Novel ionic surface imprinting technology: design and application for selectively recognizing heavy metal ions

Magnetic Ion-Imprinted Materials for Selective Adsorption of Cr(VI): Adsorption Behavior and Mechanism Study

With the increase of hexavalent Cr(VI) wastewater discharged from industrial production, it seriously pollutes water bodies and poses a risk to human health. Adsorption is used as an effective means to treat Cr(VI), but its effectiveness is affected by pH, and the adsorption performance decreases when acidity is strong. Furthermore, research on the mechanism of Cr(VI) adsorption using DFT calculations needs to be developed. This study focuses on the development of magnetically responsive core-shell nano-ion imprinted materials (Fe3O4@GO@IIP) through magnetic separation and surface imprinting techniques. Characterization techniques including FT-IR, XRD, and EDS confirmed the core-shell nanostructure of Fe3O4@GO@IIP. Batch adsorption experiments and model simulations demonstrated the exceptional adsorption capacity of Fe3O4@GO@IIP for Cr(VI) in strongly acidic solutions (pH = 1), reaching a maximum of 89.18 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism was elucidated through XPS and DFT calculations, revealing that Fe3O4@GO@IIP operates through electrostatic interactions and chemical adsorption, with charge transfer dynamics quantified during the process. This research provides new insights for addressing Cr(VI) treatment in highly acidic environments.

"One-pot" preparation and adsorption performance of chitosan-based La3+/Y3+ dual-ion-imprinted thermosensitive hydrogel

Temperature-sensitive materials are increasingly of deep interest to researchers. Ion imprinting technology is widely used in the field of metal recovery. In order to solve the problem of rare earth metal recovery, we designed a temperature-sensitive dual-imprinted hydrogel adsorption product (CDIH) with chitosan as the matrix, N-isopropylacrylamide as a thermally responsive monomer, and La³⁺ and Y³⁺ as the co-templates. The reversible thermal sensitivity and ion-imprinted structure were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, Raman spectra, Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy spectroscopy various characterizations and analyses. The simultaneous adsorption amount of CDIH for La³⁺ and Y³⁺ was 87.04 mg/g and 90.70 mg/g, respectively. The quasi-secondary kinetic model and Freundlich isotherms model well described the adsorption mechanism of CDIH. It's worthy to mention that CDIH could be well regenerated through washing with deionized water at 20 °C, with a desorption rate of 95.29 % for La³⁺ and 96.03 % for Y³⁺. And after 10 cycles of reuse, 70 % of the adsorption amount could be maintained, revealing excellent reusability. Furthermore, CDIH expressed better adsorption selectivity to La³⁺ and Y³⁺ than its non-imprinted counterparts in a solution containing six metal ions.

Adsorption and desorption ability of divalent mercury from an interactive bicomponent sorption system using hybrid granular activated carbon

The sequestration of heavy metals from multicomponent sorption media has become critical due to the noxious effects of heavy metals on the natural environment and subsequently on human health as well as all life forms. The abatement of heavy metals using bio-adsorbents is one of the efficient and affordable approaches for treating water and wastewater. Therefore, the interactive effect of arsenic [As(III)] ions on the sorption and desorption ability of mercury [Hg(II)] from a binary sorption system was conducted. More so, the impact of reaction time, solution pH, bio-adsorbent particle size, bio-adsorbent dose, initial mono-metal, and binary-metal concentration as well as reaction temperature on the individual and competitive sorption of Hg(II) was explored. The study showed that Hg(II) could be removed effectively from the single-component system and competitively from the aqueous phases by the bio-adsorbent in the coexistence of As(III) species in the bicomponent medium. The adsorptive detoxification of Hg(II) from the monocomponent and bicomponent sorption media showed dependence on all the studied adsorption parameters. The occurrence of As(III) species in the bicomponent sorption medium affected the decontamination of Hg(II) by the bio-adsorbent and the major interactive mechanism was found to be antagonism. The spent bio-adsorbent was effectively recycled using 0.10 M nitric (HNO3) and hydrochloric (HCl) acids solutions and the multi-regeneration cycles showed a high removal efficiency in each cycle. The first regeneration cycle was found to have the highest Hg(II) ions removal efficiencies of 92.31 and 86.88% for the monocomponent and bicomponent systems, respectively. Thus, the bio-adsorbent was found to be mechanically stable and reusable up to the 6.00 regeneration cycle. Therefore, this study concludes that the bio-adsorbent not only has a higher adsorption capacity but also a good recycling performance pointing to good industrial applications and economic prospects.

Construction of 1, 10-phenanthroline functionalized magnetic starch as a lead (II) tagged surface imprinted biopolymer for highly selective targeting of toxic lead ions

In this research 1, 10 - phenanthroline functionalized CaFe₂O₄ - starch was employed as a magnetic ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) for highly selective targeting toxic Pb²⁺ ions from aqueous media. VSM analysis revealed that the sorbent has magnetic saturation of 10 emu g^-1 which is appropriate for magnetic separation. Moreover, TEM analysis confirmed that the adsorbent is composed of particles with a mean diameter of 10 nm. According to XPS analysis, lead coordination with phenanthroline is the main adsorption mechanism that is along with electrostatic interaction. A maximum adsorption capacity of 120 mg g^-1 was obtained within 10 min at a pH of 6 and an adsorbent dosage of 20 mg. Kinetic and isotherm studies showed that lead adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, respectively. The selectivity coefficient of Pb (II) relative to Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and Cd(II) was 4.7, 14, 20, 36, 13 and 25, respectively. Moreover, the IIP represents the imprinting factor of 1.32. The sorbent showed good regeneration after five cycles of the sorption/desorption process with an efficiency of >93 %. Finally represented IIP was used for lead preconcentration from various matrices i.e., water, vegetable, and fish samples.

A Note about Crosslinking Density in Imprinting Polymerization

Imprinting polymerization is an exciting technique since it leads to specific binding sites, which are the basis of a variety of applications, such as sensors, detectors, and catalysts. The specific binding sites are created using templates and then fixing the structure of the binding site with crosslinking. The literature review of imprinting polymerizations shows that the crosslinking density governs the physical properties of the resulting molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). It is also a factor governing the capacity and the selectivity of MIPs. Reviewing polymer science data and theory, the crosslinking density commonly used in MIP synthesis is unusually high. The data reviewed here suggest that more research is needed to determine the optimal crosslinking density for MIPs.

Direct identification of fish species by surface molecular transferring

With the expansion of the aquatic market and the large quantity of seafood consumption, the issues on safety, traceability and authenticity of seafood are becoming more and more important. Herein, a mass spectrometric method by direct analysis of fish samples was developed for fish authentication. A high-throughput matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF MS) technique was applied to analyze the substances on the fish skin, or the surface molecularly imprinted substances on the surface of muscle tissues using a MALDI-target plate. A multivariate analysis was executed on the obtained mass spectra, and plots of principal component analysis (PCA) for different fish samples were differently clustered in a 95% confidence level. The developed strategy was capable of classifying and identifying fish species. The molecular imprinting method was found with good analytical reproducibility. The strategy enables the distinguishment of fish samples in a quick, efficient and easy mode. It is promising to apply the presently developed strategy for the authentication of seafood and extend the protocol for the detection of other protein food products.

Adsorption of cadmium using modified zeolite-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron composites as a reactive material for PRBs

The main challenge in utilizing permeable reactive barriers (PRB) for remediation of metals-contaminated groundwater is determination of a proper low-cost reactive medium that can remove the desired contaminants simultaneously. In this study, the performance of different zeolite materials and nZVI-based adsorbents for cadmium (Cd) removal was compared. Further, a composite of the best nZVI and zeolite samples was synthesized with the removal efficiency of 20.6 g/kg and selected as the proposed adsorbent. Moreover, the characteristics of the composite were analyzed through different techniques (BET, XRF, XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM and EDX). In addition, through kinetic and thermodynamic studies, the effect of temperature, pH, ionic strength and presence of other metal ions on Cd removal efficiency was investigated. According to the results, since sodium zeolite (NaZ) provides a large number of specific ion-exchange sites for decoration with nZVI, stabilizes nZVI, and prevents its aggregation and further leaching in the harsh environment, the NaZ-nZVI composite is capable of removing Cd by adsorption and is applicable in PRBs, and thus it seems that the aforementioned composite is a proper candidate for groundwater remediation from a wide range of metal ions.

Preparation of monoethyl fumarate-based molecularly imprinted polymers and their application as a solid-phase extraction sorbent for the separation of scopolamine from tropane alkaloids

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) prepared using conventional functional monomers exhibit poor specific extraction of scopolamine from tropane alkaloids, which hinders their application in separation and purification. In this paper, a novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was prepared by precipitation polymerization using scopolamine as the template, monoethyl fumarate (MFMA) as a functional monomer, and ethylene dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linker. The advantages of the supercritical fluid technology for the removal of the template were verified by comparing the efficiency of the swelling method and the Soxhlet extraction method. The prepared MFMA-based MIPs (MFMA-MIPs) showed a high adsorption capacity (49.75 mg g⁻¹) and high selectivity toward scopolamine with a selectivity coefficient of 3.5. ¹H NMR spectroscopy was performed to demonstrate the interactions between the two functional groups of the functional monomer and the template. Lastly, MFMA-MIPs were used as solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbents for scopolamine analysis. It was found that 97.0–107.0% of the template had been extracted using the SPE column from the complex of scopolamine, atropine and anisodamine. The mean recoveries of scopolamine from plant samples were 96.0–106.0% using the established method, which showed a good linearity in the range of 8.0–4.0 × 10⁴ μg L⁻¹. The results showed that MFMA-MIPs could be applied for the separation of scopolamine from tropane alkaloids.
