Preferential solvation of p-nitroaniline in a binary mixture of chloroform and hydrogen bond acceptor solvents: the role of specific solute-solvent hydrogen bonding

FLIM nanoscopy resolves the structure and preferential adsorption in the co-nonsolvency of PNIPAM microgels in methanol-water

Polymer microgels are swollen macromolecular networks with a typical size of hundred of nanometers to several microns that show an extraordinary open and responsive architecture to different external stimuli, being therefore important candidates for nanobiotechnology and nanomedical applications such as biocatalysis, sensing and drug delivery. It is therefore crucial to understand the delicate balance of physical-chemical interactions between the polymer backbone and solvent molecules that to a high extent determine their responsivity. In particular, the co-nonsolvency effect of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) in aqueous alcohols is highly discussed, and there is a disagreement between molecular dynamics (MD) simulations (from literature) of the preferential adsorption of alcohol on the polymer chains and the values obtained by several empirical methods that mostly probe the bulk solvent properties. It is our contention that the most efficacious method for addressing this problem requires a nanoscopic method that can be combined with spectroscopy and record fluorescence spectra and super-resolved fluorescence lifetime images of microgels labeled covalently with the solvatochromic dye Nile Red. By employing this approach, we could simultaneously resolve the structure of sub-micron size objects in the swollen and in the collapsed state and estimate the solvent composition inside of them in - mixtures for two very different polymer architectures. We found an outstanding agreement between the MD simulations and our results that estimate a co-solvent molar fraction excess of approximately 3 with a very flat profile in the lateral direction of the microgel.

Solvatochromism in Mixtures of Hydrogen Bond Acceptor (HBA) Solvents with Water

The UV/Vis absorption energies νmax of Reichardt's dye B30 with respect to ET(30) and 4-nitroaniline (NA) are investigated as a function of the solvent composition Nav,z. in co-solvent/water mixtures. Nav,z. is the average molar concentration of the solvent mixture at a given solvent fraction z. The z can be the mole, the volume or the mass fraction. The co-solvents considered were acetonitrile, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, pyridine, piperidine and 2-(diethylamino)-ethanol. Acetone and acetonitrile can be expected to slightly enhance the water structure at low co-solvent concentrations. This interpretation is supported by the analysis of the refractive index as a function of the solvent composition. In general, it can be stated that the structural complexity of the binary solvent mixtures is mainly responsible for the evolution of the absorption energies ET(30) or νmax(NA) as a function of the mixture composition. In particular, the endothermic solvation of NA in co-solvent/water mixtures and its effect on the νmax(NA) is highlighted.

3-aminoquinoline: a turn-on fluorescent probe for preferential solvation in binary solvent mixtures

3-Aminoquinoline (3AQ) has been used as a fluorescent probe for preferential solvation in hexane-ethanol solvent mixtures. Results of the present experiment have been put into context by comparison with prior observations with 5-aminoquinoline (5AQ) as the probe. 3AQ exhibits a relatively small change of dipole moment (Δμ= 2.2 D) upon photoexcitation, compared to 5AQ (Δμ= 6.1D), which might appear to be a hindrance in the way of its use as a solvation probe. Indeed, the values of parameters like spectral shifts are smaller for the present experiment with 3AQ. At the smallest concentration of alcohol used, its local mole fraction around the probe is significantly lower than in the previous experiments with 5AQ. However, these apparent disadvantages are outweighed by the significant increase in fluorescence intensity and lifetime observed with increasing concentration of ethanol in the solvent mixture, as opposed to the drastic fluorescence quenching that occurs for 5AQ. This is a marked advantage in the use of 3AQ in studies like the present one. The local mole fraction of ethanol and preferential solvation index experienced by 3AQ are in line with those reported for 5AQ. The disadvantage of the smaller magnitude of Δμpersists in the time resolved fluorescence experiments, for solvent mixtures with very low ethanol content. Negligible wavelength dependence of fluorescence transients of 3AQ is observed forx_p= 0.002,. However, this effect is outweighed at higher alcohol concentrations, for which nanosecond dynamics of preferential solvation is observed.

Intramolecular Charge Transfer of Curcumin and Solvation Dynamics of DMSO Probed by Time-Resolved Raman Spectroscopy

Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of curcumin in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution in the excited state was investigated by femtosecond electronic and vibrational spectroscopy. Excited-state Raman spectra of curcumin in the locally-excited and charge-transferred (CT) state of the S₁ excited state were separated due to high temporal (<50 fs) and spectral (<10 cm⁻¹) resolutions of femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy. The ultrafast (0.6–0.8 ps) ICT and subsequent vibrational relaxation (6–9 ps) in the CT state were ubiquitously observed in the ground- and excited-state vibrational modes of the solute curcumin and the ν_CSC and ν_S=O modes of solvent DMSO. The ICT of curcumin in the excited state was preceded by the disruption of the solvation shells, including the breakage of hydrogen bonding between curcumin and DMSO molecules, which occurs at the ultrafast (20–50 fs) time scales.

The influence of the cation structure on the basicity-related polarity of ionic liquids

UV/Vis absorption data of (E)-4-(2-[5-{4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane-2-yl}thiene-2-yl]vinyl)-2-(dicyano-methylene)-3-cyano-5,5-dimethyl-2,5-dihydrofuran (ThTCF) as a solvatochromic probe is applied to examine the anion coordination strength (e.g. of N(CN)₂, BF₄, PF₆, N(Tf)₂, CF₃COO) as a function of the cation structure of ionic liquids. Several 1-n-alky-3-methylimidazolium- and tetraalkylammonium CH₃-NR₃⁺-based ILs with different n-alkyl chain lengths (R = -C₄H₉, -C₆H₁₁, -C₈H₁₇, -C₁₀H₂₁) are considered. UV/Vis absorption data of ThTCF show subtle correlations with hydrogen bond accepting (HBA) ability-related measurands such as Kamlet-Taft β, Freire's E_HB, and Laurence β₁ parameter as a function of anion and cation structure. The different influence of the n-alkyl chain length of imidazolium- and tetraalkylammonium-based ILs on the dipolarity and HBA strength is confirmed by comparison with the ¹⁴N isotropic hyperfine coupling constants (A_iso) of a positively (CATI) and negatively charged spin probe (TSKCr) of TEMPO-type [(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl] and quantum chemically derived dipoles of the cations. The A_iso values correlate with the absorption energy of ThTCF and E_HB, but in different ways depending on the anion or charge of the spin probe. In a final discussion of the β, E_HB, and β₁ scales in relation to ThTCF, the importance of the molar concentration N of ionic liquids for the physical significance of the respective parameters is discussed.

The Role of Hydrogen Bonding in the Preferential Solvation of 5-Aminoquinoline in Binary Solvent Mixtures

5-Aminoquinoline (5AQ) has been used as a fluorescent probe of preferential solvation (PS) in binary solvent mixtures in which the nonpolar component is diethyl ether and the polar component is protic (methanol) or aprotic (acetonitrile). Hence, the roles of solvent polarity and solute-solvent hydrogen bonding have been delineated. Positive deviations of spectral shifts from a linear dependence on the concentration of the polar component, signifying PS, are markedly more pronounced in case of the protic solvent. Solvation dynamics on a nanosecond time scale mark the formation of the solvation shell around the fluorescent probe. Time-resolved area-normalized emission spectra indicate the occurrence of the continuous solvation of the excited state when the polar component is acetonitrile. In contrast, two distinct states were observed when the polar component was methanol, the second state being the hydrogen bonded one. Translational diffusion is the rate-determining step for formation of the solvation shell. The time constant associated with it has been estimated from rise times observed in fluorescence transients monitored at the red end of the fluorescence spectra and also from the time evolution of the spectral width of time-resolved emission spectra.

Preferential solvation and optical properties of eumelanin building blocks in binary mixture of methanol and water

Employing a sequential quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical approach for polar protic solvents, we study the absorption spectrum of eumelanin building blocks including monomers, dimers, and tetramers in pure water and methanol and three water-methanol binary mixtures having water molar fractions (Xw = 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75). The binary mixture of solvents is a common situation in experiments, but theoretical studies are limited to the use of continuum models. Here, we use explicit solvent molecules, and specific solute-solvent interaction is analyzed and seen to play an important role. Effects of the electronic polarization of solute by the environment were included using a reliable iterative scheme. The results illustrate that the monomers, dimers, and tetramers are preferably solvated by methanol, but the composition of the mixture in the vicinity of the solute molecules is different from the bulk composition with a preferential microsolvation (hydrogen bonds) in water for most species considered. It is observed that the short-range electrostatic polarization effects of the hydrogen bonds lead to a slight blue shift of the excitation energies when the concentration of water in the mixture is enhanced. For the same species, there is an enhancement of the higher-energy absorption intensity caused by long-range electrostatic interactions with the environment and that the behavior of the experimental spectrum, which is characterized by a nearly monotonic decay from the ultraviolet to the infrared, is qualitatively reproduced by the superposition of the absorption spectra of monomers, dimers, and tetramers in the liquid phase.

Solvatochromic Study of Two Carbanion Monosubstituted 4-Tolyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium Phenacylids in Binary Hydroxyl Solvent Mixtures

Two 4-tolyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium methylids, namely 4-tolyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium-phenacylid and 4-tolyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium-4'-nitro-phenacylid, are studied from solvatochromic point of view in binary solvent mixtures of water with ethanol and water with methanol. The contributions (expressed in percent) of the universal and specific interactions are separated from the spectral shifts recorded in the visible range for each composition of the binary solvent mixture. The essential role of the orientation and induction interactions in the studied solutions was demonstrated. Based on the statistic cell model of the binary solvent mixture solutions, the difference between the formation energies of ylid-water and ylid-alcohol complexes is estimated. The composition of the ylid's first solvation shell was also established using the model of the binary solvent mixture solutions. The results obtained from the statistical cell model were compared with those obtained by using the Suppan's model, resulting a good agreement.

Reinvestigation of the photophysics of 3-aminobenzoic acid in neat and mixed binary solvents

The present study elucidates the reinvestigation of the photophysical behavior of 3-aminobenzoic acid (3ABA) in solvents of different polarities using the steady-state spectroscopic techniques. Kamlet-Taft and Catalan solvatochromic models have been used to analyze the solvatochromic changes in neat solvents. The hydrogen bond donating ability of the solvent was found to be the main parameter affecting the spectral behavior of 3ABA. The solvatochromic characteristics of 3ABA have also been examined in binary solvent mixtures viz. acetonitrile (ACN)-methanol (MeOH) and benzene (BEN)-MeOH using the concept of preferential solvation. The preferential solvation of 3ABA shows unusual behavior for BEN-MeOH binary mixture and described unnoticed sigmoidal behavior in the ground state and synergistic impact in the excited state. Besides, the 3ABA was studied theoretically by quantum chemical calculations using (HF) Hartree-Fock and (DFT/B3LYP) density functional theories and its electronic absorption bands have been assigned by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The effect of solvents on 3ABA was considered using a IEF-PCM-TDDFT (integral equation formalism of the polarizable continuum model- TDDFT) method. Thus, the theoretical results were found to be closer to the experimental results.

Dipole moments of conjugated donor-acceptor substituted systems: calculations vs. experiments

We find that quantum mechanical calculations using B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ model chemistry involving anharmonic correction on simple conjugated organic compounds without rotating moieties provide the dipole moment values and molecular geometries with high accuracy. In the presence of one or two conjugated electron donating or accepting substituents capable of hindered rotation, the calculated dipole moments reproduce the experimental results equally well only in the cases when the experiments were done at the temperatures at which rotation of substituents remains hindered. In order to reproduce the experimental dipole moments determined at higher temperatures, a model assuming free (unhindered) rotation should be applied. In these cases, the contribution of each rotamer is equal and using anharmonic correction is not necessary. The APFD functional produces similar results and the M062X functional yields larger deviations from the experimental data. The other methods, like HF and MP2, are the least accurate with the basis sets usually employed for interpreting the experimental data.

B3LYP functional can reproduce the experimental dipole moments of conjugated organic molecules with high accuracy.

Launching Werner Complexes into the Modern Era of Catalytic Enantioselective Organic Synthesis

Reactions catalyzed by transition metal complexes almost always entail binding of one or more reactants to the metal center, and nearly every corner of the "chiral pool" has been picked over in efforts to develop enantioselective catalysts. As reported by Alfred Werner in 1911-1912, salts of the formally D₃-symmetric [Co(en)₃]³⁺ trication (en = ethylenediamine) were among the first chiral inorganic compounds to be resolved into enantiomers. These air- and water-stable complexes are substitution-inert, so for 100 years they languished without application in organic synthesis. We then showed that when they are rendered soluble in organic media by lipophilic anions such as fluorinated tetraarylborates BAr_f^-, they become potent catalysts for a variety of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond forming reactions.These involve substrate activation by hydrogen bonding to the coordinated NH₂ units (pK_a ca. 15), a "second coordination sphere" mechanism. Only modest enantioselectivities are obtained with [Co(en)₃]³⁺ 3BAr_f^- or related chromium, rhodium, iridium, and platinum salts. However, high enantioselectivities are achieved when the three en ligands are replaced by the 1,2-diphenyl analogues (S,S)- or (R,R)-H₂NCHPhCHPhNH₂. Here only one BAr_f^- anion is required to solubilize the trication, so a number of mixed-salt catalysts (2X^-BAr_f^-) have been evaluated. Alternatively, a dimethylamino group can be tethered to the backbone of one en ligand, providing bifunctional catalysts that obviate any need for an external base. Interestingly, the counteranions modulate the enantioselectivities somewhat. However, catalysts with chiral anions do not significantly outperform benchmark catalysts with achiral anions. Cagelike chiral hexaaminecobalt(III) complexes known as sepulchrates and sarcophagines, which feature secondary NH donor atoms, can also serve as catalysts, but the enantioselectivities are very low.In a spinoff application, certain salts are found to be superb "chiral solvating agents", leading to distinct sets of NMR signals for enantiomers of chiral analytes with Lewis basic functional groups. Loadings of 10-25 mol % generally suffice, providing the best way of assaying the enantiomeric purities of a host of compounds. Also, mixtures of several chiral compounds can be simultaneously analyzed. It is not surprising that complexes that perform well in chiral recognition phenomena also excel as enantioselective catalysts.In this Account, the stereochemical properties of the preceding complexes are treated, as well as arcana generally known only to specialists in the field. These include the use of charcoal for equilibrating configurations of the cobalt stereocenter and Sephadex for separating enantiomers and diastereomers. Other types of metal-containing hydrogen-bond-donor catalysts are briefly surveyed (noncoordinating NH units can also be effective), including several developed by other groups. However, the mechanisms of enantioselection in all of these transformations remain obscure. The optimum diastereomer and anion set varies from reaction to reaction, suggesting a "phenotypic plasticity" that allows adaption to a variety of processes.

The formation of free ions and electrophoretic mobility of Ag and Au nanoparticles in n-hexadecane–chloroform mixtures at low concentrations of AOT

The electrophoretic mobility of Ag and Au nanoparticles in n-hexadecane–chloroform mixtures was studied as a function of the chloroform content (from 0 to 100 vol%).
