Fluorine-based Zn salan complexes

We synthesised and characterised the racemic and chiral versions of two Zn salan fluorine-based complexes from commercially available materials. The complexes are susceptible to absorbing H₂O from the atmosphere. In solution (DMSO-H₂O) and at the millimolar level, experimental and theoretical studies identify that these complexes exist in a dimeric-monomeric equilibrium. We also investigated their ability to sense amines via¹⁹F NMR. In CDCl₃ or d⁶-DMSO, strongly coordinating molecules (H₂O or DMSO) are the limiting factor in using these easy-to-make complexes as chemosensory platforms since their exchange with analytes requires an extreme excess of the latter.

Chiral Co3Y Propeller-Shaped Chemosensory Platforms Based on 19F-NMR

Two propeller-shaped chiral Co^III₃Y^III complexes built from fluorinated ligands are synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD), IR, UV-vis, circular dichroism (CD), elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), electron spray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), and NMR (¹H, ¹³C, and ¹⁹F). This work explores the sensing and discrimination abilities of these complexes, thus providing an innovative sensing method using a ¹⁹F NMR chemosensory system and opening new directions in 3d/4f chemistry. Control experiments and theoretical studies shed light on the sensing mechanism, while the scope and limitations of this method are discussed and presented.

Syntheses of Heterometallic Neodymium-Zinc Complexes and Their Performance in the Copolymerization of CO2 and Cyclohexene Oxide

A series of Nd-Zn heterometallic complexes bearing o-phenylenediamine-bridged tris(phenolato) ligands (L) were synthesized and characterized. By tuning the backbones of ancillary tris(phenolato) ligands and initiating benzyloxy groups, a Nd-Zn heterometallic complex 12 (^ClLNdZnOBn^CF3) was found to be highly active for the copolymerization of CO₂ and cyclohexene oxide (CHO) to produce perfect alternating poly(cyclohexene carbonate) with a high turnover frequency up to 5640 h^-1 under the polymerization of 90 °C and 20 bar CO₂ pressure. The kinetics study showed that CO₂/CHO copolymerization catalyzed by 12 was the first order dependence of 12 and CHO concentration and the zero-order dependence of CO₂ pressure. The reaction of 12 with CO₂ generated a carbonate-coordinated [NdZnNd] trinuclear complex 13, which was believed to be the key intermediate to initiate CO₂/CHO copolymerization. On the basis of some experiments, a plausible synergistic polymerization mechanism was proposed.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Study of Amine-Bridged Bis(phenolato) Co(II) and Co(II/III)-M(I) Complexes (M = K or Na)

Co(II) complexes 1-3 bearing amine-bridged bis(phenolato) complexes have been synthesized through reactions of bis(phenols) with CoCl₂ or Co(OAc)₂. Oxidation of the Co(II) complex with air resulted in partial oxidation, generating mixed valence Co(II/III) complexes 4 and 5. In addition, due to the presence of alkali compounds (KOAc and NaOMe), 4 and 5 formed as Co-alkali metal heterometallic complexes, which are the first example of mixed valence Co(II/III)-M(I) (M = K or Na) complexes. Complexes 1-5 showed good activity in the cycloaddition of epoxides and CO₂ under atmospheric pressure, generating cyclic carbonates in 40-99% yields. Co(II/III)-Na(I) complex 5 performed better in reactions of bulkier substrates, underlining the enhanced activity of mixed valence Co-alkali metal heterometallic complexes. On the contrary, complex 5 showed limited activity in copolymerization of epoxide and CO₂.

Advances in heterometallic ring-opening (co)polymerisation catalysis

Truly sustainable plastics require renewable feedstocks coupled with efficient production and end-of-life degradation/recycling processes. Some of the most useful degradable materials are aliphatic polyesters, polycarbonates and polyamides, which are often prepared via ring-opening (co)polymerisation (RO(CO)P) using an organometallic catalyst. While there has been extensive research into ligand development, heterometallic cooperativity offers an equally promising yet underexplored strategy to improve catalyst performance, as heterometallic catalysts often exhibit significant activity and selectivity enhancements compared to their homometallic counterparts. This review describes advances in heterometallic RO(CO)P catalyst design, highlighting the overarching structure-activity trends and reactivity patterns to inform future catalyst design.

Dinuclear helicate or mononuclear pincer lanthanide complexes from one ligand: stereo-controlled assembly and catalysis

By varying the metal/ligand ratio, either dinuclear triple helicate or mononuclear pincer can be stereo-selectively obtained from the same chiral ligand. Their catalytic properties have been demonstrated with the asymmetric FC alkylation reactions.

Rare-Earth Metal Complexes Supported by Polydentate Phenoxy-Type Ligand Platforms: C-H Activation Reactivity and CO2/Epoxide Copolymerization Catalysis

Mono- and dinuclear group 3 metal complexes incorporating polydentate bis(imino)phenoxy {N²O}^- and bis(amido)phenoxy {N²O}^3- ligands were synthesized by alkane elimination reactions from the tris(alkyl) M(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(THF)₂ and M(CH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂)₃ (M = Sc, Y) precursors. Complex 1a-Y was used for the selective C-H activation of 2-phenylpyridine at the 2'-phenyl position affording the corresponding bis(aryl) product 3a-Y, which was found to be reacted reluctantly with weak electrophiles (styrene, imines, hydrosilanes). The mechanism of formation of 3a-Y was established by DFT calculations, which also corroborated high stability of the complex toward insertion of styrene, apparently stemming from the inability to form the corresponding adduct. Copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide and CO₂ promoted by 1a-Y (0.1-0.5 mol %) was demonstrated to proceed under mild conditions (toluene, 70 °C, P_CO2 = 12 bar) giving polycarbonates with high efficiency (maximal TON of 460) and selectivity (97-99% of carbonate units).

Carbonyl group and carbon dioxide activation by rare-earth-metal complexes

The rare-earth elements (Ln = Sc, Y, La-Lu) are widely used in stoichiometric and catalytic carbonyl group transformations. Sufficient availability, non-toxicity, high oxophilicity, tunable ion size/Lewis acidity and enhanced ligand exchangeability have been major driving factors for their successful implementation. Routinely employed reagents for stoichiometric carbonyl group transformations are divalent ytterbium and samarium compounds (e.g., ketone reduction), bimetallic CeCl3/LiR (C-C coupling), or ceric ammonium nitrate CAN (cyclic ketone oxidation). Rare-earth-metal triflates, and in particular Sc(OTf)3, are prominent examples of Lewis acid catalysts for versatile use in organic synthesis (e.g., Aldol and Michael reactions). Moreover, Ln(ii) and Ln(iii) complexes efficiently catalyze the (co)polymerization of carbonyl group-containing monomers including lactones, lactides, acrylates, and carbon dioxide. Featuring the most notorious greenhouse gas, CO2 is currently assessed as a cheap, abundant, and non-toxic C1 building block. Ln(iii) complexes are not only capable of efficient CO2 capture via reversible insertion but also of CO2 activation for catalytic conversions (copolymerization/cycloaddition with epoxides). This perspective focuses on structurally elucidated Ln complexes resulting from ketone or carbonyl derivative activation/insertion as well as carbon dioxide insertion products. The respective compounds will be sorted by structural motifs and, if applicable, details on reactivity and feasibility of catalytic reactions are presented. The article is subdivided in three parts: (i) donor and insertion products of ketones and aldehydes, (ii) redox-enhanced activation of carbonyl derivatives, and (iii) CO2 insertion/redox products and homogeneous catalytic conversion.
