Photopolymerization Approach to Advanced Polymer Composites: Integration of Surface-Modified Nanofillers for Enhanced Properties

The incorporation of functionalized nanofillers into polymers via photopolymerization approach has gained significant attention in recent years due to the unique properties of the resulting composite materials. Surface modification of nanofillers plays a crucial role in their compatibility and polymerization behavior within the polymer matrix during photopolymerization. This review focuses on the recent developments in surface modification of various nanofillers, enabling their integration into polymer systems through photopolymerization. The review discusses the key aspects of surface modification of nanofillers, including the selection of suitable surface modifiers, such as photoinitiators and polymerizable groups, as well as the optimization of modification conditions to achieve desired surface properties. The influence of surface modification on the interfacial interactions between nanofillers and the polymer matrix is also explored, as it directly impacts the final properties of the nanocomposites. Furthermore, the review highlights the applications of nanocomposites prepared by photopolymerization, such as sensors, gas separation membranes, purification systems, optical devices, and biomedical materials. By providing a comprehensive overview of the surface modification strategies and their impact on the photopolymerization process and the resulting nanocomposite properties, this review aims to inspire new research directions and innovative ideas in the development of high-performance polymer nanocomposites for diverse applications.

Nanoscale effects of TiO2 nanoparticles on the rheological behaviors of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)

Considering the molar mass between entanglements to be an intrinsic property of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), the number of entanglements per chain increases with increasing molar mass, correspondingly making the UHMWPE intractable. Herein, we dispersed TiO₂ nanoparticles with different characteristics into UHMWPE solutions to disentangle the molecular chains. Compared with the UHMWPE pure solution, the viscosity of the mixture solution declines by 91.22%, and the critical overlap concentration increases from 1 wt% to 1.4 wt%. A rapid precipitation method was utilized to obtain UHMWPE and UHMWPE/TiO₂ composites from the solutions. The melting index of UHMWPE/TiO₂ is 68.85 mg, which is in sharp contrast to that of UHMWPE which is 0 mg. We characterized the microstructures of UHMWPE/TiO₂ nanocomposites using TEM, SAXS, DMA, and DSC. Accordingly, this significant improvement in processability contributed to the reduction of entanglements and a schematic model was proposed to explain the mechanism by which nanoparticles disentangle molecular chains. Simultaneously, the composite demonstrated better mechanical properties than UHMWPE. In summary, we provide a strategy to promote the processability of UHMWPE without sacrificing its outstanding mechanical properties.

Intensified Nonequilibrium Effect of Polymer Nanocomposites with Decreasing Nanoparticle Size

What are the most important and decisive parameters that determine the structure and the property of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs)? Previous studies answered that controlling the nanoparticle interface is critical, which can be achieved with a choice of a compatible nanoparticle, a proper surface modification, and a change in the polymer chain length. In addition to these parameters, the processing condition of PNCs has recently emerged as an influential parameter for controlling PNC properties, suggesting the existence of the nonequilibrium effect of PNCs. In this regard, we chose the solvent as a main change in the processing condition and investigated the initial solvent-driven nonequilibrium effect of PNCs with varied nanoparticle (NP) sizes. We found that the type of the initial solvent is indeed crucial in determining the ultimate properties of the PNCs, and this becomes more influential as the size of NPs decreases. The decreasing size of NPs causes a conformational change in the adsorbed polymers from tightly packed layers to loosely dangling chains. This results in much greater differences in NP microstructures and rheological properties of PNCs, indicating a stronger nonequilibrium effect with smaller NPs.

Processing method determines the long-term stability of particle dispersions in concentrated nanoparticle/polymer suspensions

Since the degree of particle dispersion can determine the physical properties of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs), plenty of studies have focused on the intrinsic parameters of PNCs such as the concentration/size/chemistry of nanoparticles/polymers relevant to the particle microstructure. While the consideration of these parameters is based on PNCs being in their equilibrium states, PNCs can be kinetically trapped in a nonequilibrium state during the multiple steps of processing. In other words, processing conditions can contribute more significantly to particle dispersion and the properties of PNCs beyond the effects of the intrinsic parameters. Hence, a systematic understanding of the nonequilibrium behaviour of PNCs is required to achieve the desired properties. In this work, we prepared concentrated suspensions with two different preparation pathways. The two different pathways yield different polymer conformations particularly near the particle surface despite the same composition of particles/polymers as the systems are trapped in a nonequilibrium state. Accordingly, the particle microstructures are also greatly changed by the preparation pathway. We found that even in the presence of solvents, these preparation pathway-dependent nonequilibrium effects on particle microstructures persist after several months of aging and ultimately determine the long-term stability of the particle dispersion.

Multifunctional Electrospun Nanofibers Based on Biopolymer Blends and Magnetic Tubular Halloysite for Medical Applications

Tubular halloysite (HNT) is a naturally occurring aluminosilicate clay with a unique combination of natural availability, good biocompatibility, high mechanical strength, and functionality. This study explored the effects of magnetically responsive halloysite (MHNT) on the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and magnetic and mechanical properties of electrospun nanofibers based on polycaprolactone (PCL) and gelatine (Gel) blends. MHNT was prepared via a simple modification of HNT with a perchloric-acid-stabilized magnetic fluid–methanol mixture. PCL/Gel nanofibers containing 6, 9, and 12 wt.% HNT and MHNT were prepared via an electrospinning process, respecting the essential rules for medical applications. The structure and properties of the prepared nanofibers were studied using infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and electron microscopy (SEM, STEM) along with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), magnetometry, and mechanical analysis. It was found that the incorporation of the studied concentrations of MHNT into PCL/Gel nanofibers led to soft magnetic biocompatible materials with a saturation magnetization of 0.67 emu/g and coercivity of 15 Oe for nanofibers with 12 wt.% MHNT. Moreover, by applying both HNT and MHNT, an improvement of the nanofibers structure was observed, together with strong reinforcing effects. The greatest improvement was observed for nanofibers containing 9 wt.% MHNT when increases in tensile strength reached more than two-fold and the elongation at break reached a five-fold improvement.

Role of Adsorbed Polymers on Nanoparticle Dispersion in Drying Polymer Nanocomposite Films

Polymers adsorbed on nanoparticles (NPs) are important elements that determine the dispersion of NPs in polymer nanocomposite (PNC) films. While previous studies have shown that increasing the number of adsorbed polymers on NPs can improve their dispersion during the drying process, the exact mechanism remained unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of adsorbed polymers in determining the microstructure and dispersion of NPs during the drying process. Investigation of the structural development of NPs using the synchrotron vertical-small-angle X-ray scattering technique revealed that increasing polymer adsorption suppresses bonding between the NPs at later stages of drying, when they approach each other and come in contact. On the particle length scale, NPs with large amounts of adsorbed polymers form loose clusters, whereas those with smaller amounts of adsorbed polymers form dense clusters. On the cluster length scale, loose clusters of NPs with large amounts of adsorbed polymers build densely packed aggregates, while dense clusters of NPs with small amounts of adsorbed polymers become organized into loose aggregates. The potential for the quantitative control of NP dispersion in PNC films via modification of polymer adsorption was established in this study.

Effect of surface properties and polymer chain length on polymer adsorption in solution

In polymer nanoparticle composites (PNCs) with attractive interactions between nanoparticles (NPs) and polymers, a bound layer of the polymer forms on the NP surface, with significant effects on the macroscopic properties of the PNCs. The adsorption and wetting behaviors of polymer solutions in the presence of a solid surface are critical to the fabrication process of PNCs. In this study, we use both classical density functional theory (cDFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study dilute and semi-dilute solutions of short polymer chains near a solid surface. Using cDFT, we calculate the equilibrium properties of polymer solutions near a flat surface while varying the solvent quality, surface-fluid interactions, and the polymer chain lengths to investigate their effects on the polymer adsorption and wetting transitions. Using MD simulations, we simulate polymer solutions near solid surfaces with three different curvatures (a flat surface and NPs with two radii) to study the static conformation of the polymer bound layer near the surface and the dynamic chain adsorption process. We find that the bulk polymer concentration at which the wetting transition in the poor solvent system occurs is not affected by the difference in surface-fluid interactions; however, a threshold value of surface-fluid interaction is needed to observe the wetting transition. We also find that with good solvent, increasing the chain length or the difference in the surface-polymer interaction relative to the surface-solvent interaction increases the surface coverage of polymer segments and independent chains for all surface curvatures. Finally, we demonstrate that the polymer segmental adsorption times are heavily influenced only by the surface-fluid interactions, although polymers desorb more quickly from highly curved surfaces.

UV Protective, Antioxidant, Antibacterial and Compostable Polylactic Acid Composites Containing Pristine and Chemically Modified Lignin Nanoparticles

Polylactic acid (PLA) films containing 1 wt % and 3 wt % of lignin nanoparticles (pristine (LNP), chemically modified with citric acid (caLNP) and acetylated (aLNP)) were prepared by extrusion and characterized in terms of their overall performance as food packaging materials. Morphological, mechanical, thermal, UV–Vis barrier, antioxidant and antibacterial properties were assayed; appropriate migration values in food simulants and disintegration in simulated composting conditions were also verified. The results obtained indicated that all lignin nanoparticles succeeded in conferring UV-blocking, antioxidant and antibacterial properties to the PLA films, especially at the higher filler loadings assayed. Chemical modification of the fillers partially reduced the UV protection and the antioxidant properties of the resulting composites, but it induced better nanoparticles dispersion, reduced aggregates size, enhanced ductility and improved aesthetic quality of the films through reduction of the characteristic dark color of lignin. Migration tests and disintegration assays of the nanocomposites in simulated composting conditions indicated that, irrespectively of their formulation, the multifunctional nanocomposite films prepared behaved similarly to neat PLA.

Creep attenuation in glassy polymer nanocomposites with variable polymer-nanoparticle interactions

The use of nanoparticle reinforced polymer matrices in continuous fiber composites for infrastructure applications requires a comprehensive understanding of viscoelastic creep. Critical parameters affecting the mechanical reinforcement offered by nanoparticles include nanoparticle size and concentration, as well as the interaction between the nanoparticle surface and polymer matrix. Here, we study the viscoelastic creep of nanocomposite systems comprised of glassy thermoplastic polymers and spherical silica nanoparticles of varying sizes and surface functionalization using a dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) accelerated testing methodology. Significant differences in the nanoparticle dispersions in these nanocomposites were observed via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and are attributed to differences in the polymer-polymer and polymer-particle interaction strengths. The DMA measurements indicate a decrease in compliance at short times with increased nanoparticle loading that is largely independent of nanoparticle dispersion morphology and polymer-particle interaction strength. Conversely, long term creep behavior shows a much stronger dependence on these parameters with the creep onset time increasing by up to three orders of magnitude. For similar nanoparticle loadings, the time to critical deformation in systems with well-distributed, networked nanoparticle morphologies was larger by an order of magnitude compared to systems exhibiting strong nanoparticle aggregation. The networked systems delayed the time to critical deformation by three orders of magnitude over that of neat polymer. The increase in time to critical deformation is also greater in composites with smaller nanoparticles at similar loadings, which we attribute to the development of percolated nanoparticle networks. These results demonstrate the significant effects polymer-particle interactions and dispersion morphologies can have on the long-term creep compliance of thermoplastic nanocomposites.

Initial Solvent-Driven Nonequilibrium Effect on Structure, Properties, and Dynamics of Polymer Nanocomposites

Unusual structures and dynamic properties found in polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) are often attributed to immobilized (adsorbed) polymers at nanoparticle-polymer interfaces, which are responsible for reducing the intrinsic incompatibility between nanoparticles and polymers in PNCs. Although tremendous effort has been made to characterize the presence of immobilized polymers, a systematic understanding of the structure and dynamics under different processing conditions is still lacking. Here, we report that the initial dispersing solvent, which is not present after producing PNCs, drives these nonequilibrium effects on polymer chain dynamics at interfaces. Employing extensive small-angle scattering, proton NMR spectroscopy, and rheometry experiments, we found that the thickness of the immobilized layer can be dependent on the initial solvent, changing the structure and the properties of the PNC significantly. In addition, we show that the outcome of the initial solvent effect becomes more effective at particle volume fractions where the immobile layers begin to interact.

Novel Attribute of Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Coatings for Protection and Preservation of Materials (Stone and Wood) Belonging to Cultural Heritage

In order to protect a material belonging to Cultural Heritage (i.e., stone, wood) from weathering, and in turn to preserve its beauty and historical value for the future generations, the contact with external harmful agents, particularly water, must be avoided, or at least limited. This task can be successfully obtained with the use of a protective organic coating. The use of nano-metric reinforcing agents in conventional polymeric coatings demonstrated to be a successful route in achieving better protective performance of the films and improved physical properties, even in extreme environments. The present paper would, therefore, review the more recent findings in this field. Generally speaking, when a hydrophobic product is applied on its surface, the stone material will absorb less water and consequently, less substances which may be harmful to it. An efficient organic coating should also supply wear and abrasion resistance, resistance to aggressive chemicals, excellent bond to the substrate; finally, it should be also able to guarantee vapor exchange between the environment and the material interior, i.e., the material should keep the same water vapor permeability as if it was un-protected. To regard to the conservation of wood artifacts, protective treatments for wood will preserve the material from environmental agents and biological attack. Hence, potential advantages of hybrid (organic–inorganic) nano-composite coatings for stone/wood have been found to be: Enhanced mechanical properties in comparison to the pure polymeric matrix, due to the reinforcing effect of the nano-filler; superior barrier properties (the presence of the nano-filler hinders the ingress of water and/or potentially harmful chemicals); optical clarity and transparency. It has been found that the efficacy of a nano-filled coating strongly depends on the effectiveness of the method used to uniformly disperse the nano-filler in the polymeric matrix. Furthermore, the presence of nano-particles should not impair the viscosity of the organic matrix, in order to employ the conventional techniques of application for coatings.
