Synthesis and Characterization of MOF-Derived Structures: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

Due to their facile tunability, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are employed as precursors and templates to construct advanced functional materials with unique and desired chemical, physical, mechanical, and morphological properties. By tuning MOF precursor composition and manipulating conversion processes, various MOF-derived materials commonly known as MOF derivatives can be constructed. The possibility of controlled and predictable properties makes MOF derivatives a preferred choice for numerous advanced technological applications. The innovative synthetic designs besides the plethora of interdisciplinary characterization approaches applicable to MOF derivatives provide the opportunity to perform a myriad of experiments to explore the performance and offer key insight to develop the next generation of advanced materials. Though there are many published works of literature describing various synthesis and characterization techniques of MOF derivatives, it is still not clear how the synthesis mechanism works and what are the best techniques to characterize these materials to probe their properties accurately. In this review, the recent development in synthesis techniques and mechanisms for a variety of MOF derivates such as MOF-derived metal oxides, porous carbon, composites/hybrids, and sulfides is summarized. Furthermore, the details of characterization techniques and fundamental working principles are summarized to probe the structural, mechanical, physiochemical, electrochemical, and electronic properties of MOF and MOF derivatives. The future trends and some remaining challenges in the synthesis and characterization of MOF derivatives are also discussed.

Fabrication of Bi2O3/Bismuth Titanates Modified with Metal-Organic Framework-In2S3/CdIn2S4 Materials for Electrocatalytic H2 Production and Its Photoactivity

Compositional and structural elucidation of the materials is important to know their properties, chemical stability, and electro-photoactivity. The heterojunction electrocatalyst and photocatalyst activity could open a new window for solving the most urgent environmental and energy problems. Here, for the first time, we have designed and fabricated Bi2O3/bismuth titanates modified with MOF-In2S3/CdIn2S4 materials by a stepwise process. The detailed structural elucidation and formation of mixed composite phases were studied in detail. It has been found that the formed composite was efficiently utilized for the electrocatalytic H2 production reaction and the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline. XRD patterns for the metal-organic framework-In2S3 showed a main compound of MOF, and it was assigned to a MIL-53 MOF phase, with a monoclinic structure. The addition of CdCl2 onto the MOF-In2S3 phase effectively produced a CdIn2S4 flower platform on the MOF rods. The uniform dispersion of the bismuth titanates in MOF-In2S3/CdIn2S4 materials is detected by mapping of elements obtained by dark-field HAADF-STEM. Finally, the predictions of how to integrate experiments and obtain structural results more effectively and their common development in new heterojunctions for electro-/photocatalytic applications are presented.

Metal-organic framework based drug delivery systems as smart carriers for release of poorly soluble drugs hydrochlorothiazide and dapsone

Drug delivery systems (DDSs) that are derived from biocompatible carriers are attractive platforms for sustained release of drugs. In particular, sustained and controlled release of poorly soluble BCS (Biopharmaceutics Classification System) class IV drugs is important and this requires the development of new DDSs. In this work, we exploit two porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-53(Fe) as carriers/DDSs for the release of two BCS class IV drugs hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) and dapsone (DAP). The chosen MOFs are known to possess good physicochemical stability and we realized high drug loading capacity that is attributed to the high porosity of the MOFs. The drug-encapsulated MOFs were characterized thoroughly and our results show ∼23.1% loading of HCT in MIL-100(Fe) and ∼27.6% loading of DAP in MIL-Fe(53), respectively. The release study of these drugs was carried out under simulated physiological conditions that shows sustained release of the drug molecules from the MOFs up to 72 h. Cell viability studies through MTT assays show insignificant cytotoxicity signalling biocompatibility of the proposed DDSs. Our investigations suggest MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-53(Fe) are potential DDSs for enhancing the performance of poorly soluble drugs HCT and DAP.

Chiral "doped" MOFs: an electrochemical and theoretical integrated study

This work reports on the electrochemical behaviour of Fe and Zn based metal-organic framework (MOF) compounds, which are "doped" with chiral molecules, namely: cysteine and camphor sulfonic acid. Their electrochemical behaviour was thoroughly investigated via "solid-state" electrochemical measurements, exploiting an "ad hoc" tailored experimental set-up: a paste obtained by carefully mixing the MOF with graphite powder is deposited on a glassy carbon (GC) surface. The latter serves as the working electrode (WE) in cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. Infrared (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and absorbance (UV-Vis) techniques are exploited for a further characterization of the MOFs' structural and electronic properties. The experimental results are then compared with DFT based quantum mechanical calculations. The electronic and structural properties of the MOFs synthesized in this study depend mainly on the type of metal center, and to a minor extent on the chemical nature of the dopant.

Low-temperature molten salt synthesis and catalytic mechanism of CoS2/NC as an advanced bifunctional electrocatalyst

The development of productive and sustainable bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays an important role in the commercial evolution of metal-air batteries. In this paper, a low-temperature molten salt template method was adopted to synthesize the composite of CoS₂ and nitrogen-doped carbon (CoS₂/NC) without the protection of inert gas. The structural characterization studies show that the specific surface area (SSA) and crystal growth kinetics are increased and effectively improved, respectively, by the composite of CoS₂ and NC. The as-synthesized CoS₂/NC composite demonstrates outstanding bifunctional catalytic activity in alkaline electrolytes and exhibits a half-wave potential (E_1/2) of 0.854 V (vs. RHE) and an overpotential of only 220 mV for the OER at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 (η₁₀). Simultaneously, CoS₂/NC also exhibits excellent electrochemical stability. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have manifested that the synergistic effect of CoS₂ and NC results in a remarkable enhancement in the bifunctional catalytic performance of the composite materials. This study offers a new pathway and theoretical guidance for the fabrication of efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Structure Features and Physicochemical Performances of Fe-Contained Clinoptilolites Obtained via the Aqueous Exchange of the Balanced Cations and Isomorphs Substitution of the Heulandite Skeletons for Electrocatalytic Activity of Oxygen Evolution Reaction and Adsorptive Performance of CO2

Fe(III)-modified clinoptilolites (Fe-CPs) were prepared by hydrothermal treatment. The collapse of the heulandite skeletons was avoided by adjusting the pH value using HCl solution, showing the maximum relative crystallinity of the Fe-CPs at an optimal pH of 1.3. The competitive exchange performances between Fe³⁺ ions and H⁺ with Na⁺ (and K⁺) suggested that the exchange sites were more easily occupied by H⁺. Various characterizations verified that the hydrothermal treatments had a strong influence on the dispersion and morphology of the isolated and clustered Fe species. The high catalytic activity of the oxygen evolution reaction indicated the insertion of Fe³⁺ into the skeletons and the occurrences of isomorphic substitution. The fractal evolutions revealed that hydrothermal treatments with the increase of Fe content strongly affected the morphologies of Fe species with rough and disordered surfaces. Meanwhile, the Fe(III)-modified performances of the CPs were systematically investigated, showing that the maximum Fe-exchange capacity was up to 10.6 mg/g. Their thermodynamic parameters and kinetic performances suggested that the Fe(III)-modified procedures belonged to spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-increasing behaviors. Finally, their adsorption capacities of CO₂ at 273 and 298 K were preliminarily evaluated, showing high CO₂ adsorption capacity (up to 1.67 mmol/g at 273 K).

Constructing tunable coordinatively unsaturated sites in Fe-based metal-organic framework for effective degradation of pharmaceuticals in water: Performance and mechanism

Micropollutants are ubiquitously detected in the aqueous environment, which needs to be removed by novel materials effectively. Herein, we synthesized a photo-Fenton catalyst based on MIL-53 (Fe) to effectively degrade sulfadimidine, one of the micropollutants in water. Abundant Lewis acid active sites (54.26 μmol/g) were successfully constructed within the metal cluster using FeCl₃·6H₂O, 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate, and modulators. This study reports a strategy by effectively constructing tunable Lewis acid active sites within the cavities in MIL-53 (Fe) via a facile solvothermal reaction for sixteen micropollutants removal. The photo-Fenton degradation of sulfamethazine was completely removed (∼99%) within only 1 min with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide added. Both theoretical calculation and the experiment results prove that introducing the unsaturated coordinated/lewis acid sites can remarkably reduce the band gap energy and increase the charge-separation efficiency by changing the electron configuration with more distribution asymmetry of structures. The effective degradation of structurally diverse pharmaceuticals with environmentally relevant concentrations was studied by immobilizing MOF-catalyst into a PVDF support. This work advanced the development of effective approaches for emergency contaminants control.

Vertically grown CeO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles over the MIL53Fe MOF as proper band alignments for efficient H2 generation and 2,4-DCP degradation

The design of highly efficient photoca talysts for clean energy production and environmental remediation are the grand challenges of scientific research. Herein, TiO₂@MIL53Fe and CeO₂@MIL53Fe composite photocatalysts are synthesized via solvothermal technique. The SEM and TEM micrographs reveal that TiO₂ and CeO₂ nanoparticles are vertically grown onto the surface of MIL53Fe MOF. Further, HRTEM micrograph confirmed the formation of heterojunction. It has been investigated that the resultant TiO₂@MIL53Fe and CeO₂@MIL53Fe photocatalysts exhibit remarkably improved visible light activities for H₂ production and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) degradation in comparison to the bare MIL53Fe photocatalyst. The enhanced photoactivities of the fabricated TiO₂@MIL53Fe and CeO₂@MIL53Fe photocatalysts are attributed to significantly promoted charge separation as confirmed via the surface photo voltage (SPV) and photoluminescence (PL) results. Further, the photocatalysts exhibit high stability and reusability as confirmed via the recyclable tests. This work will promote the design of MOF-based efficient photocatalysts for clean energy production and environment purification.

A new cotton functionalized with iron(III) trimer-like metal framework as an effective strategy for the adsorption of triarylmethane dye: An insight into the dye adsorption processes

A new Cotton@Fe-BTC composite formed by Fe-BTC (BTC-H3: trimesic acid) metal framework (Fe-BTC MOF loading as high 38 wt %) supported by cellulose fiber is synthesized in aqueous media using a simple and green preparation method, described for the first time in this manuscript. This new strategy relies on the synergetic effect of the pure cellulose and MOFs frameworks resulting in hybrid nanofibers of MOFs@cellulose composite. A complete characterization of the composite material reveals its structural similarity to MIL-100(Fe), a Fe-BTC material. The Cotton@Fe-BTC composite potential use as an eco-friendly and low-cost adsorbent was evaluated for its adsorptive performance for the removal of dye belonging to the triarylmethane dye family (Malachite Green (MQ), Brilliant Green (BG), Pararosaniline (PR), Basic Fuchsine (BF), Crystal Violet (CV), Methyl Green (Met-G), Victoria Blue B (VB), Acid Fuchsin (AF) and Aniline Blue (AB)) in aqueous solution. The fast kinetics and high dye removal efficiencies (>90%) obtained in aqueous solutions. The structure of Cotton@Fe-BTC network, contributed to the remarkable adsorption properties towards a variety of triphenylmethanedye. The interparticle studies showed two main steps in the dye adsorption processes, with the exception of AF and BG. The equilibrium adsorption capacities qe (mg/g) follow the order: AF (3.64) Collapse

Adsorptive removal of dyes from wastewater using a metal-organic framework: A review

Water pollution from synthetic dyes is a growing environmental concern because many dyes have carcinogenic effects on humans and aquatic life. Adsorption is a widely used technology for the separation and removal of dyes from wastewater. However, the dye removal process using conventional adsorbents is not sufficiently efficient for industrial wastewater. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) addresses these drawbacks. MOF showed excellent dye removal and degradation capacity owing to its multifunctionality, water-stability, large surface area, tunable pore size and recyclability. Magnetic MOFs retained excellent performance up to several consecutive cycles. Modified MOFs performed as Fenton-like catalysis process which generated abundant reactive radicals that degraded complex organic dyes into simple and less toxic forms which were further adsorbed onto the MOF. This review systematically compiles in-depth studies on the adsorptive removal of dyes from wastewater, MOF adsorption mechanisms, major influencing factors, to adsorption efficiency of MOFs. While all MOFs adsorb dyes through electrostatic attraction, the type of MOF, presence of functional groups, ligands, and pH significantly control the adsorption mechanism. Before developing an MOF, optimization and upgradation of factors and interaction between available adsorption site and adsorbate is needed. Finally, the prospects and new frontiers of MOFs in sustainable water treatment is discussed.

New frontiers and prospects of metal-organic frameworks for removal, determination, and sensing of pesticides

Pesticides have been widely used in agriculture to control, reduce, and kill insects. Humans are also being using pesticides to control insidious animals in daily life. By these practices, a huge volume of pesticides is introduced to the environment. Despite broad-spectrum applicability, pesticides also have hazardous effects on both humans and animals at high and low concentrations. Long-term exposure to pesticides can cause different diseases, like leukemia, lymphoma, and cancers of the brain, breasts, prostate, testis, and ovaries. Reproductive disorders from pesticides include birth defects, stillbirth, spontaneous abortion, sterility, and infertility. Therefore, the application of determination and treatment methods for pre-concentration and removal of these toxic materials from the environment appears a vital concern. To date, different materials and approaches have been employed for these purposes. Among these approaches, multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-assisted adsorption and determination processes have always been in the spotlight. These facts are due to exclusive properties of MOFs in terms of the crystallinity, large surface area, high chemical, and physical stability, and controllable structure as well as unique features of adsorption and determination process in terms of simple, easy, cheap, available method and ability to use in large and industrial scales. In the present work, we illustrate the exceptional features of MOFs as well as the possible mechanism for the adsorption of pesticides by MOFs. The use of these fantastic materials for pre-concentration and removal of pesticides are extensively explored. In addition, the performance of MOFs was compared with other adsorbents. Finally, the new frontiers and prospects of MOFs for the determination, sensing, and removal of pesticides are presented.

Porous framework-based hybrid materials for solar-to-chemical energy conversion: from powder photocatalysts to photoelectrodes

Porous framework materials such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be considered promising materials for solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

Investigation on Electroreduction of CO2 to Formic Acid Using Cu3(BTC)2 Metal-Organic Framework (Cu-MOF) and Graphene Oxide

A recent class of porous materials, viz., metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), finds applications in several areas. In this work, Cu-based MOFs (Cu-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid) along with graphene oxide, viz., Cu-MOF/GO, are synthesized and used further for reducing CO2 electrochemically. The reduction was accomplished in various supporting electrolytes, viz., KHCO3/H2O, tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB)/dimethylformamide (DMF), KBr/CH3OH, CH3COOK/CH3OH, TBAB/CH3OH, and tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAP)/CH3OH to know their effect on product formation. The electrode fabricated with the synthesized material was used for testing the electroreduction of CO2 at various polarization potentials. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 is carried out via the polarization technique within the experimented potential regime vs saturated calomel electrode (SCE). Ion chromatography was employed for the analysis of the produced products in the electrolyte, and the results showed that HCOOH was the main product formed through reduction. The highest concentrations of HCOOH formed for different electrolytes are 0.1404 mM (-0.1 V), 66.57 mM (-0.6 V), 0.2690 mM (-0.5 V), 0.2390 mM (-0.5 V), 0.7784 mM (-0.4 V), and 0.3050 mM (-0.45 V) in various supporting electrolyte systems, viz., KHCO3/H2O, TBAB/DMF, KBr/CH3OH, CH3COOK/CH3OH, TBAB/CH3OH, and TBAP/CH3OH, respectively. The developed catalyst accomplished a significant efficiency in the conversion and reduction of CO2. A high faradic efficiency of 58% was obtained with 0.1 M TBAB/DMF electrolyte, whereas for Cu-MOF alone, the efficiency was 38%. Thus, the work is carried out using a cost-effective catalyst for the conversion of CO2 to formic acid than using the commercial electrodes. The synergistic effect of GO sheets at 3 wt % concentration and Cu+OH- interaction leads to the formation of formic acid in various electrolytes.

Recent advances in pristine tri-metallic metal-organic frameworks toward the oxygen evolution reaction

Pristine metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received much attention in recent years due to their high specific surface areas, large porosity, excellent pore size distributions, flexible structure, and remarkable catalytic properties. The design of functional MOFs that can function as efficient HER and OER catalysts is significant in solving the energy crisis but remains a big challenge. Tri-metallic metal-organic frameworks show a good application prospect in water oxidation. In this review, we are going to focus on the latest progress and future trends in the development of pristine trimetallic MOFs with respect to the OER. The synergistic effect between multi-metal active sites is effective at improving the intrinsic activity of MOFs toward the OER. By summarizing the synthesis method of tri-metallic MOFs and observing their performance toward the oxygen evolution reaction, we hope that this review will trigger new developments in coordination chemistry, electrochemistry, nanomaterials and energy materials.

The facile boosting sunlight-driven photocatalytic performance of a metal–organic-framework through coupling with Ag2S nanoparticles

A facile method was successfully developed to tremendously boost sunlight-driven photocatalytic performance of a MOFs material (MIL-53(Fe)) by coupling with silver sulfide (Ag₂S) nanoparticles for the first time.

Metal–Organic Frameworks Toward Electrocatalytic Applications

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials constructed from metal-rich inorganic nodes and organic linkers. Because of their regular porosity in microporous or mesoporous scale and periodic intra-framework functionality, three-dimensional array of high-density and well-separated active sites can be built in various MOFs; such characteristics render MOFs attractive porous supports for a range of catalytic applications. Furthermore, the electrochemically addressable thin films of such MOF materials are reasonably considered as attractive candidates for electrocatalysis and relevant applications. Although it still constitutes an emerging subfield, the use of MOFs and relevant materials for electrocatalytic applications has attracted much attention in recent years. In this review, we aim to focus on the limitations and commonly seen issues for utilizing MOFs in electrocatalysis and the strategies to overcome these challenges. The research efforts on utilizing MOFs in a range of electrocatalytic applications are also highlighted.
