Hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene using Pd-promoted Co-Mo/Al2O3 and Ni-Mo/Al2O3 catalysts coupled with ionic liquids at ambient operating conditions

Ionic Liquids in Metal, Photo-, Electro-, and (Bio) Catalysis

Ionic liquids (ILs) have unique physicochemical properties that make them advantageous for catalysis, such as low vapor pressure, non-flammability, high thermal and chemical stabilities, and the ability to enhance the activity and stability of (bio)catalysts. ILs can improve the efficiency, selectivity, and sustainability of bio(transformations) by acting as activators of enzymes, selectively dissolving substrates and products, and reducing toxicity. They can also be recycled and reused multiple times without losing their effectiveness. ILs based on imidazolium cation are preferred for structural organization aspects, with a semiorganized layer surrounding the catalyst. ILs act as a container, providing a confined space that allows modulation of electronic and geometric effects, miscibility of reactants and products, and residence time of species. ILs can stabilize ionic and radical species and control the catalytic activity of dynamic processes. Supported IL phase (SILP) derivatives and polymeric ILs (PILs) are good options for molecular engineering of greener catalytic processes. The major factors governing metal, photo-, electro-, and biocatalysts in ILs are discussed in detail based on the vast literature available over the past two and a half decades. Catalytic reactions, ranging from hydrogenation and cross-coupling to oxidations, promoted by homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts in both single and multiphase conditions, are extensively reviewed and discussed considering the knowledge accumulated until now.

Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals (K, Ca, Sr) Promoted Cu/SiO2 Catalyst for Hydrogenation of Methyl Acetate to Ethanol

The advancing effects of various alkali and alkaline earth metals (inclusive of K, Ca, and Sr) modified Cu/SiO2 catalysts, prepared with a modified precipitation-gel method, were investigated for the production of ethanol via hydrogenation of methyl acetate. Our results showed that Sr-doped catalysts exhibited the best and most consistent results during catalytic tests. A series of techniques, including X-ray diffraction technique, Raman spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption, N2O titration method, FTIR spectroscopy, and H2 temperature, programmed desorption and reduction (TPD and TPR), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, which was used to check the detailed characterization of Sr modification in the catalyst and its structural impacts on the properties of the catalyst. These results demonstrated that the addition of 5%Sr could strengthen the intrinsic stability of the catalyst by formulating the appropriate ratio of Cu+/(Cu0 + Cu+) to facilitate catalytic outcome improvement. The addition of 5%Sr-30%Cu/SiO2 under the most favorable conditions, resulting in the peak conversion of MA (95%) and ethanol selectivity (96%), indicates its magnificent catalytic stabilizing effects. Furthermore, the best performing catalyst was compared and tested under various conditions (LHSV and temperatures) and a 300 h long life run.

Preparation of Ca- and Na-Modified Activated Clay as a Promising Heterogeneous Catalyst for Biodiesel Production via Transesterification

For efficient biodiesel production, an acid-activated clay (AC) modified by calcium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide (CaNa/AC) was prepared as a catalyst. CaNa/AC and Na/AC were characterized by Hammett indicators, CO2-TPD, FT-IR, XRD, and N2 adsorption techniques. The influence of catalyst dose, reaction temperature, methanol/oil molar ratio, and reaction time on the transesterification of Jatropha oil was studied. Due to the introduction of calcium, CaNa/AC displayed a higher activity and stability, thereby achieving an oil conversion of 97% under the optimal reaction conditions and maintaining over 80% activity after five successive reuses. The reaction was accelerated as the temperature rose, and the apparent activation energy of CaNa/AC was 75.6 kJ·mol−1. The enhanced biodiesel production by CaNa/AC was ascribed to the increase in active sites and higher basic strength. This study presents a facile and practical method for producing biodiesel on large-scale operation.

Effect of Adding Chelating Ligands on the Catalytic Performance of Rh-Promoted MoS2 in the Hydrodesulfurization of Dibenzothiophene

Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) is a widely used process currently employed in petroleum refineries to eliminate organosulfur compounds in fuels. The current hydrotreating process struggles to remove organosulfur compounds with a steric hindrance due to the electronic nature of the current catalysts employed. In this work, the effects of adding chelating ligands such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), citric acid (CA) and acetic acid (AA) to rhodium (Rh) and active molybdenum (Mo) species for dibenzothiophene (DBT) HDS catalytic activity was evaluated. HDS activities followed the order of RhMo/ɣ-Al2O3 (88%) > RhMo-AA/ɣ-Al2O3 (73%) > RhMo-CA/ɣ-Al2O3 (72%) > RhMo-EDTA/ɣ-Al2O3 (68%). The observed trend was attributed to the different chelating ligands with varying electronic properties, thus influencing the metal–support interaction and the favorable reduction of the Mo species. RhMo/ɣ-Al2O3 offered the highest HDS activity due to its (i) lower metal–support interaction energy, as observed from the RhMo/ɣ-Al2O3 band gap of 3.779 eV and the slight shift toward the lower BE of Mo 3d, (ii) increased Mo-O-Mo species (NMo-O-Mo ~1.975) and (iii) better sulfidation of Rh and MoO in RhMo/ɣ-Al2O3 compared to the chelated catalysts. The obtained data provides that HDS catalytic activity was mainly driven by the structural nature of the RhMo-based catalyst, which influences the formation of more active sites that can enhance the HDS activity.

Facile fabrication of metakaolin/slag-based zeolite microspheres (M/SZMs) geopolymer for the efficient remediation of Cs+ and Sr2+ from aqueous media

Herein we report the fabrication of metakaolin/slag-based geopolymer microspheres by dispersion-suspension-solidification technology, and were then transformed into zeolite microspheres by in-situ thermal curing. The rheological properties and mechanical strength of metakaolin/slag-based zeolite microspheres (M/SZMs) were improved by adding slag. The zeolite microspheres were texturally and morphologically characterized by BET, SEM-EDX and XRD techniques. At 20% slag contents of the total mass of M/SZMs, the specific surface area was significantly increased without changing the structure of the zeolite. Rheological properties analysis of slurry revealed pseudoplastic fluid phase and fitted well to Herschel-Bulkley model. The adsorptive removal data of M/SZMs for Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ from wastewater followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The maximum adsorption capacity of M/SZMs for Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ was 103.74 mg/g and 54.90 mg/g and were best explained by Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively. M/SZMs exhibited excellent dynamic separation effect in column-based experimental set up. In addition, M/SZMs also realized outstanding adsorptive removal performance for Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ from different real wastewater samples. Owing to the simplistic fabrication approach, low cost and highly efficacious nature, M/SZMs can be ranked as alternative candidates for the abatement of Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ from wastewater.

Assessing the Aflatoxins Mitigation Efficacy of Blueberry Pomace Biosorbent in Buffer, Gastrointestinal Fluids and Model Wine

Blueberry (BB) and cherry pomace were investigated as new biosorbents for aflatoxins (AFs) sequestration from buffered solutions, gastrointestinal fluids and model wine. Among the tested biosorbents, BB exhibited the maximum adsorption performance for AFs and hence was further selected for the optimization of experimental parameters like pH, dosage, time and initial concentration of AFs. Material characterizations via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption isothermal studies, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) techniques revealed useful information about the texture and chemical composition of the biosorbents. The fitting of isothermal data with different models showed the model suitability trend as: Sips model > Langmuir model > Freundlich model, where the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Sips model was 4.6, 2.9, 2.7 and 2.4 mg/g for AFB1, AFB2, AFG1 and AFG2, respectively. Kinetics study revealed the fast AFs uptake by BB (50-90 min) while thermodynamics studies suggested the exothermic nature of the AFs adsorption from both, single as well as multi-toxin buffer systems, gastrointestinal fluids and model wine. Accrediting to the fast and efficient adsorption performance, green and facile fabrication approach and cost-effectiveness, the newly designed BB pomace can be counted as a promising contender for the sequestration of AFs and other organic pollutants.

Fabrication of mesoporous carbon supported Ni–Mo catalysts for the enhanced conversion of glucose to ethylene glycol

Catalyst composition with 3% Ni and 15% Mo exhibited the highest glucose conversion (100%) and EG yield (63.2%). Synergistic interaction between Ni and acidic sites over Mo is responsible for the selective activity of 3% Ni-15% Mo/MC catalyst.

Fabrication of various morphological forms of a g-C3N4-supported MoO3 catalyst for the oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene
