Abstract
Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of 1-octene as non-activated model substrate with neutral water as H-donor is reported, using [(tBuPCP)Ir(H)(Cl)] (1) as the catalyst, to form octane with high faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96 % and a kobs of 87 s-1. Cyclic voltammetry with 1 revealed that two subsequent reductions trigger the elimination of Cl- and afford the highly reactive anionic Ir(I) hydride complex [(tBuPCP)Ir(H)]- (2), a previously merely proposed intermediate for which we now report first experimental data by mass spectrometry. In absence of alkene, the stoichiometric electrolysis of 1 in THF with water selectively affords the Ir(III) dihydride complex [(tBuPCP)Ir(H)2] (3) in 88 % FE from the reaction of 2 with H2O. Complex 3 then hydrogenates the alkene in classical fashion. The presented electro-hydrogenation works with extremely high FE, because the iridium hydrides are water stable, which prevents H2 formation. Even in strongly alkaline conditions (Bu4NOH added), the electro-hydrogenation of 1-octene with 1 also proceeds cleanly (89 % FE), suggesting a highly robust process that may rely on H2O activation, reminiscent to transfer hydrogenation pathways, instead of classical H+ reduction. DFT calculations confirmed oxidative addition of H2O as a key step in this context.

Abstract
The proton of alcohols as the sole hydrogen source in diboron-mediated nickel-catalyzed asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of cyclic N-sulfonyl imines has been developed, providing the chiral cyclic sulfamidates in excellent enantioselectivities. The mechanistic investigations suggested that the proton of alcohols could be activated by tetrahydroxydiboron to form active nickel hydride species.

Abstract
A novel cobalt hydrogen-bonded organic framework (Co-HOF, C24H14CoN4O8) was synthesized from a mixed linker, that is, 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC) and 2,2'-bipyridyl (BPY) linkers and cobalt ion through a simple, one-pot, low-cost, and scalable solvothermal method. The Co-HOF was fully characterized using several analytical and spectroscopic techniques including single-crystal X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Co-HOF exhibits high thermal and chemical stabilities compared to previously reported HOF materials. Moreover, Co-HOF shows excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation due to its narrow band gap of 2.05 eV. The cycloaddition reaction of CO2 to variable epoxides was investigated to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of Co-HOF under visible light radiation and was found to produce the corresponding cyclic carbonates in yields up to 99.9%.

Abstract
It is very desirable to develop a facile controllable method for selective semihydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes with a cheap and safe hydrogen donor but remains a big challenge. H2O is one of the best choices of the transfer hydrogenation agent of the world, and the development of methods for synthesizing E- and Z-alkenes using H2O as the hydrogen source is worthwhile. In this article, a palladium-catalyzed synthesis of E- and Z-alkenes from alkynes using H2O as the hydrogenation agent was reported. The use of di-tert-butylphosphinous chloride (t-Bu2PCl) and triethanolamine/sodium acetate (TEOA/NaOAc) was essential for the stereo-selective semihydrogenation of alkynes. The general applicability of this procedure was highlighted by the synthesis of more than 48 alkenes, with good yields and high stereoselectivities.

Abstract
A base-assisted metal species modulation mechanism enables Ni-catalyzed stereodivergent transfer semihydrogenation of alkynes with water, delivering both olefinic isomers smoothly using cheap and nontoxic catalysts and additives. Different from most precedents, in which E-alkenes derive from the isomerization of Z-alkene products, the isomers were formed in orthogonal catalytic pathways. Mechanistic studies suggest base as a key early element in modulation of the reaction pathways: by adding different bases, nickel species with disparate valence states could be accessed to initiate two catalytic cycles toward different stereoisomers. The practicability of the method is showcased with nearly 70 examples, including internal and terminal triple bonds, enynes and diynes, affording semi-hydrogenated products in high yields and selectivity.

Abstract
The copper(i) alumanyl derivative, [{SiNDipp}Al-Cu(NHCiPr)] (SiNDipp = {CH2SiMe2NDipp}2; Dipp = 2,6-di-isopropylphenyl; NHCiPr = N,N'-di-isopropyl-4,5-dimethyl-2-ylidene), reacts in a stepwise fashion with up to three equivalents of various terminal alkynes. This reactivity results in the sequential formation of cuprous (hydrido)(alkynyl)aluminate, (alkenyl)(alkynyl)aluminate and bis(alkynyl)aluminate derivatives, examples of which have been fully characterised. The process of alkene liberation resulting from the latter reaction step constitutes a unique case of alkyne transfer semi-hydrogenation in which the C-H acidic alkyne itself acts as a source of proton, with the Cu-Al bond providing the requisite electrons to effect reduction. This reaction sequence is validated by DFT calculations, which rationalise the variable stability of the initially formed heterobimetallic hydrides.

Abstract
The hydrogenation of alkynes allows the synthesis of olefins, which are important feedstock for the materials, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical industry. Thus, methods that enable this transformation via low-cost metal catalysis are desirable. However, achieving stereochemical control in this reaction is a long-standing challenge. Here, we report on the chromium-catalyzed E- and Z-selective olefin synthesis via hydrogenation of alkynes, controlled by two carbene ligands. A cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene ligand that contains a phosphino anchor enables the hydrogenation of alkynes in a trans-addition manner, selectively forming E-olefins. With an imino anchor-incorporated carbene ligand, the stereoselectivity can be switched, giving mainly Z-isomers. This ligand-enabled geometrical stereoinversion strategy by one metal catalysis overrides common methods in control of the E- and Z-selectivity with two different metal catalysis, allowing for highly efficient and on-demand access to both E- and Z-olefins in a stereo-complementary fashion. Mechanistic studies indicate that the different steric effect between these two carbene ligands may mainly dominate the selective forming E- or Z-olefins in control of the stereochemistry.

Abstract
A visible-light mediated chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of α-aryl imino esters was demonstrated. The methodology allowed the efficient and practical preparation of α-amino acid esters. The mechanism of the reaction was probed by DFT calculations, and deuteration experiments indicated deuterium was introduced into amino acid esters efficiently (up to 99 % D ratio), enabling a feasible way to obtain deuterated amino acids using D2 O as a cheap deuterium source.

Abstract
The chemo- and stereoselective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is a fundamental transformation in synthetic chemistry, for which the use of precious 4d or 5d metal catalysts is well-established. In mankind's unwavering quest for sustainability, research focus has considerably veered towards the 3d metals. Given their high abundancy and availability as well as lower toxicity and noxiousness, they are undoubtedly attractive from both an economic and an environmental perspective. Herein, we wish to present noteworthy and groundbreaking examples for the use of 3d metal catalysts for diastereoselective alkyne semi-hydrogenation as we embark on a journey through the first-row transition metals.

Abstract

Catalytic semihydrogenation of internal alkynes using
H2 is an attractive atom-economical route to various alkenes,
and its
stereocontrol has received widespread attention, both in homogeneous
and heterogeneous catalyses. Herein, a novel strategy is introduced,
whereby a poisoning catalytic thiol is employed as a reversible inhibitor
of a ruthenium catalyst, resulting in a controllable H2-based semihydrogenation of internal alkynes. Both (E)- and (Z)-alkenes were obtained efficiently and
highly selectively, under very mild conditions, using a single homogeneous
acridine-based ruthenium pincer catalyst. Mechanistic studies indicate
that the (Z)-alkene is the reaction intermediate
leading to the (E)-alkene and that the addition of
a catalytic amount of bidentate thiol impedes the Z/E isomerization step by forming stable ruthenium
thiol(ate) complexes, while still allowing the main hydrogenation
reaction to proceed. Thus, the absence or presence of catalytic thiol
controls the stereoselectivity of this alkyne semihydrogenation, affording
either the (E)-isomer as the final product or halting
the reaction at the (Z)-intermediate. The developed
system, which is also applied to the controllable isomerization of
a terminal alkene, demonstrates how metal catalysis with switchable
selectivity can be achieved by reversible inhibition of the catalyst
with a simple auxiliary additive.

Abstract
Energy transfer plays a special role in photocatalysis by utilizing the potential energy of the excited state through indirect excitation, in which a photosensitizer determines the thermodynamic feasibility of the reaction. Bioinspired by the energy-transfer ability of natural product cercosporin, here we developed a green and highly efficient organic photosensitizer HiBRCP (hexaisobutyryl reduced cercosporin) through structural modification of cercosporin. After structural manipulation, its triplet energy was greatly improved, and then, it could markedly promote the efficient geometrical isomerization of alkenes from the E-isomer to the Z-isomer. Moreover, it was also effective for energy-transfer-mediated organometallic catalysis, which allowed realization of the cross-coupling of aryl bromides and carboxylic acids through efficient energy transfer from HiBRCP to nickel complexes. Thus, the study on the relationship between structural manipulation and their photophysical properties provided guidance for further modification of cercosporin, which could be applied to more meaningful and challenging energy-transfer reactions.

Abstract
A general and effective palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of organostibines with styrenes to give (E)-olefins was disclosed. By the use of an organostibine reagent, this method can produce unsymmetric (E)-1,2-diarylethylenes and (1E,3E)-1,4-diarylbuta-1,3-dienes in good yields with high E/Z selectivity and good functional group tolerance. Resveratrol and DMU-212 were synthesized in high yield. The protocol can be extended to the synthesis of (1E,3E,5E)-1,6-diphenylhexa-1,3,5-triene in 40% yield. Products 5e, 5f, and 7a showed good photoluminescence quantum yields ranging from 72 to 99%.

Abstract
![]()
Selective
direct ruthenium-catalyzed semihydrogenation of diaryl
alkynes to the corresponding E-alkenes has been achieved
using alcohols as the hydrogen source. The method employs a simple
ruthenium catalyst, does not require external ligands, and affords
the desired products in > 99% NMR yield in most cases (up to 93%
isolated
yield). Best results were obtained using benzyl alcohol as the hydrogen
donor, although biorenewable alcohols such as furfuryl alcohol could
also be applied. In addition, tandem semihydrogenation–alkylation
reactions were demonstrated, with potential applications in the synthesis
of resveratrol derivatives.

Abstract
Stereoselective alkyne semihydrogenations are attractive approaches to alkenes, which are key building blocks for synthesis. With regards to the most atom-economic reducing agent dihydrogen (H2 ), only few catalysts for the challenging E-selective alkyne semihydrogenation have been disclosed, each with a unique substrate scope profile. Here, we show that a commercially available nickel catalyst facilitates the E-selective alkyne semihydrogenation of a wide variety of substituted internal alkynes. This results in a simple and broadly applicable overall protocol to stereoselectively access E-alkenes employing H2 , which could serve as a general method for synthesis.
