Developing the structure-property relationship to design solid state multi-stimuli responsive materials and their potential applications in different fields

EDA Complex-Promoted Cascade Cyclization of Alkynes Enabling the Rapid Assembly of 3-Sulfonylindoles and Vinyl Sulfone Oxindoles

Herein, we disclose a photoinduced radical cascade cyclization of alkynes with sulfinates via a novel EDA complex for the synthesis of various 3-sulfonylindoles and vinyl sulfone oxindoles, which are crucial motifs in medicinal and biological chemistry. The reaction proceeds under mild, photocatalyst- and transition-metal-free conditions, featuring operational simplicity, broad substrate scope, and easy scalability. Mechanistic studies reveal that the reaction is initiated with a photoinduced intermolecular charge transfer from sulfinates to N-sulfonamides, generating a sulfonyl radical followed by an N-centered radical, thus enabling the cascade cyclization process.

The Photosalient Effect and Thermochromic Luminescence Based on o-Carborane-Assisted π-Stacking in the Crystalline State

Herein, we report the unique multiple-stimuli responsiveness of anthracene-tethered o-carborane derivatives. We designed and synthesized anthracene derivatives with different substitution positions and numbers of the o-carborane units. Two compounds had characteristic crystal structures involving the columnar π-stacking structures of the anthracene units. From the analysis of crystalline-state structure-property relationships, it was revealed that the crystals exhibited the photosalient effect accompanied by photochemical [4+4] cycloaddition reactions and temperature-dependent photophysical dual-emission properties including excimer emission of anthracene. Those properties were considered as non-radiative and radiative deactivation pathways through the excimer formation in the excited state and the formation of excimer species was facilitated by the π-stacking structure of anthracene units. Moreover, we found unusual temperature dependency on the occurrence of the photosalient effect. According to the data from variable temperature X-ray crystallography, a strong correlation between lattice shrinkage and strain accumulation is suggested.

Diaroyl-S,N-ketene Acetals: Red-Shifted Solid-State and Aggregation-Induced Emitters from a One-Pot Synthesis

Symmetric and unsymmetric diaroyl-S,N-ketene acetals can be readily accessed in consecutive syntheses in good to excellent yields by exploiting the inherent nucleophilic character of the methine position. Different aroyl-S,N-ketene acetals as well as acid chlorides yield a library of 19 diaroyl compounds with substitution and linker pattern-tunable emission properties, leading to a significant red-shift of emission in the solid and aggregated state, which was thoroughly investigated. Additionally, the stability of the luminescent aggregates is highly increased. In a follow-up one-pot procedure, pyrazolo-S,N-ketene acetals can easily be accessed employing a nucleophilic cyclocondensation.

π-Stacking among the Anthracenyl Groups of a Copper Complex Resulted in Doubling of Unit Cell Volume To Provide New Polymorphs

Two polymorphs of the 9-N-(3-imidazolylpropylamino)methylanthracene (Hanthraimmida) containing hydrated copper(II)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate complex are reported. The two polymorphs have either lamellar or Herringbone arrangements of π-stacks among the anthracenyl groups of organocation. The difference between the two polymorphs originated from having face-to-face stacking arrangements between the two anthracenyl groups of the symmetry independent cations within the unit cell in one of the polymorphs. The π-stacked anthracenyl groups in consecutive layers of the polymorphs are oriented in one direction in the polymorph designated as P1, whereas the polymorph designated as P2 has such orientations in opposite directions. The unit cell volume of the polymorph P2 (Z = 4) has approximately twice the volume of the polymorph P1 (Z = 2); it happend due to coalescence of two unit cells of P1 in the ab-crystallographic plane. A mixed methanol/water solvate of the copper complex is also reported. It has a channel-like arrangement of the cations; has the anions and the solvents within the cation embraced channel-like enclosures. This complex is unstable, once taken out from the methanol solvent, it transforms in real time to P2 by replacements of the methanol molecules by water molecules.

Sequential-Stimuli Induced Stepwise-Response of Pyridylpyrenes

Stimuli-responsive materials, especially multi-stimuli-responsive materials, can sense external stimuli such as light, heat, and force, have shown great potential in drug delivery, data storage, encryption, energy-harvesting, and artificial intelligence. Conventional multi-stimuli-responsive materials are sensitive to each independent stimulus, causing losses in the diversity and accuracy of the identification for practical application. Herein, a unique phenomenon of sequential-stimuli induced stepwise-response generated from elaborately designed single-component organic materials is reported, which shows large bathochromic shifts up to 5800 cm-1 under sequential stimuli of force and light. In contrast to multi-stimuli-responsive materials, the response of these materials strictly relies on the sequence of stimuli, allowing logicality, rigidity, and accuracy to be integrated into one single-component material. The molecular keypad lock is built based on these materials, pointing promising to a future for this logical response in significant practical applications. This breakthrough gives a new drive to classical stimuli-responsiveness and provides a fundamental design strategy for new generations of high-performance stimuli-responsive materials.

One stimulus-induced two-step photophysical response with high contrast and tunable switching time for dynamic displaying

One stimulus-induced two-step photophysical response, especially with tunable switching time, is a great challenge for organic chromophores. Herein, a polymorphic material 2,7-DCF could undergo in situ two sequential dual-channel responses upon dichloromethane fuming. Both the appearance color and the fluorescence change from red to yellow to deep red with high contrast. The first step corresponds to a fast amorphous-to-crystalline transformation, while the second is a slow solid-state cocrystallization process. Based on single crystal structures and theoretical calculations, such distinct color changes are mainly attributed to conformation twisting and the electron coupling with incorporated solvent molecule through C-H⋅⋅⋅O interaction. Importantly, the second slow photophysical response could be drastically sped up by seeding strategy, or be totally inhibited. Such characteristics pave a way for the potential applications in dynamic anti-counterfeiting and data encryption. Based on the two-step transformation, polymorph 2,7-DCF-a could achieve a successive four-level response to external stimuli. In contrast, polymorph 2,7-DCF-d exhibits a stepwise hypsochromic fluorescence shift over 100 nm. This study would significantly promote the development of stimuli-sensitive systems from "one stimulus, one-step response" to "one stimulus, two or multi-step response".

Copper-Catalyzed Sulfonylation/Cyclization of Pent-4-ynamides toward Sulfonyl-Functionalized Pyrrol-2-ones

A domino sulfonylation/intramolecular C-N coupling/dehydrogenation reaction was realized between pent-4-ynamides and sulfonyl chlorides by catalysis of Cu(acac)₂ and 2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)-1,1'-binaphthalene. The reaction provides a convenient approach to sulfonyl-functionalized pyrrol-2-ones. This method can also be applied to the synthesis of 3-alkylidene isoindolinones from 2-ethynyl-benzamides.

Polarity- and Pressure-Induced Emission from a Benzophenone-Based Luminophore

Since strong polarity usually causes emission quenching, materials with polarity-induced emission (PIE) are rarely reported despite their important applications in polar environments. Herein, an N-phenylcarbazole-substituted benzophenone derivative (BP-3-Cz) with a twisted electron donor-acceptor (D-A) structure is synthesized. The incorporation of heteroatoms into the twisted π-conjugated D-A backbone simultaneously endows BP-3-Cz with obvious polarity- and pressure-induced emission. Spectral analysis, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and quantum chemical calculation results confirm that BP-3-Cz has special optical features related to the molecular conformation change and excited state turning to planarized intramolecular charge transfer with an increase in polarity or applied pressure. These findings contribute to the understanding of the PIE mechanism and the design of new PIE materials.

Palladium-Catalyzed Chemodivergent Carbonylation of ortho-Bromoarylimine to Biisoindolinones and Spiroisoindolinones

We herein report a palladium-catalyzed carbonylative cyclization reaction of ortho-bromoarylimines that allows for the chemodivergent synthesis of functionalized biisoindolinones and spirocyclic isoindolinones. Either product could be selectively obtained by switching the reaction temperatures and ligands, and the biisoindolinone products could be afforded facilely with catalyst loadings as low as 0.05 mol %. Further transformation of the biisoindolinone product is also described, which represents a novel and concise approach to the biisoindoline diamine ligand.

Design and synthesis of piezochromic materials exploring intermolecular charge transfer: chalconoids bound to the p-sulfonatocalix[6]arene macrocycle

Solid-state systems composed of chalconoid encapsulated within p-sulfonatocalix[6]arene (SCX6) scaffolds that exhibit mechanochromism and thermochromism have been developed. An introduction of a supramolecular host promises a variety of applications in diverse areas, which makes them fascinating. Largely hydrogen bonding as well as π···π interactions are responsible for the host-guest complexation. The complex shows partial encapsulation of the guest with one of the phenyl rings of chalcone (guest) is held inside the SCX6 cavity, whilst other phenyl rings that exclude the cavity are hydrogen-bonded to sulfonate portals of the host. The hydrogen bonding conducing such complexation triggers proton transfer engendering a mechanochromic switch. The complexes are further characterized by a variety of experiments such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), steady-state fluorescence, vibrational spectroscopy, and ¹H or 2D NMR (NOESY) spectroscopy experiments. Detailed structure furnished through the NMR shows deshielding of the Ha-e (guest) protons whereas, the hydroxyl protons from the host experience shielding as evidenced from the ¹H NMR spectra. These inferences have further been corroborated through the density functional theory. Electrochemical investigations suggested an irreversible one-electron transfer in the host-guest binding. The characteristic 'frequency shift' for the intense carbonyl vibration in the infrared spectra, which can be correlated to the kinetic energy density parameter, G(r), in the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM).

Triphenylamine, Carbazole or Tetraphenylethylene-Functionalized Benzothiadiazole Derivatives: Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE), Solvatochromic and Different Mechanoresponsive Fluorescence Characteristics

The development of mechanochromic fluorophors with high-brightness, solid-state fluorescence is very significant and challenging. Herein, highly solid-state emissive triphenylamine, carbazole and tetraphenylethylene-functionalized benzothiadiazole derivatives were developed. These compounds showed remarkable aggregation-induced emission and solvatochromic fluorescence characteristics. Furthermore, these fluorogenic compounds also displayed different mechanically triggering fluorescence responses.

Three in One: Stimuli-Responsive Fluorescence, Solid-State Emission, and Dual-Organelle Imaging Using a Pyrene-Benzophenone Derivative

Small organic luminogens, owing to their contrasting stimuli-responsive fluorescence in solution along with strong emission in aggregated and solidstates, have been employed in optoelectronic devices, sensors, and bioimaging. Pyrene derivatives usually exhibit strong fluorescence and concentration-dependent excimer/aggregate emission in solution. However, the impacts of microenvironments on the monomer and aggregate emission bands and their relative intensities in solution, solid, and supramolecular aggregates are intriguing. The present study delineates a trade-off between the monomer and aggregate emissions of a pyrene-benzophenone derivative (ABzPy) in solution, in the solid-state, and in nanoaggregates through a combined spectroscopic and microscopic approach. The impact of external stimuli (viscosity, pH) on the aggregate emission was demonstrated using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy, including fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and fluorescence anisotropy decay analysis. The aggregate formation was noticed at a higher concentration (>10 μM) in solution, at 77 K (5 μM), and in the solid-state due to the π-π stacking interactions (3.6 Å) between two ABzPy molecules. In contrast, no aggregate formation was observed in the viscous medium as well as in a micellar environment even at a higher concentration of ABzPy (50 μM). The crystal structure analysis further shed light on the intermolecular hydrogen-bonding-assisted solid-state emission, which was found to be highly sensitive toward external stimuli like pH and mechanical forces. The broad emission band comprising both monomer and aggregate in the aqueous dispersion of nanoaggregates was used for the specific cellular imaging of lysosomes and lipid droplets, respectively.

Mechano-chromic and mechano-enhanced electrogenerated chemiluminescence of tetra[4-(4-cyanophenyl)phenyl]ethene

Mechano-chromic and mechano-enhanced ECL of tetra[4-(4-cyanophenyl)phenyl]ethene (TCPPE) is observed. TCPPE can be used as a promising mechano-chromic and mechano-enhanced luminescent material in rewritable and optical-recording.

Emergence of Aggregation Induced Emission (AIE), Room-Temperature Phosphorescence (RTP), and Multistimuli Response from a Single Organic Luminogen by Directed Structural Modification

Multifunctional organic luminogens exhibiting simultaneous aggregation induced emission (AIE), room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), and mechanochromism have recently attracted considerable attention owing to their potential applications in optoelectronics and bioimaging. However, a comprehensive correlation among these three distinguished properties is yet to be unveiled, which will help to decipher defined methodologies to design future generation multifunctional organic materials. Herein, we have demonstrated a route to obtain a multifunctional organic luminogen, starting from an ACQphore (TPANDI) by simple structural engineering. We have shown that a slight reduction in length of the planar acceptor moieties can effectively inhibit the undesirable π-π stacking interaction between molecules in the condensed state and thereby cause an ACQ to AIE type transformation from TPANDI to TPANMI and TPAPMI. Both TPANMI and TPAPMI exhibit RTP properties (even in ambient condition) because of the presence of a reasonably low singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE_ST). In our study, these two luminogens were found to be mechano-inactive. Interestingly, an insertion of cyano-ethylene group and benzene linker in between the triphenylamine and phthalimide moieties introduced another luminogen TPACNPMI, which can simultaneously exhibit AIE, RTP, and mechanochromic properties.

A C3-symmetric twisted organic salt as an efficient mechano-/thermo-responsive molecule: a reusable and sensitive fluorescent thermometer

C ₃-Symmetric triaminoguanidinium chloride is condensed with N-pentylphenothiazine carboxaldehyde to realise a thermally stable twisted organic salt on a gram scale. It appears as a nonmetallic economic salt having an integrated propeller shape with three tub-like cores and displays efficient reversible mechano- and thermo-fluorochromic behaviour. Unlike previous reports, the designed fluorescent, colorimetric thermometer works over a higher temperature range of 130-170 °C with five distinct colour variations.

Elastic Organic Crystals Based on Barbituric Derivative: Multi-faceted Bending and Flexible Optical Waveguide

Elastic organic single crystals with light-emitting and multi-faceted bending properties are extremely rare. They have potential application in optical materials and have attracted the extensive attention of researchers. In this paper, we reported a structurally simple barbituric derivative DBDT, which was easily crystallized and gained long needle-like crystals (centimeter-scale) in DCM/CH₃ OH (v/v=2/8). Upon applying or removing the mechanical force, both the (100) and (040) faces of the needle-like crystal showed reversible bending behaviour, showing the nature of multi-faceted bending. The average hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) were 0.28±0.01 GPa and 4.56±0.03 GPa for the (040) plane, respectively. Through the analysis of the single crystal data, it could be seen that the van der waals (C-H⋅⋅⋅π and C-H⋅⋅⋅C), H-bond (C-H⋅⋅⋅O) and π⋅⋅⋅π interactions between molecules were responsible for the generation of the crystal elasticity. Interestingly, elastic crystals exhibited optical waveguide characteristics in straight or bent state. The optical loss coefficients measured at 627 nm were 0.7 dBmm^-1 (straight state) and 0.9 dBmm^-1 (bent state), while the optical loss coefficient (α) were 1.5 dBmm^-1 (straight state) and 1.8 dBmm^-1 (bent state) at 567 nm. Notably, the elastic organic molecular crystal based on barbituric derivative could be used as the candidate for flexible optical devices.

Base-Promoted Cascade Reactions for the Synthesis of 3,3-Dialkylated Isoindolin-1-ones and 3-Methyleneisoindolin-1-ones

Cascade reactions of ortho-carbonyl-substituted benzonitriles with ((chloromethyl)sulfonyl)benzenes as pronucleophiles led to new isoindolin-1-ones with a tetrasubstituted C-3 position or to (Z)-3-(sulfonyl-methylene)isoindolin-1-ones. The reactions start from readily available materials, are carried out under mild conditions, and do not require metal catalysis. Promoted only by the cheap and environmentally benign K₂CO₃ as the base, up to six elemental steps can be combined in a single pot. Hence, a sequential one-pot cascade/β-elimination/alkylation furnished useful intermediates for the synthesis of aristolactam natural products. The observed selectivity and the mechanism were investigated by DFT studies.

Mapping the regioisomeric space and visible color range of purely organic dual emitters with ultralong phosphorescence components: From violet to red towards pure white-light

We mapped the entire visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum and achieved white light emission (CIE: 0.31, 0.34) by combining the intrinsic ns‐fluorescence with ultralong ms‐phosphorescence from purely organic dual emitters. We realized small molecular materials showing high photoluminescence quantum yields (Φ_L) in the solid state at room temperature, achieved by active exploration of the regioisomeric substitution space. Chromophore stacking‐supported stabilization of triplet excitons with assistance from enhanced intersystem crossing channels in the crystalline state played the primary role for the ultra‐long phosphorescence. This strategy covers the entire visible spectrum, based on organic phosphorescent emitters with versatile regioisomeric substitution patterns, and provides a single molecular source of white light with long lifetime (up to 163.5 ms) for the phosphorescent component, and high overall photoluminescence quantum yields (up to Φ_L=20 %).

A Novel Strategy to Design and Construct AIE-active Mechanofluorochromic Materials via Regulation of Molecular Structure

In this work, we first designed and synthesized tetraphenylene-fused aryl-imidazole derivatives TM-1-4 via regulation of molecular structure, which were consisted of 1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline, 1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole, 4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole, 3,3'-(1H-imidazole-4,5-diyl)dipyridine moieties and AIE-active tetraphenylethene units, respectively. The results illustrated that TM-1-4 exhibited clear AIE characteristics. Meanwhile, TM-2 and TM-3 show excellent solid emission properties (Φ_TM-2 =13.73 % and Φ_TM-3 =36.21 %), whereas TM-1 and TM-4 exhibit the opposite properties (Φ_TM-1 =1.48 % and Φ_TM-4 =4.83 %). The multiple rotors (pyridine and benzene ring) causes twisted conformations of the molecule that prevents π-π stacking and enhances solid emission(ΦTM-2<ΦTM-3, ΦTM-1<ΦTM-4). Significantly, TM-2 and TM-3 also exhibited reversible mechanochromic behavior (Emission red shifts: Δλ_TM-2 =43 nm and Δλ_TM-3 =41 nm) with color changes between blue and green emissions. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) suggested the disordered state of ground sample could be readily returned to an ordered crystalline. Therefore, the mechanochromisms of TM-2 and TM-3 are ascribable to the phase transformation between crystal and amorphous structure. The single crystal X-ray analysis of TM-2 reveals a twisted conformation for TPE moiety and the absence of π-π intermolecular stacking. These excellent optical properties of TM-2 and TM-3 make them potentially applications in mechanochromic materials and imaging agents.

A bis-pyrene chalcone based fluorescent material for ratiometric sensing of hydrazine: An acid/base molecular switch and solid-state emitter

In this work, we have designed and synthesized a new fluorescent molecular probe, DPY comprising of pyrene-diacetylpyridine conjugate, which was found to be sensitive to hydrazine as well as protonation. DPY is characterised by a strong emission both in solution (λ_em = 530 nm) as well as in solid state (λ_em = 610 nm), attributed to intramolecular charge-transfer. The probe responds to hydrazine with a ratiometric fluorescence emission change from yellow to blue, due to chalcone cyclisation reaction of α, β-unsaturated carbonyl group resulting in the pyrazoline compound, DPY-Hy, imparting a strong greenish-blue emission in solution. Further, the strong fluorescence emission of DPY in powder and thin film was quenched upon exposure to TFA, and revived upon exposure to TEA. For developing on-site detection protocol, when DPY was drop-casted on nonfluorescent silica plate a vivid naked-eye colour change from orange-red to dark blue was realized. Interestingly, in the aggregated state, DPY exhibited a broad range emission from green to orange in a mixed solvent system of THF:H₂O. A plausible explanation of the photophysical events is substantiated with theoretical calculations.

Stimuli-Responsive AIEgens

The unique advantages and the exciting application prospects of AIEgens have triggered booming developments in this area in recent years. Among them, stimuli-responsive AIEgens have received particular attention and impressive progress, and they have been demonstrated to show tremendous potential in many fields from physical chemistry to materials science and to biology and medicine. Here, the recent achievements of stimuli-responsive AIEgens in terms of seven most representative types of stimuli including force, light, polarity, temperature, electricity, ion, and pH, are summarized. Based on typical examples, it is illustrated how each type of systems realize the desired stimuli-responsive performance for various applications. The key work principles behind them are ultimately deciphered and figured out to offer new insights and guidelines for the design and engineering of the next-generation stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for more broad applications.

Bridged Aromatic Oxo- and Thioethers with Intense Emission in Solution and the Solid State

In this contribution, we report on a class of emitters based on bridged oxo- and/or thioethers revealing striking photoluminescence properties in fluid solution and in the solid state. In total, nine compounds were investigated concerning their photophysical properties, which were interpreted by quantum chemical calculations. To our delight, we discovered compounds possessing nearly identical photoluminescence quantum yields (Φ_F ) in solution and in the solid state, which has been rarely reported so far. Besides these efforts, we shed light on the influence of polymorphism and solvent polarity on the emission properties. In addition, an in-depth X-ray diffractometric analysis was conducted to correlate molecular packing in the crystal with differences in the photophysical properties.

Anthracene-based fluorescent probe: Synthesis, characterization, aggregation-induced emission, mechanochromism, and sensing of nitroaromatics in aqueous media

The sensitive and selective detection of nitroexplosive molecules thorough a simple methodology has received a significant field of research affecting global security and public safety. In the present study, the synthesis of anthracene-based chalcone (S1) was conducted using a simple condensation method. S1 was found to exhibit unique properties, such as aggregation-induced emission in solution and mechanochromic behavior in solid state. A fluorescent aggregate was applied to sense electron-deficient picric acid (PA) and 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) in an aqueous solution. Notably, the developed test strip-based sensor (S1) could be used to effectively detect PA and 2,4-DNP, which were visualized by the naked eye. Photophysical analysis revealed the occurrence of an electron transfer from electron-rich S1 to the electron-deficient nitro compounds, which was confirmed using density functional theory and ¹H-nuclear magnetic resonance studies. In addition, the observed results confirmed the simple synthesis of S1 as a promising material for the development of test strip-based sensor devices for the detection of toxic and explosive aromatic nitro molecules.

All in One: Stimuli-Responsive, Efficient Mitotracking, and Single Source White Light Emission

"All in one" type luminogens, possessing combined properties related to optical, materials, and biological implications, are of urgent demand today, mainly because of the combined application potential of such probes. To the best of our knowledge, until now, an "all in one" type white light emitter together with stimuli-responsive behavior and highly efficient mitochondrial-tracking ability has not been reported yet. In this contribution, for the first time, we have investigated a pair of luminogens exhibiting white light emission (CIE coordinates: 0.35, 0.35 (DPAEOA) and 0.29, 0.33 (DPAPMI)) with temperature-induced mechanochromic features of a centrosymmetrically packed probe (space group P-1). Most importantly, despite being neutral, our designed probe DPAEOA can specifically illuminate mitochondria with the highest Pearson coefficient value (0.93), which is rare, as almost all the commercially developed mitotrackers are cationic fluorophores. Thus, this study will pave a new avenue for the design of next generation "all in one" type organic luminogens exhibiting potential applications in notable optical, materials, and biological fields.

Mechanochromism and Aggregation-Induced Emission in Phenanthroimidazole Derivatives: Role of Positional Change of Different Donors in a Multichromophoric Assembly

Organic materials possessing solid-state emission responsive to external stimuli have significance in a variety of material, biomedical, and optoelectronic applications. Organic molecules having different donor-acceptor architectures integrated with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorophores have been utilized in development of mechanofluorochromic (MFC) materials. In this work, we have designed and synthesized phenanthroimidazole (PI) based derivatives TPE-PI-1, TPE-PI-2, TPE-PI-3, PTZ-PI-1, PTZ-PI-2, and PTZ-PI-3 where in donors tetraphenylethylene-TPE (D) and phenothiazine-PTZ (D') of contrasting donor abilities are attached to the N and C atom positions of PI. The position and mode of attachment of the donors have been changed, and an additional PTZ spacer has been introduced which has a direct consequence on their photophysical and electronic properties. The PI derivatives manifest AIE, solvatochromic, and mechanochromic behavior. The single crystal X-ray analysis of TPE-PI-1 and PTZ-PI-2 reveals bent structures for the PTZ unit and a twisted conformation for TPE moieties. The density functional theory calculations were used to obtain optimized ground-state structures of the PI derivatives. The work shows a comprehensive comparison of the photophysical, electronic, AIE, and MFC properties of the PI derivatives as an effect of variations in the position of donor, donor-acceptor strength, and change in molecular conformation on use of spacer.

Mechanofluorochromic Anthryl Phosphonate/Benzoic Acid Cocrystals with a Large Blue Shift: The Role of P=O⋅⋅⋅H Interactions

Organophosphonates have a rich and diverse chemistry, but their mechanofluorochromic features have rarely been documented. Herein, we report on cocrystals of anthranylphosphonate with (E)-4-(2-(anthracen-9-yl)vinyl)benzoic acid that exhibit reversible mechanofluorochromic properties with large blue shifts. Anisotropic grinding (or pressure of just 25 kPa) maintains the co-crystals emission features but leads to a pronounced 59 nm (2087 cm^-1 ) blue-shift. Such an impressive blue-shift for a cocrystal has not been reported to date. The underlying causes for the blue-shift were validated by X-ray diffraction (powder and single crystal) studies and Hirshfeld surface analysis. Twisted molecular conformations and P=O⋅⋅⋅ H/C=O⋅⋅⋅H/C⋅⋅⋅H noncovalent interactions afford molecular arrangements via slip-stacks with two different pitch angles and relatively larger interlayer distances. The new compound was established as a potential medium for optical recording and security display.

Untangling the Mechanochromic Properties of Benzothiadiazole-Based Luminescent Polymorphs through Supramolecular Organic Framework Topology

Two new luminophore polymorphs of 4-bromo-7-(4-nonylphenyl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (1α and 1β) exhibiting different color emissions, which switch into each other in response to shear force and solvent vapors, are presented and their X-ray structure is determined. Supramolecular organic framework topology (SOFT) studies on the two polymorphic structures led us to conclude that the mechanochromic phase transformation can be explained on the basis of modifications in their respective topological nets: mab and pcu for 1α and 1β, respectively, as a result of the breaking and restoration of a number of weak supramolecular interactions. The color changes accompanying this transformation have been rationalized with the help of time-dependent density functional theory. We firmly believe that our findings will inspire future research on the design of novel stimuli-responsive organic materials with switchable properties based on their supramolecular interactions by establishing clear SOFT-property relationships.

Sensing and modulation of amyloid fibrils by photo-switchable organic dots

Abnormal aggregation of amyloidogenic proteins (like Aβ 42, amylin, α-synuclein, insulin) and the deposition of these aggregates is believed to be associated with several diseases known as amyloidosis. The pathway of aggregation involves three distinct phases: the oligomeric, elongation and plateau phases. Among them, the oligomeric phase of Aβ 42 and α-synuclein involves the generation of transient oligomeric species suspected to cause several neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Over the past few years, scientists have devoted much more effort to devising new fluorescent molecular probes to estimate the mechanisms of formation, and have gained vital information about possible therapeutic routes for amyloidosis. However, such fluorescent probes face serious limitations because of self-quenching at high concentrations of the probe; therefore, they are inappropriate for quantitative analysis and bio-imaging experiments. Hence, smart biocompatible fluorescent probes are indispensable, as they not only overcome the drawbacks of conventional fluorescent probes, but also have the potential ability to fight amyloidosis through modulation of the pathways involved. In this work, for the first time we introduce a series of promising photo-switchable aggregation-induced emission (AIE) dots (DPAPMI, CPMI) and aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) dots (DMAPMI) which can detect amyloid fibrils in terms of switching and enhancing their fluorescence emission. Interestingly, the organic dots enhance the aggregation rate of insulin by speeding up the microscopic processes, specifically secondary nucleation (with rate constant k2) and the elongation process (with rate constant k+). Moreover, the comparison of kinetics studies with ThT suggests that our organic dots can sense pre-fibrillar aggregates of insulin during the aggregation process, which may be beneficial for the early detection of amyloid fibrils. In summary, our study indicates that these organic dots can be used for the imaging and early stage detection of amyloid fibril formation and the modulation of amyloid formation pathways.

Precise Molecular Design for High-Performance Luminogens with Aggregation-Induced Emission

Precise design of fluorescent molecules with desired properties has enabled the rapid development of many research fields. Among the different types of optically active materials, luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) have attracted significant interest over the past two decades. The negligible luminescence of AIEgens as a molecular species and high brightness in aggregate states distinguish them from conventional fluorescent dyes, which has galvanized efforts to bring AIEgens to a wide array of multidisciplinary applications. Herein, the useful principles and emerging structure-property relationships for precise molecular design toward AIEgens with desirable properties using concrete examples are revealed. The cutting-edge applications of AIEgens and their excellent performance in enabling new research directions in biomedical theranostics, optoelectronic devices, stimuli-responsive smart materials, and visualization of physical processes are also highlighted.

Tuning Emission Wavelength of Polymorphous Crystal via Controllable Alkyl Chain Stacking and Its Vapor- and Thermo-Responsive Fluorescence

Tuning fluorescence colour of solid-state materials has become a topic of increasing interest for both fundamental mechanism study and practical applications such as sensors, optical recording and security printing. In this work, a fluorescent colour tuneable molecule BA-C16 is rationally designed and facilely synthesized by attaching flexible long alkyl chains to 2-hydroxybenzophenone azine (BA), which shows both aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) characteristics. Compared to BA, the simple introduction of long alkyl chains in BA-C16 leads to an emission wavelength redshift from 542 to 558 nm. This strategy of extending emission wavelength is rarely reported, and is ascribed to the enlarged through-space π-conjugation between interplanar molecules in the aggregate of BA-C16. Three crystals of BA-C16 are obtained with green, yellowish green and yellow emission. According to characterization by X-ray crystallography, X-ray powder diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry, alkyl chains play an important role in inducing different stacking modes of the three crystals, which further leads to polymorph-dependent fluorescence colour. BA-C16 exhibits tuneable solid-state fluorescence upon vapor fumigation, or annealing based on a transition between a "near-monomer" crystalline state and a "dimer" crystalline state. BA-C16 is further applied for rewritable fluorescence printing tuned by vapor- and thermal-treatment.

Novel V- and Y-Shaped Light-Emitting Liquid Crystals with Pentafluorinated Bistolane-Based Luminophores

Herein, we describe the synthesis of novel light-emitting liquid-crystalline (LC) compounds bearing pentafluorinated bistolane-based luminophores with a V- or a Y-shaped molecular geometry and the evaluation of their LC and photophysical characteristics. The V- or Y-shaped compounds exhibited a unique LC phase and showed photoluminescence (PL) behavior under various circumstances, such as in dilute solution or in the solid state. Notably, PL characteristics were observed even under high-temperature conditions with a crystal (Cr) to LC phase transition, although the PL efficiency (Φ PL) was gradually reduced because of thermal molecular motion. Interestingly, Φ PL was found to be completely recovered through the LC → Cr phase transition during the cooling process; the PL characteristics of the V- or Y-shaped compounds were sensitively changed by external thermal stress, giving these compounds the ability to act as thermoresponsive PL sensing materials.

Self-healing gels triggered by ultrasound with color-tunable emission based on ion recognition

Herein, O-substituted terpyridine motif was used as both rigid fluorescent π core and ion binding site, in order to construct an novel amphiphilic organogelator TEC containing cholesterol unit. We demonstrated a ultrasound induced reversible sol-gel transition approach driven by adjusted non covalent interactions and the resulted gels showed self-healing properties and tunable emission color when incorporating inorganic ions into the gel matrices. By heating-cooling process, the gel transformed to sol again. Simultaneously, the vesicle-tube morphology transition controlled by sonication and heating-cooling was also observed, together with aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIE) property of the gel. The results suggested that ultrasound promoted the J aggregations of terpyridine motifs and enhanced the hydrogen bonding interactions of TEC molecules, leading to the gelation process.
