Reductions of Arenes using a Magnesium-Dinitrogen Complex

In this contribution, we present "Birch-type", and other reductions of simple arenes by the potassium salt of an anionic magnesium dinitrogen complex, [{K(TCHPNON)Mg}2(μ-N2)] (TCHPNON=4,5-bis(2,4,6-tricyclohexylanilido)-2,7-diethyl-9,9-dimethyl-xanthene), which acts as a masked dimagnesium(I) diradical in these reactions. This reagent is non-hazardous, easy-to-handle, and in some cases provides access to 1,4-cyclohexadiene reduction products under relatively mild reaction conditions. This system works effectively to reduce benzene, naphthalene and anthracene through magnesium-bound "Birch-type" reduction intermediates. Cyclohexadiene products can be subsequently released from the magnesium centres by protonolysis with methanol. In contrast, the reduction of substituted arenes is less selective and involves competing reaction pathways. For toluene and 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, the structural authentication of "Birch-type" reduction intermediates is conclusive, although the formation of corresponding 1,4-cyclohexadiene derivatives was low yielding. Reduction of anisole did not yield an isolable "Birch-type" intermediate, but instead gave a C-O activation product. Treating triphenylphosphine with [{K(TCHPNON)Mg}2(μ-N2)] resulted in the extrusion of both biphenyl and dinitrogen to afford a magnesium(II) phosphanide [{K(TCHPNON)Mg(μ-PPh2)}2]. Reduction of fluorobenzene proceeded via C-F activation of the arene, and isolation of the magnesium(II) fluoride [{K(TCHPNON)Mg(μ-F)}2]. Finally, the two-electron reduction of 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) with [{K(TCHPNON)Mg}2(μ-N2)] yielded a complex, [{K(TCHPNON)Mg}2(μ-COT)], incorporating the aromatic dianion (COT2-).

Synthesis and Reactivity of Discrete Europium(II) Hydride Complexes

The bulky β-diketiminate ligand frameworks [BDIDCHP]- and [BDIDipp/Ar]- (BDI=[HC{C(Me)2N-Dipp/Ar}2]- (Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl (Dipp); Ar=2,6-dicyclohexylphyenyl (DCHP) or 2,4,6-tricyclohexylphyenyl (TCHP)) have been developed for the kinetic stabilisation of the first europium (II) hydride complexes, [(BDIDCHP)Eu(μ-H)]2, [(BDIDipp/DCHP)Eu(μ-H)]2 and [(BDIDipp/TCHP)Eu(μ-H)]2, respectively. These complexes represent the first step beyond the current lanthanide(II) hydrides that are all based on ytterbium. Tuning the steric profile of β-diketiminate ligands from a symmetrical to unsymmetrical disposition, enhanced solubility and stability in the solution-state. This provides the first opportunity to study the structure and bonding of these novel Eu(II) hydride complexes crystallographically, spectroscopically and computationally, with their preliminary reactivity investigated.

From alkaline earth to coinage metal carboranyls

The β-diketiminato calcium and magnesium complexes, [(BDI)MgnBu] and [(BDI)CaH]2 (BDI = HC{C(Me)NDipp}2; Dipp = 2,6-di-isopropylphenyl), react with ortho-carborane (o-C2B10H12) to provide the respective [(BDI)Ae(o-C2B10H11)] (Ae = Mg or Ca) complexes. While the lighter group 2 species is a monomer with magnesium in a distorted trigonal planar environment, the heavier analogue displays a puckered geometry at calcium in the solid state due to Ca⋯H-B intermolecular interactions. These secondary contacts are, however, readily disrupted upon addition of THF to provide the 4-coordinate monomer, [(BDI)Ca(THF)(o-C2B10H11)]. [(BDI)Mg(o-C2B10H11)] was reacted with [NHCIPrMCl] (NHCIPr = 1,3-bis(isopropyl)imidazol-2-ylidene; M = Cu, Ag, Au) to provide [NHCIPrM(o-C2B10H11)], rare C-bonded examples of coinage metal derivatives of unsubstituted (o-C2B10H11)- and confirming the alkaline earth compounds as viable reagents for the transmetalation of the carboranyl anion.

New kind of electride sandwich complexes based on the cyclooctatetraene ligand M12(η8-C8H8)2M22 (M1 = Na, K and M2 = Ca, Mg): a theoretical study

In the present study, the electronic structures of a series of binuclear sandwich complexes based on the cyclooctatetraene ligand M¹₂(η⁸-C₈H₈)₂M²₂ (M¹ = Na, K and M² = Ca, Mg) are studied theoretically. Each cyclooctatetraene ligand binds with the metal in the η⁸ binding mode. The M²-M² bond length agrees well with the reported bimetallic covalent Ca₂ and Mg₂ bond lengths. The Wiberg bond index (WBI) also indicates the presence of covalent M²-M² bonds, which gives additional stability to the complex. A non-nuclear attractor (NNA) is found in-between the M²-M² bond and the negative Laplacian of the electron density is found at the NNA. Noncovalent interaction (NCI) plot shows that electron density is localized at the M²-M² bond. Based on the performed analysis, we have concluded that the designed sandwich complexes are electrides. We herein report, for the first time, the electride sandwich complexes of the cyclooctatetraene ligand. Due to the presence of a diffuse electron system, the electride complexes exhibit higher values of the static second hyperpolarizability within the range of 2.6 × 10⁵ to 1.4 × 10⁶ a.u. Among the studied complexes, M¹₂(η⁸-C₈H₈)₂Ca₂ exhibit a higher value of static second hyperpolarizability.

Organocalcium Hydride-Catalyzed Intramolecular C(sp3)-H Annulation of Functionalized 2,6-Lutidines

This work reports an intramolecular C(sp³)-H annulation of functionalized 2,6-lutidines catalyzed by an organocalcium hydride [{(^DIPPnacnac)CaH(thf)}₂] (^DIPPnacnac = CH{(CMe)(2,6-ⁱPr₂-C₆H₃N)}₂). This reaction constitutes a streamlined approach for producing a new family of tetrahydro-1,5-naphthyridines and hexahydropyrido[3,2-b]azocines derivatives in good to excellent yields with high atom efficiency and broad substrates scope. A calcium alkyl complex was isolated from the stoichiometric reaction between calcium hydride and the substrate through deprotonation, which was structurally characterized and confirmed as the catalytic intermediate.

Formation and Reactivity of a Hexahydridosilicate [SiH6]2- Coordinated by a Macrocycle-Supported Strontium Cation

The cationic benzyl complex [(Me₄TACD)Sr(CH₂Ph)][A] (Me₄TACD=1,4,7,10‐tetramethyltetraazacyclododecane; A=B(C₆H₃‐3,5‐Me₂)₄) reacted with two equivalents of phenylsilane to give the bridging hexahydridosilicate complex [(Me₄TACD)₂Sr₂(thf)₄(μ‐κ³ : κ³‐SiH₆)][A]₂ (3 a). Rapid phenyl exchange between phenylsilane molecules is assumed to generate monosilane SiH₄ that is trapped by two strontium hydride cations [(Me₄TACD)SrH(thf)_x]⁺. Complex 3 a decomposed in THF at room temperature to give the terminal silanide complex [(Me₄TACD)Sr(SiH₃)(thf)₂][A], with release of H₂. Upon reaction with a weak Brønsted acid, CO₂, and 1,3,5,7‐cyclooctatetraene SiH₄ was released. The reaction of a 1 : 2 mixture of cationic benzyl and neutral dibenzyl complex with phenylsilane gave the trinuclear silanide complex [(Me₄TACD)₃Sr₃(μ₂‐H)₃(μ₃‐SiH₃)₂][A], while ⁿOctSiH₃ led to the trinuclear (n‐octyl)pentahydridosilicate complex [(Me₄TACD)₃Sr₃(μ₂‐H)₃(μ₃‐SiH₅ⁿOct)][A].

Molecular Main Group Metal Hydrides

This review serves to document advances in the synthesis, versatile bonding, and reactivity of molecular main group metal hydrides within Groups 1, 2, and 12-16. Particular attention will be given to the emerging use of said hydrides in the rapidly expanding field of Main Group element-mediated catalysis. While this review is comprehensive in nature, focus will be given to research appearing in the open literature since 2001.

A Structural Diversity of Molecular Alkaline-Earth-Metal Polyphosphides: From Supramolecular Wheel to Zintl Ion

A series of molecular group 2 polyphosphides has been synthesized by using air-stable [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 )] (Cp*=C5 Me5 ) or white phosphorus as polyphosphorus precursors. Different types of group 2 reagents such as organo-magnesium, mono-valent magnesium, and molecular calcium hydride complexes have been investigated to activate these polyphosphorus sources. The organo-magnesium complex [(Dipp BDI-Mg(CH3 ))2 ] (Dipp BDI={[2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 NCMe]2 CH}- ) reacts with [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 )] to give an unprecedented Mg/Fe-supramolecular wheel. Kinetically controlled activation of [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 )] by different mono-valent magnesium complexes allowed the isolation of Mg-coordinated formally mono- and di-reduced products of [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 )]. To obtain the first examples of molecular calcium-polyphosphides, a molecular calcium hydride complex was used to reduce the aromatic cyclo-P5 ring of [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 )]. The Ca-Fe-polyphosphide is also characterized by quantum chemical calculations and compared with the corresponding Mg complex. Moreover, a calcium coordinated Zintl ion (P7 )3- was obtained by molecular calcium hydride mediated P4 reduction.

A mononuclear divalent ytterbium hydrido complex supported by a super-bulky scorpionate ligand

The first mononuclear divalent ytterbium hydride complex [(Tp^Ad,iPr)Yb(H)(THF)] (Tp^Ad,iPr = hydrotris(3-adamantyl-5-isopropyl-pyrazolyl)borate) (2) bearing a terminal hydrido ligand was obtained by hydrogenolysis of the benzyl precursor in hexane. Complex 2 exhibited two different reaction patterns towards allenes: Yb-H addition with cyclohexylallene and deprotonation of 1,1-dimethylallene.

Ytterbium (II) Hydride as a Powerful Multielectron Reductant

A dimeric β-diketiminato ytterbium(II) hydride affects both the two-electron aromatization of 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) and the more challenging two-electron reduction of polyaromatic hydrocarbons, including naphthalene (E⁰ =-2.60 V). Confirmed by Density Functional Theory calculations, these reactions proceed via consecutive polarized Yb-H/C=C insertion and deprotonation steps to provide the respective ytterbium (II) inverse sandwich complexes and hydrogen gas. These observations highlight the ability of a simple ytterbium(II) hydride to act as a powerful two-electron reductant at room temperature without the necessity of an external electron to initiate the reaction and avoiding radicaloid intermediates.

Metal-metal bonded alkaline-earth distannyls

The first families of alkaline-earth stannylides [Ae(SnPh3)2·(thf) x ] (Ae = Ca, x = 3, 1; Sr, x = 3, 2; Ba, x = 4, 3) and [Ae{Sn(SiMe3)3}2·(thf) x ] (Ae = Ca, x = 4, 4; Sr, x = 4, 5; Ba, x = 4, 6), where Ae is a large alkaline earth with direct Ae-Sn bonds, are presented. All complexes have been characterised by high-resolution solution NMR spectroscopy, including 119Sn NMR, and by X-ray diffraction crystallography. The molecular structures of [Ca(SnPh3)2·(thf)4] (1'), [Sr(SnPh3)2·(thf)4] (2'), [Ba(SnPh3)2·(thf)5] (3'), 4, 5 and [Ba{Sn(SiMe3)3}2·(thf)5] (6'), most of which crystallised as higher thf solvates than their parents 1-6, were established by XRD analysis; the experimentally determined Sn-Ae-Sn' angles lie in the range 158.10(3)-179.33(4)°. In a given series, the 119Sn NMR chemical shifts are slightly deshielded upon descending group 2 from Ca to Ba, while the silyl-substituted stannyls are much more shielded than the phenyl ones (δ 119Sn/ppm: 1', -133.4; 2', -123.6; 3', -95.5; 4, -856.8; 5, -848.2; 6', -792.7). The bonding and electronic properties of these complexes were also analysed by DFT calculations. The combined spectroscopic, crystallographic and computational analysis of these complexes provide some insight into the main features of these unique families of homoleptic complexes. A comprehensive DFT study (Wiberg bond index, QTAIM and energy decomposition analysis) points at a primarily ionic Ae-Sn bonding, with a small covalent contribution, in these series of complexes; the Sn-Ae-Sn' angle is associated with a flat energy potential surface around its minimum, consistent with the broad range of values determined by experimental and computational methods.

Synthesis and reactivity of alkaline-earth stannanide complexes by hydride-mediated distannane metathesis and organostannane dehydrogenation

The synthesis of heteroleptic complexes with calcium- and magnesium-tin bonds is described. The dimeric β-diketiminato calcium hydride complex, [(BDI)Ca(μ-H)]2 (ICa) reacts with Ph3Sn-SnPh3 to provide the previously reported μ2-H bridged calcium stannanide dimer, [(BDI)2Ca2(SnPh3)(μ-H)] (3). Computational assessment of this reaction supports a mechanism involving a hypervalent stannate intermediate formed by nucleophilic attack of hydride on the distannane. Monomeric calcium stannanides, [(BDI)Ca(SnPh3)·OPPh3] (8·OPPh3) and [(BDI)Ca(SnPh3)·TMTHF] (8·TMTHF, TMTHF = 2,2,5,5-tetramethyltetrahydrofuran) were obtained from ICa and Ph3Sn-SnPh3, after addition OPPh3 or TMTHF. Both complexes were also synthesised by deprotonation of Ph3SnH by ICa in the presence of the Lewis base. The calcium and magnesium THF adducts, [(BDI)Ca(SnPh3)·THF2] (8·THF2) and [(BDI)Mg(SnPh3)·THF] (9·THF), were similarly prepared from [(BDI)Ca(μ-H)·(THF)]2 (ICa·THF2) or [(BDI)Mg(μ-H)]2 (IMg) and Ph3SnH. An excess of THF or TMTHF was essential in order to obtain 8·TMTHF, 8·THF2 and 9·THF in high yields whilst avoiding redistribution of the phenyl-tin ligand. The resulting Ae-Sn complexes were used as a source of [Ph3Sn]- in salt metathesis, to provide the known tristannane Ph3Sn-Sn(t-Bu)2-SnPh3 (11). Nucleophilic addition or insertion with N,N'-di-iso-propylcarbodiimide provided the stannyl-amidinate complexes, [(BDI)Mg{(iPrN)2CSnPh3}] (12) and [(BDI)Ca{(iPrN)2CSnPh3}·L] (13·TMTHF, 13·THF, L = TMTHF, THF). The reactions and products were monitored and characterised by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, whilst for compounds 8, 9, 12, and 13·THF, the X-ray crystal structures are presented and discussed.

Soft interactions with hard Lewis acids: generation of mono- and dicationic alkaline-earth metal arene-complexes by direct oxidation

The synthesis of the first unsupported dicationic arene complexes of calcium and strontium [(η⁶-HMB)AE(oDFB)₄]²⁺ is reported (HMB = hexamethylbenzene; AE = alkaline earth metal; oDFB = ortho-difluorobenzene). They were prepared by direct oxidation of the elemental metals employing the ligand-forming radical cation salt [HMB][WCA] as an oxidant (WCA = [Al(OR^F)₄] or [μF-{Al(OR^F)₃}₂]; R^F = C(CF₃)₃). In addition, monocationic η⁶-HMB complexes of calcium, strontium and barium supported by coordination of the monodentate anion [F-Al(OR^F)₃]^- are reported. In all examples, almost undistorted η⁶-HMB coordination is observed with rather short M-arene_centroid distances approaching those observed with the isoelectronic but negatively charged pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligand. The structure and bonding, thermodynamic stability and Lewis acidity (fluoride/hydride ion affinities, FIA/HIA) of the generated complexes were assessed by DFT methods. It followed that the gaseous dications [(η⁶-HMB)AE(oDFB)₄]²⁺ are extremely hard Lewis acids that retain FIAs close to superacidity in solution.

Calcium stannyl formation by organostannane dehydrogenation

Reaction of the dimeric calcium hydride, [(BDI)CaH]₂ (1), with Ph₃SnH ensues with elimination of H₂ to provide [(BDI)Ca-μ₂-H-(SnPh₃)Ca(BDI)] (3) and [(BDI)Ca(SnPh₃)]₂ (4) alongside dismutation to Ph₄Sn, H₂ and Sn(0).
