Two-dimensional additive diethylammonium iodide promoting crystal growth for efficient and stable perovskite solar cells

In situ surface regulation of 3D perovskite using diethylammonium iodide for highly efficient perovskite solar cells

Surface passivation by constructing a 2D/3D structure is considered to be an effective strategy for suppressing non-radiative recombination and improving the device efficiency and stability. Herein, the 2D perovskite is formed in situ on the surface of a 3D perovskite via chemical interactions between diethylammonium iodide (DAI) and Pb-I octahedra, which greatly reduces the deep level defects and non-radiative recombination. Moreover, the 2D/3D structure can regulate the energy level alignment, enhance the charge extraction, and improve the open-circuit voltage. Finally, compared with the control device, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the DAI-treated device increases from 21.58 to 23.50%. The unencapsulated devices stored in air for more than 500 hours can still retain 97% of their initial PCE, revealing good long-term placement stability. This work provides a promising strategy to fabricate efficient PSCs through the in situ construction of 2D/3D perovskite heterojunctions.

A review on two-dimensional (2D) perovskite material-based solar cells to enhance the power conversion efficiency

With perovskite materials, rapid progress in power conversion efficiency (PCE) to reach 25% has gained a significant amount of attention from the solar cell industry. Since the development of solid-state perovskite solar cells, rapid research development and investigation on structure design, device fabrication and fundamental studies have contributed to solid-state perovskite solar cells to be a strong candidate for next-generation solar energy. The promising efficiency with low-cost materials is the key point over the other material-based solar cells. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of two-dimensional (2D) perovskite materials is yet to be enhanced in order to contest with the 3D perovskite-based solar cells. Their enormous variety compromises better prospects and possibilities for research. Two-dimensional (2D) perovskites play a multi-functional role within a solar cell, such as a capping layer, passivating layer, prime cell absorber, and in a hybrid 3D/2D perovskite-based solar cell absorber. This review summarizes the evolution of solar cells that are based on 2D perovskites and their prominent character in solar cells, along with the significant trends. The fundamental configuration and the optoelectronic characteristics, including the band orientation and the transportation of the charges, are discussed in detail. The 2D perovskites are analyzed to study the confined charges within the inorganic structure due to the dielectric and quantum confinement influence. Furthermore, the importance of cesium cation (Cs⁺) doped with 2D substance (BA)₂(MA₃) PbI₃ approach has been discussed to attain high power conversion efficiency (PCE). These attributes offer an efficient step towards air-stable and small-sized perovskites as a new group of renewable energy sources.

Perovskite photodetectors and their application in artificial photonic synapses

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites exhibit superior optoelectrical properties and have been widely used in photodetectors. Perovskite photodetectors with excellent detectivity have great potential for developing artificial photonic synapses which can merge data transmission and storage. They are highly desired for next generation neuromorphic computing. The recent progress of perovskite photodetectors and their application in artificial photonic synapses are summarized in this review. Firstly, the key performance parameters of photodetectors are briefly introduced. Secondly, the recent research progress of photodetectors including photoconductors, photodiodes, and phototransistors is summarized. Finally, the applications of perovskite photodetectors in artificial photonic synapses in recent years are highlighted. All these demonstrate the great potential of perovskite photonic synapses for the development of artificial intelligence.

A Review of Integrated Systems Based on Perovskite Solar Cells and Energy Storage Units: Fundamental, Progresses, Challenges, and Perspectives

With the remarkable progress of photovoltaic technology, next-generation perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have drawn significant attention from both industry and academic community due to sustainable energy production. The single-junction-cell power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs to date has reached up to 25.2%, which is competitive to that of commercial silicon-based solar cells. Currently, solar cells are considered as the individual devices for energy conversion, while a series connection with an energy storage device would largely undermine the energy utilization efficiency and peak power output of the entire system. For substantially addressing such critical issue, advanced technology based on photovoltaic energy conversion-storage integration appears as a promising strategy to achieve the goal. However, there are still great challenges in integrating and engineering between energy harvesting and storage devices. In this review, the state-of-the-art of representative integrated energy conversion-storage systems is initially summarized. The key parameters including configuration design and integration strategies are subsequently analyzed. According to recent progress, the efforts toward addressing the current challenges and critical issues are highlighted, with expectation of achieving practical integrated energy conversion-storage systems in the future.

An artificial sensory neuron with visual-haptic fusion

Human behaviors are extremely sophisticated, relying on the adaptive, plastic and event-driven network of sensory neurons. Such neuronal system analyzes multiple sensory cues efficiently to establish accurate depiction of the environment. Here, we develop a bimodal artificial sensory neuron to implement the sensory fusion processes. Such a bimodal artificial sensory neuron collects optic and pressure information from the photodetector and pressure sensors respectively, transmits the bimodal information through an ionic cable, and integrates them into post-synaptic currents by a synaptic transistor. The sensory neuron can be excited in multiple levels by synchronizing the two sensory cues, which enables the manipulating of skeletal myotubes and a robotic hand. Furthermore, enhanced recognition capability achieved on fused visual/haptic cues is confirmed by simulation of a multi-transparency pattern recognition task. Our biomimetic design has the potential to advance technologies in cyborg and neuromorphic systems by endowing them with supramodal perceptual capabilities.

Grain Growth of MAPbI3 via Diethylammonium Bromide Induced Grain Mergence

Various additives are used to improve the film morphology, crystal quality, and grain size for the sake of enhancing the performance of three-dimensional perovskite solar cells. Although significant enhancement in the performance of devices has been made due to the introduction of additives, an in-depth understanding of the additive-related crystallization kinetics and the growth mechanism is still lacking. Here, the grain growth mechanism of diethylammonium bromide (DABr)-doped MAPbI₃ is investigated using in situ dynamic microscopy techniques. The results reveal that the alkyl chains of DABr restrain the growth of grains of MAPbI₃ during spin-coating, and DABr-induced grain mergence during the annealing process, achieving large grains on the micrometer scale. Meanwhile, the crystallization of MAPbI₃ with DABr is significantly improved and the number of defects is reduced. The solar cell with optimized DABr doping MAPbI₃ as the active layer presents a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.58% with a fill factor of 79.81%.
