A walk around the application of nanocatalysts for cross-dehydrogenative coupling of C–H bonds

Heterogeneous Photocatalysis as a Potent Tool for Organic Synthesis: Cross-Dehydrogenative C-C Coupling of N-Heterocycles with Ethers Employing TiO2/N-Hydroxyphthalimide System under Visible Light

Despite the obvious advantages of heterogeneous photocatalysts (availability, stability, recyclability, the ease of separation from products and safety) their application in organic synthesis faces serious challenges: generally low efficiency and selectivity compared to homogeneous photocatalytic systems. The development of strategies for improving the catalytic properties of semiconductor materials is the key to their introduction into organic synthesis. In the present work, a hybrid photocatalytic system involving both heterogeneous catalyst (TiO₂) and homogeneous organocatalyst (N-hydroxyphthalimide, NHPI) was proposed for the cross-dehydrogenative C-C coupling of electron-deficient N-heterocycles with ethers employing t-BuOOH as the terminal oxidant. It should be noted that each of the catalysts is completely ineffective when used separately under visible light in this transformation. The occurrence of visible light absorption upon the interaction of NHPI with the TiO₂ surface and the generation of reactive phthalimide-N-oxyl (PINO) radicals upon irradiation with visible light are considered to be the main factors determining the high catalytic efficiency. The proposed method is suitable for the coupling of π-deficient pyridine, quinoline, pyrazine, and quinoxaline heteroarenes with various non-activated ethers.

Recent developments in green approaches for sustainable synthesis of indole-derived scaffolds

An important issue to discover biological structures is the design of sustainable, safe, clean, cost-effective, excellent efficient synthetic reactions, and minimal energy consumption to provide structural diversity compounds with interesting biological properties. Among five-membered nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds, indole-containing scaffolds are heterocyclic structures found in abundance in natural products and various synthetic compounds, which have received remarkable attention in recent years due to their therapeutic and pharmaceutical properties and valuable role in the process of drug discovery. Indoles can be synthesized by various procedures although most of these procedures have their own restrictions and drawbacks such as performing the reaction in a toxic solvent, need of transition-metal catalysts, and amount of waste solvents. Due to the medicinal importance of indole and the need for green methods of drug synthesis, this review highlights the latest green synthetic methods leading to the formation of indole-containing compounds focusing on the past 4 years with typical examples. This review is divided into two sections: green solvents and green techniques that lead to the synthesis of indole-derived scaffolds.

Employing of Fe3O4/CuO/ZnO@MWCNT MNCs in the solvent-free synthesis of new cyanopyrroloazepine derivatives and investigation of biological activity

In this research, we synthesized the Fe₃O₄/CuO/ZnO@MWCNT magnetic nanocomposites using water extract of Petasites hybridus rhizome, and the high performance of synthesized catalyst was confirmed by using in the solvent-free multicomponent reactions of isatoic anhydride, N-methylimidazole, alkyl bromides, activated acetylenic compounds and 2-aminoacetonitrile at ambient temperature for the production of new cyanopyrroloazepine derivatives in high yields. This catalyst could be used several times in these reactions and have main role in the yield of product. The synthesized cyanopyrroloazepines have NH groups in their structure and for this reason have good antioxidant activity. Also, employing Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in the disk diffusion procedure confirmed some cyanopyrroloazepines antimicrobial effect. The results showed that synthesized cyanopyrroloazepine prevented the bacterial growth. This used process for preparation of new cyanopyrroloazepine has some improvements such as low reaction time, product with high yields, simple separation of catalyst and products.

PANI-Fe3O4@ZnO nanocomposite as magnetically recoverable organometallic nanocatalyst promoted synthesis of new Azo chromene dyes and evaluation of their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities

A new series of azo chromene dyes were synthesized via a facile cyclocondensation reaction of (E)-1,2-diphenyl-1-diazene and 4-aminocoumarin with 1:2 molar ratio catalyzed by the polyaniline-Fe₃O₄@ZnO nanocomposite (PANI-Fe₃O₄@ZnO). The salient features of this protocol lie in simple experimental procedure, moderate reaction conditions, and uses PANI-Fe₃O₄@ZnO nanocomposite as a magnetically separable heterogeneous catalyst. Two well-known methods were employed for assessing the antioxidant abilities of the target compounds, including free radical trapping of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), as well as ferric reducing antioxidant power assay. Also, several synthesized compounds were screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activities by employing the disk diffusion test on Gram-negative as well as Gram-positive bacteria.

In Situ Preparation of Composite Redox-Active Micelles Bearing Pd Nanoparticles for the Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol

Owing to the redox activity of the poly(ferrocenylsilane)-based polymer, several noble metal nanoparticles can be successfully prepared. As reported herein, the in situ preparation of Pd nanoparticles was performed using a redox-active platform of poly(ferrocenylmethylethylthiocarboxylpropylsilane) (PFC) micelles. PFC/Pd nanocomposites (NCs) with Pd nanoparticles uniformly dispersed at the surface of PFC nanospheres were obtained. The morphology of PFC/Pd NCs was further confirmed via high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Taking advantage of Pd nanoparticles, the PFC/Pd NCs showed significant catalytic activity during the reduction process of 4-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride. Although PFC micelles themselves showed no catalytic activity, they promoted the catalytic behavior of Pd nanoparticles obviously by anchoring the Pd nanoparticles at their surface to avoid the aggregation and leaching of Pd nanoparticles. In all, PFC/Pd NCs exhibited great potential as a composite nanocatalyst. Moreover, the PFC micelle was found to be a desired platform for nanocatalysts.

Progress and recent trends in the direct selenocyanation of (hetero)aromatic C-H bonds

This review covers recent advances in the direct selenocyanation of (hetero)aromatic C-H bonds with an emphasis on the reaction mechanisms. This novel approach is an effective means of preparing a variety of aromatic and heteroaromatic selenocyanates, which are extremely versatile synthetic precursors of selenium-containing compounds, such as selenols, seleninic acids, selenides, diselenides, and trifluoromethyl selenides.

Vicinal halo-trifluoromethylation of alkenes

Both trifluoromethyl and halide groups are widely found in medicinally and pharmaceutically important compounds and, moreover, organohalides are commonly used as versatile intermediates in synthetic organic chemistry. Due to their prevalence and easy accessibility, alkene halo-trifluoromethylation provides a convenient way to install these valuable functionalities in complex targets. In this review, we summarize recent advances and achievements in this fast-growing research field. For clarity, the reactions were classified according to the type of halogen atom.

Intermolecular difunctionalization of alkenes: synthesis of β-hydroxy sulfides

Direct difunctionalization of carbon-carbon double bonds is one of the most powerful tools available for concomitant introduction of two functional groups into olefinic substrates. In this context, vicinal hydroxysulfenylation of unactivated alkenes has emerged as a novel and straightforward strategy for the fabrication of β-hydroxy sulfides, which are extremely valuable starting materials in constructing various natural products, pharmaceuticals, and fine chemicals. The aim of this review is to summarize the most representative and important reports on the preparation of β-hydroxy sulfides through intermolecular hydroxysulfenylation of the corresponding alkenes with special emphasis on the mechanistic features of the reactions.

Electro-Oxidative Coupling Reactions Leading to π-Conjugated Compounds

Electrochemical reactions are rapidly gaining attention today as a powerful and environmentally benign reaction processes for organic synthesis. We found that the electro-oxidation of palladium acetate afforded cationic palladium species and thus-generated cationic Pd species were efficient mediators for electro-oxidative coupling reactions. Homo-coupling of arylboronic acids and terminal alkynes proceeded efficiently to afford biaryls and butadiyne, respectively. Cross-coupling reactions between terminal alkynes and arylboronic acids were also achieved with the use of a Ag anode. As an advantage of electrochemical reactions, we developed a sequential reaction system switched between oxidative and neutral conditions by the on/off application of electricity, and several π-extended butadiynes were obtained in one-sequence by the system. Electrochemical intramolecular C-S coupling for the synthesis of thienoacene was also developed. The use of Bu₄ NBr as a halogen mediator was essential for the reaction.

Recent progress in application of nanocatalysts for carbonylative Suzuki cross-coupling reactions

In the past few decades, cross-coupling of aryl halides and arylboronic acids in the presence of carbon monoxide (CO), also called carbonylative Suzuki coupling, to form two new carbon-carbon bonds in the production of synthetically and biologically important biaryl ketones, has been widely studied. Consequently, various catalytic systems have been extensively investigated in order to maximize the efficiency of this appealing area of biaryl ketone synthesis. As evidenced in the literature, nanometal-based systems are among the most powerful catalysts for this transformation as their large surface area to volume ratio and reactive morphologies allow faster reaction rates under milder CO pressure even at very low catalyst loadings. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent advances and achievements in the application of nano-sized metal catalysts for carbonylative Suzuki cross-coupling reactions, which may serve as an inspiration to researchers in their future work.

Recent trends in the direct oxyphosphorylation of C-C multiple bonds

Due to the wide importance of β-phosphorylated ketones as key building-blocks in the fabrication of various pharmaceutically active organophosphorus compounds, finding new and truly efficient methods for their preparation from simple, low-cost and ubiquitous feedstock materials within a single click is an interesting subject in organic synthesis. Recently, oxyfunctionalization of carbon-carbon multiple bonds has arisen as a straightforward and versatile tool for the synthesis of complex organic molecules from the simple and easily accessible alkenes/alkynes via a single operation. In this context, oxyphosphorylation of alkenes/alkynes with P(O)-H compounds has attracted considerable attention as a unique procedure for the construction of β-phosphorylated ketones. In this review, we outline the recent advances and developments in this fast-growing research field with particular emphasis on the mechanistic aspects of reaction.

Direct sulfonamidation of (hetero)aromatic C-H bonds with sulfonyl azides: a novel and efficient route to N-(hetero)aryl sulfonamides

N-Aryl sulfonamides belong to a highly important class of organosulfur compounds which are found in a number of FDA-approved drugs such as dofetilide, dronedarone, ibutilide, sotalol, sulfadiazine, sulfamethizole, vemurafenib, and many more. There is therefore continuing interest in the development of novel and convenient protocols for the preparation of these pharmaceutically important compounds. Recently, direct sulfonamidation of (hetero)aromatic C–H bonds with easily available sulfonyl azides has emerged as an attractive and powerful strategy to access N-(hetero)aryl sulfonamides where non-toxic nitrogen gas forms as the sole by-product. This review highlights recent advances and developments (2012–2020) in this fast growing research area with emphasis on the mechanistic features of the reactions.

In the last decade, the scientific community has witnessed explosive growth in research on the direct carbamoylation of C-H and X-H (X = N, O) bonds with formamides via cross-dehydrogenative coupling reactions. This novel approach is an effective means of preparing a variety of carboxamide, carbamate as well as urea derivatives, which are prevalent in medicinal chemistry and natural product synthesis. This review elaborates the most important advances and developments in the field, with an emphasis on the reaction patterns and mechanisms.
