Organophosphorus-B(C6F5)3 adducts: towards new solid-state emitting materials

Metal-Free Catalytic Formation of a Donor-Acceptor-Donor Molecule and Its Lewis Acid-Adduct Singlet Diradical with High-Efficient NIR-II Photothermal Conversion

We have synthesized a quinone-incorporated bistriarylamine donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) semiconductor 1 by B(C6F5)3 (BCF) catalyzed C-H/C-H cross coupling via radical ion pair intermediates. Coordination of Lewis acids BCF and Al(ORF)3 (RF=C(CF3)3) to the semiconductor 1 afforded diradical zwitterions 2 and 3 by integer electron transfer. Upon binding to Lewis acids, the LUMO energy of 1 is significantly lowered and the band gap of the semiconductor is significantly narrowed from 1.93 eV (1) to 1.01 eV (2) and 1.06 eV (3). 2 and 3 are rare near-infrared (NIR) diradical dyes with broad absorption both centered around 1500 nm. By introducing a photo BCF generator, 2 can be generated by light-dependent control. Furthermore, the integer electron transfer process can also be reversibly regulated via the addition of CH3CN. In addition, the temperature of 2 sharply increased and reached as high as 110 °C in 10 s upon the irradiation of near-infrared-II (NIR-II) laser (1064 nm, 0.7 W cm-2), exhibiting a fast response to laser. It displays excellent photothermal stability with a photothermal (PT) conversion efficiency of 62.26 % and high-quality PT imaging.

Versatile Palladium-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization to access new luminescent azaphosphaphenalene motifs

Using a straightforward sequence of diphosphonylation and a Pd-catalysed concerted-metalation-deprotonation (CMD), a synthetic strategy towards polyaromatic phosphorus containing heterocycles was developed. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of new azaphosphaphenalenes, using easily accessible palladium catalysts and starting materials. The key tetrahydroquinoline intermediates of the reaction were synthesised via a fast and effective procedure and could be isolated as such, or further reacted towards the target polyaromatic structures. The obtained products showed interesting luminescent properties and their emission, excitation and quantum yields were evaluated.

Synthesis, Post-Functionalization and Properties of Diphosphapentaarenes

Linearly-fused polyarenes are an important class of compounds with high relevance in materials science. While modifying the shape and size represents a common means to fine-tune their properties, the precise placement of heteroatoms is a strategy that is receiving an increasing deal of attention to overcome the intrinsic limitations of all-carbon structures. Thus, linearly-fused diphosphaarenes recently emerged as a novel family of molecules with striking optoelectronic properties and outstanding stability. However, the properties of diphosphaarenes are far from being benchmarked. Herein, we report the synthesis, phosphorus post-functionalization and properties of new diphosphapentaarene derivatives. We describe their synthetic limitations and unveil their potential for optoelectronic applications.

Two-Fold Intramolecular Phosphacyclization: From Fluorescent Diphosphapyrene Salts to Pentavalent Derivatives

The synthesis of π-extended pyrene-based luminescent compounds containing two six-membered phosphacycles has been realized through a two-step synthesis. It involves a Cu(II)-mediated double cyclization of tertiary diphosphane derivatives to afford dicationic molecules with quaternized phosphorus centers. Subsequent transformation of diphosphonium species into the corresponding P-oxide derivatives has been successfully achieved through Pd(0)-assisted cleavage of the P-Ph bonds, which opens a promising way for the functionalization of polyaromatic P-systems.

Luminescent Pyrrole‐Based Phosphaphenalene Gold Complexes: Versatile Anticancer Tools with Wide Applicability

Brain cancer, one of the most lethal diseases, urgently requires the discovery of novel theranostic agents. In this context, molecules based on six‐membered phosphorus heterocycles – phosphaphenalenes – are especially attractive; they possess unique characteristics that allow precise chemical engineering. Herein, we demonstrate that subtle structural modifications of the phosphaphenalene‐based gold(I) complexes lead to modify their electronic distribution, endow them with marked photophysical properties and enhance their efficacy against cancer. In particular, phosphaphenalene‐based gold(I) complexes containing a pyrrole ring show antiproliferative properties in 14 cell lines including glioblastomas, brain metastases, meningiomas, IDH‐mutant gliomas and head and neck cancers, reaching IC₅₀ values as low as 0.73 μM. The bioactivity of this new family of drugs in combination with their photophysical properties thus offer new research possibilities for both the fundamental investigation and treatment of brain cancer.

A Stable Primary Phosphane Oxide and Its Heavier Congeners

(Ferrocenylmethyl)phosphane (1) oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, elemental sulfur and grey selenium produced (ferrocenylmethyl)phosphane oxide 1O, sulfide 1S and selenide 1Se, respectively, as the first isolable primary phosphane chalcogenides lacking steric protection. At elevated temperatures, compound 1O disproportionated into 1 and (ferrocenylmethyl)phosphinic acid. In reactions with [(η⁶ -mes)RuCl₂ ]₂ , 1O underwent tautomerization into a phosphane complex [(η⁶ -mes)RuCl₂ {FcCH₂ PH(OH)-κP}], whereas 1S and 1Se lost their P-bound chalcogen atoms, giving rise to the phosphane complex [(η⁶ -mes)RuCl₂ (FcCH₂ PH₂ -κP)] (Fc=ferrocenyl, mes=mesitylene). No tautomerization was observed in the reaction of 1O with B(C₆ F₅ )₃ , which instead produced a Lewis pair FcCH₂ P(O)H₂ -B(C₆ F₅ )₃ . Phosphane oxide 1O added to C=O bonds of aldehydes and ketones and even to cumulenes PhNCE (E=O and S). However, both PH hydrogens were only employed in the reactions with aldehydes and cyanates.

A two-component molecular hybrid with enhanced emission characteristics and mechanoresponsive luminescence properties

A new binary charge transfer cocrystal system was successfully fabricated by virtue of donor–acceptor interaction and exhibited enhanced emission and sensitive mechanoresponsive luminescence properties.

We described herein the first example associated with B(C6F5)3-catalyzed preparation of phosphoryl amides under mechanochemical conditions.

Synthesis, Electronic Properties and OLED Devices of Chromophores Based on λ5 -Phosphinines

A new series of 2,4,6-triaryl-λ5 -phosphinines have been synthesized that contain different substituents both on the carbon backbone and the phosphorus atom of the six-membered heterocycle. Their optical and redox properties were studied in detail, supported by in-depth theoretical calculations. The modularity of the synthetic strategy allowed the establishment of structure-property relationships for this class of compounds and an OLED based on a blue phosphinine emitter could be developed for the first time.
