Water-Based Route for Dopamine and Reduced Graphene Oxide Aerogel Production

Water pollution caused by domestic waste oil and accidents with oil/organic spill needs immediate remediation, as such a pollution causes serious threats to health and the environment. Development of absorbent materials for the treatment of oil-polluted waters in a green and energy-efficient manner is highly desired. In this study, a green and simple strategy is proposed to prepare aerogels by hydrothermal reaction of graphene oxide (GO) dispersions using dopamine (DOPA) as the cross-linker. Concentrations of GO and DOPA were changed to determine their effects on absorption capacities. Aerogels produced had low densities ranging from 2.90 to 4.34 mg/cm3. Various organics, diesel oil, and sunflower oil were used to evaluate the absorption capacity of aerogels. It was observed that even with a mild thermal reduction at 150 °C, aerogels exhibited very high absorption capacities of up to 445 mg/mg. The produced aerogels showed high reusability (80%) and structural stability even after 10 absorption/desorption cycles. They possess great potential in oil/organic removal and water treatment based on their high absorption capacities and performances in separating organics/liquids from water.

A State-of-Art Review of the Metal Oxide-Based Nanomaterials Effect on Photocatalytic Degradation of Malachite Green Dyes and a Bibliometric Analysis

A wide range of hard contaminants in wastewater is generated from different industries as byproducts of the organic compound. In this review, various metal oxide-based nanomaterials are employed for the photocatalytic removal of malachite green (MG) dye from wastewater. Some cost-effective and appropriate testing conditions are used for degrading these hard dyes to get higher removal efficiency. The effects of specific parameters are considered such as how the catalyst is made, how much dye is in the solution at first, how much nanocatalyst is needed to break down the dye, the initial pH of the dye solution, the type of light source used, the year of publications, and how long the dye has to be exposed to light to be removed. This study suggests that Scopus-based core collected data employ bibliometric methods to provide an objective analysis of global MG dye from 2011 to 2022 (12 years). The Scopus database collects all the information (articles, authors, keywords, and publications). For bibliometric analysis, 658 publications are retrieved corresponding to MG dye photodegradation, and the number of publications increases annually. A bibliometric study reveals a state-of-art review of metal oxide-based nanomaterials' effects on photocatalytic degradation of MG dyes (12 years).

Advancements in heavy metals removal from effluents employing nano-adsorbents: Way towards cleaner production

Due to the development in science field which gives not only benefit but also introducesundesirable pollution to the environment. Many researchers have reported that nanoadsorbents are unmitigatedly a fruitful solution to address this world's problem. This review presents a potent view on various classes of nanoadsorbents and their application to wastewater treatment. Investigation of kinetics and adsorption isotherm for fluoride removal from aqueous solutions using mesoporous cerium-aluminum binary oxide nanomaterials

Herein, we report the synthesis of Ce–Al (1 : 1, 1 : 3, 1 : 6, and 1 : 9) binary oxide nanoparticles by a simple co-precipitation method at room temperature to be applied for defluoridation of an aqueous solution. The characterization of the synthesized nanomaterial was performed by XRD (X-ray diffraction), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) spectroscopy, TGA/DTA (thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis), BET (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller) surface analysis, and SEM (scanning electron microscopy). Ce–Al binary oxides in 1 : 6 molar concentration were found to have the highest surface area of 110.32 m² g⁻¹ with an average crystallite size of 4.7 nm, which showed excellent defluoridation capacity. The adsorptive capacity of the prepared material towards fluoride removal was investigated under a range of experimental conditions such as dosage of adsorbents, pH, and initial fluoride concentration along with adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics. The results indicated that fluoride adsorption on cerium–aluminum binary metal oxide nanoparticles occurred within one hour, with maximum adsorption occurring at pH 2.4. The experimental data obtained were studied using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin adsorption isotherm models. The nanomaterial showed an exceptionally high adsorbent capacity of 384.6 mg g⁻¹. Time-dependent kinetic studies were carried out to establish the mechanism of the adsorption process by pseudo-first-order kinetics, pseudo-second-order kinetics, and Weber–Morris intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The results indicated that adsorption processes followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. This study suggests that cerium–aluminum binary oxide nanoparticles have good potential for fluoride removal from highly contaminated aqueous solutions.

Mesoporous Ce–Al binary oxide nanomaterials prepared with a surface area of 110.32 m² g⁻¹ showed defluoridation capacity at pH 2.4, exhibited maximum adsorption capacity of 384.6 mg g⁻¹ and a removal efficiency of 91.5% at a small dose of nanoadsorbent.

Applications of Green Synthesized Nanomaterials in Water Remediation

Water is the most important component on the earth for living organisms. With industrial development, population increase and climate change, water pollution becomes a critical issue around the world. Its contamination with different types of pollutants created naturally or due to anthropogenic activities has become the most concerned global environmental issue. These contaminations destroy the quality of water and become harmful to living organisms. A number of physical, chemical and biological techniques have been used for the purification of water, but they suffer in one or the other respect. The development of nanomaterials and nanotechnology has provided a better path for the purification of water. Compared to conventional methods using activated carbon, nanomaterials offer a better and economical approach for water remediation. Different types of nanomaterials acting as nanocatalysts, nanosorbents, nanostructured catalytic membranes, bioactive nanoparticles, nanomembranes and nanoparticles provide an alternative and efficient methodology in solving water pollution problems. However, the major issue with nanomaterials synthesized in a conventional way is their toxicity. In recent days, a considerable amount of research is being carried out on the synthesis of nanomaterials using green routes. Nanomaterials synthesized by using the green method are now being used in different technologies, including water remediation. The remediation of water by using nanomaterials synthesized by the green method has been reviewed and discussed in this paper.

Preparation and characterization of nano-galvanic bimetallic Fe/Sn nanoparticles deposited on talc and its enhanced performance in Cr(VI) removal

In this study, talc-supported nano-galvanic Sn doped nZVI (Talc-nZVI/Sn) bimetallic particles were successfully synthesized and utilized for Cr(VI) remediation. Talc-nZVI/Sn nanoparticles were characterized by FESEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, zeta potential, and BET analysis. The findings verified the uniform dispersion of nZVI/Sn spherical nanoparticles on talc surface with a size of 30-200 nm, and highest specific surface area of 146.38 m2/g. The formation of numerous nano-galvanic cells between nZVI core and Sn shell enhanced the potential of bimetallic particles in Cr(VI) mitigation. Moreover, batch experiments were carried out to investigate optimum conditions for Cr(VI) elimination and total Cr(VI) removal was achieved in 20 min using Sn/Fe mass ratio of 6/1, the adsorbent dosage of 2 g/L, initial Cr(VI) concentration of 80 mg/L, at the acidic environment (pH = 5) and temperature of 303 K. Besides, co-existing of metallic cations turned out to facilitate the electron transfer from the nano-galvanic couple of NZVI/Sn, and suggested the revolution of bimetallic particles to trimetallic composites. The aging study of the nanocomposite confirmed its constant high activity during 60 days. The removal reaction was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the modified Langmuir isotherm models. Overall, due to the synergistic galvanic cell effect of nZVI/Sn nanoparticles and full coverage of active sites by Sn layer, Talc-nZVI/6Sn was utilized as a promising nanocomposite for fast and highly efficient Cr(VI) elimination.

Nanomaterials in the environment, human exposure pathway, and health effects: A review

Nanomaterials (NMs), both natural and synthetic, are produced, transformed, and exported into our environment daily. Natural NMs annual flux to the environment is around 97% of the total and is significantly higher than synthetic NMs. However, synthetic NMs are considered to have a detrimental effect on the environment. The extensive usage of synthetic NMs in different fields, including chemical, engineering, electronics, and medicine, makes them susceptible to be discharged into the atmosphere, various water sources, soil, and landfill waste. As ever-larger quantities of NMs end up in our environment and start interacting with the biota, it is crucial to understand their behavior under various environmental conditions, their exposure pathway, and their health effects on human beings. This review paper comprises a large portion of the latest research on NMs and the environment. The article describes the natural and synthetic NMs, covering both incidental and engineered NMs and their behavior in the natural environment. The review includes a brief discussion on sampling strategies and various analytical tools to study NMs in complex environmental matrices. The interaction of NMs in natural environments and their pathway to human exposure has been summarized. The potential of NMs to impact human health has been elaborated. The nanotoxicological effect of NMs based on their inherent properties concerning to human health is also reviewed. The knowledge gaps and future research needs on NMs are reported. The findings in this paper will be a resource for researchers working on NMs all over the world to understand better the challenges associated with NMs in the natural environment and their human health effects.

Lignin-derived (nano)materials for environmental pollution remediation: Current challenges and future perspectives

The supply of affordable drinking and sufficiently clean water for human consumption is one of the world's foremost environmental problems and a large number of scientific research works are addressing this issue Various hazardous/toxic environmental contaminants in water bodies, both inorganic and organic (specifically heavy metals and dyes), have become a serious global problem. Nowadays, extensive efforts have been made to search for novel, cost effective and practical biosorbents derived from biomass resources with special attention to value added, biomass-based renewable materials. Lignin and (nano)material adorned lignin derived entities can proficiently and cost effectively remove organic/inorganic contaminants from aqueous media. As low cost of preparation is crucial for their wide applications in water/wastewater treatment (particularly industrial water), future investigations must be devoted to refining and processing the economic viability of low cost, green lignin-derived (nano)materials. Production of functionalized lignin, lignin supported metal/metal oxide nanocomposites or hydrogels is one of the effective approaches in (nano)technology. This review outlines recent research progresses, trends/challenges and future prospects about lignin-derived (nano)materials and their sustainable applications in wastewater treatment/purification, specifically focusing on adsorption and/or catalytic reduction/(photo)degradation of a variety of pollutants.

Applications of Nanomaterials for Heavy Metal Removal from Water and Soil: A Review

Heavy metals are toxic and non-biodegradable environmental contaminants that seriously threaten human health. The remediation of heavy metal-contaminated water and soil is an urgent issue from both environmental and biological points of view. Recently, nanomaterials with excellent adsorption capacities, great chemical reactivity, active atomicity, and environmentally friendly performance have attracted widespread interest as potential adsorbents for heavy metal removal. This review first introduces the application of nanomaterials for removing heavy metal ions from the environment. Then, the environmental factors affecting the adsorption of nanomaterials, their toxicity, and environmental risks are discussed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of applying nanomaterials in environmental remediation are discussed, which can provide perspectives for future in-depth studies and applications.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Chalcopyrite/Silver Phosphate Composites with Enhanced Degradation of Rhodamine B under Photo-Fenton Process

A new composite by coupling chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂) with silver phosphate (Ag₃PO₄) (CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄) was proposed by using a cyclic microwave heating method. The prepared composites were characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Under optimum conditions and 2.5 W irradiation (wavelength length > 420 nm, power density = 0.38 Wcm⁻²), 96% of rhodamine B (RhB) was degraded by CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄ within a 1 min photo-Fenton reaction, better than the performance of Ag₃PO₄ (25% degradation within 10 min), CuFeS₂ (87.7% degradation within 1 min), and mechanically mixed CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄ catalyst. RhB degradation mainly depended on the amount of hydroxyl radicals generated from the Fenton reaction. The degradation mechanism of CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄ from the photo-Fenton reaction was deduced using a free radical trapping experiment, the chemical reaction of coumarin, and photocurrent and luminescence response. The incorporation of CuFeS₂ in Ag₃PO₄ enhanced the charge separation of Ag₃PO₄ and reduced Ag₃PO₄ photocorrosion as the photogenerated electrons on Ag₃PO₄ were transferred to regenerate Cu²⁺/Fe³⁺ ions produced from the Fenton reaction to Cu⁺/Fe²⁺ ions, thus simultaneously maintaining the CuFeS₂ intact. This demonstrates the synergistic effect on material stability. However, hydroxyl radicals were produced by both the photogenerated holes of Ag₃PO₄ and the Fenton reaction of CuFeS₂ as another synergistic effect in catalysis. Notably, the degradation performance and the reusability of CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄ were promoted. The practical applications of this new material were demonstrated from the effective performance of CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄ composites in degrading various dyestuffs (90–98.9% degradation within 10 min) and dyes in environmental water samples (tap water, river water, pond water, seawater, treated wastewater) through enhanced the Fenton reaction under sunlight irradiation.

Bacterial Nanocellulose/MoS2 Hybrid Aerogels as Bifunctional Adsorbent/Photocatalyst Membranes for in-Flow Water Decontamination

To address the problems associated with the use of unsupported nanomaterials, in general, and molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂), in particular, we report the preparation of self-supported hybrid aerogel membranes that combine the mechanical stability and excellent textural properties of bacterial nanocellulose (BC)-based organic macro/mesoporous scaffolds with the excellent adsorption-cum-photocatalytic properties and high contaminant removal performance of MoS₂ nanostructures. A controlled hydrothermal growth and precise tuning of the synthetic parameters allowed us to obtain BC/MoS₂-based porous, self-supported, and stable hybrid aerogels with a unique morphology resulting from a molecular precision in the coating of quantum-confined photocatalytic MoS₂ nanostructures (2-4 nm crystallite size) on BC nanofibrils. These BC/MoS₂ samples exhibit high surface area (97-137 m²·g^-1) and pore volume (0.28-0.36 cm³·g^-1) and controlled interlayer distances (0.62-1.05 nm) in the MoS₂ nanostructures. Modification of BC with nanostructured MoS₂ led to an enhanced pollutants removal efficiency of the hybrid aerogels both by adsorptive and photocatalytic mechanisms, as indicated by a detailed study using a specifically designed membrane photoreactor containing the developed photoactive/adsorptive BC/MoS₂ hybrid membranes. Most importantly, the prepared BC/MoS₂ aerogel membranes showed high performance in the photoassisted in-flow removal of both organic dye (methylene blue (MB)) molecules (96% removal within 120 min, K_obs = 0.0267 min^-1) and heavy metal ions (88% Cr(VI) removal within 120 min, K_obs = 0.0012 min^-1), separately and/or simultaneously, under UV-visible light illumination as well as excellent recyclability and photostability. Samples with interlayer expanded MoS₂ nanostructures were particularly more efficient in the removal of smaller species (CrO₄^2-) as compared to larger (MB) dye molecules. The prepared hybrid aerogel membranes show promising behavior for application in in-flow water purification, representing a significant advancement in the use of self-supported aerogel membranes for photocatalytic applications in liquid media.

Developments in the Application of Nanomaterials for Water Treatment and Their Impact on the Environment

Nanotechnology is an uppermost priority area of research in several nations presently because of its enormous capability and financial impact. One of the most promising environmental utilizations of nanotechnology has been in water treatment and remediation where various nanomaterials can purify water by means of several mechanisms inclusive of the adsorption of dyes, heavy metals, and other pollutants, inactivation and removal of pathogens, and conversion of harmful materials into less harmful compounds. To achieve this, nanomaterials have been generated in several shapes, integrated to form different composites and functionalized with active components. Additionally, the nanomaterials have been added to membranes that can assist to improve the water treatment efficiency. In this paper, we have discussed the advantages of nanomaterials in applications such as adsorbents (removal of dyes, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and organic contaminants from water), membrane materials, catalytic utilization, and microbial decontamination. We discuss the different carbon-based nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphene oxide, fullerenes, etc.), and metal and metal-oxide based nanomaterials (zinc-oxide, titanium dioxide, nano zerovalent iron, etc.) for the water treatment application. It can be noted that the nanomaterials have the ability for improving the environmental remediation system. The examination of different studies confirmed that out of the various nanomaterials, graphene and its derivatives (e.g., reduced graphene oxide, graphene oxide, graphene-based metals, and graphene-based metal oxides) with huge surface area and increased purity, outstanding environmental compatibility and selectivity, display high absorption capability as they trap electrons, avoiding their recombination. Additionally, we discussed the negative impacts of nanomaterials such as membrane damage and cell damage to the living beings in the aqueous environment. Acknowledgment of the possible benefits and inadvertent hazards of nanomaterials to the environment is important for pursuing their future advancement.

Antibacterial and photocatalytic activities of controllable (anatase/rutile) mixed phase TiO2 nanophotocatalysts synthesized via a microwave-assisted sol–gel method
