Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination in food products significantly threatens human health, necessitating a reliable and sensitive detection method. This study aims to develop a simple, low-cost, and effective electrochemical immunoassay method for detecting DON based on the nickel‑iron bimetallic Prussian blue analog (NiFe PBA). The NiFe PBA nanozymes with high peroxidase-like activity were synthesized using an environmentally friendly chemical precipitation method. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), the current change of thionine oxidation initiated by NiFe PBA nanozymes can be exploited to diagnose DON. Under optimal conditions, the proposed method achieved quantitative detection of DON in the range of 10-107 pg mL-1 with a detection limit of 4.5 pg mL-1 (S/N = 3), demonstrating excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. In addition, the DON immunosensor provides satisfactory results for the detection in real samples, demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed sensor in detecting of DON in such products.

Abstract
The use of Chloramphenicol (CAP), a potent antibiotic with broad-spectrum capabilities in food-producing animals has been restricted by the European Union and several other countries due to its severe side effects. Thus, CAP must be detected quickly and sensitively. In this investigation, the preparation of SrTiO3 nanoparticles was carried out utilizing a hydrothermal technique. The as-synthesized strontium titanate was decorated on the graphene oxide (SrTiO3/GO) using an ultrasonication method. An electrochemical sensor was developed by employing a modified electrode consisting of SrTiO3/GO, which can accurately detect CAP in food samples. The synergistic effect of SrTiO3 and GO could improve the peak current response. Remarkably, the SrTiO3/GO-modified glassy carbon electrode has a LOD and sensitivity of 6.08 µM nM and 2.771 µA·μM-1·cm-2, respectively. This modified electrode was evaluated in food samples and had an outstanding reaction with a high percentage of recovery, which makes it a potential electrocatalyst for CAP detection.

Abstract
MicroRNA-21 (miRNA-21) is a significant biomarker for the development and progression of diverse cancers but is present in relatively low concentrations. Detecting such low-abundance molecules accurately can be challenging, especially in early-stage cancers where the concentration may be even lower. Herein, a self-calibration biosensing platform based on 3D novel MNPs-IL-rGO-AuNPs nanocomposites was successfully established for the ultrasensitive detection of miRNA-21. Duplex-specific nuclease (DSN) was introduced to recognize perfectly matched duplexes and trigger target recycling, enhancing the specificity and sensitivity of the biosensor. DSN-assisted target recycling, in conjunction with magnetic separation enrichment and high-performance MNPs-IL-rGO-AuNPs, collectively formed a multiple-signal amplification strategy. The obtained biosensor could output dual signals in both electrochemical and fluorescent modes, enabling self-correcting detection to enhance the accuracy. The obtained dual-mode biosensor prepared exhibited a wide detection range from 5 fM to 100 nM with a remarkably low LOD of 1.601 fM. It accomplished the sensitive evaluation of miRNA-21 in total RNA extracted from various human cancer cell lines and normal cell lines. Additionally, the greatly satisfactory outcomes in the analysis of human serum samples suggested that the proposed biosensor was a powerful screening candidate in early clinical diagnosis of cancer.

Abstract
This research work aims to explore the potential usage of post-consumer waste expanded polystyrene (EPS) for the fabrication of self-standing electrodes by incorporating reduced graphene oxide (rGO) into it via a facile cost-effective mechanical mixing process. The π-π interaction between the expanded polystyrene and rGO is evidenced from FT-IR and Raman analysis. The elevated thermal stability of the EPS/rGO composite from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) further confirms the interconnection between the rGO and EPS. This π-π stacking interaction between the rGO and the polystyrene molecules present in the polymer matrix enable the composite material to be interconnected throughout which is beneficial for the charge transport process. The symmetric coin cell supercapacitor fabricated using the EPS/rGO composite electrode can be operated with a high operating voltage of 1.6 V in aqueous KOH and Na2SO4 electrolytes. The devices fabricated with KOH and Na2SO4 electrolytes deliver an areal capacitance of 11.9 mF cm-2 and 10 mF cm-2 at the discharge current density of 0.1 mA cm-2. Further, the devices fabricated with the KOH and Na2SO4 electrolytes demonstrated remarkable rate capability of 87.1% and 99.5% after 10 000 continuous charge discharge cycles. This facile method of preparation without consuming energy or polluting the environment is a novel approach which can be scaled-up to large-scale fabrication of self-standing plastic electrodes for low-cost energy storage applications.

Abstract
Carbohydrate antigen 15-3 (CA15-3) is an important biomarker for early diagnosis of breast cancer. Herein, a label-free electrochemical immunosensor was built based on three-dimensional (3D) urchin-like core-shell Au@PdCu nanocrystals (labeled Au@PdCu NCs) for highly sensitive detection of CA15-3, where K3[Fe(CN)6] behaved as an electroactive probe. The Au@PdCu NCs were synthesized by a simple one-pot wet-chemical approach and the morphology, structures, and electrocatalytic property were investigated by several techniques. The Au@PdCu NCs prepared worked as electrode material to anchor more antibodies and as signal magnification material by virtue of its exceptional catalytic property. The developed biosensor exhibited a wide linear detection range from 0.1 to 300 U mL-1 and a low limit of detection (0.011 U mL-1, S/N = 3) for determination of CA15-3 under the optimal conditions. The established biosensing platform exhibits some insights for detecting other tumor biomarkers in clinical assays and early diagnosis.

Abstract
A new ultrasensitive sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor has been successfully constructed to quantitatively detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) using blackberry-like mesoporous bismuth-based nanospheres NaBiOF (NBOF NSs) inlaid with Pt nanodots (NDs) (BiPt NSs) as the antibody capture and signal-amplifying probe. The growth of Pt NDs inside the holes of NBOF NSs formed the nanozyme inlay outside NBOF NSs, greatly increasing the specific surface area and exposure of the catalytic active sites by minimizing the particle size of the Pt to nanodot scale. Such a blackberry-shaped heterojunction structure of BiPt NSs was well-suited to antibody capture and improved the catalytic performance of BiPt NSs in reducing H2O2, amplifying the signal, and yielding highly sensitive detection of CEA. The use of Au nanoparticle-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Au@MWCNTs) as the electrode substrates significantly enhanced the electron transfer behavior over the electrode surface, further increasing the conductivity and sensitivity of the immunosensor. Remarkably, good compatibility with human body fluid was achieved using the newly developed BiPt-based immunosensor resulting from the favorable biocompatibility and stability of both BiPt NSs and Au@MWCNTs. Benefiting from the double signal amplification strategy and the high biocompatibility, the immunosensor responded linearly to CEA in a wide range from 50 fg/mL to 100 ng/ml with an extremely low detection limit of 3.52 fg/mL (S/N = 3). The excellent detection properties of this new immunosensor were evidenced by the satisfactory selectivity, reproducibility, and stability obtained, as well as the reliable and precise determination of CEA in actual human blood samples. This work provides a new strategy for the early clinical diagnosis of cancer. Novel blackberry-like mesoporous NaBiOF nanospheres with Pt nanodot inlay were successfully usedto construct a sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor for the ultra-sensitive detection ofcarcinoembryonic antigen in human blood plasma based on a remarkable signal amplification strategy.

Abstract
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic, autoimmune disease that primarily affects connective tissue. SSc can be classified into limited cutaneous (lSSc) and diffuse cutaneous (dSSc). Oncostatin M receptor (sOSMR) is an important inflammatory biomarker expressed in the serum of patients with autoimmune diseases. A nanoengineered immunosensor surface was developed. The biosensor was composed of a conductive layer of polypyrrole, electrodeposited gold nanoparticles, and sOSMR protein for anti-human OSMR monoclonal antibody biorecognition. The electrochemical response evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated the detection of the target analyte present in clinical samples from lSSc and dSSc patients. The voltammetric anodic shift for lSSc specimens was 82.7% ± 0.9-93.6% ± 3.2, and dSSc specimens was 118.7 ± 2.6 to 379.6 ± 2.6, revealing a differential diagnostic character for SSc subtypes. The sensor platform was adapted for identifying sOSMR, using anti-OSMR antibodies as bioreceptors. With a linear response range estimated from 0.005 to 500 pg mL-1 and a limit of detection of 0.42 pg mL-1, the sensing strategy demonstrated high sensitivity in identifying the human OSMR protein in clinical samples. The proposed biosensor is a promising and innovative tool for SSc-related biomarker research.

Abstract
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a cancer marker used for monitoring cancer treatment. Herein, a label-free electrochemical immunosensor for determining CEA concentration composed of the thiolated chitosan (tCHI) and the doped poly(N-methylaniline) (dPNMA) is proposed. The tCHI served as a support matrix for the immobilization of CEA antibodies (anti-CEA) and was prepared by using 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) as a grafting agent on chitosan (CHI). The excellent electrical conductivity of the dPNMA was utilized as an electron transfer layer for the proposed immunosensor. The successful preparation of the tCHI was confirmed by the attenuated-total reflection Fourier transform spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to illustrate the performance of the proposed immunosensor. The determination of CEA concentration was relied on the decrease in the DPV current response with increasing CEA concentration from the creation of the antigen-antibody immunocomplex. The proposed immunosensor demonstrated a broad concentration range of 0.01 to 30 ng mL-1 with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 ng mL-1. In addition, the present sensor exhibited excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and long-term stability, suggesting its potential use to determine CEA in clinical immunoassay.

Abstract
Nanomaterials have been explored in the sensing research field in the last decades. Mainly, 3D nanomaterials have played a vital role in advancing biomedical applications, and less attention was given to their application in the field of biosensors for pathogenic virus detection. The versatility and tunability of a wide range of nanomaterials contributed to the development of a rapid, portable biosensor platform. In this review, we discuss 3D nanospheres, one of the classes of nanostructured materials with a homogeneous and dense matrix wherein a guest substance is carried within the matrix or on its surface. This review is segmented based on the type of nanosphere and their elaborative application in various sensing techniques. We emphasize the concept of signal amplification strategies using different nanosphere structures constructed from a polymer, carbon, silica, and metal-organic framework (MOF) for rendering high-level sensitivity of virus detection. We also briefly elaborate on some challenges related to the further development of nanosphere-based biosensors, including the toxicity issue of the used nanomaterial and the commercialization hurdle.

Abstract
Here, we report on a new automated electrochemical process for the production of graphene oxide (GO) from graphite though electrochemical exfoliation. The effects of the electrolyte and applied voltage were investigated and optimized. The morphology, structure and composition of the electrochemically exfoliated GO (EGO) were probed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), FTIR spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Important metrics such as the oxygen content (25.3 at.%), defect density (ID/IG = 0.85) and number of layers of the formed EGO were determined. The EGO was also compared with the GO prepared using the traditional chemical method, demonstrating the effectiveness of the automated electrochemical process. The electrochemical properties of the EGO, CGO and other carbon-based materials were further investigated and compared. The automated electrochemical exfoliation of natural graphite powder demonstrated in the present study does not require any binders; it is facile, cost-effective and easy to scale up for a large-scale production of graphene-based nanomaterials for various applications.

Abstract
Point-of-care testing (POCT) is an ideal testing format for the rapid and on-site detection of analytes in patients, and facilitates disease diagnosis and monitoring. Molecular recognition elements are required for the specific detection of analytes, and biosensors that use antibodies as the molecular recognition elements are called immunosensors. Traditional immunosensors such as sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) require complicated procedures to form immunocomplexes consisting of detection antibodies, analytes, and capture antibodies. They also require long incubation times, washing procedures, and large and expensive specialized equipment that must be operated by laboratory technicians. Immunosensors for POCT should be systems that use relatively small pieces of equipment and do not require special training. In this review, to help in the construction of immunosensors for POCT, we have summarized the recently reported strategies for simplifying the operation, incubation, and washing procedures. We focused on the optical and electrochemical detection principles of immunosensors, compared the strategies for operation, sensitivity, and detection devices and discussed the ideal system. Combining detection devices that can be fabricated inexpensively and strategies that enable simplification of operation procedures and enhance sensitivities will contribute to the development of immunosensors for POCT.

Abstract
Noble metals act as nanozymes that can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) by catalysis to induce apoptosis of tumor cells for cancer therapy. But they are easy to aggregate, which will affect their further application. Carbon materials are often used as the carrier of noble metals to improve their catalytic performance. However, designing a composite structure to build an efficient carbon/noble metal hybrid nanozyme with high catalytic performance for tumor therapy is still a significant challenge. In this work, a core-in-shell structure nanozyme composed of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) embedded in nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanoshells (AuNPs@N-HCNs) were fabricated, which exhibited peroxidase-like (POD-like) and oxidase-like (OXD-like) activity. Compared with core-out-of-shell structure composite, the AuNPs@N-HCNs showed a better ability to generate ROS to kill tumor cells. Furthermore, AuNPs@N-HCNs also exhibited satisfactory photothermal conversion properties, which helped build a platform for photothermal therapy. Meanwhile, the enzyme activity produced by AuNPs@N-HCNs increased significantly under light irradiation. Comparing the size of AuNPs in carbon shell, 15 nm AuNPs were better than 2 nm in both enzyme-like activities and in vivo therapeutic effect. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that under the synergistic effect of light-enhancing nanozyme catalysis and photothermal therapy, AuNPs@N-HCNs could induce cancer cell apoptosis and destroy tumors effectively, which provided evidence for the feasibility of tumor catalytic-photothermal treatment.

Abstract
Current methods for the early diagnosis of cancer can be invasive and costly. In recent years, exosomes have been recognized as potential biomarkers for cancer diagnostics. The common methods for quantitative detection of exosomes, such as nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) and flow cytometry, rely on large-scale instruments and complex operation, with results not specific for cancer. Herein, we present a tri-channel electrochemical immunobiosensor for enzyme-free and label-free detecting carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and cytokeratin 19 fragments (Cyfra21-1) from exosomes for specific early diagnosis of lung cancer. The electrochemical immunobiosensor showed good selectivity and stability. Under optimum experimental conditions, the linear ranges were from 10-3 to 10 ng/mL for CEA, 10-4 to 102 ng/mL for NSE, and 10-3 to 102 ng/mL for Cyfra21-1, and a detection limit down to 10-4 ng/mL was achieved. Furthermore, we performed exosome analysis in three kinds of lung cancer. The results showed a distinct expression level of exosomal markers in different types. These works provide insight into a promising alternative for the quantification of exosomal markers in specific diseases in the following clinical bioassays.

Abstract
A new label-free electrochemical immunosensor was constructed for quantitative detection of procalcitonin (PCT), by employing AuPtCu nanodendrites (AuPtCu NDs, prepared by a one-pot solvothermal method) and graphene-wrapped Co nanoparticles encapsulated in 3D N-doped carbon nanobrushes (G-Co@ NCNBs), obtained by self-catalyzed chemical vapor deposition as immune-sensing platform. Impressively, the home-made nanocomposite enlarged the highly accessible active sites and promoted the mass/electron transport, in turn showing the efficient synergistic catalysis towards H2O2 reduction, combined by greatly increasing the loading capacity of the PCT antibody (Ab). The as-constructed sensor displayed a dynamic linear range of 0.0001 ~ 100 ng mL-1 along with an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD = 0.011 pg mL-1, S/N = 3) and was further explored for determination of PCT in a diluted serum sample with acceptable results. The sensor provides some valuable guidelines for bioassay and early diagnosis of sepsis.

Abstract
In this work, we design an immunosensor for zearalenone (ZEN) detection with PEI-rGO/Pt@Au NRs nanocomposite as the modification material. PEI-rGO/Pt@Au NRs nanocomposite have good stability, conductivity and a large specific surface area, so they are chosen as the substrate material for the modified electrode, which is beneficial in improving the detection performance of the sensor. When antibody binds to ZEN, the current signal decreases, and the response signal changes after ZEN incubation, recorded by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) methods. Under the optimised conditions, the electrochemical response of the constructed immunosensor shows a linear relation to a wide concentration range from 1 pg/mL to 1 × 106 pg/mL with a detection limit of 0.02 pg/mL. Additionally, the proposed electrochemical immunosensor has high selectivity, good stability and great potential for the trace detection of ZEN in real samples.

Abstract
An ultrasensitive label-free electrochemical immunosensor was fabricated for quantitative detection of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG). The N/O co-doped three-dimensional hierarchical porous graphitic (THPG) carbon was synthesized by a one-step synthesis of polyaniline hydrogel, and followed by simple carbonization and chemical activation procedures. Because of the unique structure design, the obtained THPG carbon networks possess an ultra-large specific surface area of 4859 m2 g-1 along with a class of highly graphitic carbons. The results offer an enormous surface area and excellent electrical conductivity for label-free electrochemical immunosensing of probiotic L. rhamnosus strain. Under optimal conditions, the immunosensor showed a good linear relationship between peak current and concentration of LGG (R2 = 0.9976), with a detection limit of 2 CFU mL-1. Furthermore, this label-free immunosensor also shows good specificity, long-term stability, and reliability, and could be applied to detect probiotic LGG in dairy products and drinks with satisfactory results. The present protocol was shown to be quite promising for practical screening and functional evaluation of probiotic products containing LGG. A ultrasensitive label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on THPG carbon was fabricated for detection of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG.

Abstract
The cost-effective construction of self-designed conductive graphene patterns is crucial to the fabrication of graphene-based electrochemical devices. Here, a label-free carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) electrochemical immunosensor is developed based on the surface engineering of a laser-induced graphene (LIG)/Au electrode. The LIG electrode was produced with a smart and inexpensive 450 nm semiconductor laser through three electrode patterns under ambient conditions. Then the LIG/Au electrode was organized by conformal anchoring of Au nanoparticles (NPs) on the LIG work area using chloroauric acid as the precursor. Good electrochemical activity with improved conductivity of the LIG/Au electrode was obtained under optimized conditions of laser intensity, carving depth, and chlorogenic acid dosage, to name a few. The LIG/Au electrode was carbonylated based on Au-S∼COOH using 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA). The antibody was covalently bound on the work area to form a label-free immunosensor. The constructed immunosensor shows high sensitivity with a good response in the range of low concentrations from 0.01 to 100 ng mL-1, low detection limit (5.0 pg mL-1), high selectivity compared with some possible interference, and can be applied in a bovine serum solution without the need of sample labeling and pretreatment. Moreover, the immunosensor is mechanically flexible with minimal change in signal output after bending at different angles. It shows an easy and green electrode preparation method that combines 3D porous structures of graphene, uniform immobilization of Au NPs, binder-free, easy covalent binding of an antibody, and good mechanical properties. Hence, the present method has great potential for applications involving electrochemical biosensors.

Abstract
The dispersed gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have weak photothermal effect in near-infrared (NIR) region. After the addition of cysteine, the AuNPs are aggregated due to the electrostatic interaction and then exhibited strong photothermal effect. At present of copper ion (Cu2+), the cysteine was catalytically oxidized into cystine, leading to the inhibition of the aggregation of AuNPs and the photothermal effect decreased. Based on this, a simple photothermal assay can be developed for Cu2+ detection using a common thermometer as readout. The change of the temperature (ΔT) of the system has a linear relationship with Cu2+ in the range of 10-300 nM with a detection limit of 7.4 nM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, through labeling the detection antibody in immunoassay with CuO nanoparticles as the source of Cu2+, a convenient photothermal immunoassay can be developed. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), an important biomarker for cancer screening, was chosen as the model target because the rise of CEA level is widely present in cancer blood serum. Under the optimized conditions, ΔT has a linear relationship with CEA concentration in the range of 3.0-48.0 ng/mL. The detection limit is 1.3 ng/mL. The proposed method had been applied to detect CEA in serum samples with good agreement with the reference method used in hospital.

Abstract
Bienzymatic systems are often used with electrochemical affinity biosensors to achieve high signal levels and/or low background levels. It is important to select two enzymes whose reactions do not exhibit mutual interference but have similar optimal conditions. Here, we report a sensitive electrochemical immunosensor based on a bienzymatic system consisting of β-galactosidase (Gal, a hydrolase enzyme) and flavin adenine dinucleotide-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (FAD-GDH, a redox enzyme). Both enzymes showed high activities at neutral pH, the reactions catalyzed by them did not exhibit mutual interference, and the electrochemical-enzymatic redox cycling based on FAD-GDH coupled with enzymatic amplification by Gal enabled high signal amplification. Among the three amino-hydroxy-naphthalenes and 4-aminophenol (potential Gal products), 4-amino-1-naphthol showed the highest signal amplification. Glucose, as an electro-inactive, stable reducing agent for redox cycling, helped in achieving low background levels. Our bienzymatic system could detect parathyroid hormone at a detection limit of ∼0.2 pg mL-1, implying that it can be used for highly sensitive electrochemical detection of parathyroid hormone and other biomarkers in human serum.

Abstract
Labeling with redox reporter is often required in developing electrochemical bioassay for most proteins or nucleic acid biomarkers. Herein, a label-free ratiometric immunosensing platform is firstly developed by integrating the antibody-conjugated nanochannels with a smart modified electrode. The electrode modifier is the composite of C60, tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOA+) and Prussian blue (PB). Cyclic voltammograms of the ultimate C60-TOA+/PB modified electrode exhibited two pairs of peaks at 0.15 V and -0.13 V, ascribing to the redox of PB and C60, respectively. With the addition of K3[Fe(CN)6] in the electrolyte solution, the peaks of PB decreased due to the adsorption of [Fe(CN)6]3- while the peaks of C60 increased because of the formation of the ternary complex (TC) C60-TOA+-[Fe(CN)6]3-. As a result, the peak current ratio IPB/ITC decreased gradually with the increment of the concentration of [Fe(CN)6]3-. For the nanochannels-based immunosensing platform, the steric hindrance of the bioconjugated nanochannels varied with the loading amount of the target CA125, and thus [Fe(CN)6]3- passing through the channels was quantitatively affected. And the higher CA125 level was, the less [Fe(CN)6]3- concentration was. And thus, the ratio IPB/ITC monitored at the C60-TOA+/PB modified electrode increased with the increase of the concentration of CA125. The ratiometric immunoassay featured a linear calibration range from 1.0 U mL-1 to 100 U mL-1 with a low detection limit of 0.86 U mL-1. In addition, the ratiometric immunosensing platform demonstrated good specificity and stability as well as acceptable accuracy in overcoming the effect of electrode passivation which was an inherent problem of electroanalysis.

Abstract
For immobilization and signal amplification of the probes, it is feasible and promising by using porous nanomaterials as nanocarriers. Herein, a novel label-free electrochemical immmunosensor was efficiently designed for ultrasensitive detection of procalcitonin (PCT). The immunosensor was prepared by using porous silica-coated gold nanorods (Au NRs@m-SiO2) to load electroactive dye thionine (Thi) on the electrode surface. Apart from the improved electrical conductivity, the porous feature highly increased the loading amount of Thi to boost the detection signals, while the good biocompatibility and protective microenvironment are beneficial to the largely improved stability for the target. For quantification of PCT, the developed immunosensor exhibited a good linear relationship in the antigen concentration range of 0.001-100 ng mL-1 with an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD, 0.39 pg mL-1, S/N = 3). Moreover, the built platform was successfully applied to such assay in human serum samples. The research provides some valuable guidelines for clinical screening and diagnosis of other biomarkers.
