Chemical transformations at the nanoscale: nanocrystal-seeded synthesis of β-Cu2V2O7 with enhanced photoconversion efficiencies

Photoelectrochemical properties of copper pyrovanadate (Cu2V2O7) thin films synthesized by pulsed laser deposition

Polymorphic phases of copper pyrovanadate (α- and β-Cu₂V₂O₇) were synthesized by solid state reaction and the mechanisms governing the phase transitions have been highlighted by the ThermoGravimetric Analysis (TGA) and the Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The thermal evolution of the lattice parameters was determined by high temperature X-ray Diffraction revealing negative thermal expansion coefficients. The thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry was also used to determine the optimal conditions to obtain a dense target in order to produce thin films by the Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique. Thin films elaborated under different oxygen pressures and temperatures exhibit a β-Cu₂V₂O₇ polycrystalline phase and their band gap indicates absorption in the visible range. These oxides can be used as photoanodes and their photoelectrochemical properties were studied for both bulk (α-Cu₂V₂O₇) and thin films (β-Cu₂V₂O₇), as a function of the wavelength and/or intensity of the luminous flux. The best photocurrent efficiency was obtained under 450 nm illumination. Moreover, in the case of thin films, we have observed a linear evolution of the current density with the luminous flux. Finally, the photostability of thin films was measured and shows a reduction in the photocurrent of 8% after 1 h of measurement. This photocorrosion phenomenon was also highlighted by the elemental mapping performed on thin films by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS).

Manipulating Copper Dispersion on Ceria for Enhanced Catalysis: A Nanocrystal-Based Atom-Trapping Strategy

Due to tunable redox properties and cost-effectiveness, copper-ceria (Cu-CeO2 ) materials have been investigated for a wide scope of catalytic reactions. However, accurately identifying and rationally tuning the local structures in Cu-CeO2 have remained challenging, especially for nanomaterials with inherent structural complexities involving surfaces, interfaces, and defects. Here, a nanocrystal-based atom-trapping strategy to access atomically precise Cu-CeO2 nanostructures for enhanced catalysis is reported. Driven by the interfacial interactions between the presynthesized Cu and CeO2 nanocrystals, Cu atoms migrate and redisperse onto the CeO2 surface via a solid-solid route. This interfacial restructuring behavior facilitates tuning of the copper dispersion and the associated creation of surface oxygen defects on CeO2 , which gives rise to enhanced activities and stabilities catalyzing water-gas shift reaction. Combining soft and solid-state chemistry of colloidal nanocrystals provide a well-defined platform to understand, elucidate, and harness metal-support interactions. The dynamic behavior of the supported metal species can be further exploited to realize exquisite control and rational design of multicomponent nanocatalysts.

Crystal-Phase Control of Ternary Metal Oxides by Solid-State Synthesis with Nanocrystals

Ternary metal oxides are materials of interest for many applications, from batteries to catalysis. Their crystalline structure and composition determine their properties, and thus it is important to achieve control over these features. Here, we demonstrate that solid-state chemistry among nanocrystalline precursors is a promising approach for their synthesis. We show that the crystalline phase of nanocrystal precursors direct that of the ternary reaction product. The combination of X-ray and electron microscopy techniques reveals that the spinel and rhombohedral phases of copper iron oxide are obtained by reacting copper nanocrystals with spinel γ-Fe₂O₃ and corundum α-Fe₂O₃ nanocrystals, respectively. Considering the available library of nanocrystals with tunable crystal phases, this discovery opens up an alternative pathway toward the synthesis of a wide variety of ternary and quaternary materials, including those with metastable phases.

Facile synthesis of single-crystalline Fe-doped copper vanadate nanoparticles for the voltammetric monitoring of lethal hazardous fungicide carbendazim

The highly selective and sensitive electrochemical detection of highly toxic fungicide carbendazim (CBZ) by the iron (Fe)-doped copper vanadate (CuVO₄; CuV) is discussed. The Fe-doped copper vanadate (Fe-CuV) is prepared by the simple co-precipitation method followed by an annealing process which produced high crystallinity. The material properties of Fe-CuV are characterized by XRD, Raman spectrometry, XPS analysis, HRTEM, and SAED pattern. The electrochemical characterization of Fe-CuV towards CBZ detection are done by CV and DPV techniques. The Fe-CuV/GCE exhibits good electroanalytical activity towards the electro-oxidation of CBZ at the potential of 0.81 V vs Ag/AgCl. The developed sensor electrode revealed a linear range of 0.01 to 83.1 μM and a limit of detection of about 5 nM. In addition, Fe-CuV/GCE reveals good storage stability (RSD = 2.63%) and reproducibility (RSD = 2.85%) for the electro-oxidation of CBZ. The electrode material was applied to the detection of CBZ in apple juice and soy milk samples, and the results were discussed. Thus, our projected Fe-CuV/GCE can be employed as electrode material in a rapid onsite sensor for the detection and determination of noxious pollutants.

Colloidal Nanocrystals as Precursors and Intermediates in Solid State Reactions for Multinary Oxide Nanomaterials

ConspectusPolyelemental compounds with dimensions in the nanosized regime are desirable in a large variety of applications, yet their synthesis remains a general challenge in chemistry. One of the major bottlenecks to obtaining multinary systems is the complexity of the synthesis itself. As the number of elements to include in one single nano-object increases, different chemical interactions arise during nucleation and growth, thus challenging the formation of the targeted product. Choosing the reaction conditions and identifying the parameters which ensure the desired reaction pathway are of the uttermost importance. When, in addition to composition, the simultaneous control of size and shape is sought after, the development of new synthetic strategies guided by the fundamental understanding of the formation mechanisms becomes crucial.In this Account we discuss the use of colloidal chemistry to target multinary oxide nanomaterials, with focus on light absorbers which can drive chemical reactions. We propose the combination of soft and solid-state chemistries as one successful strategy to target this family of polyelemental compounds with control on composition and morphological features. To start with, we highlight studies where in situ forming nanoparticles act as reaction intermediates, which we found in both oxide (i.e., Bi-V-O) and sulfide (Cu-M-S, with M = V, Cr, Mn) nanocrystals (NCs). Examples of ternary sulfides are mentioned only with the purpose of showing that similar mechanisms can apply to different families of multinary nanomaterials. Using this new knowledge, we demonstrate that reacting pre-synthesized NCs with well-defined composition and size with molecular precursors allows significant control of these same property-dictating features (i.e., composition and grain size) in the resulting ternary and quaternary compounds. For example, nanostructured BiV_1-xSb_xO₄ thin films with tunable composition and nanostructured β-Cu₂V₂O₇ with tunable grain size were accessed from colloidally synthesized Bi_1-xSb_x NCs (0 < x < 1) and size-controlled Cu NCs reacted with a vanadium molecular precursor, respectively. The analysis of reaction aliquots revealed that the formation of these materials occurs via a solid-state reaction between the NC precursors and V-containing amorphous nanoparticles, which form in situ from the molecular precursors. With the aim to achieve better control on the reaction product, we finally propose the use of colloidally synthesized NCs as reactants in solid state reactions. As the first proof of concept, ternary metal oxide NCs, including CuFe₂O₄, CuMn₂O₄, and CuGa₂O₄ with defined size and shape regulated by the NC precursors were obtained. Considering the huge library of single component and binary NCs accessible by colloidal chemistry, the extension of this synthetic concept, which combines soft and solid-state chemistries, to a larger variety of polyelemental nanomaterials is foreseen. Such an approach will contribute to facilitate a more rapid translation of design principles to materials with the desired composition and structural features.

Shaping non-noble metal nanocrystals via colloidal chemistry

Non-noble metal nanocrystals with well-defined shapes have been attracting increasingly more attention in the last decade as potential alternatives to noble metals, by virtue of their earth abundance combined with intriguing physical and chemical properties relevant for both fundamental studies and technological applications. Nevertheless, their synthesis is still primitive when compared to noble metals. In this contribution, we focus on third row transition metals Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu that are recently gaining interest because of their catalytic properties. Along with providing an overview on the state-of-the-art, we discuss current synthetic strategies and challenges. Finally, we propose future directions to advance the synthetic development of shape-controlled non-noble metal nanocrystals in the upcoming years.

Insights into Reaction Intermediates to Predict Synthetic Pathways for Shape-Controlled Metal Nanocrystals

Understanding nucleation phenomena is crucial across all branches of physical and natural sciences. Colloidal nanocrystals are among the most versatile and tunable synthetic nanomaterials. While huge steps have been made in their synthetic development, synthesis by design is still impeded by the lack of knowledge of reaction mechanisms. Here, we report on the investigation of the reaction intermediates in high temperature syntheses of copper nanocrystals by a variety of techniques, including X-ray absorption at a synchrotron source using a customized in situ cell. We reveal unique insights into the chemical nature of the reaction intermediates and into their role in determining the final shape of the metal nanocrystals. Overall, this study highlights the importance of understanding the chemistry behind nucleation as a key parameter to predict synthetic pathways for shape-controlled nanocrystals.

Sizable Excitonic Effects Undermining the Photocatalytic Efficiency of β-Cu2V2O7

Copper vanadates have been proposed as promising photoanodes for water-splitting photoelectrochemical cells, but their performance has recently been shown to be severely limited. To understand this behavior, we study the electronic structure and the optical properties of β-Cu₂V₂O₇ both experimentally and computationally. The measured absorption spectrum shows an absorption peak at 1.5 eV followed by the onset of an apparent continuum at 2.26 eV, as generally found for this class of materials. We perform calculations within the framework of the QS GW̃ method and the Bethe-Salpeter equation while including effects of magnetic ordering, nuclear quantum motion, and thermal vibrations. We demonstrate the occurrence of two kinds of excitons with high binding energies upon optical excitation in β-Cu₂V₂O₇, which account for the first absorption peak and the lower edge of the apparent continuum. The results are confirmed by photoluminescence measurements, where sub-band-gap emissions are found for both excitons. These results provide an explanation for the low photocatalytic efficiencies of copper vanadates, despite the favorable size of their optical band gaps.
