Recent advances in amphiphilic block copolymer templated mesoporous metal-based materials: assembly engineering and applications

Nanoengineering Multilength-Scale Porous Hierarchy in Mesoporous Metal-Organic Framework Single Crystals

Developing a reliable method for constructing mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with single-crystalline forms remains a challenging task despite numerous efforts. This study presents a solvent-mediated assembly method for fabricating zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) single-crystal nanoparticles with a well-defined micro-mesoporous structure using polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer micelles as a soft-template. The precise control of particle sizes, ranging from 85 to 1200 nm, is achieved by regulating nucleation and crystal growth rates while maintaining consistent pore diameters in mesoporous nanoparticles and a rhombohedral dodecahedron morphology. Furthermore, this study presents a robust platform for nanoarchitecturing to prepare hierarchically porous materials (e.g., core-shell and hollow structures), including microporous ZIF@mesoporous ZIF, hollow mesoporous ZIF, and mesoporous ZIF@mesoporous ZIF. Such a multimodal pore design, ranging from microporous to microporous/mesoporous and further micro-/meso-/macroporous, provides significant evidence for the future possibility of the structural design of MOFs.

Smart synthesis of highly porous metal oxide powders with the self-assembly of amphiphilic organic compounds

Supramolecular chemistry-mediated synthesis has thus far been employed for the design of ordered mesoporous structures surrounded by various metal oxides that are helpful as nanometer-scaled unique reaction containers with high specific surface area, large pore volume and uniform mesopores useful for the storage and mass transport of large-sized molecules. The evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) process is very powerful for fabricating mesoporous metal oxide films with the rapid evaporation of solvents. Although a similar EISA process is also applied to synthesize mesoporous metal oxide powders using the room-temperature drying process with slow evaporation of solvents, the control of the evaporation rate should be quantified for the complete reproduction of high-quality metal oxide powders. In this feature article, I introduce our recent challenge in synthesizing highly porous metal oxides in powder form with the smart optimization of synthetic conditions by combining several EISA processes to eliminate the mismatch of the rate of solvent evaporation, inducing the self-assembly of amphiphilic organic molecules.

Terpyridine-Decorated Polymer Nanosphere Latex: Template Nanocarriers for the Synthesis of Cu-CeO2 Hollow Spheres

Water-soluble polymers with the ability to complex metal ions through complexing ligands have attracted significant interest in diverse domains, such as optical or catalyst applications. In this paper, we successfully synthesized, through a one-pot process combining polymerization-induced self-assembly and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, aqueous dispersions of terpyridine-decorated poly[poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate]-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (tpy-PPEGMA-b-PMMA) amphiphilic block copolymers. The in-situ formation of well-defined amphiphilic block copolymers and their self-assembly led to nanosphere latex with the hydrodynamic diameters increasing from 17 to 52 nm and the length of the copolymers increasing from 21,000 to 51,000 g·mol-1. These aqueous dispersed tpy-PPEGMA-b-PMMA nanospheres effectively complex metal ions, such as Cu2+, in a stoichiometric ratio of 2:1. Subsequently, these metal-complexed nanospheres were employed as soft template nanocarriers to control, on the nanometer scale, the dispersion of metal on a nanostructured support. This is exemplified by the synthesis of copper supported on cerium oxide hollow spheres (Cu-CeO2) using Cu2+-tpy-PPEGMA-b-PMMA as template nanocarriers and CeO2 nanoparticles. This novel assembly engineering strategy for the preparation of atomically dispersed metal on a nanostructured support was highlighted through the utilization of Cu-CeO2 hollow spheres as an electrocatalyst for the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) to NH3. These encouraging outcomes emphasize the potential of metal-metal oxide-nanostructured materials to treat contaminated water sources with nitrate while allowing the green production of ammonia.

Disclosing Topographical and Chemical Patterns in Confined Films of High-Molecular-Weight Block Copolymers under Controlled Solvothermal Annealing

The microphase separation of high-molecular-weight block copolymers into nanostructured films is strongly dependent on the surface fields. Both, the chain mobility and the effective interaction parameters can lead to deviations from the bulk morphologies in the structures adjacent to the substrate. Resolving frustrated morphologies with domain period L0 above 100 nm is an experimental challenge. Here, solvothermal annealing was used to assess the contribution of elevated temperatures of the vapor Tv and of the substrate Ts on the evolution of the microphase-separated structures in thin films symmetric of polystyrene-b-poly(2vinylpyridine) block copolymer (PS-PVP) with L0 about 120 nm. Pronounced topographic mesh-like and stripe patterns develop on a time scale of min and are attributed to the perforated lamella (PL) and up-standing lamella phases. By setting Tv/Ts combinations it is possible to tune the sizes of the resulting PL patterns by almost 10%. Resolving chemical periodicity using selective metallization of the structures revealed multiplication of the topographic stripes, i.e., complex segregation of the component within the topographic pattern, presumably as a result of morphological phase transition from initial non-equilibrium spherical morphology. Reported results reveal approaches to tune the topographical and chemical periodicity of microphase separation of high-molecular-weight block copolymers under strong confinement, which is essential for exploiting these structures as functional templates.

A Versatile Synthesis Platform Based on Polymer Cubosomes for a Library of Highly Ordered Nanoporous Metal Oxides Particles

Polymer cubosomes (PCs) have well-defined inverse bicontinuous cubic mesophases formed by amphiphilic block copolymer bilayers. The open hydrophilic channels, large periods, and robust physical properties of PCs are advantageous to many host-guest interactions and yet not fully exploited, especially in the fields of functional nanomaterials. Here, the self-assembly of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene block copolymers is systematically investigated and a series of robust PCs is developed via a cosolvent method. Ordered nanoporous metal oxide particles are obtained by selectively filling the hydrophilic channels of PCs via an impregnation strategy, followed by a two-step thermal treatment. Based on this versatile PC platform, the general synthesis of a library of ordered porous particles with different pore structures3 ¯ $\bar{3}$ 3 ¯ $\bar{3}$ , tunable large pore size (18-78 nm), high specific surface areas (up to 123.3 m2 g-1 for WO3) and diverse framework compositions, such as transition and non-transition metal oxides, rare earth chloride oxides, perovskite, pyrochlore, and high-entropy metal oxides is demonstrated. As typical materials obtained via this method, ordered porous WO3 particles have the advantages of open continuous structure and semiconducting properties, thus showing superior gas sensing performances toward hydrogen sulfide.

Efficient optimization of the synthetic conditions for aerosol-assisted high-quality mesoporous CeO2 powders

The morphology of surfactant-assisted mesoporous metal oxides was tuned to obtain high surface-area particles by utilizing the synthetic conditions for fabricating transparent thin films through an evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) process. For investigating their potential applications, especially for designing heterogeneous catalysts, mesoporous metal oxides should be obtained in powder forms; however, a serious limitation associated with their reproducibility persists. Herein, along with a rapid optimization approach, starting from determining and improving chemical composition for the fabrication of mesoporous metal oxide films, an advanced approach to obtain highly porous metal oxide powders is presented using a temperature-controlled spray-drying process with step-by-step but smooth optimization by combining several EISA processes, involving the utilization of a precursor solution optimized for a slow-drying process in the case of ceria (CeO2) using poly(styrene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO).

Stretchable phosphorescent polymers by multiphase engineering

Stretchable phosphorescence materials potentially enable applications in diverse advanced fields in wearable electronics. However, achieving room-temperature phosphorescence materials simultaneously featuring long-lived emission and good stretchability is challenging because it is hard to balance the rigidity and flexibility in the same polymer. Here we present a multiphase engineering for obtaining stretchable phosphorescent materials by combining stiffness and softness simultaneously in well-designed block copolymers. Due to the microphase separation, copolymers demonstrate an intrinsic stretchability of 712%, maintaining an ultralong phosphorescence lifetime of up to 981.11 ms. This multiphase engineering is generally applicable to a series of binary and ternary initiator systems with color-tunable phosphorescence in the visible range. Moreover, these copolymers enable multi-level volumetric data encryption and stretchable afterglow display. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the nanostructures and material properties for designing stretchable materials and extends the potential of phosphorescence polymers.

Low-Temperature, Universal Synthetic Route for Mesoporous Metal Oxides by Exploiting Synergistic Effect of Thermal Activation and Plasma

Mesoporous metal oxides exhibit excellent physicochemical properties and are widely used in various fields, including energy storage/conversion, catalysis, and sensors. Although several soft-template approaches are reported, high-temperature calcination for both metal oxide formation and template removal is necessary, which limits direct synthesis on a plastic substrate for flexible devices. Here, a universal synthetic approach that combines thermal activation and oxygen plasma to synthesize diverse mesoporous metal oxides (V2O5, V6O13, TiO2, Nb2O5, WO3, and MoO3) at low temperatures (150-200 °C), which can be applicable to a flexible polymeric substrate is introduced. As a demonstration, a flexible micro-supercapacitor is fabricated by directly synthesizing mesoporous V2O5 on an indium-tin oxide-coated colorless polyimide film. The energy storage performance is well maintained under severe bending conditions.

Beyond the Meso/Macroporous Boundary: Extending Capillary Condensation-Based Pore Size Characterization in Thin Films Through Tailored Adsorptives

The characterization of thin films containing nanopores with diameters exceeding 50 nm poses significant challenges, especially when deploying sorption-based techniques. Conventional volumetric physisorption or mercury intrusion methods have limited applicability in thin films due to constraints in sample preparation and nondestructive testing. In this context, ellipsometric porosimetry represents a viable alternative, leveraging its optical sensitivity to thin films. With existing setups relying on the capillary condensation of volatile compounds such as water, applicability is typically restricted to pore dimensions <50 nm. In this study, we introduce two high-molar-mass hydrocarbon adsorptives, namely ethylbenzene and n-nonane. These adsorptives exhibit substantial potential in improving the accuracy of physisorption measurements beyond mesoporosity (i.e., >50 nm). Specifically, with n-nonane, applicability is extended up to 80 nm pores. Our measurement guidelines propose a nondestructive, expeditious (<60 min), low-pressure (<0.03 bar) approach to investigate nanoporous thin films with potential adaptability to diverse structural architectures.

Smartphone-based electrochemical sensor for cost-effective, rapid and on site detection of chlorogenic acid in herbs using biomass-derived hierarchically porous carbon synthesized by a soft-hard dual template method

To achieve excellent germplasm resource screening and ensure the quality control of herbal tea raw material, it is important to establish a cost-effective, rapid, and on site quantitative detection method for their bioactive constituents. We developed a smartphone-operated sensor for electrochemical detection of chlorogenic acid (CGA) using hierarchically porous carbon (DSiFPC), synthesized through a soft-hard dual template strategy with tannin acid as a carbon source, silica colloid as a hard template, and Pluronic F127 as a soft template. The DSiFPC modified glassy carbon electrode sensor showed excellent electrocatalytic ability towards CGA, with a wide linear range of 0.03-1 μM and a low limit of detection of 6.2 nM. It was successfully applied for detecting CGA in dried flowers of Lonicera japonica. Furthermore, a portable sensor utilizing a DSiFPC modified screen-printed electrode was employed for on site detection of CGA in fresh Eucommia ulmoides leaves, yielding satisfactory recoveries.

Synthesis of Amphiphilic Block Copolymer and Its Application in Pigment-Based Ink

Amphiphilic block copolymers-based aqueous color inks show great potential in the field of visual communication design. However, the conventional step-by-step chemistry employed to synthesize the amphiphilic block copolymers is intricate, with low yield and high economic and environmental costs. In this work, we present a novel method for preparing an amphiphilic AB di-block copolymer of PCL-b-PAA by employing a combined polymerization strategy that involves both cationic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the ε-caprolactone monomer and the reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization on the acrylic acid monomer simultaneously. The corresponding polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) serve as the hydrophobic and hydrophilic units, respectively. The effectiveness of the amphiphilic AB di-block copolymer as the polymeric pigment dispersant for water-based color inks is evaluated. The amphiphilic AB di-block copolymer of PCL-b-PAA exhibits a molecular weight of 1400 g mol-1, which is consistent with the theoretical value and suitable for polymeric dispersant application. The high surface excess (Γmax) of the PCL-b-PAA in water indicates a densely packed molecular morphology at the water/air interface. Additionally, micelles can be stably formed in the aqueous PCL-b-PAA solution at very low concentrations by demonstrating a low CMC value of 10-4 wt% and a micelle dimension of approximately 30 nm. The model ink dispersion is prepared using organic dyes (Disperse Yellow 232) and the amphiphilic block copolymer of PCL-b-PAA. The dispersion demonstrates near-Newtonian behavior, which is highly favorable for the application as inkjet ink. Furthermore, the ink dispersion displays a low viscosity, making it particularly suitable for visual communication design and printing purposes. Moreover, the ink dispersion demonstrates an unimodal distribution of the particle size, with an average diameter of approximately 500 nm. It retains exceptional stability of dispersion and even conducts a thermal aging treatment at 60 °C for 5 days. This work presents a facile and efficient synthetic strategy and molecular design of AB di-block copolymer-based dispersants for dye dispersions.

Hierarchical assembly of foldable polymers and applications in organic optoelectronics and antibacterial or antiviral materials

Aggregation of amphiphilic polymers in block-selective solvents produces different nanostructures, which have been studied extensively for wide-ranging applications. Nevertheless, such immiscibility-driven aggregation does not endow them with the desired structural precision, predictability or surface functional group exposure, which significantly impact their functional applications. More recently, biomimetic folded structures of synthetic macromolecules (mostly oligomers) have come to the fore, but such studies have been limited to probe the secondary structures. In this article, we have collated hierarchical structures of foldamers, especially highlighting our recent contribution to the field of chain-folding regulated assembly of segmented polyurethanes (PUs) and their functional applications. A series of such PUs have been discussed, which contain a segmented hydrocarbon backbone and alternately placed pendant solvophilic groups. In either water or highly non-polar solvents (TCE, MCH), depending on the nature of the pendant group, they exhibit folded structures stabilized by intra-chain H-bonding. Hierarchical assembly of such folded chains by inter-chain H-bonding and/or π-stacking leads to the formation of well-defined nanostructures with functional applications ranging from organic optoelectronics to biomaterials. For example, a segmented PU with appended naphthalene-diimide (NDI) chromophores showed a pleated structure in MCH, which helped in organization of the NDI chromophores within π-stacking distance. Such folded polymer chains eventually produced nanotubular structures with excellent electron mobility. They also showed efficient intercalation of the pyrene (Py) donor by NDI-Py charge-transfer interaction and in this case the mixed nanotubular structure exhibited prominent room-temperature ferroelectricity. On the other hand, having cationic functionalities as the pendant groups such chain-folding regulated assembly produced unilamellar polymersomes with excellent antibacterial activity with very low minimum inhibitory concentrations (<10 μg mL-1). Replacing the pendant amine functionality with sulphate groups made these polyurethanes highly potent antiviral materials. In the absence of the alternating connectivity of the solvophobic and solvophilic segments or rigid hydrocarbon backbone, such folding propensity is destroyed, leading to structural collapse. While significant efforts have been made in correlating primary structures of wide-ranging polymers with their functional applications, this article demonstrates the direct correlation between the secondary structures of polymers and their functional properties.

Covalent organic frameworks: linkage types, synthetic methods and bio-related applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are composed of small organic molecules linked via covalent bonds, which have tunable mesoporous structure, good biocompatibility and functional diversities. These excellent properties make COFs a promising candidate for constructing biomedical nanoplatforms and provide ample opportunities for nanomedicine development. A systematic review of the linkage types and synthesis methods of COFs is of indispensable value for their biomedical applications. In this review, we first summarize the types of various linkages of COFs and their corresponding properties. Then, we highlight the reaction temperature, solvent and reaction time required by different synthesis methods and show the most suitable synthesis method by comparing the merits and demerits of various methods. To appreciate the cutting-edge research on COFs in bioscience technology, we also summarize the bio-related applications of COFs, including drug delivery, tumor therapy, bioimaging, biosensing and antimicrobial applications. We hope to provide insight into the interdisciplinary research on COFs and promote the development of COF nanomaterials for biomedical applications and their future clinical translations.

Alkaloid Precipitant Reaction Inspired Controllable Synthesis of Mesoporous Tungsten Oxide Spheres for Biomarker Sensing

Highly porous sensitive materials with well-defined structures and morphologies are extremely desirable for developing high-performance chemiresistive gas sensors. Herein, inspired by the classical alkaloid precipitant reaction, a robust and reliable active mesoporous nitrogen polymer sphere-directed synthesis method was demonstrated for the controllable construction of heteroatom-doped mesoporous tungsten oxide spheres. In the typical synthesis, P-doped mesoporous WO3 monodisperse spheres with radially oriented channels (P-mWO3-R) were obtained with a diameter of ∼180 nm, high specific surface area, and crystalline skeleton. The in situ-introduced P atoms could effectively adjust the coordination environment of W atoms (Wδ+-Ov), giving rise to dramatically enhanced active surface-adsorbed oxygen species and unusual metastable ε-WO3 crystallites. The P-mWO3-R spheres were applied for the sensing of 3-hydroxy-2-butanone (3H2B), a biomarker of foodborne pathogenic bacteria Listeria monocytogenes (LM). The sensor exhibited high sensitivity (Ra/Rg = 29 to 3 ppm), fast response dynamics (26/7 s), outstanding selectivity, and good long-term stability. Furthermore, the device was integrated into a wireless sensing module to realize remote real-time and precise detection of LM in practical applications, making it possible to evaluate food quality using gas sensors conveniently.

Mesoporous multimetallic nanospheres with exposed highly entropic alloy sites

Multimetallic alloys (MMAs) with various compositions enrich the materials library with increasing diversity and have received much attention in catalysis applications. However, precisely shaping MMAs in mesoporous nanostructures and mapping the distributions of multiple elements remain big challenge due to the different reduction kinetics of various metal precursors and the complexity of crystal growth. Here we design a one-pot wet-chemical reduction approach to synthesize core-shell motif PtPdRhRuCu mesoporous nanospheres (PtPdRhRuCu MMNs) using a diblock copolymer as the soft template. The PtPdRhRuCu MMNs feature adjustable compositions and exposed porous structures rich in highly entropic alloy sites. The formation processes of the mesoporous structures and the reduction and growth kinetics of different metal precursors of PtPdRhRuCu MMNs are revealed. The PtPdRhRuCu MMNs exhibit robust electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activities and low overpotentials of 10, 13, and 28 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline (1.0 M KOH), acidic (0.5 M H2SO4), and neutral (1.0 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS)) electrolytes, respectively. The accelerated kinetics of the HER in PtPdRhRuCu MMNs are derived from multiple compositions with synergistic interactions among various metal sites and mesoporous structures with excellent mass/electron transportation characteristics.

Triple-Peak Photoluminescence of DNA-Hybrid Alq3 Crystals Emitting a Depressed Single Peak upon Bio-Recognition

The green organic semiconductor, tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (Alq₃), was hybridized with DNA growing in the shape of hexagonal prismatic crystals. In this study, we applied hydrodynamic flow to the fabrication of Alq₃ crystals doped with DNA molecules. The hydrodynamic flow in the Taylor-Couette reactor induced nanoscale pores in the Alq₃ crystals, especially at the side part of the particles. The particles exhibited distinctly different photoluminescence emissions divided into three parts compared to common Alq₃-DNA hybrid crystals. We named this particle a "three-photonic-unit". After treatment with complementary target DNA, the three-photonic-unit Alq₃ particles doped with DNAs were found to emit depressed luminescence from side parts of the particles. This novel phenomenon would expand the technological value of these hybrid crystals with divided photoluminescence emissions toward a wider range of bio-photonic applications.

Rare earth Y doping induced lattice strain of mesoporous PtPd nanospheres for alkaline oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

The synthesis of catalysts with controllable morphology and composition is important to enhance the catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, trimetallic PtPdY mesoporous nanospheres (PtPdY MNs) are produced via a one-step chemical reduction method applying F127 as soft temple under acidic condition. The mesoporous structure provides a large contact area and also stimulates the diffusion and mass transfer of reactants and products. Besides, synergistic effect among Pt, Pd and Y elements effectively alters their electronic structure, enhancing the catalytic activity. Therefore, the PtPdY MNs show excellent ORR permanence to Pt/C under the alkaline solution. This study offers an effective channel for the preparation of mesoporous metals with rare earth metal doping towards promising electrocatalytic applications.

Functionalization of Mesoporous Semiconductor Metal Oxides for Gas Sensing: Recent Advances and Emerging Challenges

With the emerging of the Internet of Things, chemiresistive gas sensors have been extensively applied in industrial production, food safety, medical diagnosis, and environment detection, etc. Considerable efforts have been devoted to improving the gas-sensing performance through tailoring the structure, functions, defects and electrical conductivity of sensitive materials. Among the numerous sensitive materials, mesoporous semiconductor metal oxides possess unparalleled properties, including tunable pore size, high specific surface area, abundant metal-oxygen bonds, and rapid mass transfer/diffusion behavior (Knudsen diffusion), which have been regarded as the most potential sensitive materials. Herein, the synthesis strategies for mesoporous metal oxides are overviewed, the classical functionalization techniques of sensitive materials are also systemically summarized as a highlight, including construction of mesoporous structure, regulation of micro-nano structure (i.e., heterojunctions), noble metal sensitization (e.g., Au, Pt, Ag, Pd) and heteroatomic doping (e.g., C, N, Si, S). In addition, the structure-function relationship of sensitive materials has been discussed at molecular-atomic level, especially for the chemical sensitization effect, elucidating the interface adsorption/catalytic mechanism. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives are proposed, which will open a new door for the development of intelligent gas sensor in various applications.

Amphiphilic Block Copolymers: Their Structures, and Self-Assembly to Polymeric Micelles and Polymersomes as Drug Delivery Vehicles

Self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers display a multiplicity of nanoscale periodic patterns proposed as a dominant tool for the 'bottom-up' fabrication of nanomaterials with different levels of ordering. The present review article focuses on the recent updates to the self-association of amphiphilic block copolymers in aqueous media into varied core-shell morphologies. We briefly describe the block copolymers, their types, microdomain formation in bulk and micellization in selective solvents. We also discuss the characteristic features of block copolymers nanoaggregates viz., polymer micelles (PMs) and polymersomes. Amphiphilic block copolymers (with a variety of hydrophobic blocks and hydrophilic blocks; often polyethylene oxide) self-assemble in water to micelles/niosomes similar to conventional nonionic surfactants with high drug loading capacity. Double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) made of neutral block-neutral block or neutral block-charged block can transform one block to become hydrophobic under the influence of a stimulus (physical/chemical/biological), and thus induced amphiphilicity and display self-assembly are discussed. Different kinds of polymer micelles (viz. shell and core-cross-linked, core-shell-corona, schizophrenic, crew cut, Janus) are presented in detail. Updates on polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) and crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) are also provided. Polyion complexes (PICs) and polyion complex micelles (PICMs) are discussed. Applications of these block copolymeric micelles and polymersomes as nanocarriers in drug delivery systems are described.

Modeling Interfacial Interaction between Gas Molecules and Semiconductor Metal Oxides: A New View Angle on Gas Sensing

With the development of internet of things and artificial intelligence electronics, metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based sensing materials have attracted increasing attention from both fundamental research and practical applications. MOS materials possess intrinsic physicochemical properties, tunable compositions, and electronic structure, and are particularly suitable for integration and miniaturization in developing chemiresistive gas sensors. During sensing processes, the dynamic gas-solid interface interactions play crucial roles in improving sensors' performance, and most studies emphasize the gas-MOS chemical reactions. Herein, from a new view angle focusing more on physical gas-solid interactions during gas sensing, basic theory overview and latest progress for the dynamic process of gas molecules including adsorption, desorption, and diffusion, are systematically summarized and elucidated. The unique electronic sensing mechanisms are also discussed from various aspects including molecular interaction models, gas diffusion mechanism, and interfacial reaction behaviors, where structure-activity relationship and diffusion behavior are overviewed in detail. Especially, the surface adsorption-desorption dynamics are discussed and evaluated, and their potential effects on sensing performance are elucidated from the gas-solid interfacial regulation perspective. Finally, the prospect for further research directions in improving gas dynamic processes in MOS gas sensors is discussed, aiming to supplement the approaches for the development of high-performance MOS gas sensors.

Dynamic Coassembly of Amphiphilic Block Copolymer and Polyoxometalates in Dual Solvent Systems: An Efficient Approach to Heteroatom-Doped Semiconductor Metal Oxides with Controllable Nanostructures

Dynamic coassembly of block copolymers (BCPs) with Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs) is developed to synthesize heteroatom-doped tungsten oxide with controllable nanostructures, including hollow hemispheres, nanoparticles, and nanowires. The versatile coassembly in dual n-hexane/THF solvent solution enables the fomation of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS)/POMs (e.g., silicotungstic acid, H₄SiW₁₂O₄₀) nanocomposites with different morphologies such as spherical vesicles, inverse spherical micelles, and inverse cylindrical micelles, which can be readily converted into diverse nanostructured metal oxides with high surface area and unique properties via in situ thermal-induced structural evolution. For example, uniform silicon-doped WO₃ (Si-WO₃) hollow hemispheres derived from coassembly of PEO-b-PS with H₄SiW₁₂O₄₀ were utilized to fabricate gas sensing devices which exhibit superior gas sensing performance toward acetone, thanks to the selective gas-solid interface catalytic reaction that induces resistance changes of the devices due to the high specific surface areas, abundant oxygen vacancies, and the Si-doping induced metastable ε-phase of WO₃. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals the mechanism about the high sensitivity and selectivity of the gas sensors. On the basis of the as-fabricated devices, an integrated gas sensor module was constructed, which is capable of real-time monitoring the environmental acetone concentration and displaying relevant sensing results on a smart phone via Bluetooth communication.

Porous Polymer Cubosomes with Ordered Single Primitive Bicontinuous Architecture and Their Sodium-Iodine Batteries

Bicontinuous porous materials, which possess 3D interconnected pore channels facilitating a smooth mass transport, have attracted much interest in the fields of energy and catalysis. However, their synthesis remains very challenging. We report a general approach, using polymer cubosomes as the template, for the controllable synthesis of bicontinuous porous polymers with an ordered single primitive (SP) cubic structure, including polypyrrole (SP-PPy), poly-m-phenylenediamine (SP-PmPD), and polydopamine (SP-PDA). Specifically, the resultant SP-PPy had a unit cell parameter of 99 nm, pore diameter of 45 nm, and specific surface area of approximately 60 m²·g^-1. As a proof of concept, the I₂-adsorbed SP-PPy was employed as the cathode materials of newly emerged Na-I₂ batteries, which delivered a record-high specific capacity (235 mA·h·g^-1 at 0.5 C), excellent rate capability, and cycling stability (with a low capacity decay of 0.12% per cycle within 400 cycles at 1 C). The advantageous contributions of the bicontinuous structure and I₃^- adsorption mechanism of SP-PPy were revealed by a combination of ion diffusion experiments and theoretical calculations. This study opens a new avenue for the synthesis of porous polymers with new topologies, broadens the spectrum of bicontinuous-structured materials, and also develops a novel potential application for porous polymers.

Synthesizing ordered mesoporous Ni spheres with uniform and adjustable size through a one-step Pd2+-assisted soft-templating strategy

Developing an effective way to synthesize uniform ordered mesoporous metal spheres with controllable diameter is important for enhancing their performance in various applications but remains a challenge. Herein, a one-step and facile Pd²⁺-assisted soft-templating strategy is reported to synthesize ordered mesoporous Ni spheres (OMNiS) with highly uniform and tunable diameters. In this synthesis methodology, lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) are used as a meso-structural template and Pd nuclei obtained from the reduction of Pd²⁺ ions are used as nucleation sites for directing Ni deposition. The OMNiS samples with average sphere diameter ranging from 50 nm to 190 nm are produced by varying the amount of Pd²⁺ in the LLC precursor, revealing that the Pd nuclei play a key role in improving the uniformity of the mesoporous Ni spheres and adjusting the sphere diameter. The satisfactory combination of uniform sphere size, high surface area, great conductivity, and highly ordered mesoporous structure for the optimal OMNiS-100 sample contributes to its superior electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline electrolyte with a low overpotential of 271 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm^-2, which is much smaller than that of RuO₂ (368 mV), along with a remarkable durability.

Isothermal Titration Calorimetry Directly Measures the Selective Swelling of Block Copolymer Vesicles in the Presence of Organic Acid

Block copolymer (BCP) vesicles loaded with drug molecules may have a nonidentical swelling behavior due to the strong interactions between BCP vesicles and loaded molecules. A thermodynamic study of the swelling for such a system is of great importance in clarifying their pH-gated drug delivery behavior. In this study, the selective swelling of polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) vesicles in the presence of different acids was compared using dynamic light scattering, zeta-potential, and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) measurements. Transmission electron microscopy observation verified that these PS-b-P2VP vesicles were mainly multilamellar. Importantly, using the ITC measurement, we first compared the thermodynamic parameters, including ΔH, ΔG, and ΔS, association binding sites (N), and binding association constants (K _a) in the selective swelling of the PS-b-P2VP vesicles in low pH (pH ∼3.5), with or without a hydrogen bonding interaction. We observed that the existence of a hydrogen bonding interaction between tartaric acid/malic acid and PS-b-P2VP generates a limitation to the selective swelling of PS-b-P2VP vesicles, in which conditions will depend on the molecular structures of the organic acids and PS-b-P2VP. This work first provides a quantitative insight on the swelling of BCP vesicles in the presence of hydrogen bonding and highlights the power of ITC measurements for investigating the structural transformation of polymer nanostructures.

Interfacial Assembly and Applications of Functional Mesoporous Materials

Functional mesoporous materials have gained tremendous attention due to their distinctive properties and potential applications. In recent decades, the self-assembly of micelles and framework precursors into mesostructures on the liquid-solid, liquid-liquid, and gas-liquid interface has been explored in the construction of functional mesoporous materials with diverse compositions, morphologies, mesostructures, and pore sizes. Compared with the one-phase solution synthetic approach, the introduction of a two-phase interface in the synthetic system changes self-assembly behaviors between micelles and framework species, leading to the possibility for the on-demand fabrication of unique mesoporous architectures. In addition, controlling the interfacial tension is critical to manipulate the self-assembly process for precise synthesis. In particular, recent breakthroughs based on the concept of the "monomicelles" assembly mechanism are very promising and interesting for the synthesis of functional mesoporous materials with the precise control. In this review, we highlight the synthetic strategies, principles, and interface engineering at the macroscale, microscale, and nanoscale for oriented interfacial assembly of functional mesoporous materials over the past 10 years. The potential applications in various fields, including adsorption, separation, sensors, catalysis, energy storage, solar cells, and biomedicine, are discussed. Finally, we also propose the remaining challenges, possible directions, and opportunities in this field for the future outlook.

Noble Metal Nanoparticles Decorated Metal Oxide Semiconducting Nanowire Arrays Interwoven into 3D Mesoporous Superstructures for Low-Temperature Gas Sensing

Mesoporous materials have been extensively studied for various applications due to their high specific surface areas and well-interconnected uniform nanopores. Great attention has been paid to synthesizing stable functional mesoporous metal oxides for catalysis, energy storage and conversion, chemical sensing, and so forth. Heteroatom doping and surface modification of metal oxides are typical routes to improve their performance. However, it still remains challenging to directly and conveniently synthesize mesoporous metal oxides with both a specific functionalized surface and heteroatom-doped framework. Here, we report a one-step multicomponent coassembly to synthesize Pt nanoparticle-decorated Si-doped WO₃ nanowires interwoven into 3D mesoporous superstructures (Pt/Si-WO₃ NWIMSs) by using amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS), Keggin polyoxometalates (H₄SiW₁₂O₄₀) and hydrophobic (1,5-cyclooctadiene)dimethylplatinum(II) as the as structure-directing agent, tungsten precursor and platinum source, respectively. The Pt/Si-WO₃ NWIMSs exhibit a unique mesoporous structure consisting of 3D interwoven Si-doped WO₃ nanowires with surfaces homogeneously decorated by Pt nanoparticles. Because of the highly porous structure, excellent transport of carriers in nanowires, and rich WO₃/Pt active interfaces, the semiconductor gas sensors based on Pt/Si-WO₃ NWIMSs show excellent sensing properties toward ethanol at low temperature (100 °C) with high sensitivity (S = 93 vs 50 ppm), low detection limit (0.5 ppm), fast response-recovery speed (17-7 s), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability.

3D Printing-Enabled Nanoparticle Alignment: A Review of Mechanisms and Applications

3D printing (additive manufacturing (AM)) has enormous potential for rapid tooling and mass production due to its design flexibility and significant reduction of the timeline from design to manufacturing. The current state-of-the-art in 3D printing focuses on material manufacturability and engineering applications. However, there still exists the bottleneck of low printing resolution and processing rates, especially when nanomaterials need tailorable orders at different scales. An interesting phenomenon is the preferential alignment of nanoparticles that enhance material properties. Therefore, this review emphasizes the landscape of nanoparticle alignment in the context of 3D printing. Herein, a brief overview of 3D printing is provided, followed by a comprehensive summary of the 3D printing-enabled nanoparticle alignment in well-established and in-house customized 3D printing mechanisms that can lead to selective deposition and preferential orientation of nanoparticles. Subsequently, it is listed that typical applications that utilized the properties of ordered nanoparticles (e.g., structural composites, heat conductors, chemo-resistive sensors, engineered surfaces, tissue scaffolds, and actuators based on structural and functional property improvement). This review's emphasis is on the particle alignment methodology and the performance of composites incorporating aligned nanoparticles. In the end, significant limitations of current 3D printing techniques are identified together with future perspectives.

Atomically Thin Materials for Next-Generation Rechargeable Batteries

Atomically thin materials (ATMs) with thicknesses in the atomic scale (typically <5 nm) offer inherent advantages of large specific surface areas, proper crystal lattice distortion, abundant surface dangling bonds, and strong in-plane chemical bonds, making them ideal 2D platforms to construct high-performance electrode materials for rechargeable metal-ion batteries, metal-sulfur batteries, and metal-air batteries. This work reviews the synthesis and electronic property tuning of state-of-the-art ATMs, including graphene and graphene derivatives (GE/GO/rGO), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), phosphorene, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), transition metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides (MXenes), transition metal oxides (TMOs), and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for constructing next-generation high-energy-density and high-power-density rechargeable batteries to meet the needs of the rapid developments in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and smart electricity grids. We also present our viewpoints on future challenges and opportunities of constructing efficient ATMs for next-generation rechargeable batteries.

Block Copolymer Stabilized Liquid Nanodroplets Facilitate Efficient Triplet Fusion-Based Photon Upconversion in Solid Polymer Matrices

Sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion is a photophysical process that affords anti-Stokes-shifted emission after annihilation of two metastable triplet excitons of an emitter dye and the formation of a fluorescent singlet state. While this process readily occurs in solutions under conditions where the mobility of the dye molecules is high, particular architectures are required to facilitate efficient energy transfers in solid polymers. One possibility is to incorporate liquid upconverting domains into solid polymer matrices. Another possibility is to reduce the intermolecular distance between the dyes below the Dexter radius, allowing exciton migration via triplet hopping. We introduce herein nanostructured materials that combine both of these features. These glassy nanostructured polymer systems contain liquid upconverting nanodroplets that are stabilized with a block copolymer surfactant and are fabricated under ambient conditions in a facile one-step protocol. The dyes concentrate in the nanostructured liquid domains, and this enables hopping-mediated ET and TTA between the dyes and leads to an upconversion efficiency of ∼20%.

Insights into the Formation Pathway of Templated Ordered Nanostructured Carbonaceous Particles under Hydrothermal Conditions

Ordered nanostructured materials and their porous counterparts are important for numerous applications in sorption and separation sciences, electrochemistry, catalysis, and photonics. They can be synthesized by introducing surfactant or amphiphilic polymer template(s) into the condensation stage of a developing solid. Understanding the pathways involved in the formation of these materials is of great interest and will help in the development of future synthesis schemes for designing nanomaterials with controlled nanostructures, pore sizes and shapes, and particle morphologies. In this work, the formation pathway of carbonaceous particles, with cubic-type ordered nanostructures, in the polymer amphiphile-templated hydrothermal condensation of sugar was investigated. A detailed transmission electron microscopy study revealed the initial formation of ∼50 nm sized nanoparticles and the structure attributable to assembled nanoparticles to form larger microparticle volumes. Small-angle X-ray scattering analysis showed the time-dependent development of the ordered structures in the carbonaceous particles. A dynamic stabilization-destabilization of the ordered phase was suggested through the analysis of the liquid crystalline gel-like matrix. The growing carbonaceous body inherited the final liquid crystalline phase, giving the microparticles a well-ordered cubic nanostructure. An additional internal domain texture was also revealed inside the microparticles. The proposed pathway will contribute toward establishing strategies for precisely manipulating nanostructured bodies as well as acquiring an in-depth understanding of the templated precipitations, including those in the natural systems.

Lamellar carbon-aluminosilicate nanocomposites with macroscopic orientation

Novel preparative approaches towards lamellar nanocomposites of carbon and inorganic materials are relevant for a broad range of technological applications. Here, we describe how to utilize the co-assembly of a liquid-crystalline hexaphenylene amphiphile and an aluminosilicate precursor to prepare carbon-aluminosilicate nanocomposites with controlled lamellar orientation and macroscopic order. To this end, the shear-induced alignment of a precursor phase of the two components resulted in thin films comprising lamellae with periodicities on the order of the molecular length scale, an "edge-on" orientation relative to the substrate and parallel to the shearing direction with order on the centimeter length scale. The lamellar structure, orientation, and macroscopic alignment were preserved in the subsequent pyrolysis that yielded the corresponding carbon-aluminosilicate nanocomposites.

Ordered Mesoporous Silica Pyrolyzed from Single-Source Self-Assembled Organic-Inorganic Giant Surfactants

We report the preparation of hexagonal mesoporous silica from single-source giant surfactants constructed via dihydroxyl-functionlized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (DPOSS) heads and a polystyrene (PS) tail. After thermal annealing, the obtained well-ordered hexagonal hybrid was pyrolyzed to afford well-ordered mesoporous silica. A high porosity (e.g., 581 m²/g) and a uniform and narrow pore size distribution (e.g., 3.3 nm) were achieved. Mesoporous silica in diverse shapes and morphologies were achieved by processing the precursor. When the PS tail length was increased, the pore size expanded accordingly. Moreover, such pyrolyzed, ordered mesoporous silica can help to increase both efficiency and stability of nanocatalysts.

Interface Assembly to Magnetic Mesoporous Organosilica Microspheres with Tunable Surface Roughness as Advanced Catalyst Carriers and Adsorbents

Surface roughness endows microspheres with unique and useful features and properties like improved hydrophobicity, enhanced adhesion, improved stability at the oil-water interface, and superior cell uptake properties, thus expanding their applications. Core-shell magnetic mesoporous microspheres combine the advantages of magnetic particles and mesoporous materials and have exhibited wide applications in adsorption, catalysis, separation, and drug delivery. In this study, virus-like rough core-shell-shell-structured magnetic mesoporous organosilica (denoted as RMMOS) microspheres with controllable surface roughness were successfully obtained through electrostatic interaction-directed interface co-assembly. The obtained RMMOS microspheres possess uniform spherical morphology with tunable surface roughness, radially aligned pore channels with a diameter of 3.0 nm in the outer organosilica shell, high specific surface area (396 m²/g), large pore volume (0.66 cm³/g), high magnetization (35.1 emu/g), and superparamagnetic property. The RMMOS microspheres serve as desirable candidates to support Au nanoparticles (2.5 nm) and show superior catalytic activity and excellent stability in hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol. In addition, the RMMOS microspheres modified with carboxylic groups further displayed promising performance in convenient adsorption removal of dyes in polluted water.

Molecular Recognition Driven Bioinspired Directional Supramolecular Assembly of Amphiphilic (Macro)molecules and Proteins

Bioinspired self-assembly has been explored with diverse synthetic scaffolds, among which amphiphiles are perhaps the most extensively studied systems. Classical surfactants or amphiphilic block copolymers, depending on the hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance, produce distinct nanostructures, which hold promise for applications ranging from biology to materials sciences. Nevertheless, their immiscibility-driven aggregation does not provide the opportunity to precisely regulate the internal order, morphology, or functional group display, which is highly desirable, especially in the context of biological applications.A new class of amphiphiles have emerged in the recent past in which the hydrophilic segment(s) is appended with a hydrophobic supramolecular-structure-directing-unit (SSDU), consisting of a π-conjugated chromophore and a H-bonding group. Self-recognition of the SSDU by attractive directional interactions governs the supramolecular assembly, which is fundamentally different than the repulsive solvent-immiscibility driven aggregation of traditional amphiphiles. Such SSDU-appended hydrophilic polymers exhibit entropy-driven highly stable self-assembly producing distinct nanostructures depending on the H-bonding functional group. For example, polymers with the hydrazide-functionalized SSDU attached form a polymersome, while in a sharp contrast, the same polymers when connected to an amide containing SSDU produce a cylindrical micelle via a spherical-micelle intermediate. This relationship holds true for a series of SSDU-attached hydrophilic polymers irrespective of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance or chemical structure, indicating that the supramolecular-assembly is primarily controlled by the specific molecular-recognition motif of the SSDU, instead of the packing parameter-based norms. Beyond synthetic polymers, SSDU-attached proteins also exhibit similar molecular-recognition driven self-assembly as well as coassembly with SSDU-attached polymers or hydrophilic wedges, producing multi-stimuli-responsive nanostructures in which the protein gains remarkable protection from thermal denaturation or enzymatic hydrolysis and exhibits redox-responsive enzymatic activity.Furthermore, SSDU-derived bola-shape π-amphiphiles have been recognized as a useful scaffold for the synthesis of unsymmetric polymersomes, rarely reported in the literature. The building block consists of a hydrophobic naphthalene-diimide (NDI) π-system attached to a hydrophilic functional group (ionic or nonionic) and a nonionic wedge on its two opposite arms. Extended H-bonding among the hydrazide groups, placed only on one side of the central chromophore by design, ensures stacking of the NDIs with parallel orientation and induces a preferred direction of curvature so that the H-bonded chain and consequently the functional groups attached to the same side remain at the inner-wall of the supramolecular polymersome. Automatically, the functional groups, located on the other side, are displayed at the outer surface. This design works for different amphiphiles, which by virtue of efficient and predictable functional group display, strongly influences the multivalent binding with different biological targets resulting in efficient enzyme inhibition, glycocluster effect, or antibacterial activity, depending on the nature of the functional group. By taking advantage of the electron accepting nature of the NDI, electron rich pyrene-containing amphiphiles can be costacked in alternating sequence, producing temperature and redox-responsive supramolecular polymers with NDI/pyrene stoichiometry-dependent morphology, lower critical solution temperature (LCST), functional group display, and antibacterial activity.

Arsenic(III)-Capped 12-Tungsto-2-Arsenates(III) [M2(AsIIIW6O25)2(AsIIIOH)x]n- (M = CrIII, FeIII, ScIII, InIII, TiIV, MnII) and Their Magnetic Properties

Six arsenic(III)-capped 12-tungsto-2-arsenates(III) of the type [M₂(As^IIIW₆O₂₅)₂(As^IIIOH)_x]^n- (M = Cr^III, 1; Fe^III, 2; Sc^III, 3; In^III, 4; Ti^IV, 5; Mn^II, 6) have been synthesized in aqueous medium by direct reaction of the elements using a one-pot strategy and structurally characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, single-crystal XRD, and elemental analysis. Polyanions 1-6 are comprised of two octahedrally coordinated guest metal ions M sandwiched between two {AsW₆} units, resulting in a structure with C_2h point-group symmetry. Polyanions 1-5 contain tri- and tetravalent metal ion guests M (M = Cr^III, Fe^III, Sc^III, In^III, and Ti^IV, respectively), and they have one {As^IIIOH} group grafted on each {AsW₆} unit, whereas the divalent Mn^II-containing derivative 6 has two such {As^IIIOH} groups grafted on each {AsW₆} unit. Magnetic studies on polyanions 3-5 over the temperature range 1.8-295 K and magnetic fields of 0-7 T confirmed that they are diamagnetic. On the other hand, polyanions 1, 2, and 6 are strongly magnetic and follow the Curie-Weiss law above 30 K. The susceptibility plots of 1 and 6 exhibit broad peaks suggesting short-range antiferromagnetic ordering, while the very weak antiferromagnetic ordering of 2 is overshadowed by traces of a paramagnetic impurity. The magnetization data of 1, 2, and 6 at 1.8 K over 0-7 T were analyzed by using the Heisenberg exchange procedure. Small (negative) values of the obtained J values help in understanding the absence of long-range antiferromagnetic ordering.

Graphene-Based Two-Dimensional Mesoporous Materials: Synthesis and Electrochemical Energy Storage Applications

Graphene (G)-based two dimensional (2D) mesoporous materials combine the advantages of G, ultrathin 2D morphology, and mesoporous structures, greatly contributing to the improvement of power and energy densities of energy storage devices. Despite considerable research progress made in the past decade, a complete overview of G-based 2D mesoporous materials has not yet been provided. In this review, we summarize the synthesis strategies for G-based 2D mesoporous materials and their applications in supercapacitors (SCs) and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The general aspect of synthesis procedures and underlying mechanisms are discussed in detail. The structural and compositional advantages of G-based 2D mesoporous materials as electrodes for SCs and LIBs are highlighted. We provide our perspective on the opportunities and challenges for development of G-based 2D mesoporous materials. Therefore, we believe that this review will offer fruitful guidance for fabricating G-based 2D mesoporous materials as well as the other types of 2D heterostructures for electrochemical energy storage applications.
