Finding intersections between electronic excited state potential energy surfaces with simultaneous ultrafast X-ray scattering and spectroscopy

A Tetracarbene Iron(II) Complex with a Long-lived Triplet Metal-to-Ligand Charge Transfer State due to a Triplet-Triplet Barrier

Mixed N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) / pyridyl iron(II) complexes have attracted a great deal of attention recently because of their potential as photocatalysts and light sensitizers made from Earth-abundant elements. The most decisive challenge for their successful implementation is the lifetime of the lowest triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer state (3MLCT), which typically decays via a triplet metal-centered (3MC) state back to the ground state. We reveal by variable-temperature ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy that the tripodal iron(II) bis(pyridine) complex isomers trans- and cis-[Fe(pdmi)2]2+ with four NHC donors show 3MLCT→3MC population transfers with very different barriers and rationalize this by computational means. While trans-[Fe(pdmi)2]2+ possesses an unobservable activation barrier, the cis isomer exhibits a barrier of 492 cm-1, which leads to a nanosecond 3MLCT lifetime at 77 K. The kinetic and quantum chemical data were analyzed in the context of semi-classical Marcus theory revealing a high reorganization energy and small electronic coupling between the two triplet states. This highlights the importance of detailed structural control and kinetic knowledge for the rational design of photosensitizers from first row transition metals such as iron.

Control of Iron(II)-Tris(2,2'-Bipyridine) Light-Induced Excited-State Trapping via External Electromagnetic Fields

Light-induced excited spin-state trapping reactions in iron pyridinic complexes allow the iron's low-to-high spin transition in a sub-picosecond timescale. Employing a recently developed model for [Fe(2,2'-bipyridine)3]2+ photochemical spin-crossover reaction in conjunction with quantum wavepacket dynamics, we explore the possibility of controlling the reaction through external electromagnetic fields, aiming at stabilizing the initial metal-to-ligand charge transfer states. We show that simple Gaussian-shaped electromagnetic fields have a minor effect on the population kinetics. However, introducing vibrationally excited initial wavepacket representations allows for maintaining the population trapped in the metal-to-ligand charge transfer states. Using optimal control theory, we propose an electromagnetic field shape that increases the lifetime of metal-to-ligand charge transfer states. These results open the route for controlling the iron photochemistry through the action of external electric fields.

High-Spin State of a Ferrocene Electron Donor Revealed by Optical and X-ray Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

Ferrocene is one of the most common electron donors, and mapping its ligand-field excited states is critical to designing donor-acceptor (D-A) molecules with long-lived charge transfer states. Although 3(d-d) states are commonly invoked in the photophysics of ferrocene complexes, mention of the high-spin 5(d-d) state is scarce. Here, we provide clear evidence of 5(d-d) formation in a bimetallic D-A molecule, ferrocenyl cobaltocenium hexafluorophosphate ([FcCc]PF6). Femtosecond optical transient absorption (OTA) spectroscopy reveals two distinct electronic excited states with 30 and 500 ps lifetimes. Using a combination of ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared probe pulses, we capture the spectral features of these states over an ultrabroadband range spanning 320 to 2200 nm. Time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the lowest triplet and quintet states, both primarily Fe(II) (d-d) in character, qualitatively agree with the experimental OTA spectra, allowing us to assign the 30 ps state as the 3(d-d) state and the 500 ps state as the high-spin 5(d-d) state. To confirm the ferrocene-centered high-spin character of the 500 ps state, we performed X-ray transient absorption (XTA) spectroscopy at the Fe and Co K edges. The Fe K-edge XTA spectrum at 150 ps shows a red shift of the absorption edge that is consistent with an Fe(II) high-spin state, as supported by ab initio calculations. The transient signal detected at the Co K-edge is 50× weaker, confirming the ferrocene-centered character of the excited state. Fitting of the transient extended X-ray absorption fine structure region yields an Fe-C bond length increase of 0.25 ± 0.1 Å in the excited state, as expected for the high-spin state based on DFT. Altogether, these results demonstrate that the high-spin state of ferrocene should be considered when designing donor-acceptor assemblies for photocatalysis and photovoltaics.

Ultrafast Two-Color X-Ray Emission Spectroscopy Reveals Excited State Landscape in a Base Metal Dyad

Effective photoinduced charge transfer makes molecular bimetallic assemblies attractive for applications as active light-induced proton reduction systems. Developing competitive base metal dyads is mandatory for a more sustainable future. However, the electron transfer mechanisms from the photosensitizer to the proton reduction catalyst in base metal dyads remain so far unexplored. A Fe─Co dyad that exhibits photocatalytic H2 production activity is studied using femtosecond X-ray emission spectroscopy, complemented by ultrafast optical spectroscopy and theoretical time-dependent DFT calculations, to understand the electronic and structural dynamics after photoexcitation and during the subsequent charge transfer process from the FeII photosensitizer to the cobaloxime catalyst. This novel approach enables the simultaneous measurement of the transient X-ray emission at the iron and cobalt K-edges in a two-color experiment. With this methodology, the excited state dynamics are correlated to the electron transfer processes, and evidence of the Fe→Co electron transfer as an initial step of proton reduction activity is unraveled.

Time-Resolved X-ray Emission Spectroscopy and Synthetic High-Spin Model Complexes Resolve Ambiguities in Excited-State Assignments of Transition-Metal Chromophores: A Case Study of Fe-Amido Complexes

To fully harness the potential of abundant metal coordination complex photosensitizers, a detailed understanding of the molecular properties that dictate and control the electronic excited-state population dynamics initiated by light absorption is critical. In the absence of detectable luminescence, optical transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy is the most widely employed method for interpreting electron redistribution in such excited states, particularly for those with a charge-transfer character. The assignment of excited-state TA spectral features often relies on spectroelectrochemical measurements, where the transient absorption spectrum generated by a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) electronic excited state, for instance, can be approximated using steady-state spectra generated by electrochemical ligand reduction and metal oxidation and accounting for the loss of absorptions by the electronic ground state. However, the reliability of this approach can be clouded when multiple electronic configurations have similar optical signatures. Using a case study of Fe(II) complexes supported by benzannulated diarylamido ligands, we highlight an example of such an ambiguity and show how time-resolved X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) measurements can reliably assign excited states from the perspective of the metal, particularly in conjunction with accurate synthetic models of ligand-field electronic excited states, leading to a reinterpretation of the long-lived excited state as a ligand-field metal-centered quintet state. A detailed analysis of the XES data on the long-lived excited state is presented, along with a discussion of the ultrafast dynamics following the photoexcitation of low-spin Fe(II)-Namido complexes using a high-spin ground-state analogue as a spectral model for the 5T2 excited state.

Observation of a Picosecond Light-Induced Spin Transition in Polymeric Nanorods

Spin transition (ST) materials are attractive for developing photoswitchable devices, but their slow material transformations limit device applications. Size reduction could enable faster switching, but the photoinduced dynamics at the nanoscale remains poorly understood. Here, we report a femtosecond optical pump multimodal X-ray probe study of polymeric nanorods. Simultaneously tracking the ST order parameter with X-ray emission spectroscopy and structure with X-ray diffraction, we observe photodoping of the low-spin-lattice within ∼150 fs. Above a ∼16% photodoping threshold, the transition to the high-spin phase occurs following an incubation period assigned to vibrational energy redistribution within the nanorods activating the molecular spin switching. Above ∼60% photodoping, the incubation period disappears, and the transition completes within ∼50 ps, preceded by the elastic nanorod expansion in response to the photodoping. These results support the feasibility of ST material-based GHz optical switching applications.

The Liquid Jet Endstation for Hard X-ray Scattering and Spectroscopy at the Linac Coherent Light Source

The ability to study chemical dynamics on ultrafast timescales has greatly advanced with the introduction of X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) providing short pulses of intense X-rays tailored to probe atomic structure and electronic configuration. Fully exploiting the full potential of XFELs requires specialized experimental endstations along with the development of techniques and methods to successfully carry out experiments. The liquid jet endstation (LJE) at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) has been developed to study photochemistry and biochemistry in solution systems using a combination of X-ray solution scattering (XSS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). The pump-probe setup utilizes an optical laser to excite the sample, which is subsequently probed by a hard X-ray pulse to resolve structural and electronic dynamics at their intrinsic femtosecond timescales. The LJE ensures reliable sample delivery to the X-ray interaction point via various liquid jets, enabling rapid replenishment of thin samples with millimolar concentrations and low sample volumes at the 120 Hz repetition rate of the LCLS beam. This paper provides a detailed description of the LJE design and of the techniques it enables, with an emphasis on the diagnostics required for real-time monitoring of the liquid jet and on the spatiotemporal overlap methods used to optimize the signal. Additionally, various scientific examples are discussed, highlighting the versatility of the LJE.

Deciphering Photoinduced Catalytic Reaction Mechanisms in Natural and Artificial Photosynthetic Systems on Multiple Temporal and Spatial Scales Using X-ray Probes

Utilization of renewable energies for catalytically generating value-added chemicals is highly desirable in this era of rising energy demands and climate change impacts. Artificial photosynthetic systems or photocatalysts utilize light to convert abundant CO2, H2O, and O2 to fuels, such as carbohydrates and hydrogen, thus converting light energy to storable chemical resources. The emergence of intense X-ray pulses from synchrotrons, ultrafast X-ray pulses from X-ray free electron lasers, and table-top laser-driven sources over the past decades opens new frontiers in deciphering photoinduced catalytic reaction mechanisms on the multiple temporal and spatial scales. Operando X-ray spectroscopic methods offer a new set of electronic transitions in probing the oxidation states, coordinating geometry, and spin states of the metal catalytic center and photosensitizers with unprecedented energy and time resolution. Operando X-ray scattering methods enable previously elusive reaction steps to be characterized on different length scales and time scales. The methodological progress and their application examples collected in this review will offer a glimpse into the accomplishments and current state in deciphering reaction mechanisms for both natural and synthetic systems. Looking forward, there are still many challenges and opportunities at the frontier of catalytic research that will require further advancement of the characterization techniques.

A comparative review of time-resolved x-ray and electron scattering to probe structural dynamics

The structure of molecules, particularly the dynamic changes in structure, plays an essential role in understanding physical and chemical phenomena. Time-resolved (TR) scattering techniques serve as crucial experimental tools for studying structural dynamics, offering direct sensitivity to molecular structures through scattering signals. Over the past decade, the advent of x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) and mega-electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction (MeV-UED) facilities has ushered TR scattering experiments into a new era, garnering significant attention. In this review, we delve into the basic principles of TR scattering experiments, especially focusing on those that employ x-rays and electrons. We highlight the variations in experimental conditions when employing x-rays vs electrons and discuss their complementarity. Additionally, cutting-edge XFELs and MeV-UED facilities for TR x-ray and electron scattering experiments and the experiments performed at those facilities are reviewed. As new facilities are constructed and existing ones undergo upgrades, the landscape for TR x-ray and electron scattering experiments is poised for further expansion. Through this review, we aim to facilitate the effective utilization of these emerging opportunities, assisting researchers in delving deeper into the intricate dynamics of molecular structures.

Correlating Valence and 2p3d RIXS Spectroscopies: A Ligand-Field Study of Spin-Crossover Iron(II)

The molecular spin-crossover phenomenon between high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states is a promising route to next-generation information storage, sensing applications, and molecular spintronics. Spin-crossover complexes also provide a unique opportunity to study the ligand field (LF) properties of a system in both HS and LS states while maintaining the same ligand environment. Presently, we employ complementing valence and core-level spectroscopic methods to probe the electronic excited-state manifolds of the spin-crossover complex [FeII(H2B(pz)2)2phen]0. Light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) at liquid He temperatures is exploited to characterize magnetic and spectroscopic properties of the photoinduced HS state using SQUID magnetometry and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. In parallel, Fe 2p3d RIXS spectroscopy is employed to examine the ΔS = 0, 1 excited LF states. These experimental studies are combined with state-of-the-art CASSCF/NEVPT2 and CASCI/NEVPT2 calculations characterizing the ground and LF excited states. Analysis of the acquired LF information further supports the notion that the spin-crossover of [FeII(H2B(pz)2)2phen]0 is asymmetric, evidenced by a decrease in eπ in the LS state. The results demonstrate the power of cross-correlating spectroscopic techniques with high and low LF information content to make accurate excited-state assignments, as well as the current capabilities of ab initio theory in interpreting these electronic properties.

Controlling the Photophysical Properties of a Series of Isostructural d6 Complexes Based on Cr0, MnI, and FeII

Development of first-row transition metal complexes with similar luminescence and photoredox properties as widely used RuII polypyridines is attractive because metals from the first transition series are comparatively abundant and inexpensive. The weaker ligand field experienced by the valence d-electrons of first-row transition metals challenges the installation of the same types of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states as in precious metal complexes, due to rapid population of energetically lower-lying metal-centered (MC) states. In a family of isostructural tris(diisocyanide) complexes of the 3d6 metals Cr0, MnI, and FeII, the increasing effective nuclear charge and ligand field strength allow us to control the energetic order between the 3MLCT and 3MC states, whereas pyrene decoration of the isocyanide ligand framework provides control over intraligand (ILPyr) states. The chromium(0) complex shows red 3MLCT phosphorescence because all other excited states are higher in energy. In the manganese(I) complex, a microsecond-lived dark 3ILPyr state, reminiscent of the types of electronic states encountered in many polyaromatic hydrocarbon compounds, is the lowest and becomes photoactive. In the iron(II) complex, the lowest MLCT state has shifted to so much higher energy that 1ILPyr fluorescence occurs, in parallel to other excited-state deactivation pathways. Our combined synthetic-spectroscopic-theoretical study provides unprecedented insights into how effective nuclear charge, ligand field strength, and ligand π-conjugation affect the energetic order between MLCT and ligand-based excited states, and under what circumstances these individual states become luminescent and exploitable in photochemistry. Such insights are the key to further developments of luminescent and photoredox-active first-row transition metal complexes.

Attosecond Probing of Nuclear Vibrations in the D2+ and HeH+ Molecular Ions

We study the ultrafast photodissociation of small diatomic molecules using attosecond laser pulses of moderate intensity in the (extreme) ultraviolet regime. The simultaneous application of subfemtosecond laser pulses with different photon energies─resonant in the region of the molecular motion─allows one to monitor the vibrational dynamics of simple diatomics, like the D2+ and HeH+ molecular ions. In our real-time wave packet simulations, the nuclear dynamics is initiated either by sudden ionization (D2+) or by explicit pump pulses (HeH+) via distortion of the potential energy of the molecule. The application of time-delayed attosecond pulses leads to the breakup of the molecules, and the information on the underlying bound-state dynamics is imprinted in the kinetic energy release (KER) spectra of the outgoing fragments. We show that the KER-delay spectrograms generated in our ultrafast pump-probe schemes are able to reconstruct the most important features of the molecular motion within a given electronic state, such as the time period or amplitude of oscillations, interference patterns, or the revival and splitting of the nuclear wave packet. The impact of probe pulse duration, which is key to the applicability of the presented mapping scheme, is investigated in detail.

Multifaceted Deactivation Dynamics of Fe(II) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Photosensitizers

Excited state dynamics of three iron(II) carbene complexes that serve as prototype Earth-abundant photosensitizers were investigated by ultrafast optical spectroscopy. Significant differences in the dynamics between the investigated complexes down to femtosecond time scales are used to characterize fundamental differences in the depopulation of triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (3MLCT) excited states in the presence of energetically accessible triplet metal-centered (3MC) states. Novel insights into the full deactivation cascades of the investigated complexes include evidence of the need to revise the deactivation model for a prominent iron carbene prototype complex, a refined understanding of complex 3MC dynamics, and a quantitative discrimination between activated and barrierless deactivation steps along the 3MLCT → 3MC → 1GS path. Overall, the study provides an improved understanding of photophysical limitations and opportunities for the use of iron(II)-based photosensitizers in photochemical applications.

Fantastical excited state optimized structures and where to find them

The quantum chemistry community has developed analytic forces for approximate electronic excited states to enable walking on excited state potential energy surfaces (PES). One can thereby computationally characterize excited state minima and saddle points. Always implicit in using this machinery is the fact that an excited state PES only exists within the realm of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, where the nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom separate. This work demonstrates through ab initio calculations and simple nonadiabatic dynamics that some excited state minimum structures are fantastical: they appear to exist as stable configurations only as a consequence of the PES construct, rather than being physically observable. Each fantastical structure exhibits an unphysically high predicted harmonic frequency and associated force constant. This fact can serve as a valuable diagnostic of when an optimized excited state structure is non-observable. The origin of this phenomenon can be attributed to the coupling between different electronic states. As PESs approach one another, the upper surface can form a minimum that is very close to a near-touching point. The force constant, evaluated at this minimum, relates to the strength of the electronic coupling rather than to any characteristic excited state vibration. Nonadiabatic dynamics results using a Landau-Zener model illustrate that fantastical excited state structures have extremely short lifetimes on the order of a few femtoseconds. Their appearance in a calculation signals the presence of a nearby conical intersection through which the system will rapidly cross to a lower surface.

Cerium Photocatalyst in Action: Structural Dynamics in the Presence of Substrate Visualized via Time-Resolved X-ray Liquidography

[Ce(III)Cl6]3-, with its earth-abundant metal element, is a promising photocatalyst facilitating carbon-halogen bond activation. Still, the structure of the reaction intermediate has yet to be explored. Here, we applied time-resolved X-ray liquidography (TRXL), which allows for direct observation of the structural details of reaction intermediates, to investigate the photocatalytic reaction of [Ce(III)Cl6]3-. Structural analysis of the TRXL data revealed that the excited state of [Ce(III)Cl6]3- has Ce-Cl bonds that are shorter than those of the ground state and that the Ce-Cl bond further contracts upon oxidation. In addition, this study represents the first application of TRXL to both photocatalyst-only and photocatalyst-and-substrate samples, providing insights into the substrate's influence on the photocatalyst's reaction dynamics. This study demonstrates the capability of TRXL in elucidating the reaction dynamics of photocatalysts under various conditions and highlights the importance of experimental determination of the structures of reaction intermediates to advance our understanding of photocatalytic mechanisms.

Ultrafast Spin Crossover Photochemical Mechanism in [FeII(2,2'-bipyridine)3]2+] Revealed by Quantum Dynamics

Photoexcitation of [FeII(2,2'-bipyridine)3]2+ induces a subpicosecond spin crossover transformation from a low-spin singlet to a high-spin quintet state. The mechanism involves metal-centered (MC) and metal-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) triplet intermediates, but their individual contributions to this efficient intersystem crossing have been object of debate. Employing quantum wavepacket dynamics, we show that MC triplets are catalyzing the transfer to the high-spin state. This photochemical pathway is made possible thanks to bipyridine stretching vibrations, facilitating the conversion between the MLCT bands to such MC triplets. We show that the lifetime of the MLCT states can be increased to tens of picoseconds by breaking the conjugation between pyridine units, which increases the energetic gap between MLCT and MC states. This opens the route for the design of new chelating ligands inducing long-lived MLCT states in iron complexes.

Eliminating finite-size effects on the calculation of x-ray scattering from molecular dynamics simulations

Structural studies using x-ray scattering methods for investigating molecules in solution are shifting focus toward describing the role and effects of the surrounding solvent. However, forward models based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to simulate structure factors and x-ray scattering from interatomic distributions such as radial distribution functions (RDFs) face limitations imposed by simulations, particularly at low values of the scattering vector q. In this work, we show how the value of the structure factor at q = 0 calculated from RDFs sampled from finite MD simulations is effectively dependent on the size of the simulation cell. To eliminate this error, we derive a new scheme to renormalize the sampled RDFs based on a model of the excluded volume of the particle-pairs they were sampled from, to emulate sampling from an infinite system. We compare this new correction method to two previous RDF-correction methods, developed for Kirkwood-Buff theory applications. We present a quantitative test to assess the reliability of the simulated low-q scattering signal and show that our RDF-correction successfully recovers the correct q = 0 limit for neat water. We investigate the effect of MD-sampling time on the RDF-corrections, before advancing to a molecular example system, comprised of a transition metal complex solvated in a series of water cells with varying densities. We show that our correction recovers the correct q = 0 behavior for all densities. Furthermore, we employ a simple continuum scattering model to dissect the total scattering signal from the solvent-solvent structural correlations in a solute-solvent model system to find two distinct contributions: a non-local density-contribution from the finite, fixed cell size in NVT simulations, and a local contribution from the solvent shell. We show how the second contribution can be approximated without also including the finite-size contribution. Finally, we provide a "best-practices"-checklist for experimentalists planning to incorporate explicit solvation MD simulations in future work, offering guidance for improving the accuracy and reliability of structural studies using x-ray scattering methods in solution.

Solution phase high repetition rate laser pump x-ray probe picosecond hard x-ray spectroscopy at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource

We present a dedicated end-station for solution phase high repetition rate (MHz) picosecond hard x-ray spectroscopy at beamline 15-2 of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource. A high-power ultrafast ytterbium-doped fiber laser is used to photoexcite the samples at a repetition rate of 640 kHz, while the data acquisition operates at the 1.28 MHz repetition rate of the storage ring recording data in an alternating on-off mode. The time-resolved x-ray measurements are enabled via gating the x-ray detectors with the 20 mA/70 ps camshaft bunch of SPEAR3, a mode available during the routine operations of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource. As a benchmark study, aiming to demonstrate the advantageous capabilities of this end-station, we have conducted picosecond Fe K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy on aqueous [FeII(phen)3]2+, a prototypical spin crossover complex that undergoes light-induced excited spin state trapping forming an electronic excited state with a 0.6-0.7 ns lifetime. In addition, we report transient Fe Kβ main line and valence-to-core x-ray emission spectra, showing a unique detection sensitivity and an excellent agreement with model spectra and density functional theory calculations, respectively. Notably, the achieved signal-to-noise ratio, the overall performance, and the routine availability of the developed end-station have enabled a systematic time-resolved science program using the monochromatic beam at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource.

X-FAST: A versatile, high-throughput, and user-friendly XUV femtosecond absorption spectroscopy tabletop instrument

We present the X-FAST (XUV Femtosecond Absorption Spectroscopy Tabletop) instrument at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The instrument produces femtosecond extreme ultraviolet photon pulses via high-harmonic generation in the range of 40-72 eV, as well as optical pump pulses for transient-absorption experiments. The system implements a gas-cooled sample cell that enables studying the dynamics of thermally sensitive thin-film samples. This paper provides potential users with specifications of the optical, vacuum, data acquisition, and sample cooling systems of the X-FAST instrument, along with performance metrics and data of an ultrafast laser-induced phase transition in a Ni2MnGa Heusler thin film.

Ultrafast Electronic Relaxation in Aqueous [Fe(bpy)3]2+: A Surface Hopping Study

Trajectory surface hopping simulations are performed to better understand the electronic relaxation dynamics of [Fe(bpy)₃]²⁺ in aqueous solution. Specifically, the ultrafast relaxation from the photoexcited singlet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) to the metastable quintet metal-centered (MC) states is simulated through the surface hopping method, where the MLCT and MC states of [Fe(bpy)₃]²⁺ in aqueous solution are computed by using a model electronic Hamiltonian developed previously. As a result, most of the trajectories are interpreted to show the sequential relaxation pathways via the triplet MC states, though some are the direct pathway from MLCT to the quintet MC states. Even though the triplet MC states are involved in the relaxation, the population transfer to the singlet MC ground state is very small, and the population of the quintet MC states reaches more than ∼96%, reasonably consistent with the unity quantum efficiency discussed experimentally.

Solvent-Dependent Structural Dynamics in the Ultrafast Photodissociation Reaction of Triiodide Observed with Time-Resolved X-ray Solution Scattering

Resolving the structural dynamics of bond breaking, bond formation, and solvation is required for a deeper understanding of solution-phase chemical reactions. In this work, we investigate the photodissociation of triiodide in four solvents using femtosecond time-resolved X-ray solution scattering following 400 nm photoexcitation. Structural analysis of the scattering data resolves the solvent-dependent structural evolution during the bond cleavage, internal rearrangements, solvent-cage escape, and bond reformation in real time. The nature and structure of the reaction intermediates during the recombination are determined, elucidating the full mechanism of photodissociation and recombination on ultrafast time scales. We resolve the structure of the precursor state for recombination as a geminate pair. Further, we determine the size of the solvent cages from the refined structures of the radical pair. The observed structural dynamics present a comprehensive picture of the solvent influence on structure and dynamics of dissociation reactions.

Ferricyanide photo-aquation pathway revealed by combined femtosecond Kβ main line and valence-to-core x-ray emission spectroscopy

Reliably identifying short-lived chemical reaction intermediates is crucial to elucidate reaction mechanisms but becomes particularly challenging when multiple transient species occur simultaneously. Here, we report a femtosecond x-ray emission spectroscopy and scattering study of the aqueous ferricyanide photochemistry, utilizing the combined Fe Kβ main and valence-to-core emission lines. Following UV-excitation, we observe a ligand-to-metal charge transfer excited state that decays within 0.5 ps. On this timescale, we also detect a hitherto unobserved short-lived species that we assign to a ferric penta-coordinate intermediate of the photo-aquation reaction. We provide evidence that bond photolysis occurs from reactive metal-centered excited states that are populated through relaxation of the charge transfer excited state. Beyond illuminating the elusive ferricyanide photochemistry, these results show how current limitations of Kβ main line analysis in assigning ultrafast reaction intermediates can be circumvented by simultaneously using the valence-to-core spectral range.

Nanosecond Metal-to-Ligand Charge-Transfer State in an Fe(II) Chromophore: Lifetime Enhancement via Nested Potentials

Examples of Fe complexes with long-lived (≥1 ns) charge-transfer states are limited to pseudo-octahedral geometries with strong σ-donor chelates. Alternative strategies based on varying both coordination motifs and ligand donicity are highly desirable. Reported herein is an air-stable, tetragonal Fe^II complex, Fe(HMTI)(CN)₂ (HMTI = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-1,3,8,10-tetraene), with a 1.25 ns metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) lifetime. The structure has been determined, and the photophysical properties have been examined in a variety of solvents. The HMTI ligand is highly π-acidic due to low-lying π*(C═N), which enhances Δ_Fe via stabilizing t_2g orbitals. The inflexible geometry of the macrocycle results in short Fe-N bonds, and density functional theory calculations show that this rigidity results in an unusual set of nested potential energy surfaces. Moreover, the lifetime and energy of the MLCT state depends strongly on the solvent environment. This dependence is caused by modulation of the axial ligand-field strength by Lewis acid-base interactions between the solvent and the cyano ligands. This work represents the first example of a long-lived charge transfer state in an Fe^II macrocyclic species.

Atomic-scale observation of solvent reorganization influencing photoinduced structural dynamics in a copper complex photosensitizer

Photochemical reactions in solution are governed by a complex interplay between transient intramolecular electronic and nuclear structural changes and accompanying solvent rearrangements. State-of-the-art time-resolved X-ray solution scattering has emerged in the last decade as a powerful technique to observe solute and solvent motions in real time. However, disentangling solute and solvent dynamics and how they mutually influence each other remains challenging. Here, we simultaneously measure femtosecond X-ray emission and scattering to track both the intramolecular and solvation structural dynamics following photoexcitation of a solvated copper photosensitizer. Quantitative analysis assisted by molecular dynamics simulations reveals a two-step ligand flattening strongly coupled to the solvent reorganization, which conventional optical methods could not discern. First, a ballistic flattening triggers coherent motions of surrounding acetonitrile molecules. In turn, the approach of acetonitrile molecules to the copper atom mediates the decay of intramolecular coherent vibrations and induces a further ligand flattening. These direct structural insights reveal that photoinduced solute and solvent motions can be intimately intertwined, explaining how the key initial steps of light harvesting are affected by the solvent on the atomic time and length scale. Ultimately, this work takes a step forward in understanding the microscopic mechanisms of the bidirectional influence between transient solvent reorganization and photoinduced solute structural dynamics.

Branching mechanism of photoswitching in an Fe(II) polypyridyl complex explained by full singlet-triplet-quintet dynamics

It has long been known that irradiation with visible light converts Fe(II) polypyridines from their low-spin (singlet) to high-spin (quintet) state, yet mechanistic interpretation of the photorelaxation remains controversial. Herein, we simulate the full singlet-triplet-quintet dynamics of the [Fe(terpy)₂]²⁺ (terpy = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) complex in full dimension, in order to clarify the complex photodynamics. Importantly, we report a branching mechanism involving two sequential processes: a dominant ³MLCT→³MC(³T_2g)→³MC(³T_1g)→⁵MC, and a minor ³MLCT→³MC(³T_2g)→⁵MC component. (MLCT = metal-to-ligand charge transfer, MC = metal-centered). While the direct ³MLCT→⁵MC mechanism is considered as a relevant alternative, we show that it could only be operative, and thus lead to competing pathways, in the absence of ³MC states. The quintet state is populated on the sub-picosecond timescale involving non-exponential dynamics and coherent Fe-N breathing oscillations. The results are in agreement with the available time-resolved experimental data on Fe(II) polypyridines, and fully describe the photorelaxation dynamics.

Borylation in the Second Coordination Sphere of FeII Cyanido Complexes and Its Impact on Their Electronic Structures and Excited-State Dynamics

Second coordination sphere interactions of cyanido complexes with hydrogen-bonding solvents and Lewis acids are known to influence their electronic structures, whereby the non-labile attachment of B(C₆F₅)₃ resulted in several particularly interesting new compounds lately. Here, we investigate the effects of borylation on the properties of two Fe^II cyanido complexes in a systematic manner by comparing five different compounds and using a range of experimental techniques. Electrochemical measurements indicate that borylation entails a stabilization of the Fe^II-based t_2g-like orbitals by up to 1.65 eV, and this finding was confirmed by Mössbauer spectroscopy. This change in the electronic structure has a profound impact on the UV–vis absorption properties of the borylated complexes compared to the non-borylated ones, shifting their metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption bands over a wide range. Ultrafast UV–vis transient absorption spectroscopy provides insight into how borylation affects the excited-state dynamics. The lowest metal-centered (MC) excited states become shorter-lived in the borylated complexes compared to their cyanido analogues by a factor of ∼10, possibly due to changes in outer-sphere reorganization energies associated with their decay to the electronic ground state as a result of B(C₆F₅)₃ attachment at the cyanido N lone pair.

Borylation in the second coordination sphere of two well-known Fe^II cyanido complexes leads to isocyanoborato complexes. The effects of borylation on their electronic structure and photophysical properties are thoroughly investigated with a range of experimental techniques.

Optically Induced Anisotropy in Time-Resolved Scattering: Imaging Molecular-Scale Structure and Dynamics in Disordered Media with Experiment and Theory

Time-resolved scattering experiments enable imaging of materials at the molecular scale with femtosecond time resolution. However, in disordered media they provide access to just one radial dimension thus limiting the study of orientational structure and dynamics. Here we introduce a rigorous and practical theoretical framework for predicting and interpreting experiments combining optically induced anisotropy and time-resolved scattering. Using impulsive nuclear Raman and ultrafast x-ray scattering experiments of chloroform and simulations, we demonstrate that this framework can accurately predict and elucidate both the spatial and temporal features of these experiments.

Manganese(I) Complex with Monodentate Arylisocyanide Ligands Shows Photodissociation Instead of Luminescence

Recently reported manganese(I) complexes with chelating arylisocyanide ligands exhibit luminescent metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excited states, similar to ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes with the same d6 valence electron configuration used for many different applications in photophysics and photochemistry. However, chelating arylisocyanide ligands require substantial synthetic effort, and therefore it seemed attractive to explore the possibility of using more readily accessible monodentate arylisocyanides instead. Here, we synthesized the new Mn(I) complex [Mn(CNdippPhOMe2)6]PF6 with the known ligand CNdippPhOMe2 = 4-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-2,6-diisopropylphenylisocyanide. This complex was investigated by NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal structure analysis, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) measurements, IR spectroscopy supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, cyclic voltammetry, and time-resolved as well as steady-state UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The key finding is that the new Mn(I) complex is nonluminescent and instead undergoes arylisocyanide ligand loss during continuous visible laser irradiation into ligand-centered and charge-transfer absorption bands, presumably owed to the population of dissociative d-d excited states. Thus, it seems that chelating bi- or tridentate binding motifs are essential for obtaining emissive MLCT excited states in manganese(I) arylisocyanides. Our work contributes to understanding the basic properties of photoactive first-row transition metal complexes and could help advance the search for alternatives to precious metal-based luminophores, photocatalysts, and sensors.

Resolving Femtosecond Solvent Reorganization Dynamics in an Iron Complex by Nonadiabatic Dynamics Simulations

The ultrafast dynamical response of solute–solvent interactions plays a key role in transition metal complexes, where charge transfer states are ubiquitous. Nonetheless, there exist very few excited-state simulations of transition metal complexes in solution. Here, we carry out a nonadiabatic dynamics study of the iron complex [Fe(CN)₄(bpy)]^2– (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) in explicit aqueous solution. Implicit solvation models were found inadequate for reproducing the strong solvatochromism in the absorption spectra. Instead, direct solute–solvent interactions, in the form of hydrogen bonds, are responsible for the large observed solvatochromic shift and the general dynamical behavior of the complex in water. The simulations reveal an overall intersystem crossing time scale of 0.21 ± 0.01 ps and a strong reliance of this process on nuclear motion. A charge transfer character analysis shows a branched decay mechanism from the initially excited singlet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (¹MLCT) states to triplet states of ³MLCT and metal-centered (³MC) character. We also find that solvent reorganization after excitation is ultrafast, on the order of 50 fs around the cyanides and slower around the bpy ligand. In contrast, the nuclear vibrational dynamics, in the form of Fe–ligand bond changes, takes place on slightly longer time scales. We demonstrate that the surprisingly fast solvent reorganizing should be observable in time-resolved X-ray solution scattering experiments, as simulated signals show strong contributions from the solute–solvent scattering cross term. Altogether, the simulations paint a comprehensive picture of the coupled and concurrent electronic, nuclear, and solvent dynamics and interactions in the first hundreds of femtoseconds after excitation.

KiMoPack: A python Package for Kinetic Modeling of the Chemical Mechanism

Herein, we present KiMoPack, an analysis tool for the kinetic modeling of transient spectroscopic data. KiMoPack enables a state-of-the-art analysis routine including data preprocessing and standard fitting (global analysis), as well as fitting of complex (target) kinetic models, interactive viewing of (fit) results, and multiexperiment analysis via user accessible functions and a graphical user interface (GUI) enhanced interface. To facilitate its use, this paper guides the user through typical operations covering a wide range of analysis tasks, establishes a typical workflow and is bridging the gap between ease of use for less experienced users and introducing the advanced interfaces for experienced users. KiMoPack is open source and provides a comprehensive front-end for preprocessing, fitting and plotting of 2-dimensional data that simplifies the access to a powerful python-based data-processing system and forms the foundation for a well documented, reliable, and reproducible data analysis.

Simulating the solvation structure of low- and high-spin [Fe(bpy)3]2+: long-range dispersion and many-body effects

When characterizing transition metal complexes and their functionalities, the importance of including the solvent as an active participant is becoming more and more apparent. Whereas many studies have evaluated long-range dispersion effects inside organic molecules and organometallics, less is known about their role in solvation. Here, we have analysed the components within solute-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions of one of the most studied iron-based photoswitch model systems, in two spin states. We find that long-range dispersion effects modulate the coordination significantly, and that this is accurately captured by density functional theory models including dispersion corrections. We furthermore correlate gas-phase relaxed complex-water clusters to thermally averaged molecular densities. This shows how the gas-phase interactions translate to solution structure, quantified through 3D molecular densities, angular distributions, and radial distribution functions. We show that finite-size simulation cells can cause the radial distribution functions to have artificially enlarged amplitudes. Finally, we quantify the effects of many-body interactions within the solvent shells, and find that almost a fifth of the total interaction energy of the solute-shell system in the high-spin state comes from many-body contributions, which cannot be captured by by pair-wise additive force field methods.

Cobalt(III) Carbene Complex with an Electronic Excited-State Structure Similar to Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Compounds

Many organometallic iridium(III) complexes have photoactive excited states with mixed metal-to-ligand and intraligand charge transfer (MLCT/ILCT) character, which form the basis for numerous applications in photophysics and photochemistry. Cobalt(III) complexes with analogous MLCT excited-state properties seem to be unknown yet, despite the fact that iridium(III) and cobalt(III) can adopt identical low-spin d⁶ valence electron configurations due to their close chemical relationship. Using a rigid tridentate chelate ligand (L^CNC), in which a central amido π-donor is flanked by two σ-donating N-heterocyclic carbene subunits, we obtained a robust homoleptic complex [Co(L^CNC)₂](PF₆), featuring a photoactive excited state with substantial MLCT character. Compared to the vast majority of isoelectronic iron(II) complexes, the MLCT state of [Co(L^CNC)₂](PF₆) is long-lived because it does not deactivate as efficiently into lower-lying metal-centered excited states; furthermore, it engages directly in photoinduced electron transfer reactions. The comparison with [Fe(L^CNC)₂](PF₆), as well as structural, electrochemical, and UV–vis transient absorption studies, provides insight into new ligand design principles for first-row transition-metal complexes with photophysical and photochemical properties reminiscent of those known from the platinum group metals.

Light-induced protein structural dynamics in bacteriophytochrome revealed by time-resolved x-ray solution scattering

Bacteriophytochromes (BphPs) are photoreceptors that regulate a wide range of biological mechanisms via red light-absorbing (Pr)-to-far-red light-absorbing (Pfr) reversible photoconversion. The structural dynamics underlying Pfr-to-Pr photoconversion in a liquid solution phase are not well understood. We used time-resolved x-ray solution scattering (TRXSS) to capture light-induced structural transitions in the bathy BphP photosensory module of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Kinetic analysis of the TRXSS data identifies three distinct structural species, which are attributed to lumi-F, meta-F, and Pr, connected by time constants of 95 μs and 21 ms. Structural analysis based on molecular dynamics simulations shows that the light activation of PaBphP accompanies quaternary structural rearrangements from an "II"-framed close form of the Pfr state to an "O"-framed open form of the Pr state in terms of the helical backbones. This study provides mechanistic insights into how modular signaling proteins such as BphPs transmit structural signals over long distances and regulate their downstream biological responses.

Spin-flip luminescence

In molecular photochemistry, charge-transfer emission is well understood and widely exploited. In contrast, luminescent metal-centered transitions only came into focus in recent years. This gave rise to strongly phosphorescent Cr^III complexes with a d³ electronic configuration featuring luminescent metal-centered excited states which are characterized by the flip of a single spin. These so-called spin-flip emitters possess unique properties and require different design strategies than traditional charge-transfer phosphors. In this review, we give a brief introduction to ligand field theory as a framework to understand this phenomenon and outline prerequisites for efficient spin-flip emission including ligand field strength, symmetry, intersystem crossing and common deactivation pathways using Cr^III complexes as instructive examples. The recent progress and associated challenges of tuning the energies of emissive excited states and of emerging applications of the unique photophysical properties of spin-flip emitters are discussed. Finally, we summarize the current state-of-the-art and challenges of spin-flip emitters beyond Cr^III with d², d³, d⁴ and d⁸ electronic configuration, where we mainly cover pseudooctahedral molecular complexes of V, Mo, W, Mn, Re and Ni, and highlight possible future research opportunities.

Toward Simulation of Fe(II) Low-Spin → High-Spin Photoswitching by Synergistic Spin-Vibronic Dynamics

A new theoretical approach is presented and applied for the simulation of Fe(II) low-spin (LS, singlet, t_2g⁶e_g⁰) → high-spin (HS, quintet, t_2g⁴e_g²) photoswitching dynamics of the octahedral model complex [Fe(NCH)₆]²⁺. The utilized synergistic methodology heavily exploits the strengths of complementary electronic structure and spin-vibronic dynamics methods. Specifically, we perform 3D quantum dynamics (QD) and full-dimensional trajectory surface hopping (TSH, in conjunction with a linear vibronic coupling model), with the modes for QD selected by TSH. We follow a hybrid approach which is based on the application of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) excited-state potential energy surfaces (PESs) and multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) spin–orbit couplings (SOCs). Our method delivers accurate singlet–triplet–quintet intersystem crossing (ISC) dynamics, as assessed by comparison to our recent high-level ab initio simulations and related time-resolved experimental data. Furthermore, we investigate the capability of our simulations to identify the location of ISCs. Finally, we assess the approximation of constant SOCs (calculated at the Franck–Condon geometry), whose validity has central importance for the combination of TD-DFT PESs and CASPT2 SOCs. This efficient methodology will have a key role in simulating LS → HS dynamics for more complicated cases, involving higher density of states and varying electronic character, as well as the analysis of ultrafast experiments.

Quantifying the Steric Effect on Metal-Ligand Bonding in Fe Carbene Photosensitizers with Fe 2p3d Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Understanding the electronic structure and chemical bonding of transition metal complexes is important for improving the function of molecular photosensitizers and catalysts. We have utilized X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Fe L₃ edge to investigate the electronic structure of two Fe N-heterocyclic carbene complexes with similar chemical structures but different steric effects and contrasting excited-state dynamics: [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺ and [Fe(btbip)₂]²⁺, bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1-ylidine)pyridine and btbip = 2,6-bis(3-tert-butyl-imidazole-1-ylidene)pyridine. In combination with charge transfer multiplet and ab initio calculations, we quantified how changes in Fe-carbene bond length due to steric effects modify the metal-ligand bonding, including σ/π donation and π back-donation. We find that σ donation is significantly stronger in [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺, whereas the π back-donation is similar in both complexes. The resulting stronger ligand field and nephelauxetic effect in [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺ lead to approximately 1 eV destabilization of the quintet metal-centered ⁵T_2g excited state compared to [Fe(btbip)₂]²⁺, providing an explanation for the absence of a photoinduced ⁵T_2g population and a longer metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited-state lifetime in [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺. This work demonstrates how combined modeling of XAS and RIXS spectra can be utilized to understand the electronic structure of transition metal complexes governed by correlated electrons and donation/back-donation interactions.

Unveiling ultrafast dynamics in bridged bimetallic complexes using optical and X-ray transient absorption spectroscopies

In photosynthetic systems employing multiple transition metal centers, the properties of charge-transfer states are tuned by the coupling between metal centers. Here, we use ultrafast optical and X-ray spectroscopies to elucidate the effects of metal–metal interactions in a bimetallic tetrapyridophenazine-bridged Os(ii)/Cu(i) complex. Despite having an appropriate driving force for Os-to-Cu hole transfer in the Os(ii) moiety excited state, no such charge transfer was observed. However, excited-state coupling between the metal centers is present, evidenced by variations in the Os MLCT lifetime depending on the identity of the opposite metal center. This coupling results in concerted coherent vibrations appearing in the relaxation kinetics of the MLCT states for both Cu and Os centers. These vibrations are dominated by metal–ligand contraction at the Cu/Os centers, which are in-phase and linked through the conjugated bridging ligand. This study shows how vibronic coupling between transition metal centers affects the ultrafast dynamics in bridged, multi-metallic systems from the earliest times after photoexcitation to excited-state decay, presenting avenues for tuning charge-transfer states through judicious choice of metal/ligand groups.

Reaction dynamics studied via femtosecond X-ray liquidography at X-ray free-electron lasers

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) provide femtosecond X-ray pulses suitable for pump–probe time-resolved studies with a femtosecond time resolution. Since the advent of the first XFEL in 2009, recent years have witnessed a great number of applications with various pump–probe techniques at XFELs. Among these, time-resolved X-ray liquidography (TRXL) is a powerful method for visualizing structural dynamics in the liquid solution phase. Here, we classify various chemical and biological molecular systems studied via femtosecond TRXL (fs-TRXL) at XFELs, depending on the focus of the studied process, into (i) bond cleavage and formation, (ii) charge distribution and electron transfer, (iii) orientational dynamics, (iv) solvation dynamics, (v) coherent nuclear wavepacket dynamics, and (vi) protein structural dynamics, and provide a brief review on each category. We also lay out a plausible roadmap for future fs-TRXL studies for areas that have not been explored yet.

Reduction of Electron Repulsion in Highly Covalent Fe-Amido Complexes Counteracts the Impact of a Weak Ligand Field on Excited-State Ordering

The ability to access panchromatic absorption and long-lived charge-transfer (CT) excited states is critical to the pursuit of abundant-metal molecular photosensitizers. Fe(II) complexes supported by benzannulated diarylamido ligands have been reported to broadly absorb visible light with nanosecond CT excited state lifetimes, but as amido donors exert a weak ligand field, this defies conventional photosensitizer design principles. Here, we report an aerobically stable Fe(II) complex of a phenanthridine/quinoline diarylamido ligand, Fe(^ClL)₂, with panchromatic absorption and a 3 ns excited-state lifetime. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Fe L-edge and N K-edge, we experimentally validate the strong Fe-N_amido orbital mixing in Fe(^ClL)₂ responsible for the panchromatic absorption and demonstrate a previously unreported competition between ligand-field strength and metal-ligand (Fe-N_amido) covalency that stabilizes the ³CT state over the lowest energy triplet metal-centered (³MC) state in the ground-state geometry. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and density functional theory (DFT) suggest that formation of this CT state depopulates an orbital with Fe-N_amido antibonding character, causing metal-ligand bonds to contract and accentuating the geometric differences between CT and MC excited states. These effects diminish the driving force for electron transfer to metal-centered excited states and increase the intramolecular reorganization energy, critical properties for extending the lifetime of CT excited states. These findings highlight metal-ligand covalency as a novel design principle for elongating excited state lifetimes in abundant metal photosensitizers.

Ballistic ΔS = 2 intersystem crossing in a cobalt cubane following ligand-field excitation probed by extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy

Femtosecond M_2,3-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy is used to probe the excited-state dynamics of the cobalt cubane [Co^III₄O₄](OAc)₄(py)₄ (OAc = acetate, py = pyridine), a model for water oxidation catalysts. After ligand-field excitation, intersystem crossing (ISC) to a metal-centered quintet occurs in 38 fs. 30% of the hot quintet undergoes ballistic back-ISC directly to the singlet ground state, with the remainder relaxing to a long-lived triplet.

Multi-stimuli Photo and Redox-active Nanostructured Mesoporous Silica Films on Transparent Electrodes

Silica matrices hosting transition metal guest complexes may offer remarkable platforms for the development of advanced functional devices. We report here the elaboration of ordered and vertically oriented mesoporous silica thin films containing covalently attached tris(bipyridine)iron derivatives using a combination of electrochemically assisted self-assembly (EASA) method and Huisgen cycloaddition reaction. Such a versatile approach is primarily used to bind nitrogen-based chelating ligands such as (4-[(2-propyn-1-yloxy)]4'-methyl-2,2'-bypiridine, bpy') inside the nanochannels. Further derivatization of the bpy'-functionalized silica thin films is then achieved via a subsequent in-situ complexation step to generate [Fe(bpy)₂ (bpy')]²⁺ inside the mesopore channels. After giving spectroscopic evidences for the presence of such complexes in the functionalized film, electrochemistry is used to transform the confined diamagnetic (S=0) F e L S b p y 2 b p y ' 2 + species to paramagnetic (S=1/2) oxidized F e L S b p y 2 b p y ' 3 + species in a reversible way, while blue light irradiation (λ=470 nm) enables populating the short-lived paramagnetic (S=2) F e H S b p y 2 b p y ' 2 + excited state. [Fe(bpy)₂ (bpy')]²⁺ -functionalized ordered films are therefore both electro- and photo-active through the manipulation of the oxidation state and spin state of the confined complexes, paving the way for their integration in optoelectronic devices.

First experiments with a water-jet plasma X-ray source driven by the novel high-power-high-repetition rate L1 Allegra laser at ELI Beamlines

ELI Beamlines is a rapidly progressing pillar of the pan-European Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) project focusing on the development and deployment of science driven by high-power lasers for user operations. This work reports the results of a commissioning run of a water-jet plasma X-ray source driven by the L1 Allegra laser, outlining the current capabilities and future potential of the system. The L1 Allegra is one of the lasers developed in-house at ELI Beamlines, designed to be able to reach a pulse energy of 100 mJ at a 1 kHz repetition rate with excellent beam properties. The water-jet plasma X-ray source driven by this laser opens opportunities for new pump-probe experiments with sub-picosecond temporal resolution and inherent synchronization between pump and probe pulses.

Optical Kerr Effect of Liquid Acetonitrile Probed by Femtosecond Time-Resolved X-ray Liquidography

Optical Kerr effect (OKE) spectroscopy is a method that measures the time-dependent change of the birefringence induced by an optical laser pulse using another optical laser pulse and has been used often to study the ultrafast dynamics of molecular liquids. Here we demonstrate an alternative method, femtosecond time-resolved X-ray liquidography (fs-TRXL), where the microscopic structural motions related to the OKE response can be monitored using a different type of probe, i.e., X-ray solution scattering. By applying fs-TRXL to acetonitrile and a dye solution in acetonitrile, we demonstrate that different types of molecular motions around photoaligned molecules can be resolved selectively, even without any theoretical modeling, based on the anisotropy of two-dimensional scattering patterns and extra structural information contained in the q-space scattering data. Specifically, the dynamics of reorientational (libration and orientational diffusion) and translational (interaction-induced motion) motions are captured separately by anisotropic and isotropic scattering signals, respectively. Furthermore, the two different types of reorientational motions are distinguished from each other by their own characteristic scattering patterns and time scales. The measured time-resolved scattering signals are in excellent agreement with the simulated scattering signals based on a molecular dynamics simulation for plausible molecular configurations, providing the detailed structural description of the OKE response in liquid acetonitrile.

Reversible molecular motional switch based on circular photoactive protein oligomers exhibits unexpected photo-induced contraction

Molecular switches alterable between two stable states by environmental stimuli, such as light and temperature, offer the potential for controlling biological functions. Here, we report a circular photoswitchable protein complex made of multiple protein molecules that can rapidly and reversibly switch with significant conformational changes. The structural and photochromic properties of photoactive yellow protein (PYP) are harnessed to construct circular oligomer PYPs (coPYPs) of desired sizes. Considering the light-induced N-terminal protrusion of monomer PYP, we expected coPYPs would expand upon irradiation, but time-resolved X-ray scattering data reveal that the late intermediate has a pronounced light-induced contraction motion. This work not only provides an approach to engineering a novel protein-based molecular switch based on circular oligomers of well-known protein units but also demonstrates the importance of characterizing the structural dynamics of designed molecular switches.

Filming ultrafast roaming-mediated isomerization of bismuth triiodide in solution

Roaming reaction, defined as a reaction yielding products via reorientational motion in the long-range region (3 - 8 Å) of the potential, is a relatively recently proposed reaction pathway and is now regarded as a universal mechanism that can explain the unimolecular dissociation and isomerization of various molecules. The structural movements of the partially dissociated fragments originating from the frustrated bond fission at the onset of roaming, however, have been explored mostly via theoretical simulations and rarely observed experimentally. Here, we report an investigation of the structural dynamics during a roaming-mediated isomerization reaction of bismuth triiodide (BiI₃) in acetonitrile solution using femtosecond time-resolved x-ray liquidography. Structural analysis of the data visualizes the atomic movements during the roaming-mediated isomerization process including the opening of the Bi-I_b-I_c angle and the closing of I_a-Bi-I_b-I_c dihedral angle, each by ~40°, as well as the shortening of the I_b···I_c distance, following the frustrated bond fission.

Ultrafast coherent motion and helix rearrangement of homodimeric hemoglobin visualized with femtosecond X-ray solution scattering

Ultrafast motion of molecules, particularly the coherent motion, has been intensively investigated as a key factor guiding the reaction pathways. Recently, X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) have been utilized to elucidate the ultrafast motion of molecules. However, the studies on proteins using XFELs have been typically limited to the crystalline phase, and proteins in solution have rarely been investigated. Here we applied femtosecond time-resolved X-ray solution scattering (fs-TRXSS) and a structure refinement method to visualize the ultrafast motion of a protein. We succeeded in revealing detailed ultrafast structural changes of homodimeric hemoglobin involving the coherent motion. In addition to the motion of the protein itself, the time-dependent change of electron density of the hydration shell was tracked. Besides, the analysis on the fs-TRXSS data of myoglobin allows for observing the effect of the oligomeric state on the ultrafast coherent motion.

Femtosecond time-resolved X-ray solution scattering (fs-TRXSS) measurements provide information on the structural dynamics of proteins in solution. Here, the authors present a structure refinement method for the analysis of fs-TRXSS data and use it to characterise the ultrafast structural changes of homodimeric haemoglobin.
