Structure-directing role of CH⋯X (X = C, N, S, Cl) interactions in three ionic cobalt complexes: X-ray investigation and DFT study using QTAIM Vr predictor to eliminate the effect of pure Coulombic forces

Three cobalt complexes, namely [CoIII(HL1)2(N3)2]ClO4 (1), [CoIII(L2)(HL2)(N3)]ClO4·1.5H2O (2), and [CoIII(L3)(HL3)(NCS)]2 [CoIICl2(NCS)2] (3), where HL1 = 2-(3-(dimethylamino)propyliminomethyl)-6-methoxyphenol, HL2 = 2-(2-(dimethylamino)ethyliminomethyl)-4,6-dichlorophenol, and HL3 = 2-(2-(dimethylamino)ethyliminomethyl)-6-methoxyphenol, as potential tridentate N2O-donor Schiff base ligands, were synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. All three were found to be monomeric ionic complexes. Complex 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn, whereas both complexes 2 and 3 crystallize in triclinic space groups, P1̄. Further, 1 and 2 are cationic complexes of octahedral cobalt(iii) with perchlorate anions, whereas complex 3 contains a cationic part of octahedral cobalt(iii) and an anionic part of tetrahedral cobalt(ii). Hydrogen-bonding interactions involving aromatic and aliphatic CH bonds as H-bond donors and the pseudo-halide co-ligands as H-bond acceptors were established, which are important aspects governing the X-ray packing. These interactions were analyzed theoretically using the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and non-covalent interaction plot (NCI plot) analyses. Moreover, energy decomposition analysis (EDA) was performed to analyze the stabilization of the complexes in terms of the electrostatic, dispersion, and correlation forces.

An insight into the hydrogen bonding, halogen bonding and chalcogen bonding interactions in manganese(iii) complexes with N2O2donor salicylidine Schiff base ligands

Four manganese(iii) complexes, [MnL¹(H₂O)₂]ClO₄·H₂O (1), [MnL²(H₂O)₂]ClO₄ (2), [MnL³(DMSO)(H₂O)]ClO₄ (3) and [MnL⁴(DMSO)(H₂O)]ClO₄ (4), where H₂L¹ = N,N'-bis(5-bromosalicylidene)-1,3-diaminopropane, H₂L² = 2,2-dimethyl-N,N-bis(3-methyloxysalicylidene)-1,3-diaminopropane, H₂L³ = N,N'-bis(5-chlorosalicylidene)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-diaminopropane and H₂L⁴ = 2-hydroxy-N,N'-bis(3-ethyloxysalicylidene)-1,3-diaminopropane are tetradentate N₂O₂-donor ligands and DMSO = dimethyl sulfoxide, have been synthesized and characterised by elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. All are monomeric complexes. Complex 1 crystallises in orthorhombic space group P2₁2₁2₁, complex 3 crystallises in triclinic space group P-1, whereas complexes 2 and 4 crystallize in monoclinic space groups, C2/c and C2/m respectively. In all the complexes, manganese(iii) has a six-coordinated pseudo-octahedral geometry in which imine nitrogen atoms and phenolate oxygen atoms of the deprotonated di-Schiff base constitute the equatorial plane. In complexes 1 and 2, water molecules are present in the fifth and sixth coordination sites in the axial positions while in complexes 3 and 4 they are occupied by one water and one DMSO. The coordinated water molecules initiate hydrogen-bonded networks in all complexes. DFT calculations have been carried out to analyze two aspects of these complexes viz. the formation of halogen (HaB) and chalcogen bonding (ChB) interactions in complexes 1 and 3 where the electron donor is the perchlorate anion and the acceptor either bromine or chlorine atoms for the HaBs and the sulfur atom of the coordinated DMSO for the ChB. In addition, other intermolecular effects are discussed in the solid state for complexes 1, 2 and 4, where the hydrogen atoms of the coordinated water molecules interact with the electron rich cavities formed by the phenolate and alkyloxy oxygen atoms of the Schiff-base ligand.

The importance of tetrel bonding interactions with carbon in two arrestive iso-structural Cd(ii)-Salen coordination complexes: a comprehensive DFT overview in crystal engineering

In this article, we describe the serendipitous synthesis of two remarkable iso-structural Cd(ii)-Salen complexes [L₂Cd₄(OAc)₂(NCS)₂] in the presence of H₂L and NaSCN {where L = L¹ (N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,2-diaminopropane) and L = L² (N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-ethylenediamine) in 1 and 2, respectively}. The complexes were characterized by using elemental analysis, SEM-EDX, PXRD, spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. The X-ray crystal structure revealed that both complexes crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn, with unit cell parameters: a = 20.758(6), b = 11.022(3), c = 21.396(6) Å, V = 4895(2) ų, and Z = 4. The inner N₂O₂ and outer O₄ compartments are essentially occupied by two different Cd(ii) metal ions resulting from the de-protonated form of the ligand (L^2-) with the Cd(1) metal ions adopting a capped octahedral geometry. At the same time, Cd(2) assumes a distorted trigonal prismatic geometry. The solid-state crystal structure involves various non-covalent supramolecular interactions delineated by Hirshfeld Surface and 2D fingerprint plot analysis. Noteworthily, interesting S⋯H, O⋯H, and N⋯H contacts were observed, which have identical percentages in both complexes. The sparse tetrel bonding interactions in the complex, involving the CH₃ group, were evaluated in a new dimension of DFT. We observed this privileged bonding landscape that leads to the formation of self-assembled dimers in the crystal complexes. DFT-based MEP, RDG surface, NBO, and QTAIM/NCI plot investigation quantified such unique tetrel bonding interactions.

The tetrel bonding role in supramolecular aggregation of lead(II) acetate and a thiosemicarbazide derivative

A new Pb^II coordination complex [PbL(OAc)], which was readily synthesized from a mixture of Pb(OAc)₂·3H₂O and 1-(pyridin-2-yl)benzylidene-4-phenylthiosemicarbazide (HL) is reported. The crystal structure analysis of [PbL(OAc)] showed that the Pb^II cation is N,N',S-chelated by the tridentate pincer-type ligand L and by the oxygen atoms of the acetate anion. In addition, the metal centre forms Pb...O and Pb...S tetrel bonds with an adjacent complex molecule, yielding a 1D zigzag polymeric chain, which is reinforced by N-H...O hydrogen bonds and π...π interactions. These chains are interlinked by C-H...py non-covalent interactions, realized between one of the acetate hydrogen atoms and the pyridine rings. According to the Hirshfeld surface analysis, the crystal packing is mainly characterized by intermolecular H...H, H...C and H...O contacts, followed by H...N, H...S, C...C, C...N, Pb...H, Pb...O and Pb...S contacts. The FTIR and ¹H NMR spectra of [PbL(OAc)] testify to the deprotonation of the parent ligand HL, while the acetate ligand exhibits an anisobidentate coordination mode as established by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy. Lastly, theoretical calculations at the PBE0-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory have been used to analyze and characterize the Pb...O and Pb...S tetrel bonds observed in the crystal of [PbL(OAc)], using a combination of QTAIM (Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules) and NCIPlot (Non-Covalent Interaction Plot) computational tools.

Construction of 2D Interdigitated Polyrotaxane Layers and their Transformation to a 3D Polyrotaxane by a Photocycloaddition Reaction between Wheels

Following the pioneering work of Sauvage and Stoddart on rotaxanes, construction of higher dimensional polyrotaxanes in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) via a modified protocol is challenging. We present the formation of a two-dimensional (2D) polyrotaxane and its conversion to a three-dimensional (3D) polyrotaxane MOF via a photoreaction between interdigitated "olefin wheels". For this purpose, a 2-fold entangled 2D MOF [Pb₂(bpp)(sdc)₂] (1), showing a 2D + 2D → 2D polyrotaxane motif, has been synthesized from the solvothermal reaction of lead(II) nitrate, 3,3'-stilbenedicarboxylic acid (H₂sdc) containing an olefin group, and 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)piperazine (bpp). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 revealed that the adjacent entangled 2D layers are interdigitated, with the separation of 3.72 Å between C═C bond pairs in adjacent layers satisfying Schmidt's criteria for the occurrence of a [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction. Irradiation of the single crystals of 1 under UV light resulted in formation of a 3D polyrotaxane, [Pb₂(bpp)(rctt-tccb)]_n (2), due to a [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction between two wheels via a single-crystal to single-crystal transformation. The photocycloaddition and partial thermal cleavage reaction between 1 and 2 were confirmed by ¹H NMR and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) in solution and the solid state, respectively. The present approach could contribute to the understanding of the construction of higher dimensional polyrotaxanes which are not accessible by the traditional routes.

Not Only Hydrogen Bonds: Other Noncovalent Interactions

In this review, we provide a consistent description of noncovalent interactions, covering most groups of the Periodic Table. Different types of bonds are discussed using their trivial names. Moreover, the new name “Spodium bonds” is proposed for group 12 since noncovalent interactions involving this group of elements as electron acceptors have not yet been named. Excluding hydrogen bonds, the following noncovalent interactions will be discussed: alkali, alkaline earth, regium, spodium, triel, tetrel, pnictogen, chalcogen, halogen, and aerogen, which almost covers the Periodic Table entirely. Other interactions, such as orthogonal interactions and π-π stacking, will also be considered. Research and applications of σ-hole and π-hole interactions involving the p-block element is growing exponentially. The important applications include supramolecular chemistry, crystal engineering, catalysis, enzymatic chemistry molecular machines, membrane ion transport, etc. Despite the fact that this review is not intended to be comprehensive, a number of representative works for each type of interaction is provided. The possibility of modeling the dissociation energies of the complexes using different models (HSAB, ECW, Alkorta-Legon) was analyzed. Finally, the extension of Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rules to noncovalent is proposed.

An insight into the non-covalent Pb⋯S and S⋯S interactions in the solid-state structure of a hemidirected lead(ii) complex

A hemi-directed copper(ii)/lead(ii) complex has been synthesized and characterized. The energy of chalcogen–chalcogen and tetrel bonding interactions in this complex was analyzed by DFT calculations.

Relevant π-hole tetrel bonding interactions in ethyl 2-triazolyl-2-oxoacetate derivatives: Hirshfeld surface analysis and DFT calculations

We report the synthesis and X-ray characterization of four triazole derivatives that include an α-ketoester functionality and two phenyl substituents. The compounds form self-assembled dimers in the solid state establishing two symmetrically equivalent O⋯π-hole interactions.
