. Therefore, the FNGCNs carrier was a promising enzyme immobilization system and its further development and applications were of interest.

Synthesis of Nylon 6/Modified Carbon Black Nanocomposites for Application in Uric Acid Adsorption

High uric acid levels cause different clinic conditions. One of them is hyperuricemia, which leads to kidney damage. A solution for eliminating uric acid in the blood is by hemodialysis, which is performed using nanocomposite membranes. In this work, Nylon 6 nanocomposites were synthesized with modified carbon black (MCB), which were considered candidate materials for hemodialysis membranes. The modification of carbon black was made with citric acid using the variable-frequency ultrasound method. The new MCB was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dispersion tests. Nylon 6/MCB nanocomposites were processed using the ultrasound-assisted melt-extrusion method to improve the dispersion procedure of the nanoparticles. The Nylon 6/MCB nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, TGA, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These were assessed for the absorption of toxins and hemocompatibility. MBC and nanocomposites showed excellent uric acid removal (78-82%) and hemocompatibility (1.6-1.8%). These results suggest that Nylon 6/MCB nanocomposites with low loading percentages can be used on a large scale without compatibility problems with blood.

Intrinsic Effect of Nanoparticles on the Mechanical Rupture of Doubled-Shell Colloidal Capsule via In Situ TEM Mechanical Testing and STEM Interfacial Analysis

The discovery of Pickering emulsion templated assembly enables the design of a hybrid colloidal capsule with engineered properties. However, the underlying mechanisms by which nanoparticles affect the mechanical properties of the shell are poorly understood. Herein, in situ mechanical compression on the transmission electron microscope and aberration-corrected scanning transmission microscope are unprecedentedly implemented to study the intrinsic effect of nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of the calcium carbonate (CaCO₃ )-decorated silica (SiO₂ ) colloidal capsule. The stiff and brittle nature of the colloidal capsule is due to the interfacial chemical bonding between the CaCO₃ nanoparticles and SiO₂ inner shell. Such bonding strengthens the mechanical strength of the SiO₂ shell (166 ± 14 nm) from the colloidal capsule compared to the thicker single SiO₂ shell (310 ± 70 nm) from the silica hollow sphere. At elevated temperature, this interfacial bonding accelerates the formation of the single calcium silicate shell, causing shell morphology transformation and yielding significantly enhanced mechanical strength by 30.9% and ductility by 94.7%. The superior thermal durability of the heat-treated colloidal capsule holds great potential for the fabrication of the functional additives that can be applied in the wide range of applications at elevated temperatures.
