Gold(i) sulfide: unusual bonding and an unexpected computational challenge in a simple solid

Paper/GO/e-Au flexible SERS sensors for in situ detection of tricyclazole in orange juice and on cucumber skin at the sub-ppb level: machine learning-assisted data analysis

Despite being an excellent surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active material, gold nanoparticles were difficult to be loaded onto the surface of filter paper to fabricate flexible SERS substrates. In this study, electrochemically synthesized gold nanoparticles (e-AuNPs) were deposited on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets in solution by ultrasonication, resulting in the formation of a GO/Au hybrid material. Thanks to the support of GO, the hybrid material could adhere onto the surface of filter paper, which was immersed into a GO/Au solution for 24 h and dried naturally at room temperature. The paper-based materials were then employed as substrates for a surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing platform to detect tricyclazole (TCZ), a widely used pesticide, resulting in better sensitivity compared to the use of paper/Au SERS sensors. With the most optimal GO content of 4%, paper/GO/Au SERS sensors could achieve a limit of detection of 1.32 × 10-10 M in standard solutions. Furthermore, the filter paper-based SERS sensors also exhibited significant advantages in sample collection in real samples. On one hand, the sensors were dipped into orange juice, allowing TCZ molecules in this real sample to be adsorbed onto their SERS active surface. On the other hand, they were pasted onto cucumber skin to collect the analytes. As a result, the paper/GO/Au SERS sensors could sense TCZ in orange juice and on cucumber skin at concentrations as low as 10-9 M (∼2 ppb). In addition, a machine learning model was designed and developed, allowing the sensing system to discriminate TCZ from nine other organic compounds and predict the presence of TCZ on cucumber skin at concentrations down to 10-9 M.

DFT exchange: sharing perspectives on the workhorse of quantum chemistry and materials science

In this paper, the history, present status, and future of density-functional theory (DFT) is informally reviewed and discussed by 70 workers in the field, including molecular scientists, materials scientists, method developers and practitioners. The format of the paper is that of a roundtable discussion, in which the participants express and exchange views on DFT in the form of 302 individual contributions, formulated as responses to a preset list of 26 questions. Supported by a bibliography of 777 entries, the paper represents a broad snapshot of DFT, anno 2022.

Au with sp3 Hybridization in Li5AuP2

The achievement of new bonding patterns of atoms in compounds is of great importance, which usually induces interesting physical and chemical properties. Rich oxidation states, diverse bonding types, and unique aurophilic attraction endow gold (Au) as a distinctive element. Here we report that a pressure-induced Li₅AuP₂, identified by a swarm intelligence-based structural prediction, becomes the first example of Au with sp³ hybridization. The most remarkable feature of Li₅AuP₂ is that it contains various frameworks made by AuP₄, AuLi₄, LiP₄, and blende-like Li-P units, exhibiting noncentrosymmetry. The charge transfer from Li to Au makes Au 6p orbitals activate and hybridize with the 6s one. On the other hand, Li donating electrons to P and polar Au-P covalence make the constituent atoms satisfy the octet rule, rendering Li₅AuP₂ with a semiconducting character and a large second-order nonlinear optical response in the near-infrared region. Our work represents a significant step toward extending the understanding of gold chemistry.

Two-Dimensional Gold Halides: Novel Semiconductors with Giant Spin-Orbit Splitting and Tunable Optoelectronic Properties

We introduce a new family of 2D materials with unique structure and optoelectronic properties, namely, single-layer gold(I) halides (AuHals). We propose their stability as well as structural, electronic, and optical properties using first-principles calculations. The cleavage energy is found to be similar to that of graphene from graphite, indicating the possibility for mechanical exfoliation. We show that AuHals are stable and have tunable direct (AuBr) and indirect (AuI) band gaps depending on the number of layers. We discuss the possible origin of the giant spin-orbit coupling (SOC) induced conduction band splitting in terms of orbital-decomposed band structure to guide future investigations on the design of materials with highly effective SOC. Exceptionally high excitonic binding energy, high hole mobility, and tunable band gaps indicate that AuHals are promising candidates for optoelectronic devices with excellent performance.

Structural Characterization of Aurophilic Gold(I) Iodide under High Pressure

The effects of pressure on the crystal structure of aurophilic tetragonal gold iodide have been studied by means of powder X-ray diffraction up to 13.5 GPa. We found evidence of the onset of a phase transition at 1.5 GPa that is more significant from 3.8 GPa. The low- and high-pressure phases coexist up to 10.7 GPa. Beyond 10.7 GPa, an irreversible process of amorphization takes place. We determined the axial and bulk compressibility of the ambient-pressure tetragonal phase of gold iodide up to 3.3 GPa. This is extremely compressible with a bulk modulus of 18.1(8) GPa, being as soft as a rare gas, molecular solids, or organometallic compounds. Moreover, its response to pressure is anisotropic.
