Advances in natural polysaccharides for gold recovery from e-waste: Recent developments in preparation with structural features

The increasing demand for gold because of its high market price and its wide use in the electronic industry has attracted interest in gold recovery from electronic waste (e-waste). Gold is being dumped as solid e-waste which contains gold concentrations ten times higher than gold ores. Adsorption is a widely used approach for extracting gold from e-waste due to its simplicity, low cost, high efficiency, and reusability of adsorbent material. Natural polysaccharides received increased attention due to their natural abundance, multi-functionality, biodegradability, and nontoxicity. In this review, a brief history, and advancements in this technology were evaluated with recent developments in the preparation and mechanism advancements of natural polysaccharides for efficient gold recovery. Moreover, we have discussed some bifunctional modified polysaccharides with detailed gold adsorption mechanisms. The modified adsorbent materials developed from polysaccharides coupled with inorganic/organic functional groups would demonstrate an efficient technology for the development of new bio-based materials for efficient gold recovery from e-waste. Also, future views are recommended for highlighting the direction to achieve fast and effective gold recovery from e-waste in a friendly and sustainable manner.

Development of a fluorescent probe for detecting Al3+ in cooked wheaten food based on phosphonic acid group functionalized polythiophene derivatives

As an unnecessary trace element, the content of aluminium in biological systems should be strictly controlled. Therefore, it was necessary to develop a convenient method for detection of aluminium ions. In this study, a fluorescent probe based on polythiophene derivatives was developed and used to detect Al³⁺ in Chinese traditional pasta. The fluorescence of this probe showed a significant decrease in hexamethylenetetramine-HCl buffer solution (pH 5) when Al³⁺ was present. In addition, the probe exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity to Al³⁺ over other metal ions when EDTA was used as the masking agent. Fluorescence intensity had a good linear relationship with the Al³⁺ concentration in the range 0.1-10 μM and the limit of detection for Al³⁺ was 39 nM. Furthermore, the probe was successfully applied to detect Al³⁺ in food samples and the results were consistent with ICP-AES.

Challenges and opportunities in the recovery of gold from electronic waste

Rapid global technological development has led to the rising production of electronic waste that presents both challenges and opportunities in its recycling. In this review, we highlight the value of metal resources in the printed circuit boards (PCBs) commonly found in end-of-life electronics, the differences between primary (ore) mining applications and secondary ('urban') mining, and the variety of metallurgical separations, in particular those that have the potential to selectively and sustainably recover gold from waste PCBs.

Water-soluble conjugated polymeric micelles as a carrier for studying Pt(iv) release and imaging in living cells

Here, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was fixed on the side chains of a poly(p-phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) core via an esterification reaction, thus forming hydrophilic conjugated polymeric micelles (CPMs).
