Tuning the order of colloidal monolayers: assembly of heterogeneously charged colloids close to a patterned substrate

Triboelectric Charging of Particles, an Ongoing Matter: From the Early Onset of Planet Formation to Assembling Crystals

Triboelectrification is the spontaneous charging of two bodies when released from contact. Even though its manifestation is commonplace, in for instance triboelectric nanogenerators, scientists find the tribocharging mechanism a mystery. The primary aim of this mini-review is to provide an overview of different tribocharging concepts that have been applied to study and realize the formation of ordered stable structures using different objects on various length scales. Relevance spans from materials to planet formations. Especially, dry assembly methods of particles of different shapes based on tribocharging to obtain crystal structures or monolayers are considered. In addition, the current technology employed to examine tribocharging in (semi)dry environments is discussed as well as the relevant forces playing a role in the assembly process. In brief, this mini-review is expected to provide a better understanding of tribocharging in assembling objects on the nano- and micrometer scales.

Self-organization of agitated microspheres on various substrates

The vibration dynamics of relatively large granular grains is extensively treated in the literature, but comparable studies on the self-assembly of smaller agitated beads are lacking. In this work, we investigate how the particle properties and the properties of the underlying substrate surface affect the dynamics and self-organization of horizontally agitated monodisperse microspheres with diameters between 3 and 10 μm. Upon agitation, the agglomerated hydrophilic silica particles locally leave traces of particle monolayers as they move across the flat uncoated and fluorocarbon-coated silicon substrates. However, on the micromachined silicon tray with relatively large surface roughness, the agitated silica agglomerates form segregated bands reminiscent of earlier studies on granular suspensions or Faraday heaps. On the other hand, the less agglomerated hydrophobic polystyrene particles form densely occupied monolayer arrangements regardless of the underlying substrate. We explain the observations by considering the relevant adhesion and friction forces between particles and underlying substrates as well as those among the particles themselves. Interestingly, for both types of microspheres, large areas of the fluorocarbon-coated substrates are covered with densely occupied particle monolayers. By qualitatively examining the morphology of the self-organized particle monolayers using the Voronoi approach, it is understood that these monolayers are highly disordered, i.e., multiple symmetries coexist in the self-organized monolayers. However, more structured symmetries are identified in the monolayers of the agitated polystyrene microspheres on all the substrates, albeit not all precisely positioned on a hexagonal lattice. On the other hand, both the silica and polystyrene monolayers on the bare silicon substrates transition into less disordered structures as time progresses. Using Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements, we show that due to the tribocharging phenomenon, the formation of particle monolayers is promoted on the fluorocarbon surface, i.e., a local electrostatic attraction exists between the particle and the substrate.

Computer simulations of self-assembly of anisotropic colloids

Computer simulations have played a significant role in understanding the physics of colloidal self-assembly, interpreting experimental observations, and predicting novel mesoscopic and crystalline structures. Recent advances in computer simulations of colloidal self-assembly driven by anisotropic or orientation-dependent inter-particle interactions are highlighted in this review. These interactions are broadly classified into two classes: entropic and enthalpic interactions. They mainly arise due to shape anisotropy, surface heterogeneity, compositional heterogeneity, external field, interfaces, and confinements. Key challenges and opportunities in the field are discussed.

Controlling disorder in self-assembled colloidal monolayers via evaporative processes

Monolayers of assembled nano-objects with a controlled degree of disorder hold interest in many optical applications, including photovoltaics, light emission, sensing, and structural coloration. Controlled disorder can be achieved through either top-down or bottom-up approaches, but the latter is more suited to large-scale, low-cost fabrication. Disordered colloidal monolayers can be assembled through evaporatively driven convective assembly, a bottom-up process with a wide range of parameters impacting particle placement. Motivated by the photonic applications of such monolayers, in this review we discuss the quantification of monolayer disorder, and the assembly methods that have been used to produce them. We review the impact of particle and solvent properties, as well as the use of substrate patterning, to create the desired spatial distributions of particles.

Study of the aggregation behavior of Janus particles by coupling experiments and Brownian dynamics simulations

HYPOTHESIS

New colloids such as inverse patchy particles or Janus particles are considered as smart building blocks in the development of innovative and performant materials. For example, the control of the self-assembly of oxide-based charged Janus particles is interesting for ceramic shaping. Thus, the synthesis of silica based Janus particles as well as a detailed study of their behavior in suspension are presented in this paper.

EXPERIMENTS

Fluorescent silica particles are partially modified in surface by grafting amine groups using a Pickering emulsion route. Zeta potential measurements, sedimentation tests and confocal microscopy observations are carried out to analyze the aggregation of the obtained particles in aqueous suspension as a function of the patch size and of the pH. Brownian dynamics simulations are also performed to better understand the aggregate structures.

FINDINGS

The aggregation of the synthesized silica-based Janus particles can be tuned by modifying the experimental parameters, and elongated or on the contrary more compact structures could be observed. This control of aggregation makes such particles promising to build new ceramic materials.

Shape control of soft patchy nanoparticles under confinement

Molecular building blocks undergoing a hierarchical assembly process form nano-scale objects which can further assemble into supramolecular structures. When the intermediate units have a limited valence in bonding, complex structures with tailored properties can be created. Here, we consider a composite, star-shaped particle made of f diblock copolymer chains uniformly grafted on a spherical colloid and investigate its first self-assembly stage both in the bulk and under lateral confinement. By means of numerical simulations, we show that, in the bulk, this system develops aggregates whose number and size depend on the temperature as well as on the relative ratio of solvophobic monomers. The emerging aggregates are referred to as patches and impart directionality in bonding to the complex particle. We further characterize how we can control, by changing the lateral confinement, the shape of the brush and the patch properties as a function of the distance between the confining walls. We find that the number of the patches can be determined by tuning the degree of confinement imposed on the particle. Finally, we employ a continuum mechanics model, known as the Liquid Drop Model, to gain insight into the elastic properties of the system. This theoretical approach allows to connect the patch properties to the elastic response of the composite particle.

Brownian dynamics simulations of one-patch inverse patchy particles

Inverse patchy particles are promising colloids to develop new architectures in ceramic materials based on their self-assembly. Nonetheless, a good understanding of their aggregation is required. Several previous studies have shown that the behavior of ceramic colloids can be well described by the DLVO interaction potential. In the present paper, we develop new coarse-grained Brownian dynamics simulations, where particles are represented by an assembly of beads interacting via DLVO interactions, whose parameters can be directly linked to experimental characterization. First, the validity of the simulations is proved by studying the heteroaggregation of homogeneously charged particles. Then, simulations are applied to one-patch inverse patchy particles to study the effect of the patch size. They show that the smaller the patch, the more elongated the aggregates. Simulations are also performed to understand the role of the Debye screening length in the particular case of large patches and they show that aggregation leads always to compact aggregates.

Non-Close-Packed Particle Arrays Based on Anisotropic Red Blood Cell (RBC) like Particles via Stretching Deformation Method

Non-close-packed (NCP) particle arrays have potential applications in many fields such as photonics and sensors. However, due to thermodynamic stability, it is still a challenge to produce NCP arrays by the traditional approach. Here, we demonstrated a facile method to fabricate hexagonal close-packed (HCP) arrays with different orientations from that of the Janus particles. After that, the HCP arrays can be easily tuned by stretching deformation of polyethylene film. By tuning the stretching elongations, NCP arrays with five Bravais lattice structures were obtained. Besides, to fabricate the complex structure, these arrays were used as templates to assemble binary particle arrays. Such tunable crystal lattice and binary self-assembly crystal can be useful for fabricating more flexible structures and more open systems.
