Optical Limiting Properties of DNA Biopolymer Doped with Natural Dyes

The high-power lasers have important implications for present and future light-based technologies; therefore, the protection measures against their high-intensity radiation are extremely important. Currently, a great deal of interest is directed towards the development of new nonlinear optical materials for passive optical limiters, which are used to protect the human eye and sensitive optical and optoelectronic devices from laser-induced damage. Biopolymers doped with natural dyes are emerging as a new class of optical materials with interesting photosensitive properties. In this paper, the optical limiting capability of deoxyribonucleic acid bio-polymer functionalized with Turmeric natural dye has been demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The experimental investigation of the optical limit has been done by the Intensity-scan method in the NIR spectral domain at the important telecommunication wavelength of 1550 nm, using ultrashort laser pulses (~120 fs). Several optical properties of this natural dye are presented and discussed. The values of the optical transmittance in the linear regime, the saturation intensity of the nonlinear transmittance curves, and the coefficient of the nonlinear absorption have been determined. The influence of the DNA biopolymer and natural dye concentration on the optical limiting properties of the investigated biomaterials is reported and discussed. The photostability and thermal stability of the investigated solutions have also been evaluated by monitoring the temporal decay of the normalized absorption spectra under illumination with UVA light and heating, respectively. Our results evidence the positive influence of the DNA, which embeds Turmeric natural dye, on the optical limiting functionality itself and on the photostability and thermal stability of this novel material. The performed study reveals the potential of the investigated novel biomaterial for applications in nonlinear photonics, in particular in optical limiting.

Enhanced Ultrafast Broadband Reverse Saturable Absorption in Twistacenes with Enlarged π-Conjugated Central Bridge

Optical nonlinearities of two all-carbon twistacenes, DPyA and DPyN, with the different π-conjugated central bridges were investigated. The nonlinear absorption properties of these compounds were measured using the femtosecond Z-scan with wavelengths between 650 and 900 nm. It has been found that the nonlinear absorption originated from two-photon absorption (TPA) and TPA-induced excited state absorption (ESA), wherein DPyA demonstrates higher performance than DPyN. The TPA cross section of DPyA (4300 GM) is nearly 4.3 times larger than that of DPyN at 650 nm. Moreover, the different central structures modulate the intensity of ESA at 532 nm, and DPyA exhibits an excellent ESA at 532 nm with multi-pulse excitation. Meanwhile, the result of data fitting and quantum chemistry calculation shows that the enhancement of nonlinear absorption in DPyA is due to the extended π- conjugated bridge and improved delocalization of π-electrons. These all-carbon twistacenes could yield potential applications in optical power limiting (OPL) technology.

Thermally stable gold nanorod dispersed silicone composite with plasmonic resonance in the optical communication window

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) possess a high optical nonlinear coefficient, ultrafast optical response speed and widely tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelength covering the visible and near infrared region. Therefore, they are extensively investigated for many optical applications. However, the poor thermal stability of the AuNRs seriously restricts their practical performance. In addition, for many applications, such as optical communication or laser modulation, AuNRs have to be combined with transparent solids, for example polymers, glass or crystals to make devices. Here, we report on the preparation of 0.23 mg AuNR dispersed methyl silicone resin (MSR) with longitudinal LSPR (L-LSPR) wavelength (1450 nm) in the optical communication window. We found that AuNR-silicone composites possess high thermal stability. After calcination in ambient environment at a temperature of 250 °C for 10 h, the L-LSPR peak of the sample can remain longer than 1380 nm, implying that the NR shape of the Au particles was well maintained. Using the open-aperture Z-scan technique, the nonlinear absorption coefficient of the composites was measured as -11.71 cm GW^-1, higher than many nonlinear materials. Thus, the thermally stable AuNR@SiO₂-MSR composite with high nonlinearity is promising for practical applications in the optical communication window.

All-Organic Composite Films for High Flexibility and Giant Nonlinear Optical Limiting Responses

Given the substantial π-electron delocalization observed in 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST), a high third-order nonlinear optical response can be expected that might manifest itself in various ways for potential applications. To probe the possibility and assess its potential, all-organic DAST-polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composite films were prepared by a simple solution casting method, and their nonlinear absorption performances were measured by an open-aperture Z-scan system. The results reveal that under irradiation by a 380 fs laser pulse at 520 nm or a 6 ns laser pulse at 532 nm, the DAST-PMMA composite films with a DAST concentration of 0.125 wt % exhibit similar giant optical limiting (OL) responses with OL threshold of 7.84 or 0.37 GW cm-2, both superior to those of most organic and inorganic OL materials measured under similar conditions. These all-organic composite films show high flexibility, and interestingly, their OL responses can remain stable even after exposure to air for 3 months. The superior OL behaviors of such materials in the femtosecond and nanosecond regimes are attributed to the two-photon absorption and the combination of two-photon absorption and excited-state absorption, respectively. The simple preparation, high flexibility, giant OL responses, and excellent environmental stability suggest that such novel all-organic composite films hold great potential for applications in flexible OL devices.

Synthesis and Ultrafast Broadband Optical Limiting Properties of a Two-Branched Twistacene

A novel two-branched twistacene (PyDN) has been designed and synthesized for application on ultrafast optical limiting. This twistacene exhibits excellent two photon absorption and two photon absorption-induced excited singlet state absorption, which was systematically investigated with a femtosecond Z-scan experiment, transient absorption spectrum, and two-photon excited fluorescence experiments. The admirable two photon absorption is attributed to the high degree of π electron delocalization in twistacene which is caused by introduction of two strong donors. The excited singlet state absorption cooperates with two-photon absorption to provide an excellent ultrafast optical limiting behavior with high linear transmittance, where the thresholds are 2.3-5.3 mJ/cm² in the spectral region of 532-800 nm of femtosecond laser and 133 mJ/cm² for picosecond pulse at 532 nm. These thresholds are lower than that of most of the optical limiters reported previously, which indicates PyDN is a promising candidate for ultrafast optical limiting.

Silane-Functionalized Carbon Dots and Their Polymerized Hybrids: From Optoelectronics to Biotherapy

Nanomaterials usually manifest unique properties in solutions but will be undermined in the solid state. It is necessary to incorporate them into substrates or hybrid them with other functional materials for multiple devices and applications. Though there are a variety of methods to inherit their intrinsic properties like fluorescent and mechanical performance, most nanohybrid materials would lose their transparency irreversibly when construct solid-state devices. As a hot topic of nanomaterials in recent years, scientific works found a type of carbon dots using silane coupling agents as precursors that can overcome the shortcoming. These carbon dots, called silane-functionalized carbon dots (SiCDs), are catching increasing interest due to their versatility. Silane coupling agents endow SiCDs with the ability to disperse in solvents or polymerize with matrices by blending or covalent bonds without loss of transparency and decline of performance. The distinguishing features make SiCDs an ideal high transmittance, high doping concentration nanomaterial. The synergistic effect of SiCDs and hybridized sol-gel solid structures can not only hold the optical features of CDs but also enhance their original physical and chemical performance. This highlight focuses on the connection between SiCDs and organosilanes. Plus, preparation methods, applications, and prospective of SiCDs are mentioned.

Effective and Green Removal of Trichloroacetic Acid from Disinfected Water

An innovative catalyst is reported for removing suspect carcinogen trichloroacetic acid (TCA) found in water after chlorination. SilverSil, a methyl-modified silica xerogel doped with Ag nanoparticles, shows remarkably high and stable activity as heterogeneous catalyst for the reductive dehalogenation of TCA with NaBH4 as reducing agent. Chloroacetic acid and acetic acid are the main products of the highly reproducible reductive dehalogenation. The low cost, high stability and ease of application of the SilverSil sol-gel catalyst to continuous processes open the route to the industrial uptake of SilverSil to free chlorinated waters from a probable human carcinogenic agent exerting significant genotoxic and cytotoxic effects.
