Percolating conductive networks in multiwall carbon nanotube-filled polymeric nanocomposites: towards scalable high-conductivity applications of disordered systems

Synergistic effect of reduced graphene oxide/carbon nanotube hybrid papers on cross-plane thermal and mechanical properties

Graphene paper has attracted great attention as a heat dissipation material due to its excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. However, the thermal conductivity of graphene paper in the normal direction is relatively poor. In this work, the cross-plane thermal conductivities (K_⊥) and mechanical properties of the reduced graphene oxide/carbon nanotube papers with different CNT loadings were studied systematically. It was found that the K_⊥ decreased from 0.0393 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹ for 0 wt% paper to 0.0250 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹ for 3 wt% paper, and then increased to 0.1199 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹ for 20 wt% paper. The papers demonstrated a maximum elastic modulus of 6.1 GPa with 10 wt% CNT loading. The CNTs acted as scaffolds to restrain the graphene sheets from corrugating and to reinforce the mechanical properties of the hybrid papers. The more CNTs that filled the gaps between graphene sheets, the greater the number of channels of the transmission of phonons and the looser the structure in the cross-plane direction. Further mechanism analysis revealed the synergistic effects of CNT loadings and graphene sheets on enhancing the thermal and mechanical performance of the papers.

Highly Flexible and Durable Thermoelectric Power Generator Using CNT/PDMS Foam by Rapid Solvent Evaporation

Using a simple, rapid solvent evaporation process, the authors produced 3D carbon nanotube (CNT)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) foams with both high thermoelectric (TE) and good mechanical performance and used them to fabricate highly flexible and durable TE generators. The numerous pores and interfaces in the CNT/PDMS foams, which have porosities exceeding 87%, afford very low thermal conductivity of 0.13 W m^-1 K^-1 . The foam has a zT value of 6.6 × 10^-3 , which is twice as high as that of pristine CNT foam. Importantly, the CNT/PDMS foam exhibits good tensile strength of 0.78 MPa, elongation greater than 20%, and excellent resilience even at compressive strain of 80%. This foam is used to fabricate a highly flexible TE foam generator that exhibits a moderate output power of 1.9 µW generated from the large temperature gradient of 18.1 K produced by applied heat. The authors also demonstrate a practical TE foam generator that produces sustainable output power of 3.1 µW under a compressive strain of 80% and 38.2 nW under the continuous vibrational stress produced by a car engine. The TE foam generator also exhibits excellent stability and durability under cyclic bending and harsh vibrational stress.

Dielectric Spectroscopy of PP/MWCNT Nanocomposites: Relationship with Crystalline Structure and Injection Molding Condition

In this paper, we study the correlation between the dielectric behavior of polypropylene/multi-walled carbon nanotube (PP/MWCNT) nanocomposites and the morphology with regard to the crystalline structure, nanofiller dispersion and injection molding conditions. As a result, in the range of the percolation threshold the dielectric behavior shifts to a more frequency-independent behavior, as the mold temperature increases. Moreover, the position further from the gate appears as the most conductive. This effect has been associated to a modification of the morphology of the MWCNT clusters induced by both the flow of the molten polymer during the processing phase and the variation of the crystalline structure, which is increasingly constituted by γ-phase as the mold temperature increases. The obtained results allow one to understand the effect of tuning the processing condition in the frequency-dependent electrical behavior of PP/MWCNT injection-molded nanocomposites, which can be successfully exploited for an advanced process/product design.

Decreasing Resistivity of Silicon Carbide Ceramics by Incorporation of Graphene

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic is an ideal material for mechanical seal because of its super hardness, high strength, low friction coefficient, good thermal conductivity, and resistance to friction and wear. However, due to relatively high resistivity of SiC ceramic, the triboelectric charge caused by rubbing of mechanical seal end-faces could not be released. It is terrible that the accumulation of triboelectric charge could cause electrochemical corrosion, which would accelerate wear. To decrease the resistivity of SiC ceramic is a desire for improving the performance of mechanical seal. In this research, decreasing resistivity of pressureless sintered SiC ceramic was investigated by conductive pathways through semiconductive grains in a body by incorporation of graphene, which has an extremely low resistivity. With the increasing of graphene from 0 to 2 wt.%, the volume resistivity of SiC ceramics sintered with graphene decreased logarithmically from >10⁶ to around 200 Ω·cm, and the bulk density decreased gradually, from 3.132 to 3.039 g/cm³. In order to meet the requirements of mechanical seal, SiC ceramic sintered with 1 wt.% of graphene, for which the volume resistivity is of 397 Ω·cm, the bulk density is of 3.076 g/cm³, and the flexural strength is of 364 MPa, was optimized when all properties were taken into consideration. It is possible to fabricate low-resistivity SiC ceramic as a useful friction pair material for mechanical seal in a special condition, without excessive loss of their excellent mechanical properties by the introduction of partially connected graphene as conductive pathway into semiconducting ceramic.
