Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) "face-to-face" heterojunctions promote interfacial charge transfer and separation in composite photocatalysts. Here, we report an efficient 2D/2D step-scheme (S-scheme) photocatalyst composed of Bi2MoO6/Zn3V2O8 (BMO/ZVO), which has been designed and prepared via the self-assembly of BMO and ZVO nanoflakes. The heterojunction with an optimized composition of 30% BMO/ZVO showed extended light absorption capacity and enhanced separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation on work function and charge density revealed the presence of a built-in electric field at the interface region, which should facilitate the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. This work showed that it is essential to select two photocatalysts with interlaced band arrangement and to fine-tune the heterojunction interface for the preparation of S-scheme heterojunctions to achieve high photocatalytic efficiency.

Abstract
The manipulation of oxygen vacancies (OVs) in metal oxides has progressively emerged as a versatile strategy for improving their catalytic performance. In this study, we aim to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of cerium oxide (CeO2) by doping heteroatoms (Fe, Co, Ni) to generate additional OVs. We systematically analyzed both the morphology and electronic structure of the obtained CeO2 catalysts. The experimental results revealed the self-assembly of two-dimensional (2D) CeO2 nanosheets, with an approximate thickness of ∼1.7 nm, into 2D nanosheet assemblies (NSAs). Moreover, the incorporation of heteroatoms into the CeO2 matrix promoted the formation of OVs, resulting in a significant enhancement of the OER performance of CeO2. Among them, the Co-doped CeO2 NSAs sample displayed the highest activity and durability, with almost negligible activity loss during extended operating periods. The roles of heteroatom doping in improving OER activity were explored by DFT calculations. The produced OVs improve the adsorption of hydroxyl groups (OH-), promote the deprotonation process, and increase more active sites. These findings suggest that doping CeO2 with heteroatoms is a promising strategy for improving electrocatalytic OER activity, with great potential for the development of clean energy technologies, including but not limited to water splitting and fuel cells.

Abstract
The green synthesis process of photocatalytic ammonia production has received more and more attentions. Herein, a Z-scheme heterojunction with all-solid-state structures is constructed, in which carbon dots can act as electron transferring mediators. The photocatalytic measurement shows that the modified photocatalysts exhibit much higher activities, in which the ammonia production rates can reach above 232 µmol·gcal-1·h-1 under the light irradiation. The improved catalytic properties can be credited to the significantly increased number of photoinduced oxygen vacancies, the excellent visible-light adsorption abilities and photogenerated electron-hole separation efficiencies for the carbon dots bridged heterostructures. More hydroxyl and superoxide radicals can be simultaneously produced in the composites. This work provides reasonable guidance for applications in photocatalytic ammonia synthesis and a promising construction strategy of efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts.

Abstract
In the existing eco-crisis, designing and engineering an efficient as well as water stable photocatalyst for energy conversion and pollutant abatement remains crucial. In this regard, a mixed linker type zirconium metal organic framework (Zr-MOF) with terepthalic acid based ditopic linkers were utilized to design a single component photocatalyst through single step solvothermal method to utilize photons from visible light illumination towards hydrogen energy (H2) production and Tetracycline Hydrochloride (TCH) degradation. The one pot synthesized mixed linker based Zr-MOF displays visible light absorption through band gap tuning, superior exciton segregation and oxygen vacancy that cumulatively supports the enhancement in the photocatalytic output with respect to their pristine counterparts. Additionally, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, optical and electrochemical studies strongly reinforces the above claims. The prepared mixed linker Zr-MOF showed superior photocatalytic H2 evolution performance of 247.88 µmol h-1 (apparent conversion efficiency; ACE = 1.9%) that is twice than its pristine Zr-MOFs. Moreover, in TCH degradation, the mixed linker MOF displays an enhanced efficacy of 91.8 % and adopts pseudo-first order type kinetics with a rate constant value of 0.032. Typically, the active species participating for the TCH photo-degradation follows the order of hydroxyl (OH.) < superoxide (O2.-) radicals. Consequently, the mixed linker Zr-MOF could be effectively used as a robust photocatalyst exhibiting boosted TCH degradation and H2 production.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is considered to be an effective way to remove organic pollutants, but the key to photocatalysis is finding a high-efficiency and stable photocatalyst. 2D materials-based heterojunction has aroused widespread concerns in photocatalysis because of its merits in more active sites, adjustable band gaps and shorter charge transfer distance. Among various 2D heterojunction systems, 2D/2D heterojunction with a face-to-face contact interface is regarded as a highly promising photocatalyst. Due to the strong coupling interface in 2D/2D heterojunction, the separation and migration of photoexcited electron-hole pairs are facilitated, which enhances the photocatalytic performance. Thus, the design of 2D/2D heterojunction can become a potential model for expanding the application of photocatalysis in the removal of organic pollutants. Herein, in this review, we first summarize the fundamental principles, classification, and strategies for elevating photocatalytic performance. Then, the synthesis and application of the 2D/2D heterojunction system for the removal of organic pollutants are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives in 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts and their application for removing organic pollutants are presented.

Abstract
Fossil fuels as a double-edged sword are essential to daily life. However, the depletion of fossil fuel reservoirs has increased the search for alternative renewable energy sources to procure a more sustainable society. Accordingly, energy production through water splitting, CO2 reduction and N2 reduction via photocatalytic and electrocatalytic pathways is being contemplated as a greener methodology with zero environmental pollution. Owing to their atomic-level thickness, two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor catalysts have triggered the reawakening of interest in the field of energy and environmental applications. Among them, following the unconventional properties of graphene, 2D MoS2 has been widely investigated due to its outstanding optical and electronic properties. However, the photo/electrocatalytic performance of 2D-MoS2 is still unsatisfactory due to its low charge carrier density. Recently, the development of 2D/2D heterojunctions has evoked interdisciplinary research fascination in the scientific community, which can mitigate the shortcomings associated with 2D-MoS2. Following the recent research trends, the present review covers the recent findings and key aspects on the synthetic methods, fundamental properties and practical applications of semiconducting 2D-MoS2 and its heterostructures with other 2D materials such as g-C3N4, graphene, CdS, TiO2, MXene, black phosphorous, and boron nitride. Besides, this review details the viable application of these materials in the area of hydrogen energy production via the H2O splitting reaction, N2 fixation to NH3 formation and CO2 reduction to different value-added hydrocarbons and alcohol products through both photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. The crucial role of the interface together with the charge separation principle between two individual 2D structures towards achieving satisfactory activity for various applications is presented. Overall, the current studies provide a snapshot of the recent breakthroughs in the development of various 2D/2D-based catalysts in the field of energy production, delivering opportunities for future research.
