Abstract
Reaction of lithium 1,3-diamidopropane Li2(TripNCN) (TripNCN=[{(Trip)NCH2}2CH2]2-, Trip=2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl) with BeBr2(OEt2)2 gave the diamido beryllium complex, [(TripNCN)Be(OEt2)]. Deprotonation reactions between the bulkier 1,3-diaminopropane (TCHPNCN)H2 (TCHPNCN=[{(TCHP)NCH2}2CH2]2-, TCHP=2,4,6-tricyclohexylphenyl) and magnesium alkyls afforded the adduct complexes [(TCHPNCN)Mg(OEt2)] and [(TCHPNCN)Mg(THF)2], depending on the reaction conditions employed. Treating [(TCHPNCN)Mg(THF)2] with the N-heterocyclic carbene :C{(MeNCMe)2} (TMC) gave [(TCHPNCN)Mg(TMC)2] via substitution of the THF ligands. Reactions of (ArNCN)H2 (Ar=Trip or TCHP) with Mg{CH2(SiMe3)}2, in the absence of Lewis bases, yielded the N-bridged dimers [{(ArNCN)Mg}2]. Salt metathesis reactions between alkali metal salts M2(TCHPNCN) (M=Li or K) and CaI2 or SrI2 led to the THF adduct compounds [(TCHPNCN)Ca(THF)3] and [(TCHPNCN)Sr(THF)4], the differing number of THF ligands in which is a result of the different sizes of the metals involved. The described complexes hold potential as precursors to kinetically protected, low oxidation state group 2 metal species.

Abstract
Reduction of [Mg(NON)]2 ([NON]2- = [O(SiMe2NDipp)2]2-, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) affords Mg(I) species containing NON- and NNO-ligands ([NNO]2- = [N(Dipp)SiMe2N(Dipp)SiMe2O]2-). The products of reactions with iPrNCNiPr and CO are consistent with the presence of reducing Mg(I) centres. Extraction with THF affords [K(THF)2]2[(NNO)Mg-Mg(NNO)] with a structurally characterised Mg-Mg bond that was examined using density functional theory.

Abstract
Numerous industrial processes utilise gaseous chemical feedstocks to produce useful chemical products. Atmospheric and other small molecule gases, including anthropogenic waste products (e.g. carbon dioxide), can be viewed as sustainable building blocks to access value-added chemical commodities and materials. While transition metal complexes have been well documented in the reduction and transformation of these substrates, molecular complexes of the terrestrially abundant alkaline earth metals have also demonstrated promise with remarkable reactivity reported towards an array of industrially relevant gases over the past two decades. This review covers low oxidation state and hydrido group 2 complexes and their role in the reduction and transformation of a selection of important gaseous substrates towards value-added chemical products.

Abstract
The bimetallic species, [{SiNDipp}MgNa]2 [{SiNDipp} = {CH2SiMe2N(Dipp)}2; (Dipp = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3)], is shown to be a potent reducing agent, able to effect one- or two-electron reduction of either dioxygen, TEMPO, anthracene, benzophenone, or diphenylacetylene. In most cases, the bimetallic reaction products imply that the dissimilar alkaline metal centers react with a level of cooperativity. EPR analysis of the benzophenone-derived reaction and the concurrent isolation of [{SiNDipp}Mg(OCPh2)2], however, illustrate that treatment with such reducible, but O-basic, species can also result in reactivity in which the metals provide independent reaction products. The notable E-stereochemistry of the diphenylacetylene reduction product prompted a computational investigation of the PhC≡CPh addition. This analysis invokes a series of elementary steps that necessitate ring-opening via Mg+ → Na+ amido group migration of the SiNDipp ligand, providing insight into the previously observed lability of the bidentate dianion and its consequent proclivity toward macrocyclization.

Abstract
Reduction of the magnesium(II) diamide [Mg(TripNON)] (TripNON = 4,5-bis(2,4,6-triisopropylanilido)-2,7-diethyl-9,9-dimethyl-xanthene) with 5% w/w K/KI leads to a good yield of a dianionic dimagnesium(I) species, as its potassium salt, [{K(TripNON)Mg}2]. An X-ray crystallographic analysis shows the molecule to contain a very long Mg-Mg bond (3.137(2) Å). The formation of [{K(TripNON)Mg}2] contrasts with a previously reported reduction of a magnesium(II) complex incorporating a bulkier diamide ligand, which instead afforded a magnesium-dinitrogen complex. In the current study, [{K(TripNON)Mg}2] has been shown to be a viable reagent for the reductive activation of CO, H2 and N2O.

Abstract
A heterobimetallic complex [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgLiCl(THF)]2 (1) supported by a dianionic double layer nitrogen-phosphorus ligand was synthesized by the reaction of H2L1 (H2L1 = MeN(CH2CH2NHPiPr)2) with MgCl2 in the presence of n-BuLi. Reactions of complex 1 with 2 equivalents of CuI, AgI and AuCl·SMe2 led to the formation of heterobimetallic clusters [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgCuI]2 (2), [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgAgI]2 (3) and [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgAuCl]2 (4), respectively. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis revealed that these complexes are dimers, which are composed of two [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2Mg] units connected by coinage metals (i.e., Cu, Ag, and Au). The reactivity of 1 was further investigated and it was found that complex 1 could react with 4 equivalents of MeI, giving a complex [CH3N(CH2CH2NPiPr2Me)2MgI]+[I]- (5), which can be viewed as a magnesium complex supported by a neutral double layer nitrogen-phosphorus ligand (CH3N(CH2CH2NPiPr2Me)2). Complex 1 could also react with 2 equivalents of NaNH2, leading to the isolation of an amido anion bridged magnesium-sodium heterobimetallic cluster [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgNaNH2]2 (6).

Abstract
Titanium compounds in low oxidation states are highly reducing species and hence powerful tools for the functionalization of small molecules. However, their potential has not yet been fully realized because harnessing these highly reactive complexes for productive reactivity is generally challenging. Advancing this field, herein we provide a detailed route for the formation of titanium(III) orthophenylendiamido (PDA) species using [LiBHEt3] as a reducing agent. Initially, the corresponding lithium PDA compounds [Li2(ArPDA)(thf)3] (Ar = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl (MesPDA), 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (iPrPDA)) are combined with [TiCl4(thf)2] to form the heterobimetallic complexes [{TiCl(ArPDA)}(μ-ArPDA){Li(thf)n}] (n = 1, Ar = iPr 3 and n = 2, Ar = Mes 4). Compound 4 evolves to species [Ti(MesPDA)2] (6) via thermal treatment. In contrast, the transformation of 3 into [Ti(iPrPDA)2] (5) only occurs in the presence of [LiNMe2], through a lithium-assisted process, as revealed by density functional theory (DFT). Finally, the Ti(IV) compounds 3-6 react with [LiBHEt3] to give rise to the Ti(III) species [Li(thf)4][Ti(ArPDA)2] (Ar = iPr 8, Mes 9). These low-valent compounds in combination with [PPN]Cl (PPN = bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium) are proved to be highly selective catalysts for the copolymerization of CO2 and cyclohexene epoxide. Reactions occur at 1 bar pressure with activity/selectivity levels similar to Salen-Cr(III) compounds.

Abstract
Sodium reduction of [{SiNDipp}Mg] [{SiNDipp} = {CH2SiMe2N(Dipp)}2; Dipp = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3] provides the Mg(I) species, [{SiNDipp}MgNa]2, in which the long Mg-Mg bond (>3.2 Å) is augmented by persistent Na-aryl interactions. Computational assessment indicates that this molecule is best considered to comprise a contiguous tetrametallic core, a viewpoint borne out by its reaction with CO, which results in ethynediolate formation mediated by the dissimilar metal centers.

Abstract
α-Diimine ligands, in particular 1,4-diazabutadiene (dad) and bis(iminoacenaphthene) (bian) derivatives, have been widely used for coordination with various metals, including main-group, transition, and lanthanide and actinide metals. In addition to their tunable steric and electronic properties, the dad and bian ligands are redox-active and can readily accept one or two electrons, converting into the radical-anionic (L˙-) or dianionic (enediamido, L2-) form, respectively. This non-innocence brings about rich electronic structures and properties of the ligands and complexes thereof. For example, the dad ligands in their three redox levels can effectively stabilize a series of metal centers in different oxidation states, including low-valent metals. Moreover, these ligands can serve as electron reservoirs and can participate in reactions toward other molecules with or without metals. Therefore, such ligands are extremely useful in the areas of low-valent complexes and small molecule activation. Herein, we will discuss the use of dad (and bian) ligands in the stabilization of metal-metal-bonded compounds, in particular those of main-group metals, as well as small molecule activation by these (low-valent) metal coordination species where the non-innocence of the ligands plays a key role.

Abstract
The dialanes [(dpp-Bian)Al-Al(dpp-Bian)] (1) and [(dpp-dad)Al(THF)-(THF)Al(dpp-dad)] (2) (dpp-Bian = 1,2-[(2,6-iPr2C6H3)NC]2C12H6, dpp-dad = [(2,6-iPr2C6H3)NC(CH3)]2) react with some isothiocyanates, isocyanates, and diphenylketene via [2 + 4] cycloaddition of the C═O or C═S bond across the C═C-N-Al fragment to afford complexes [L(X═C-Y)Al-Al(X═C-Y)L] with an intact Al-Al single bond (3, L = dpp-Bian, X = PhN, Y = O; 4, L = dpp-Bian, X = Ph2C, Y = O; 6, L = dpp-dad, X = BnN, Y = S; 7, L = dpp-dad, X = tBuN, Y = O; 8, L = dpp-dad, X = iPrN, Y = S; and 9, L = dpp-dad, X = CyN, Y = S). A mixed C═N and C═O mode cycloadduct, [(dpp-Bian)(TosN═C-O)Al-Al(TosN-C═O)(dpp-Bian)] 5, was obtained in the reaction of 1 with tosylisocyanate. Heating the solution of 3 resulted in a thermal transformation and a change of the cycloaddition mode from C═O to C═N to give the product [(dpp-Bian)(PhN-C═O)Al(O)Al(PhN-C═O)(dpp-Bian)] 10. The reduction of 7 and 8 with Na yielded the products [Na(THF)n]2[(dpp-dad-H)(X═C-Y)Al]2 (12, X = iPrN, Y = S, n = 2 and 13, X = tBuN, Y = O, n = 3) in which one of the methyl groups of the backbone of the initial dpp-dad ligand was dehydrogenated. When 2 was reacted with the bulky adamantyl isocyanate AdNCO, the C-C coupling of two substrates occurred to form 14 [(dpp-dad)Al(O═C-NAd)2Al(dpp-dad)] in which the coupled dianionic oxamide ligand bridged two Al atoms in a μ,η4-N,O/N,O mode. Moreover, in the presence of 2.0 equiv of Na metal, precursor 2 reacts with tBuNCS, p-TolylNCS, or Me3SiNCO, possibly through the reduced AlI intermediate, to yield the sulfur- or oxygen-bridged dimer [Na(solv)n]2[(dpp-dad)Al(μ-E)]2 (15, E = S, solv = THF, n = 3 and 16, E = O, solv = DME, n = 2) upon C═S or C═O bond cleavage. Dialane 1 reacts with dimethylsulfone to give a Lewis adduct [(dpp-Bian)(Me2SO2)Al]2 (17), which releases dimethylsulfone upon heating. The diamagnetic compounds 3-10 and 12-17 were characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy. The molecular structures of 3-17 were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Electronic structures of the compounds and possible isomers have been examined by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Gold intermetallic chemistry is very rich, covering different classes of compounds ranging from the Hume-Rothery to Zintl phases to polar intermetallics to quasicrystals. Au's relativistic effects are frequently mentioned as responsible for the peculiar structural and physical properties of its compounds, nonetheless the aspects of chemical bonding are far to be clearly understood. In this work, the La-Au-Mg system was targeted for the discovery of new gold intermetallics and their structural and chemical bonding characterization. Studies on solid state interactions resulted in the construction of a partial La-Au-Mg isothermal section at 400 °C. The high reactivity between the constituents is reflected by the formation of five intermetallic compounds in the concentration range of less than 50 at% of Au. A complete crystallographic study was conducted for four of them, namely La1.82Au3+xMg14.36-x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.90, hP42-3.64-CeMg10.3), La3Au4-xMg12+x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.75, hP38-Gd3Ru4Al12), LaAuMg2 (oS16-MgCuAl2) and LaAu1+xMg1-x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.15, hP9-ZrNiAl). A unifying description based on the different stacking sequences of equal slabs along the c-axis is proposed for these intermetallics. Chemical bonding in LaAuMg2 was studied by following the position space approach and including relativistic effects. Among the peculiarities of this LaMg2Au auride, there are two-atomic La-Au bonds showing a classical polar covalent character and that form distorted hexagonal planar layers and multi-atomic bonds involving Mg species. One of these is interpreted as a Mg-Mg bond supported by the neighbouring La and Au atoms, explaining the Mg reduced oxidation state (close to +1) in this compound.

Abstract
In the past two decades, the organometallic chemistry of the alkaline earth elements has experienced a renaissance due in part to developments in ligand stabilization strategies. In order to expand the scope of redox chemistry known for magnesium and beryllium, we have synthesized a set of reduced magnesium and beryllium complexes and compared their resulting structural and electronic properties. The carbene-coordinated alkaline earth-halides, (Et2CAAC)MgBr2 (1), (SIPr)MgBr2 (2), (Et2CAAC)BeCl2 (3), and (SIPr)BeCl2 (4) [Et2CAAC = diethyl cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbene; SIPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazole-2-ylidene] were combined with an α-diimine [2,2-bipyridine (bpy) or bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,4-diazabutadiene (DippDAB)] and the appropriate stoichiometric amount of potassium graphite to form singly- and doubly-reduced compounds (Et2CAAC)MgBr(DippDAB) (5), (Et2CAAC)MgBr(bpy) (6), (Et2CAAC)Mg(DippDAB) (7), (Et2CAAC)Be(bpy) (8), and (SIPr)Be(bpy) (9). The doubly-reduced compounds 7-9 exhibit substantial π-bonding interactions across the diimine core, metal center, and π-acidic carbene. Each complex was fully characterized by UV-vis, FT-IR, X-ray crystallography, 1H, 13C, and 9Be NMR, or EPR where applicable. We use these compounds to highlight the differences in the organometallic chemistry of the lightest alkaline earth metals, magnesium and beryllium, in an otherwise identical chemical environment.
