Abstract
Owing to the large-scale consumption of pesticides and their potential threats to the environment and human health, the development of sensing materials for pesticides has attracted considerable attention in recent years. In this work, a novel Cd(II)-based coordination polymer (CP) with the formula [Cd(H2O)2(L)]·DMF (Cd-1, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, H2L = 4,4'-[(2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene)di-2,1-ethenediyl]bis-benzoic acid) was synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Structural analysis revealed that coordination between central Cd2+ cations and the ligand L2- formed two-dimensional (2D) networks, which were further assembled by noncovalent hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular framework. Through ultrasonic treatment in isopropyl alcohol, Cd-1 was exfoliated to afford an ultrathin CP-based 2D nanosheet (Cd-1-NS) with a thickness of less than 1.8 nm. Compared to the bulk materials, the prepared Cd-1-NS exhibited enhanced fluorescence emission properties and superior sensing performance toward glyphosate (Glyph) in water with high selectivity, sensitivity, anti-interference, fast response, and good recyclability via the turn-off effect. The limit of detection (LOD) of Cd-1-NS for Glyph was as low as 41 nM (7 ppb) in the low-concentration range of 0-2.4 μM. In addition, the Cd-1-NS also showed excellent practicability and reliability for the detection of Glyph in real samples, including lake water, tap water, cabbage, and watermelon skin, and could realize the rapid visualized sensing of Glyph residues on the surfaces of vegetables and fruits.

Abstract
Pyrazole-assisted tetranuclear microporous polyoxovanadates(III) (POVs) (NH4)2K2[V4(μ2-OH)4(ox)4(pz)4]·9H2O (1, ox = oxalate and pz = pyrazole) and (NH4)2Na2[V4(μ2-OH)4(ox)4(4-mpz)4]·7H2O (2, 4-mpz = 4-methylpyrazole) have been constructed in reduced media, along with their triazole neutral hexa- and octanuclear products K2[V6(μ2-OH)6(ox)6(Hdatrz)6]Cl2·29.5H2O (3) and [V8(μ2-OH)8(SO3)8(Hdatrz)8]·38H2O (4, Hdatrz = 1H-1,2,4-triazole-3,5-diamine) successively. Both polyanionic structures of 1 and 2 share similar inorganic building blocks that consist of regular {V4(μ2-OH)4} skeletons with an inner diameter of 2.8 Å, while a paddle wheel-shaped cluster 3 contains a {V6(μ2-OH)6} skeleton with two chlorides encapsulated around the center of the ring, occupying a hole of 3.7 Å. An interesting isolated intrinsic polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (POMOF) 4 exists as an octanuclear petaloid-like skeleton {V8(μ2-OH)8(SO3)8} with an inner diameter of 5.2 Å. Bond valence sum calculations manifest that all V ions have severely reduced +3 oxidation states in 1-4, which are supported by charge balance, structural and magnetic data. Moreover, gas adsorptions indicate that 1, 2 and 4 can adsorb CO2 and O2 more favorably than N2, CH4 and H2 gases. Compared with 1 and 2, due to the functionalization of microchannels with Lewis base amino and hydroxy groups and uncoordinated azolate N-donors inside POMOF 4, it should have notable affinities toward CO2 adsorption.

Abstract
Facile and rapid detection of residual organic pesticides on the fruits and vegetables has recently drawn increased attention in the food safety field. Herein, a surfactant-assisted solvothermal route with subsequent post-modification was designed for the preparation of Eu3+-functionated Zn-BDC ultrathin nanosheets (labeled as Eu3+@Zn-MOF-NS, BDC: 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) with the thickness of 5 nm. The as-obtained Eu3+@Zn-MOF-NS could be homogeneously dispersed in aqueous systems to form a highly-stable collosol. Under the UV excitation of 325 nm, the as-obtained Eu3+@Zn-MOF-NS displayed red photoluminescence emission of Eu3+ ions, which could be notably quenched by an organochlorine pesticide, 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline (DCNA), without interferences from ions, organic small molecules, and other pesticides. The detection limit and Ksv were 0.17 μM (35 ppb) and 3.2 × 105 M-1 in the water system, respectively. Moreover, the present 2D Eu3+@Zn-MOF sensor was also employed for the detection of DCNA in Chaohu Lake water and tap water and in apple, cabbage, and pakchoi samples with the relative standard deviation (RSD) ranging from 4.74 to 9.77%. Further investigations revealed that the competitive absorption between DCNA and the as-obtained Eu3+@Zn-MOF-NS resulted in the fluorescence quenching of the probe.

Abstract
Agrochemicals, which are crucial to meet the world food qualitative and quantitative demand, are compounds used to kill pests (insects, fungi, rodents, or unwanted plants). Regrettably, there are some important issues associated with their widespread and extensive use (e.g., contamination, bioaccumulation, and development of pest resistance); thus, a reduced and more controlled use of agrochemicals and thorough detection in food, water, soil, and fields are necessary. In this regard, the development of new functional materials for the efficient application, detection, and removal of agrochemicals is a priority. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with exceptional sorptive, recognition capabilities, and catalytical properties have very recently shown their potential in agriculture. This Review emphasizes the recent advances in the use of MOFs in agriculture through three main views: environmental remediation, controlled agrochemical release, and detection of agrochemicals.

Abstract
The design and construction of a sensor that can sensitively and conveniently recognize metal ions are essential for the treatment of industrial wastewater. In this work, {[Cd4(HL)2(pyp)2(H2O)2]·2H2O·1.5Diox}n (1) was synthesized under solvothermal condition and presented a 2D 3,5-connected layered network with the point symbol of {3.4.5} {32.4.5.62.74}, which was coated on the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to construct a novel paper sensor (1@PVDF). Meanwhile, the stability of 1@PVDF was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, fluorescence sensing experiments of 1@PVDF sensor for cations in aqueous system indicated that it has high sensitivity for sensing Fe3+ ions with the detection limit (DL) of 4.0 × 10-8 M. By the characterization of PXRD, UV-vis spectra, ICP, XPS, time-resolved excited-state decay measurements, the sensing mechanisms of 1@PVDF for Fe3+ ions were attributed to the competitive absorption and interaction between 1 and Fe3+. And the sensing process of 1@PVDF for Fe3+ ions was static in the Fe3+ concentration of 0 to 0.05 mM. In addition, the binding energies of Fe3+ and Zn2+ with the framework of 1 were calculated by density functional theory (DFT), which further proved that there was an obvious interaction between Fe3+ and the uncoordinated O atom in 1. Based on the thin film technology, a portable and convenient paper-based probe has been developed for practical applications.

Abstract
Pesticides, as a type of toxic chemicals widely used for a long time, not only pollute the environment but also affect people's health and cause serious harm to the human body, soil and environment. Therefore, it is very necessary to exploit a portable and environmentally friendly method to detect pesticides with high sensitivity. Herein, a new luminescent metal-organic framework ([Zn(TPYBDC)·H2O]n, TPYBDC2- = 4'-(pyridin-4-yl)-[2,2':6',2''-terpyridine]-4,4''-dicarboxylate) with 2D coordination layers has been designed and assembled using 4'-(pyridin-4-yl)-[2,2':6',2''-terpyridine]-4,4''-dicarboxylic acid as the ligand. The as-synthesized Zn-LMOF was exfoliated to ultrathin 2D nanosheets (4-5 nm) to form a luminescence colloidal sensor by destroying the weak interaction between the coordination layers such as H-bonding between the matrix H2O and the coordination carboxyl oxygen, and the π-π interactions among the interlayer conjugated aromatic rings. Investigation of its recognition and detection ability towards chemical pesticides shows that it can sensitively detect pesticides such as imidacloprid, nitenpyram and dinotefuran via fluorescence quenching effect with very low detection limit (LOD). Using imidacloprid as a typical case, a LOD value of 0.562 μM and recoveries for the simulated agricultural environmental samples in the range of 94-115% suggests that the as-fabricated 2D Zn-MOF nanosheet colloidal sensor (Zn-LMOF probe) is a most promising candidate for sensing chemical pesticides.

Abstract
A novel and unusual 3D luminescent coordination polymer (CP) [Zn2(3-bpah)(bpta)(H2O)]·3H2O (1), where 3-bpah denotes N,N'-bis(3-pyridinecarboxamide)-1,2-cyclohexane and H4bpta denotes 2,2',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid, was successfully synthesized via hydrothermal methods from Zn(II) ions and 3-bpah and bpta ligands. The structure of this CP was investigated via powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis along with single crystal X-ray diffraction. Notably, 1 exhibits remarkable fluorescence behavior and stability over a wide pH range and in various pure organic solvents. More importantly, 1 can become an outstanding candidate for the selective and sensitive sensing of Fe3+, Mg2+, Cr2O72-, MnO4-, nitrobenzene (NB) and nitromethane (NM), at an extremely low detection limit. The changes in the fluorescence intensity exhibited by these six analytes in the presence of 1 over a wide pH range indicate that this polymer can be an excellent luminescent sensor. To the best of our knowledge, 1 is a rare example of a CP-based multiresponsive fluorescent sensor for metal cations, anions, and toxic organic solvents.

Abstract
Atmospheric water harvesting, triphasic detection of water contaminants, and advanced antiforgery measures are among important global agendas, where metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as an incipient class of multifaceted materials, can affect substantial development of individual properties at the interface of tailor-made fabrication. The chemically robust and microporous MOF, encompassing contrasting pore functionalization, exhibits an S-shaped water adsorption curve at 300 K with a steep pore-filling step near P/P0 = 0.5 and shows reversible uptake-release performance. Density functional theory (DFT) studies provide atomistic-level snapshots of sequential insertion of H2O molecules inside the porous channels and also portray H-bonding interactions with polar functional sites in the two-fold interpenetrated structure. The highly emissive attribute with an electron-pull system benefits the fast-responsive framework and highly regenerable detection of four classes of organic pollutants (2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), dichloran, aniline, and nicotine) in water at a record-low sensitivity. In addition to solid-, liquid-, and vapor-phase sensing, host-guest-mediated reversible fluoroswitching is validated through repetitive paper-strip monitoring and image-based detection of food sample contamination. Structure-property synergism in the electron transfer route of sensing is justified from DFT calculations that describe the reshuffling of molecular orbital energy levels in an electron-rich network by each organotoxin, besides evidencing framework-analyte supramolecular interactions. The MOF further delineates the pH-responsive luminescence defect repair via site-specific emission modulation, wherein reversibly alternated "encrypted and decrypted" states are utilized as highly reusable anticounterfeiting labels over multiple platforms and conceptualized as artificial molecular switches. Aiming at self-calibrated, advanced security claims, a NOR-OR coupled logic gate is devised based on commensurate fluorescence-cum-real-time synchronous detection of organic and inorganic (HCl and NH3) pollutants.

Abstract
Crystalline coordination networks with an infinite extended framework, also known as coordination polymers (CPs) or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have attracted significant attention owing to their tremendous performance in an extensive range of applications. The unique structural features and high stability of coordination networks are responsible for their utilization and potential in diverse fields especially in the area of sensing using luminescent CPs/MOFs. The recognition of toxic oxo-anions present in water is a crucial and first step towards environmental remediation, mainly in the case of water pollution. Accordingly, the utilization of luminescent coordination networks has received significant interest, particularly for the recognition of various toxic oxo-anions, which are considered a threat to aquatic life and the environment. In this frontier article, we summarize recent reports on luminescent CPs/MOFs, their utilization for the sensing of oxo-anions and the chemistry of the interaction of oxo-anions with CPs/MOFs, which is responsible for tuning their optical signals.

Abstract
Water-ethanol suspensions of 2D coordination network (CN) based on rare earth elements and mixed ligands were evaluated as reactive oxygen species (ROS) generators under UV light irradiation, in contact with a biomimetic substrate (tryptophan) or an O2(1Δg) quencher (1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran; 1,3-DPBF). A combination of bottom-up and top-down strategies was implemented in order to obtain nano-sized CN particles and the subsequent colloidal suspensions were also tested towards photodynamic inactivation of Candida albicans (C. albicans). SEM, TEM, FTIR, and XRD techniques were applied to characterize the solids and ICP-AES was employed to determine the metal content of the colloidal suspensions. Promising results were found indicating that the presence of Tb3+ allows an intersystem crossing suitable for singlet oxygen generation, resulting in the antifungal activity of C. albicans culture upon UV-irradiation.

Abstract
In the last two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted overwhelming attention. With readily tunable structures and functionalities, MOFs offer an unprecedentedly vast degree of design flexibility from enormous number of inorganic and organic building blocks or via postsynthetic modification to produce functional nanoporous materials. A large extent of experimental and computational studies of MOFs have been focused on gas phase applications, particularly the storage of low-carbon footprint energy carriers and the separation of CO2-containing gas mixtures. With progressive success in the synthesis of water- and solvent-resistant MOFs over the past several years, the increasingly active exploration of MOFs has been witnessed for widespread liquid phase applications such as liquid fuel purification, aromatics separation, water treatment, solvent recovery, chemical sensing, chiral separation, drug delivery, biomolecule encapsulation and separation. At this juncture, the recent experimental and computational studies are summarized herein for these multifaceted liquid phase applications to demonstrate the rapid advance in this burgeoning field. The challenges and opportunities moving from laboratory scale towards practical applications are discussed.

Abstract
A novel anionic Cd(ii)-based metal–organic framework, H2[Cd9(DDB)4(BPP)4(H2O)14]·4H2O·2DMA (1), was successfully obtained with a rigid carboxylate ligand 3,5-di(2′,4′-dicarboxylphenyl)benzoic acid (H5DDB) and a flexible pyridyl ligand 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (BPP). Complex 1 contains two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb structures and one-dimensional (1D) chain structures. The adjacent 2D structures are linked by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds to form an ABAB 3D supramolecular structure, where the 1D chain structures traverse the channels of the 2D structures. Due to the anionic framework, Ln(iii) ions (Ln = Eu and Tb) can be encapsulated in the framework of 1 by a post-synthetic modification process to obtain Ln(iii)@1, where 1.09Eu(iii)@1 (1a) and 0.658Tb(iii)@1 (1b) can be obtained by soaking complex 1 in a Eu(NO3)3·6H2O or Tb(NO3)3·6H2O aqueous solution for 48 h. The liquid-state emission spectra of Ln(iii)@1 can be tuned to be a white light emission by changing the Eu(iii)/Tb(iii) molar ratio in solution. Moreover, 1b can be used as a “turn-off” fluorescent probe for bilirubin with a low detection limit of 0.250 μM in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.4), which presents excellent sensitivity, high selectivity, and reusability. Furthermore, the devised fluorescent probe in serum also exhibits the fluorescence “turn-off” process with a low detection limit of 0.279 μM, and the recovery rate of bilirubin is 99.20–101.9%. The possible mechanisms of the fluorescence “turn-off” process can be explained by resonance energy transfer, and the weak interaction between 1b and bilirubin. A novel anionic Cd(ii)-based metal–organic framework was used toencapsulateLn(iii) ions, which exhibits tunable luminescence and selective sensing of bilirubin.![]()

Abstract
Developing novel luminescent materials for sensitive and rapid detection of heavy metal ions, organic solvents and organochlorine pesticides is vital for environmental monitoring. Herein, a new Ag(i) luminescent coordination polymer [Ag(3-dpyb)(H3odpa)]·H2O (LCP 1) (3-dpyb = N,N′-bis(3-pyridinecarboxamide)-1,4-butane, H4odpa = 4,4′-oxydiphthalic acid) was obtained by a hydrothermal reaction and characterized by single crystal, powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and luminescence spectroscopy. LCP 1 is a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular framework formed from 1D [Ag-3-dpyb-H3odpa]n chains and H-bond interactions. The luminescence sensing study of LCP 1 for recognizing organic solvents, organochlorine pesticides and heavy metal ions was performed, which demonstrated it to be a potential luminescent sensor for Hacac, NB, 2,6-DCN, Fe2+, Hg2+, and Fe3+. Fe2+, Hg2+, and Fe3+ in river water were determined using LCP 1 with satisfying recovery. 3D supramolecular LCP 1 can detect Hacac, NB, 2,6-DCN, Fe2+, Hg2+, and Fe3+ with a low detection limit and pH stability.![]()

Abstract
The large-scale use of pesticides such as organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) has led to serious environmental problems worldwide, and their high toxicity could cause serious damage to human health. It is crucial to remove and track them precisely in the environment and food resources. As novel nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted significant attention in the fields of adsorption and luminescence sensing due to their rich topology, tunable pore size and shape, high surface area, and abundant active sites. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) have sprung up as great potential chemical sensors to detect pesticides with fast response, high sensitivity, high selectivity and easy operation. Therefore, in this highlight, we focus on recent progress of MOFs in sensing and adsorbing pesticides, as well as in the possible mechanism of sensing, so as to attract more attention to pesticide detection and adsorption.
