Enhanced yield-mobility products in hybrid halide Ruddlesden-Popper compounds with aromatic ammonium spacers

Dion-Jacobson to Alternating-Cations-Interaction Reconstruction toward Narrow Bandgap 2D Aromatic Hybrid Perovskite

The 2D aromatic Dion-Jacobson (DJ) hybrid perovskites combining advantages of high stability, enhanced light absorption, and favorable charge transport, are regarded as a kind of very promising materials for high-performance optoelectronic applications. However, due to the rigidity and large size of the aromatic ring, how to further reduce the interlayer distance to achieve better carrier transport and wider light response window still remain extremely challenging. Here, an interesting DJ-to-ACI (alternating-cations-interaction) reconstruction in 2D aromatic perovskite is first realized by inserting MA+ cations into (4-AP)PbI4 (1, 4-AP = 4-amidinopyridinium), successfully constructing an unprecedented ACI perovskite of (4-AP)(MA)2 Pb2 I8 (2, MA = methylamine). Remarkably, such a DJ-to-ACI reconstruction not only effectively reduces the interlayer spacing from 3.89 to 3.15 Å but also alleviates the structural distortion, which jointly causes a significant bandgap narrowing from 2.22 to 1.95 eV (smaller than all current 2D monolayered DJ perovskites), hence achieving a broad photodetection window over 660 nm. This work reports a novel narrow bandgap 2D ACI perovskite derived from the aromatic DJ motif, which sheds light on future regulations on the structure and properties of hybrid perovskites.

Trap or Triplet? Excited-State Interactions in 2D Perovskite Colloids with Chromophoric Cations

Movement of energy within light-harvesting assemblies is typically carried out with separately synthesized donor and acceptor species, which are then brought together to induce an interaction. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites have gained interest for their ability to accommodate and assemble chromophoric molecules within their lattice, creating hybrid organic-inorganic compositions. Using a combination of steady-state and time-resolved absorption and emission spectroscopy, we have now succeeded in establishing the competition between energy transfer and charge trapping in 2D halide perovskite colloids containing naphthalene-derived cations (i.e., NEA2PbX4, where NEA = naphthylethylamine). The presence of room-temperature triplet emission from the naphthalene moiety depends on the ratio of bromide to iodide in the lead halide sublattice (i.e., x in NEA2Pb(Br1-xIx)4), with only bromide-rich compositions showing sensitized emission. Photoluminescence lifetime measurements of the sensitized naphthalene reveal the formation of the naphthalene triplet excimer at room temperature. From transient absorption measurements, we find the rate constant of triplet energy transfer (kEnT) to be on the order of ∼109 s-1. At low temperatures (77 K) a new broad emission feature arising from trap states is observed in all samples ranging from pure bromide to pure iodide composition. These results reveal the interplay between sensitized triplet energy transfer and charge trapping in 2D lead halide perovskites, highlighting the need to carefully parse contributions from competing de-excitation pathways for optoelectronic applications.

Air- and water-stable and photocatalytically active germanium-based 2D perovskites by organic spacer engineering

There is increasing interest in the role of metal halide perovskites for heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we report a Ge-based 2D perovskite material that shows intrinsic water stability realized through organic cation engineering. Incorporating 4-phenylbenzilammonium (PhBz) we demonstrate, by means of extended experimental and computational results, that PhBz₂GeBr₄ and PhBz₂GeI₄ can achieve relevant air and water stability. The creation of composites embedding graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) allows a proof of concept for light-induced hydrogen evolution in an aqueous environment by 2D Ge-based perovskites thanks to the effective charge transfer at the heterojunction between the two semiconductors.

Charge-Carrier Transport in Quasi-2D Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite Solar Cells

In recent years, 2D Ruddlesden-Popper (2DRP) perovskite materials have been explored as emerging semiconductor materials in solar cells owing to their excellent stability and structural diversity. Although 2DRP perovskites have achieved photovoltaic efficiencies exceeding 19%, their widespread use is hindered by their inferior charge-carrier transport properties in the presence of diverse organic spacer cations, compared to that of traditional 3D perovskites. Hence, a systematic understanding of the carrier transport mechanism in 2D perovskites is critical for the development of high-performance 2D perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, the recent advances in the carrier behavior of 2DRP PSCs are summarized, and guidelines for successfully enhancing carrier transport are provided. First, the composition and crystal structure of 2DRP perovskite materials that affect carrier transport are discussed. Then, the features of 2DRP perovskite films (phase separation, grain orientation, crystallinity kinetics, etc.), which are closely related to carrier transport, are evaluated. Next, the principal direction of carrier transport guiding the selection of the transport layer is revealed. Finally, an outlook is proposed and strategies for enhancing carrier transport in high-performance PSCs are rationalized.

Structural chemistry of layered lead halide perovskites containing single octahedral layers

We present a comprehensive review of the structural chemistry of hybrid lead halides of stoichiometry APbX 4, A 2PbX4 or A A'PbX 4, where A and A' are organic ammonium cations and X = Cl, Br or I. These compounds may be considered as layered perovskites, containing isolated, infinite layers of corner-sharing PbX 4 octahedra separated by the organic species. First, over 250 crystal structures were extracted from the CCDC and classified in terms of unit-cell metrics and crystal symmetry. Symmetry mode analysis was then used to identify the nature of key structural distortions of the [PbX 4]∞ layers. Two generic types of distortion are prevalent in this family: tilting of the octahedral units and shifts of the inorganic layers relative to each other. Although the octahedral tilting modes are well known in the crystallography of purely inorganic perovskites, the additional layer-shift modes are shown to enormously enrich the structural options available in layered hybrid perovskites. Some examples and trends are discussed in more detail in order to show how the nature of the interlayer organic species can influence the overall structural architecture; although the main aim of the paper is to encourage workers in the field to make use of the systematic crystallographic methods used here to further understand and rationalize their own compounds, and perhaps to be able to design-in particular structural features in future work.

Reversible multicolor chromism in layered formamidinium metal halide perovskites

Metal halide perovskites feature crystalline-like electronic band structures and liquid-like physical properties. The crystal–liquid duality enables optoelectronic devices with unprecedented performance and a unique opportunity to chemically manipulate the structure with low energy input. In this work, we leverage the low formation energy of metal halide perovskites to demonstrate multicolor reversible chromism. We synthesized layered Ruddlesden-Popper FA_n+1Pb_nX_3n+1 (FA = formamidinium, X = I, Br; n = number of layers = 1, 2, 3 … ∞) and reversibly tune the dimensionality (n) by modulating the strength and number of H-bonds in the system. H-bonding was controlled by exposure to solvent vapor (solvatochromism) or temperature change (thermochromism), which shuttles FAX salt pairs between the FA_n+1Pb_nX_3n+1 domains and adjacent FAX “reservoir” domains. Unlike traditional chromic materials that only offer a single-color transition, FA_n+1Pb_nX_3n+1 films reversibly switch between multiple colors including yellow, orange, red, brown, and white/colorless. Each colored phase exhibits distinct optoelectronic properties characteristic of 2D superlattice materials with tunable quantum well thickness.

Structural Evolution of Layered Hybrid Lead Iodide Perovskites in Colloidal Dispersions

Controlling the structure of layered hybrid metal halide perovskites, such as the Ruddlesden-Popper (R-P) phases, is challenging because of their tendency to form mixtures of varying composition. Colloidal growth techniques, such as antisolvent precipitation, form dispersions with properties that match bulk layered R-P phases, but controlling the composition of these particles remains challenging. Here, we explore the microstructure of particles of R-P phases of methylammonium lead iodide prepared by antisolvent precipitation from ternary mixtures of alkylammonium cations, where one cation can form perovskite phases (CH₃NH₃⁺) and the other two promote layered structures as spacers (e.g., C₄H₉NH₃⁺ and C₁₂H₂₅NH₃⁺). We determine that alkylammonium spacers pack with constant methylene density in the R-P interlayer and exclude interlayer solvent in dispersed colloids, regardless of length or branching. Using this result, we illustrate how the competition between cations that act as spacers between layers, or as grain-terminating ligands, determines the colloidal microstructure of layered R-P crystallites in solution. Optical measurements reveal that quantum well dimensions can be tuned by engineering the ternary cation composition. Transmission synchrotron wide-angle X-ray scattering and small-angle neutron scattering reveal changes in the structure of colloids in solvent and after deposition into thin films. In particular, we find that spacers can alloy between R-P layers if they share common steric arrangements, but tend to segregate into polydisperse R-P phases if they do not mix. This study provides a framework to compare the microstructure of colloidal layered perovskites and suggests clear avenues to control phase and colloidal morphology.

Structure-Electronic Property Relationships of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper Tin- and Lead-based Iodide Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites are receiving considerable attention for applications in photovoltaics, largely due to their versatile composition and superior environmental stability over three-dimensional (3D) perovskites, but show much lower power conversion efficiencies. Hence, further understanding of the structure-property relationships of these 2D materials is crucial for improving their photovoltaic performance. Here, we investigate by means of first-principles calculations the structural and electronic properties of 2D lead and tin Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites with general formula (BA)₂A_n-1B_nI_3n+1, where BA is the butylammonium organic spacer, A is either methylammonium (MA) or formamidinium (FA) cations, B represents Sn or Pb atoms, and n is the number of layers (n = 1, 2, 3, and 4). We show that the band gap progressively increases as the number of layers decreases in both Sn- and Pb-based materials. Through substituting MA by FA cations, the band gap slightly opens in the Sn systems and narrows in the Pb systems. The electron and hole carriers show small effective masses, which are lower than those of the corresponding 3D perovskites, suggesting high carrier mobilities. The structural distortion associated with the orientation of the MA or FA cations in the inorganic layers is found to be the driving force for the induced Rashba spin-splitting bands in the systems with more than one layer. From band alignment diagrams, the transfer process of the charge carriers in the 2D perovskites is found to be from smaller to higher number of layers n for electrons and oppositely for holes, in excellent agreement with experimental studies. We also find that, when interfaced with 3D analogues, the 2D perovskites could function as hole transport materials.
