Synergistic Performance Boosts of Dopamine-Derived Carbon Shell Over Bi-metallic Sulfide: A Promising Advancement for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

A CoMoS composite is synthesized to combine the benefits of cobalt and molybdenum sulfides as an anodic material for advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The synthesis is accomplished using a simple two-step hydrothermal method and the resulting CoMoS nanocomposites are subsequently encapsulated in a carbonized polydopamine shell. The synthesis procedure exploited the self-polymerization ability of dopamine to create nitrogen-doped carbon-coated cobalt molybdenum sulfide, denoted as CoMoS@NC. Notably, the de-lithiation capacity of CoMoS and CoMoS@NC is 420 and 709 mAh g⁻1, respectively, even after 100 lithiation/de-lithiation cycles at a current density of 200 mA g⁻1. Furthermore, excellent capacity retention ability is observed for CoMoS@NC as it withstood 600 consecutive lithiation/de-lithiation cycles with 94% capacity retention. Moreover, a LIB full-cell assembly incorporating the CoMoS@NC anode and an NMC-532 cathode is subjected to comprehensive electrochemical and practical tests to evaluate the performance of the anode. In addition, the density functional theory showcases the increased lithium adsorption for CoMoS@NC, supporting the experimental findings. Hence, the use of dopamine as a nitrogen-doped carbon shell enhanced the performance of the CoMoS nanocomposites in experimental and theoretical tests, positioning the material as a strong candidate for LIB anode.

One-step electrodeposited Ni3S2/Co9S8/NiS composite on Ni foam as high-performance electrode for supercapacitors

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) are considered as one of the promising electrode materials due to their fascinating redox reversibility and electronic conductivity. However, volume expansion during the charge/discharge process impedes their practical applications. The reasonable design of TMS electrode materials with unique morphology can improve the energy storage performance. Herein, we prepared the Ni₃S₂/Co₉S₈/NiS composite that is in situ grown on Ni foam (NF) via a one-step electrodeposition process. The optimized Ni₃S₂/Co₉S₈/NiS-7 shows a superhigh specific capacity of 2785.3 F g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 and remarkable rate capability. Furthermore, the as-assembled device displays a high energy density of 40.1 W h kg^-1 at a power density of 799.3 W kg^-1 and a satisfactory stability of 96.6% retention after 5000 cycles. This work provides a facile way to fabricate new TMS electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.

One-dimensional, space-confined, solid-phase growth of the Cu9S5@MoS2 core-shell heterostructure for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Binary transition metal chalcogenide core-shell nanocrystals are considered the most promising nonprecious metal catalysts for large-scale industrial hydrogen production. Herein, we report a one-dimensional, space-confined, solid-phase strategy for the growth of a Cu₉S₅@MoS₂ core-shell heterostructure by combining electrospinning and chemical vapor deposition methods. The Cu₉S₅@MoS₂ core-shell nanocrystals were synthesized in situ on carbon nanofibers (Cu₉S₅@MoS₂/CNFs) by an S vapor graphitization process. Tuning of the MoS₂ shell numbers can be controlled by changing the mass ratio of the Cu and Mo precursors. We experimentally determined the effects of the thickness of the MoS₂ shell on the electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic and alkaline solutions. When the mass ratio is 3:1, the Cu₉S₅@MoS₂/CNFs show the fewest MoS₂ shells with just 1-2 layers each and exhibit the best HER performance with small overpotentials of 116 mV and 114 mV in acidic and alkaline solutions, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2. The core shell structures, with their unique Cu-S-Mo nanointerfaces, could enhance the electron transfer and surface area, thus increasing the performance of the HER. This work provides a facile method to design unique core shell assemblies in one-dimensional nanostructures.
