Switching plasmonic Fano resonance in gold nanosphere-nanoplate heterodimers

Active Control of Energy Transfer in Plasmonic Nanorod-Polyaniline Hybrids

The hybridization of plasmonic energy and charge donors with polymeric acceptors is a possible means to overcome fast internal relaxation that limits potential photocatalytic applications for plasmonic nanomaterials. Polyaniline (PANI) readily hybridizes onto gold nanorods (AuNRs) and has been used for the sensitive monitoring of local refractive index changes. Here, we use single-particle spectroscopy to quantify a previously unreported plasmon damping mechanism in AuNR-PANI hybrids while actively tuning the PANI chemical structure. By eliminating contributions from heterogeneous line width broadening and refractive index changes, we identify efficient resonance energy transfer (RET) between AuNRs and PANI. We find that RET dominates the optical response in our AuNR-PANI hybrids during the dynamic tuning of the spectral overlap of the AuNR donor and PANI acceptor. Harnessing RET between plasmonic nanomaterials and an affordable and processable polymer such as PANI offers an alternate mechanism toward efficient photocatalysis with plasmonic nanoparticle antennas.

Exciton-induced Fano resonance in metallic nanocavity with tungsten disulfide atomic layer

Photon-exciton coupling behaviors in optical nanocavities attract broad attention due to their crucial applications in light manipulation and emission. Herein, we experimentally observed a Fano-like resonance with asymmetrical spectral response in an ultrathin metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) cavity integrated with an atomic-layer tungsten disulfide (WS₂). The resonance wavelength of an MDM nanocavity can be flexibly controlled by adjusting dielectric layer thickness. The results measured by the home-made microscopic spectrometer agree well with the numerical simulations. A temporal coupled-mode theoretical model was established to analyze the formation mechanism of Fano resonance in the ultrathin cavity. The theoretical analysis reveals that the Fano resonance is attributed to a weak coupling between the resonance photons in the nanocavity and excitons in the WS₂ atomic layer. The results will pave a new way for exciton-induced generation of Fano resonance and light spectral manipulation at the nanoscale.

Controlled Assembly of Plasmonic Nanoparticles: From Static to Dynamic Nanostructures

The spatial arrangement of plasmonic nanoparticles can dramatically affect their interaction with electromagnetic waves, which offers an effective approach to systematically control their optical properties and manifest new phenomena. To this end, significant efforts were made to develop methodologies by which the assembly structure of metal nanoparticles can be controlled with high precision. Herein, recent advances in bottom-up chemical strategies toward the well-controlled assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles, including multicomponent and multifunctional systems are reviewed. Further, it is discussed how the progress in this area has paved the way toward the construction of smart dynamic nanostructures capable of on-demand, reversible structural changes that alter their properties in a predictable and reproducible manner. Finally, this review provides insight into the challenges, future directions, and perspectives in the field of controlled plasmonic assemblies.

Completely green synthesis of rose-shaped Au nanostructures and their catalytic applications

A novel protocol for the one-pot, template/seed-free, and completely green synthesis of rose-shaped Au nanostructures with unique three-dimensional hierarchical structures was developed.

Electrochemical coating of different conductive polymers on diverse plasmonic metal nanocrystals

Conductive polymers are attracting much attention for realizing active plasmonics on conventional static plasmonic nanostructures because of their variable dielectric functions. Combining organic conductive polymers with inorganic plasmonic nanostructures allows for the creation of active devices, such as active metasurfaces, reconfigurable metalenses and dynamic plasmonic holography. However, the complexity of such a combination, together with the poor control in polymer thickness and morphology, has limited the advancement of active plasmonics. Herein we report on the electrochemical coating of conductive polymers on pre-grown metal nanocrystals. Robust control of the polymer thickness and morphology is accomplished through the variation of the applied electrochemical potential. Various types of conductive polymers are coated on different metal nanocrystals, including Au, Pd and Pt. Active plasmonic color switching and H2O2 sensing are demonstrated with polyaniline-coated Au nanorods.

Constructing a library of metal and metal-oxide nanoparticle heterodimers through colloidal assembly

Nanoparticle dimers composed of different metals or metal oxides, as well as different shapes and sizes, are of wide interest for applications ranging from nanoplasmonic sensing to nanooptics to biomedical engineering. Shaped nanoparticles, like triangles and nanorods, can be particularly useful in applications due to the strong localized plasmonic hot-spot that forms at the tips or corners. By placing catalytic, but traditionally weakly- or non-plasmonic nanoparticles, such as metal oxides and metals like palladium, in these hot-spots, an enhanced function for sensing, photocatalysis or optical use is predicted. Here, we present an electrostatic colloidal assembly strategy for nanoparticles, incorporating different sizes, shapes and metal or metal oxide compositions into heterodimers with smaller gaps than are achievable using nanofabrication techniques. This versatile method is demonstrated on 14 combinations, including a variety of shaped gold nanoparticles as well as palladium, iron oxide, and titanium oxide nanoparticles. These colloidal nanoparticles are stabilized with traditional surfactants, such as citrate, CTAB, PVP and oleic acid/oleylamines, indicating the wide applicability of our approach. Heterodimers of gold and palladium are further analyzed using cathodoluminescence to demonstrate the tunability of these "plasmonic molecules". Since systematically altering the absorption and emission of the plasmonic nanoparticles dimers is crucial to extending their functionality, and small gap sizes produce the strongest hot-spots, this method indicates that the electrostatic approach to heterodimer assembly can be useful in creating new nanoparticle dimers for many applications.

Double Fano resonances in hybrid disk/rod artificial plasmonic molecules based on dipole-quadrupole coupling

Fano resonance can be achieved by the destructive interference between a superradiant bright mode and a subradiant dark mode. A variety of artificial plasmonic oligomers have been fabricated to generate Fano resonance for its extensive applications. However, the Fano resonance in plasmonic oligomer systems comes from the interaction of all metal particles, which greatly limits the tunability of the Fano resonance. Besides, only a single Fano resonance is supported by many existing plasmonic oligomers, while multiple Fano resonances mostly occur in complex and multilayer structures, whose fabrication is greatly challenging. Here, a simple asymmetric plasmonic molecule consisting of a central metal disk and two side-coupled parallel metal rods is demonstrated. The simulation and experimental results clearly show that double Fano resonances appear in the transmission spectrum. In addition, the two Fano peaks can be independently tuned and single/double Fano peak switching can be achieved by changing one rod length or the gap distances between the rods and the disk. The modulation method is simple and effective, which greatly increases the tunability of the structure. The proposed asymmetric artificial plasmonic molecule can have applications in multi-channel optical switches, filters and biosensors. Moreover, the controllable plasmonic field intensity in the gap between the disk and rods also provides a new control means for plasmon-induced photocatalytic reactions and biosynthesis.

Electrochemical Switching of Plasmonic Colors Based on Polyaniline-Coated Plasmonic Nanocrystals

Plasmonic color generation has attracted much research interest because of the unique optical properties of plasmonic nanocrystals that are promising for chromatic applications, such as flat-panel displays, smart windows, and wearable devices. Low-cost, monodisperse plasmonic nanocrystals supporting strong localized surface plasmon resonances are favorable for the generation of plasmonic colors. However, many implementations so far have either a single static state or complexities in the particle alignment and switching mechanism for generating multiple displaying states. Herein, we report on a facile and robust approach for realizing the electrochemical switching of plasmonic colors out of colloidal plasmonic nanocrystals. The metal nanocrystals are coated with a layer of polyaniline, whose refractive index and optical absorption are reversibly switched through the variation of an applied electrochemical potential. The change in refractive index and optical absorption results in the modulation of the plasmonic scattering intensity with a depth of 11 dB. The electrochemical switching process is fast (∼5 ms) and stable (over 1000 switching cycles). A device configuration is further demonstrated for switching plasmonic color patterns in a transparent electrochemical device, which is made from indium tin oxide electrodes and a polyvinyl alcohol solid electrolyte. Our control of plasmonic colors provides a favorable platform for engineering low-cost and high-performance miniaturized optical devices.

Strengthening Fano resonance on gold nanoplates with gold nanospheres

Plasmonic Fano resonance has attracted extensive attention due to its many applications, including plasmonic sensing, electromagnetically induced transparency, light trapping and stopping, due to its narrow linewidth and asymmetric spectral shape. However, many metal nanostructures are designed with complex geometries to generate Fano resonance and few of them can support a deep Fano dip. Herein we report on the strengthening of the Fano resonance on silicon-supported Au nanoplates through the formation of (Au nanosphere)-(Au nanoplate) heterodimers. The deposition of the Au nanosphere on the top can greatly strengthen the substrate-induced Fano resonance of the Au nanoplate with a deep dip. We also observe that the replacement of the Au nanosphere with a Au nanocube can suppress the excitation of the Fano resonance in the heterodimer. When the sharp corners and edges of the nanocubes gradually become rounded, the Fano resonance appears again with increasing asymmetry. Both the dip depth and wavelength of the Fano resonance can be independently tailored by varying the nanosphere diameter and the nanoplate thickness, respectively. We believe that our results provide an attractive and facile platform for modulating Fano dips and constructing Fano resonance-based devices.

Ultrafast optical switching based on mutually enhanced resonance modes in gold nanowire gratings

We report an efficient ultrafast optical switching device consisting of periodically arranged gold nanowires, which were produced by the multistage deposition of colloidal gold nanoparticles into deep grooves, so that they are as high as 220 nm and continuous as long as 20 mm. Due to the large thickness of the gold nanowires, two resonance modes became efficient and mutually enhanced: the waveguide resonance mode and the Bragg microcavity resonance mode. These resonance modes are based on the same diffraction conditions and have a completely overlapped spectroscopic response. Thus, a sharp resonance mode with a large amplitude and a steep rising edge is observed in the optical extinction spectrum at normal incidence. Strong optical excitation induced a red shift of the resonance spectrum and resulted in an enhanced optical transmission spectrum with a narrow bandwidth and a high response speed. Such an optical switching device with new physics has potential applications in optical logic circuits and integrated optics.
