High piezo-resistive performances of anisotropic composites realized by embedding rGO-based chitosan aerogels into open cell polyurethane foams

3D Printing of Anisotropic Piezoresistive Pressure Sensors for Directional Force Perception

Anisotropic pressure sensors are gaining increasing attention for next-generation wearable electronics and intelligent infrastructure owing to their sensitivity in identifying different directional forces. 3D printing technologies have unparalleled advantages in the design of anisotropic pressure sensors with customized 3D structures for realizing tunable anisotropy. 3D printing has demonstrated few successes in utilizing piezoelectric nanocomposites for anisotropic recognition. However, 3D-printed anisotropic piezoresistive pressure sensors (PPSs) remain unexplored despite their convenience in saving the poling process. This study pioneers the development of an aqueous printable ink containing waterborne polyurethane elastomer. An anisotropic PPS featuring tailorable flexibility in macroscopic 3D structures and microscopic pore morphologies is created by adopting direct ink writing 3D printing technology. Consequently, the desired directional force perception is achieved by programming the printing schemes. Notably, the printed PPS demonstrated excellent deformability, with a relative sensitivity of 1.22 (kPa*wt. %)-1 over a substantial pressure range (2.8 to 8.1 kPa), approximately fivefold than that of a state-of-the-art carbon-based PPS. This study underscores the versatility of 3D printing in customizing highly sensitive anisotropic pressure sensors for advanced sensing applications that are difficult to achieve using conventional measures.

Highly Aligned Graphene Aerogels for Multifunctional Composites

Stemming from the unique in-plane honeycomb lattice structure and the sp2 hybridized carbon atoms bonded by exceptionally strong carbon-carbon bonds, graphene exhibits remarkable anisotropic electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. To maximize the utilization of graphene's in-plane properties, pre-constructed and aligned structures, such as oriented aerogels, films, and fibers, have been designed. The unique combination of aligned structure, high surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, mechanical stability, thermal conductivity, and porous nature of highly aligned graphene aerogels allows for tailored and enhanced performance in specific directions, enabling advancements in diverse fields. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in highly aligned graphene aerogels and their composites. It highlights the fabrication methods of aligned graphene aerogels and the optimization of alignment which can be estimated both qualitatively and quantitatively. The oriented scaffolds endow graphene aerogels and their composites with anisotropic properties, showing enhanced electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties along the alignment at the sacrifice of the perpendicular direction. This review showcases remarkable properties and applications of aligned graphene aerogels and their composites, such as their suitability for electronics, environmental applications, thermal management, and energy storage. Challenges and potential opportunities are proposed to offer new insights into prospects of this material.

Hollow glass microspheres embedded in porous network of chitosan aerogel used for thermal insulation and flame retardant materials

In recent years, biopolymer aerogels as thermal insulation materials have received widespread attention due to natural abundance, cost-efficiency, and environment-friendly. However, the flammability and low strength hinder its practical application. Hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) as an inorganic thermal insulation filler have been filled in biopolymer aerogels to improve flame retardancy. However, the structure formed by HGMs embedded porous network of biopolymer aerogel has rarely been investigated, which not only reduce thermal conductivity through high porosity, but also adjust the filling volume of HGMs and achieve uniform distribution through chemical cross-linking. Herein, a biopolymer aerogel composite was assembled by chitosan aerogel (CSA) and different volume of HGMs by chemical cross-linking, freeze-drying, and silylation modification processes. When the filling volume fraction of HGMs reached 40 %, a skeleton structure was initially formed. The composites with HGMs volume of 40 %-60 % exhibited low density, high porosity, low thermal conductivity, good mechanical property, and excellent flame retardancy. According to GB 8624-2012 standard for classification, the composite with 60 % HGMs achieved class A1 non-combustible.

Effect of Different Methods to Synthesize Polyol-Grafted-Cellulose Nanocrystals as Inter-Active Filler in Bio-Based Polyurethane Foams

Currently, the scientific community has spent a lot of effort in developing "green" and environmentally friendly processes and products, due the contemporary problems connected to pollution and climate change. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are at the forefront of current research due to their multifunctional characteristics of biocompatibility, high mechanical properties, specific surface area, tunable surface chemistry and renewability. However, despite these many advantages, their inherent hydrophilicity poses a substantial challenge for the application of CNCs as a reinforcing filler in polymers, as it complicates their dispersion in hydrophobic polymeric matrices, such as polyurethane foams, often resulting in aggregate structures that compromise their properties. The manipulation and fine-tuning of the interfacial properties of CNCs is a crucial step to exploit their full potential in the development of new materials. In this respect, starting from an aqueous dispersion of CNCs, two different strategies were used to properly functionalize fillers: (i) freeze drying, solubilization in DMA/LiCl media and subsequent grafting with bio-based polyols; (ii) solvent exchange and subsequent grafting with bio-based polyols. The influence of the two functionalization methods on the chemical and thermal properties of CNCs was examined. In both cases, the role of the two bio-based polyols on filler functionalization was elucidated. Afterwards, the functionalized CNCs were used at 5 wt% to produce bio-based composite polyurethane foams and their effect on the morphological, thermal and mechanical properties was examined. It was found that CNCs modified through freeze drying, solubilization and bio-polyols grafting exhibited remarkably higher thermal stability (i.e., degradation stages > 100 °C) with respect to the unmodified freeze dried-CNCs. In addition, the use of the two grafting bio-polyols influenced the functionalization process, corresponding to different amount of grafted-silane-polyol and leading to different chemico-physical characteristics of the obtained CNCs. This was translated to higher thermal stability as well as improved functional and mechanical performances of the produced bio-based composite PUR foams with respect of the unmodified CNCs-composite ones (the best case attained compressive strength values three times more). Solvent exchange route slightly improved the thermal stability of the obtained CNCs; however; the so-obtained CNCs could not be properly dispersed within the polyurethane matrix, due to filler aggregation.

Effect of carbonaceous fillers on adsorption behavior of multifunctional diatomite-based foams for wastewater treatment

Nowadays the study of the potential applications of multifunctional materials for environmental remediation is one of the main goals of the materials engineering. Multifunctional porous materials, MPMs, incorporate, all in once, different and multiple functionalities that make them suitable for several uses and can satisfy many purposes at the same time. Multifunctional diatomite-based foams with a hierarchical porosity, already produced and characterized to be applied in building as well as aerospace sectors, are proposed as adsorbents for inorganic and organic pollutants removal from wastewaters. Then, the effect of the addition of different carbonaceous nanofillers (graphite, graphene and graphene oxide) on the water purification efficiency of the adsorbent was evaluated. Firstly, pristine MPM showed the best performance in adsorbing Indigo Carmine due to its intrinsic chemism and hierarchical porosity (at macro-, micro- and nano-level), but it is not the best with respect to the Cd²⁺ adsorption, if compared with the nanocomposites. Among the nanocomposite products, both graphene- and graphene oxide-MPM samples showed a significantly improved adsorption capacity towards Cd²⁺. This behavior is due to the synergistic effect of the finer morphology, higher available foam surface, and the highly exfoliated fillers, graphene and graphene oxide, which permit a better dispersion into the matrix.

Ice-assisted synthesis of functional nanomaterials: the use of quasi-liquid layers as nanoreactors and reaction accelerators

The discovery of peculiar quasi-liquid layers on ice surfaces marks a major breakthrough in ice-related sciences, as the facile tuning of the reactions and morphologies of substances in contact with these layers make ice-assisted chemistry a low-cost, environmentally benign, and ubiquitous methodology for the synthesis of nanomaterials with improved functionality. Ice-templated synthesis of porous materials offers the appealing features of rapid self-organization and remarkable property changes arising from confinement effects and affords materials that have found a diverse range of applications such as batteries, supercapacitors, and gas separation. Moreover, much attention has been drawn to the acceleration of chemical reactions and transformations on the ice surface due to the freeze concentration effect, fast self-diffusion of surface water, and modulated surface potential energy. Some of these results are related to the accumulation of inorganic contaminants in glaciers and the blockage of natural gas pipelines. As an emerging theme in nanomaterial design, the dimension-controlled synthesis of hybrid materials with unprecedentedly enhanced properties on ice surfaces has attracted much interest. However, a deep understanding of quasi-liquid layer characteristics (and hence, the development of cutting-edge analytical technologies with high surface sensitivity) is required to achieve the current goal of ice-assisted chemistry, namely the preparation of tailor-made materials with the desired properties.

Prominent adsorption of Cr(VI) with graphene oxide aerogel twined with creeper-like polymer based on chitosan oligosaccharide

Low-density aerogels with three-dimensional porous structure were synthesized using soluble chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) and graphene oxide (GO) as raw materials under mild conditions. Tetraethylenepentamine was used as the crosslinker of COS and the bridge between GO and COS, as well as the provider of functional groups. Structural characterizations revealed that crosslinked COS polymers firmly fixed on the surfaces of GO sheets and abundant amino groups homogeneously distributed in the pores. The adsorption capacity of the aerogel for Cr(VI) can reach up to 519.8 mg/g, while the adsorption efficiency for trace Cr(VI) adsorption can also reach 100% especially. The adsorption mechanism was investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and zeta potential analysis. The superb properties suggested that the strategy of using COS as a raw material for the fabrication of adsorbents with controllable structure and form is meaningful.

A review of multifunctional nacre-mimetic materials based on bidirectional freeze casting

Nacre has achieved an excellent combination of strength and toughness through its unique brick-and-mortar structure of layered aragonite platelets bonded with biopolymers. Mimicking nacre has been considered as a practical way for the development of high-performance structural composites. Over the past years, many techniques have been developed to fabricate multifunctional nacre-mimetic materials, including freeze casting, layer-by-layer assembly, vacuum filtration, 3D printing and so on. Among them, freeze casting, especially bidirectional freeze casting, as an environmentally friendly and scalable method, has attracted extensive attention recently. In this review, we begin with the introduction and discussion of various fabrication techniques comparing their advantages and disadvantages, focusing on the most recent advances of the bidirectional freeze casting technique. Then, we summarize representative examples of applying the bidirectional freeze casting technique to assemble various building blocks into multifunctional nacre-mimetic materials and their wide applications. At the end, we discuss the future direction of using bidirectional freeze casting to make nacre-mimetic materials.

Ultralight Programmable Bioinspired Aerogels with an Integrated Multifunctional Surface for Self-Cleaning, Oil Absorption, and Thermal Insulation via Coassembly

Creating a configurable and controllable surface for structure-integrated multifunctionality of ultralight aerogels is of significance but remains a huge challenge because of the critical limitations of mechanical vulnerability and structural processability. Herein, inspired by Salvinia minima, the facile and one-step coassembly approach is developed to allow the structured aerogels to spontaneously replicate Salvinia-like textures for function-adaptable surfaces morphologically. The in situ superimposed construction of bioinspired topography and intrinsic topology is for the first time performed for programmable binary architectures with multifunctionality without engendering structural vulnerability and functional disruption. By introducing the binding groups for hydrophobicity tailoring, functionalized nanocellulose (f-NC) is prepared via mechanochemistry as a structural, functional, and topographical modifier for a multitasking role. The self-generated bioinspired surface with f-NC greatly maintains the structural unity and mechanical robustness, which enable self-adaptability and self-supporting of surface configurations. With fine-tuning of nucleation-driving, the binary microstructures can be controllably diversified for structure-adaptable multifunctionalities. The resulting ultralight S. minima-inspired aerogels (e.g., 0.054 g cm^-3) presented outstanding temperature-endured elasticity (e.g., 90.7% high-temperature compress-recovery after multiple cycles), durable superhydrophobicity, anti-icing properties, oil absorbency efficiency (e.g., 60.2 g g^-1), and thermal insulating (e.g., 0.075 W mK^-1), which are superior to these reported on the overall performance. This coassembly strategy offers the opportunities for the design of ultralight materials with topography- and function-tailorable features to meet the increasing demands in many fields such as smart surfaces and self-cleaning coatings.

Tuning of polyurethane foam mechanical and thermal properties using ball-milled cellulose

Cystalline-Cc and ultra-milled Amorphous-Ca cellulose were used as reactive filler to tune the performances of composite polyurethane-cellulose-foams, PUC. The effect of Cc and Ca on chemo-physical and mechanical properties of PUC was analysed through FTIR, morphological analysis, thermal conductivity and compression measurements. FTIR results show that, both Cc and Ca react with isocyanate through the OH functional groups contributing to the formation of a tough cellulose-polyurethane network. Morphological observations show that the addition of both Cc and Ca induces a decrease of average cell-size compared to the pristine-PU, thus confirming that they act as nucleating agent. In addition, the better dispersion of the Ca in the polyol, with respect to Cc induces, a finer cell leading to a reduction of the thermal conductivity around 33 % (for the composite loaded with 20 %wt-Ca) with respect to pristine-PU. Finally, the addition of Ca highly reactive modifies the mechanical behaviour from rigid-brittle to semi-rigid.
