Conjugated dual size effect of core-shell particles synergizes bimetallic catalysis

Core-shell bimetallic nanocatalysts have attracted long-standing attention in heterogeneous catalysis. Tailoring both the core size and shell thickness to the dedicated geometrical and electronic properties for high catalytic reactivity is important but challenging. Here, taking Au@Pd core-shell catalysts as an example, we disclose by theory that a large size of Au core with a two monolayer of Pd shell is vital to eliminate undesired lattice contractions and ligand destabilizations for optimum benzyl alcohol adsorption. A set of Au@Pd/SiO₂ catalysts with various core sizes and shell thicknesses are precisely fabricated. In the benzyl alcohol oxidation reaction, we find that the activity increases monotonically with the core size but varies nonmontonically with the shell thickness, where a record-high activity is achieved on a Au@Pd catalyst with a large core size of 6.8 nm and a shell thickness of ~2-3 monolayers. These findings highlight the conjugated dual particle size effect in bimetallic catalysis.

Isoprene selective hydrogenation using AgCu-promoted Pd nanoalloys

Alloying is an effective approach to improve the catalysis performance of Pd-based catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of diolefins towards monoolefines. Herein, PdAgCu ternary nanoalloy catalysts were synthesised by a stepwise impregnation method for isoprene selective hydrogenation. The addition of a moderate amount of Ag and Cu to Pd significantly enhances the isoamylene selectivity in the isoprene hydrogenation, and decreases the non-desired over-hydrogenation. In addition, the loading molar ratio of PdAgCu with 3 : 2 : 3 as the optimal ternary nanoalloy composition maximizes the isoprene conversion (98%) and the monoolefins yield (92%). The surface structure of the catalyst was probed using H₂-TPR, TEM, XRD, and XPS characterization methods, and it was confirmed that the surface Pd composition ratio between the metallic and oxidized states shows significant effects on the monoolefines yield. This work demonstrates the advantages of PdAgCu ternary nanoalloy catalysts for isoprene selective hydrogenation, which also provides guidelines for the development of other Pd-based ternary nanoalloys for diolefins selective hydrogenation.

Comparative Study of Pd-Ni Bimetallic Catalysts Supported on UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2 in Selective 1,3-Butadiene Hydrogenation

Selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene (BD) is regarded as the most promising route for removing BD from butene streams. Bimetallic Pd-Ni catalysts with changed Pd/Ni molar ratios and monometallic Pd catalysts were synthesized using two differently structured metal-organic framework supports: UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH₂. The effects of the structure of support and the molar ratio of Pd/Ni on the catalytic property of selective BD hydrogenation were studied. The Pd-Ni bimetallic supported catalysts, PdNi/UiO-66 (1:1) and PdNi/UiO-66-NH₂ (1:1), exhibited fine catalytic property at low temperature. Compared with UiO-66, UiO-66-NH₂ with a certain number of alkaline sites could reduce the catalytic activity for the BD hydrogenation reaction. However, the alkaline environment of UiO-66-NH₂ is helpful to improve the butene selectivity. PdNi/UiO-66-NH₂ (1:1) catalyst presented better stability than PdNi/UiO-66 (1:1) under the reaction conditions, caused by the strong interaction between the -NH₂ groups of UiO-66-NH₂ and PdNi NPs. Moreover, the PdNi/UiO-66-NH₂ (1:1) catalyst presented good reproducibility in the hydrogenation of BD. These findings afford a beneficial guidance for the design and preparation of efficient catalysts for selective BD hydrogenation.

One-pot, ligand-free, room-temperature synthesis of Au/Pd/ZnO nanoclusters with ultra-low noble metal loading and synergistically improved photocatalytic performances

Au/Pd/ZnO nanoclusters with ultra-low noble metal loadings were prepared by a one-step and ligand-free method at room temperature. HRTEM, ICP-MS, XPS, and elemental mapping analysis confirmed that the obtained Au/Pd/ZnO nanoclusters were composed of ZnO nanoclusters decorated with well-dispersed AuPd nanoparticles. Au/Pd/ZnO nanoclusters exhibited higher photocatalytic activity compared with those of pristine ZnO, Au/ZnO and Pd/ZnO. Moreover, the high catalytic activity of Au/Pd/ZnO nanoclusters could be maintained even after 5 cycles of photocatalytic reaction. A mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic performance was also suggested, which was in light of the synergistic effects of the SPR effect from Au and the improved photogenerated charge carrier separation from Pd.

Bimetallic Au–Pd alloy nanoparticles supported on MIL-101(Cr) as highly efficient catalysts for selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene

Gold–palladium (Au–Pd) bimetallic nanoparticle (NP) catalysts supported on MIL-101(Cr) with Au : Pd mole ratios ranging from 1 : 3 to 3 : 1 were prepared through coimpregnation and H₂ reduction. Au–Pd NPs were homogeneously distributed on the MIL-101(Cr) with mean particle sizes of 5.6 nm. EDS and XPS analyses showed that bimetallic Au–Pd alloys were formed in the Au(2)Pd(1)/MIL-101(Cr). The catalytic performance of the catalysts was explored in the selective 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation at 30–80 °C on a continuous fixed bed flow quartz reactor. The bimetallic Au–Pd alloy particles stabilized by MIL-101(Cr) presented improved catalytic performance. The as-synthesized bimetallic Au(2)Pd(1)/MIL-101(Cr) with 2 : 1 Au : Pd mole ratio showed the best balance between the activity and butene selectivity in the selective 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation. The Au–Pd bimetallic-supported catalysts can be reused in at least three runs. The work affords a reference on the utilization of a MOF and alloy nanoparticles to develop high-efficiency catalysts.
