A solvent-controlled photoresponsive ionic hydrogen-bonded organic framework for encryption applications

Two novel ionic hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (iHOF-17 and iHOF-18) were obtained by integrating organosulfonic acids with amidine salts. Among them, iHOF-18 exhibits fast, reversible, and high-contrast UV-induced photochromic properties, and this property is solvent-controlled. This work provides valuable insights for designing advanced anti-counterfeiting techniques and encryption applications.

Photoresponsive Supramolecular Cages and Macrocycles

The utilisation of light to achieve precise manipulation and control over the structure and function of supramolecular assemblies has emerged as a highly promising approach in the development of complex, configurable, or multifunctional systems and nanoscopic machine-like entities. In this minireview, we highlight recent examples of self-assembled and covalently bound cages and macrocycles with a focus on the external and internal functionalisation of a structure with a photoswitchable unit or the embedment of a photoswitch into the framework of a structure. Functionalising the interior or exterior of a supramolecular cage or macrocycle with a photoresponsive group enables control over different properties, such as guest binding or assembly in the solid-state, while the overall shape of the assembly often undergoes no significant change. By directly integrating a photoswitchable unit into the framework of a supramolecular structure, the isomerisation can either induce a geometry change, the disassembly, or the disassembly and reassembly of the structure. Historical and recent examples covered in this review are based on azobenzene, diarylethene, stilbene photoswitches, or alkene motors that were incorporated into macrocycles and cages constructed by metal-organic, dynamic covalent, or covalent bonds.

Force-Triggered Atropisomerization of a Parallel Diarylethene to Its Antiparallel Diastereomers

This paper describes a mechanical approach to inducing the atropisomerization of a parallel diarylethene into its antiparallel diastereomers exhibiting distinct chemical reactivity. A congested parallel diarylethene mechanophore in the (R_a,S_a)-configuration with mirror symmetry is atropisomerized to its antiparallel diastereomers with C₂ symmetry under ultrasound-induced force field. The resulting stereochemistry-converted material gains symmetry-allowed reactivity toward conrotatory photocyclization.

Light-regulating chirality of metallacages featuring dithienylethene switches

Dynamic chiral superstructures are of vital importance for understanding the organization and function of chirality in biological systems. However, achieving high conversion efficiency for photoswitches in nanoconfined architectures remains challenging but fascinating. Herein, we report a series of dynamic chiral photoswitches based on supramolecular metallacages through the coordination-driven self-assembly of dithienylethene (DTE) units and octahedral zinc ions, thereby successfully achieving an ultrahigh photoconversion yield of 91.3% in nanosized cavities with a stepwise isomerization mechanism. Interestingly, the chiral inequality phenomenon is observed in metallacages, resulting from the intrinsic photoresponsive chirality in the closed form of the dithienylethene unit. Upon hierarchical organization, we establish a dynamic chiral system at the supramolecular level, featuring chiral transfer, amplification, induction, and manipulation. This study provides an intriguing idea to simplify and understand chiral science.

Selective Binding and Isomerization of Oximes in a Self-Assembled Capsule

A series of straight-chain (C7-C13) alkyl-O-methyl aldoximes (R-C(H)═NOMe) were synthesized with various functional groups at the remote ends (alkenes, halogen, -COOH, and NH₂). Their isomers about the C═N bond showed ∼60-40% E-Z-ratio in organic solutions. Surprisingly, their confinement in a water-soluble capsule with benzoselenodiazole walls shows high selectivity for the cis-/Z-isomer. Their relative affinities for the chalcogen-bonded capsule at room temperature depend mainly on the guest chain length and functional groups. A chain length of 14 heavy atoms showed especially high E- to Z-isomer selectivity (>99%) and was used in separation. The E-Z isomerization occurred only in the capsular cavity at room temperature and was accelerated 10-fold by sonication. The Z-isomer selective binding, separation, and E-Z isomerization are supported by NMR, DOSY, and computational studies.

Metallo-Supramolecular Hexagonal Wreath with Four Switchable States Based on a pH-Responsive Tridentate Ligand

In biological systems, many biomacromolecules (e.g., heme proteins) are capable of switching their states reversibly in response to external stimuli, endowing these natural architectures with a high level of diversity and functionality. Although tremendous efforts have been made to advance the complexity of artificial supramolecules, it remains a challenge to construct metallo-supramolecular systems that can carry out reversible interconversion among multiple states. Here, a pH-responsive tridentate ligand, 2,6-di(1H-imidazole-2-yl)pyridine (H₂DAP), is incorporated into the multitopic building block for precise construction of giant metallo-supramolecular hexagonal wreaths with three metal ions, i.e., Fe(II), Co(II), and Ni(II), through coordination-driven self-assembly. In particular, a Co-linked wreath enables in situ reversible interconversion among four states in response to pH and oxidant/reductant with highly efficient conversion without losing structural integrity. During the state interconversion cycles, the physical properties of the assembled constructs are finely tuned, including the charge states of the backbone, valency of metal ions, and paramagnetic/diamagnetic features of complexes. Such discrete wreath structures with a charge-switchable backbone further facilitate layer-by-layer assembly of metallo-supramolecules on the substrate.

Switchable metallacycles and metallacages

Two-dimensional metallacycles and three-dimensional metallacages constructed by coordination-driven self-assembly have attracted much attention because they exhibit unique structures and properties and are highly efficient to synthesize. Introduction of switching into supramolecular chemistry systems is a popular strategy, as switching can endow systems with reversible features that are triggered by different stimuli. Through this strategy, novel switchable metallacycles and metallacages were generated, which can be reversibly switched into different stable states with distinct characteristics by external stimuli. Switchable metallacycles and metallacages exhibit versatile structures and reversible properties and are inherently dynamic and respond to artificial signals; thus, these structures have many promising applications in a wide range of fields, such as drug delivery, data processing, pollutant removal, switchable catalysis, smart functional materials, etc. This review focuses on the design of switchable metallacycles and metallacages, their switching behaviours and mechanisms triggered by external stimuli, and the corresponding structural changes and resultant properties and functions.

Sterically Hindered Diarylethenes with a Benzobis(thiadiazole) Bridge: Enantiospecific Transformation and Reversible Photosuperstructures

ConspectusPhotochromic diarylethenes featuring reversible regulation by external light irradiation have attracted increasing attention in versatile applications such as logic gates, supramolecular systems, liquid crystals, and super-resolution imaging because of their outstanding bistability and fatigue resistance. However, for typical diarylethene systems, there always exist three typical unsolved issues. The first is how to modulate the bistability between the open and closed forms from the viewpoint of ethene bridge aromaticity. The second is how to decrease and avoid the photoinactive parallel conformer in order to achieve a high quantum yield, since the open form possesses the photoactive antiparallel (ap) conformation and the photoinactive parallel (p) conformation. Because of the typical rapid rotation of the flexible side aryl groups, the two conformers cannot be separated efficiently, thereby resulting in a relatively low photocyclization quantum yield. The third is how to fulfill the enantiospecific transformation with reversibility to photomodulate the chirality. Stereochemically, the ap conformer with C₂ symmetry can be further subdivided into a pair of enantiomers with P and M helicity originating from the central hexatriene moiety. Similarly, the rapid rotation can also lead to the loss of intrinsic chirality, restricting the development and application of light-driven chiroptical switches. Accordingly, it is desirable to construct a specific diarylethene system to break through these bottlenecks for real versatile applications.Our group has recently developed a unique sterically hindered diarylethene system based on benzobis(thiadiazole) as the ethene bridge for completely solving these issues. We introduce a low-aromaticity benzobis(thiadiazole) unit into the diarylethene as a central ethene bridge with incomparably high bistability. To block or freeze the rotation of flexible side aryls, we further incorporate a large bulky benzothiophene unit to induce a large steric hindrance, or rotation barrier, between the ethene bridge and side aryls, thereby successfully separating multiple conformers of the diarylethenes with high photocyclization quantum yields and enantiospecific photoreaction. Consequently, given such a fantastic building block, we enhance its performance by means of supramolecular self-assembly, thereby realizing unique conformer-dependent self-assembly as well as unprecedented concerted isomerization and enantiospecific photoreaction of photoresponsive metallacycles. In addition, decoration of the intrinsically chiral diarylethenes with mesogenic units can enable us to manipulate the helical superstructure of liquid crystals, thus achieving a multiple anticounterfeiting technique and a quadridimensional manipulable laser. We also unravel the dual aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior of the sterically hindered diarylethene, especially as applied in super-resolution imaging.

Future-Oriented Advanced Diarylethene Photoswitches: From Molecular Design to Spontaneous Assembly Systems

Diarylethene (DAE) photoswitch is a new and promising family of photochromic molecules and has shown superior performance as a smart trigger in stimulus-responsive materials. During the past few decades, the DAE family has achieved a leap from simple molecules to functional molecules and developed toward validity as a universal switching building block. In recent years, the introduction of DAE into an assembly system has been an attractive strategy that enables the photochromic behavior of the building blocks to be manifested at the level of the entire system, beyond the DAE unit itself. This assembly-based strategy will bring many unexpected results that promote the design and manufacture of a new generation of advanced materials. Here, recent advances in the design and fabrication of diarylethene as a trigger in materials science, chemistry, and biomedicine are reviewed.

Discrete Platinum(II) Metallacycles with Inner- and Outer-Modified 9,10-Distyrylanthracene: Design, Self-Assembly, and Luminescence Properties

To completely unravel the relationship between structures and luminescence properties of inner- and outer-modified metallacycles, two rhombic metallacycles S1 and S2 with 9,10-distyrylanthracene (DSA) were constructed herein via the design of DSA moieties on the inside or outside of metallacycles. Similar building blocks of the two metallacycles led to the same emission wavelengths in a dilute solution. In contrast, their fluorescence emissions in the aggregation and solid states were significantly different and revealed interesting emission behaviors from structures with inner- and outer-modified design. Finally, based on their luminescence properties, a tunable solid-state fluorescence emissive material was easily obtained by the mixing of two supramolecules in different ratios. This unique design suggested that the modified position of fluorophores exerts a key impact on the adjustment of luminescence from a dilute solution to the aggregated state and will be of great significance for the development of luminescent materials based on supramolecules.

Highly Emissive Multipurpose Organoplatinum(II) Metallacycles with Contrasting Mechanoresponsive Features

The development of supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) with a bright aggregate state or mechanical-stimuli-responsive luminescence is very significant and challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of three different supramolecular platinum(II) metallacycles via coordination-driven self-assembly of a diplatinum(II) acceptor and organic donors with a triphenylamine, carbazole, or tetraphenylethylene moiety. The triphenylamine-modified SCC exhibits aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) but no mechanofluorochromism. The carbazole and tetraphenylethylene-based SCCs exhibit changes in aggregate fluorescence and also exhibit reversible mechanofluorochromism. This work not only reports three rare metallacycles with AIEE, aggregate fluorescence change, or mechanofluorochromic nature but also explores their potential applications in cell imaging and solid-state lighting.

Light-Powered Dissipative Assembly of Diazocine Coordination Cages

Stimuli-responsive coordination cages allow reversible control over guest binding and release, relevant for adaptive receptors, carriers, catalysts, and complex systems. Light serves as an advantageous stimulus, as it can be applied with precise spatial and temporal resolution without producing chemical waste products. We report the first Pd-mediated coordination cage based on ligands embedding a diazocine photoswitch. While the thermodynamically more stable cis-photoisomer sloppily assembles to a mixture of species with general formula [Pd_ncis-L_2n], the less stable trans-isomer yields a defined [Pd₂trans-L₄] cage that reversibly converts back to the cis-system by irradiation at 530 nm or thermal relaxation. The [Pd_ncis-L_2n] species do not bind a given guest; however, [Pd₂trans-L₄] is able to encapsulate a bis-sulfonate as long as it is kept assembled, requiring continuous irradiation at 385 nm. In the absence of UV light, thermal relaxation results in back-switching and guest release. Assembly and properties of the system were characterized by a combination of NMR, ion mobility ESI-MS, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and UV–vis absorption studies.

Competition of Hydrogen Bonds and Coordinate Bonds Induces a Reversible Crystal Transformation

Achieving reversible molecular crystal transformation between coordinate aggregates and hydrogen bonded assemblies has been a challenging task because coordinate bonds are generally much stronger than hydrogen bonds. Recently, we have reported the incorporation of silver ions into the cyanuric acid-melamine (CAM) network, resulting in the formation of a 1D coordination polymer (crystal 1) through forming the κ₁N-Ag-κ₂N coordination bonds. In this work, we find crystal 1 will undergo reversible transformation to hydrogen bonded coordinate units (crystal 2) through the breaking of coordinate chains and then the addition of CAM hydrogen bonding motifs into the framework. Crystal 2 presents a pseudohexagonal arrangement comprised of the κ₁N-Ag-κ₂N units connected by two sets of the triple hydrogen bonds, which extends two-dimensionally and stacks into a layer-structured crystal. Light was shed on the tautomerization of CA and M ligands associated with the crystal transformations using single crystal X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy by analyzing the bond lengths and vibrations. We also highlight that photoluminescence can be a useful tool to probe the tautomer conversions of conjugated molecules. Furthermore, crystal 1 demonstrates high flexibility and can be bent over 180° and recover to its original shape after stress release. Crystal 2, on the contrary, is brittle and shows distinct mechanical anisotropy along different crystal orientations, as unveiled by nanoindentation measurements. The elastic modulus is well correlated with the chemical bonding strength along each orientation, and it is noteworthy that the contribution of the triple hydrogen bonds is comparable to that of the coordination bonds.

Photoswitchable Fluorescent Self-Assembled Metallacycles with High Photostability

In this study, photoswitchable fluorescent supramolecular metallacycles with high fatigue-resistance have been constructed by coordination-driven self-assembly by using bithienylethene with dipyridyl units (BTE) as a coordination donor and a fluorescent di-platinum(II) (Pt-F) as a coordination acceptor. The photo-triggered reversible transformation between the ring-open and ring-closed form of the metallacycles was confirmed by ¹ H NMR, ³¹ P NMR, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. This unique property enabled a reversible noninvasive "off-on" switching of fluorescence through efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Importantly, the metallacycles remained structurally intact after up to 10 photoswitching cycles. The photoresponsive property and exceptional photostability of the metallacycles posit their potential promising application in optical switching, image storage, and super-resolution microscopy.

The modulation effect of pi–pi interactions on the electronic and photochromic properties of viologen complexes containing N,N′-bis(carboxyethyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium

Two viologen complexes containing N,N′-bis(carboxyethyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium (BCEbpy) were prepared, namely [Zn(H₂O)₆]·(BCEbpy)·(p-BDC)·3H₂O (1) and [Co(H₂O)₆]·(BCEbpy)·(p-BDC)·3H₂O (2) (p-H₂BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid), and their crystal structures, photochromism, frontier molecular orbitals, Hirshfeld surfaces and 2D fingerprint plots were investigated. The modulation effects of pi–pi interactions were explored on the electronic and photochromic properties of compounds 1 and 2. Due to the existence of photo-response viologen radicals, both complexes 1 and 2 display excellent photo-response properties in the sequence 1 < 2. The results indicate that compound 1 exhibits intramolecular electron transfer; compound 2 exhibits both intramolecular and intermolecular electron transfer, which is mainly due to the change of electronic and steric structures caused by pi–pi interactions with a faster photo-response rate than that of compound 1. The donor–acceptor modes, matching principles and inter/intramolecular atom–atom close contacts were illustrated by the density functional theory (DFT)-B3LYP/6-311(d,p) method.

Two viologen complexes containing BCEbpy were prepared and displayed excellent photo-response properties by the modulation effect of pi–pi interactions.

Combining Coordination and Hydrogen Bonds to Develop Discrete Supramolecular Metalla-Assemblies

In Nature, metal ions play critical roles at different levels, and they are often found in proteins. Therefore, metal ions are naturally incorporated in hydrogen-bonded systems. In addition, the combination of metal coordination and hydrogen bonds have been used extensively to develop supramolecular materials. However, despite this win-win combination between coordination and hydrogen bonds in many supramolecular systems, the same combination remains scarce in the field of coordination-driven self-assemblies. Indeed, as illustrated in this mini-review, only a few discrete supramolecular metalla-assemblies combining coordination and hydrogen bonds can be found in the literature, but that figure might change rapidly.
