Fast and Selective Main-Chain Scission of Vinyl Polymers Using the Domino Reaction in the Alternating Sequence for Transesterification

This communication reports on vinyl polymers capable of selective and fast main-chain scission (MCS). The trick is the domino reaction in an alternating sequence of methyl 2-(trimethylsiloxymethyl)acrylate and 5,6-benzo-2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane, a cyclic ketene acetal for radical ring-opening polymerization. Removal of the trimethylsilyl group using Bu4N+·F- readily led to MCS via irreversible transesterification of the ester backbone, affording a five-membered lactone fragment. The molar mass decreased drastically within 5 min, and no side reactions were observed. Control experiments suggest that the formation of a five-membered ring via a domino reaction is critical for fast and selective MCS. The terpolymers with methyl methacrylate and styrene also exhibited a large decrease in molar mass within 5 min. In addition, MCS was also observed for the heterogeneous reaction system in acidic aqueous media; treatment of the binary copolymer in a 50 wt % acetic acid solution resulted in a significant decrease in molar mass after 30 min. These results suggest efficient construction of degradable sites using a binary monomer system corresponding to the pendant trigger and ester backbone. Because this molecular design using a binary monomer system provides selective and fast MCS for terpolymers containing other vinyl monomers, it can provide various degradable vinyl polymers.

Solvent Swelling-Induced Halogenation of Butyl Rubber Using Polychlorinated N-Alkanes: Structure and Properties

Traditional butyl rubber halogenation technology involves the halogenation of IIR using molecular chlorine or bromine in a solution. However, this method is technologically complex. This study investigated a novel method for the halogenation of butyl rubber to enhance its stability and resistance to thermal oxidation and aggressive media. The butyl rubber was modified through mechanochemical modification, induced by solvent swelling in a polychlorinated n-alkane solution. During the modification, samples were obtained with chlorine content ranging from 3 to 15%. After extraction, the halogen content was quantitatively determined with the oxygen flask combustion method and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was shown that for samples with total chlorine content of up to 6%, there was almost no leaching of chlorine from the samples. The chemical structure of the extracted rubbers was ascertained using FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, and it was demonstrated that all samples showed absorption peaks and signals typical for chlorobutyl rubbers. It was observed that modification with polychlorinated n-alkanes improved the thermal and oxidative stability (the oxygen absorption rate decreased by 40%) and chemical resistance, estimated by the degree of swelling, which decreased with the increase in the chlorine content. This technology allows the production of a chlorinated rubber solution that can be directly used by rubber goods manufacturers and suppliers.

Polythioethers bearing side groups for efficient degradation by E1cB reaction: reaction design for polymerization and main-chain scission

We have previously reported the polycondensation by the tandem reactions of dithiols and α-(bromomethyl)acrylates, consisting of conjugate substitution (SN2' reaction) and conjugate addition (Michael addition) reactions. The resulting polythioethers underwent a main-chain scission (MCS) by E1cB reaction, which is the reverse reaction of conjugate addition, although it was not quantitative due to the equilibrium. Herein, the modification of the structures of polythioethers led to irreversible MCS, whereby the β-positions of ester moieties were substituted with a phenyl group. This slight modification in the polymer structure influenced the monomer structures and polymerization mechanisms. The understanding of reaction mechanisms by model reactions was required to obtain high molecular weights of polythioethers. It was clarified that the consequent additions of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO), 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), and PBu3 were effective to achieve high molecular weight. The resulting polythioethers decomposed by irreversible MCS via E1cB reaction with DBU.

Swelling-Activated, Soft Mechanochemistry in Polymer Materials

Swelling in polymer materials is a ubiquitous phenomenon. At a molecular level, swelling is dictated by solvent-polymer interactions, and has been thoroughly studied both theoretically and experimentally. Favorable solvent-polymer interactions result in the solvation of polymer chains. For polymers in confined geometries, such as those that are tethered to surfaces, or for polymer networks, solvation can lead to swelling-induced tensions. These tensions act on polymer chains and can lead to stretching, bending, or deformation of the material both at the micro- and macroscopic scale. This Invited Feature Article sheds light on such swelling-induced mechanochemical phenomena in polymer materials across dimensions, and discusses approaches to visualize and characterize these effects.

Dynamic Surfaces-Degradable Polyester Networks that Resist Protein Adsorption

We synthesized a series of novel degradable alternating copolyesters composed of diglycolic anhydride (DGA) and two epoxides, epoxymethoxytriethylene glycol (ETEG) and a photoactive crosslinking agent epoxy benzophenone (EBP). After UV crosslinking, soaking the films in a good solvent (tetrahydrofuran) removed uncrosslinked material, and the resulting film gel fractions were calculated. These network films were then degraded in buffer solutions of varying pH values. The degradation of networks with lower gel fraction (fewer crosslinks) was faster and followed first-order kinetics. In contrast, the denser network degraded slower and followed zeroth-order kinetics. The lower gel fraction networks possess a higher swelling ratio and resist bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption better by entropic shielding and faster degradation. In comparison, higher gel fraction networks with higher EBP mole fractions adsorb more BSA due to hydrophobic interactions and slower degradation.

Can one determine the density of an individual synthetic macromolecule?

Dendronized polymers (DPs) are large and compact main-chain linear polymers with a cylindrical shape and cross-sectional diameters of up to ∼15 nm. They are therefore considered molecular objects, and it was of interest whether given their experimentally accessible, well-defined dimensions, the density of individual DPs could be determined. We present measurements on individual, deposited DP chains, providing molecular dimensions from scanning and transmission electron microscopy and mass-per-length values from quantitative scanning transmission electron microscopy. These results are compared with density values obtained from small-angle X-ray scattering on annealed bulk specimen and with classical envelope density measurements, obtained using hydrostatic weighing or a density gradient column. The samples investigated comprise a series of DPs with side groups of dendritic generations g = 1-8. The key findings are a very large spread of the density values over all samples and methods, and a consistent increase of densities with g over all methods. While this work highlights the advantages and limitations of the applied methods, it does not provide a conclusive answer to the question of which method(s) to use for the determination of densities of individual molecular objects. We are nevertheless confident that these first attempts to answer this challenging question will stimulate more research into this important aspect of polymer and soft matter science.

Cleavage of the Graft Bonds in PVDF-g-St Films by Boiling Xylene Extraction and the Determination of the Molecular Weight of the Graft Chains

To determine the molecular weight of graft chains in grafted films, the polystyrene graft chains of PVDF-g-St films synthesized by a pre-irradiation graft method are cleaved and separated by boiling xylene extraction. The analysis of the extracted material and the residual films by FTIR, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analyses indicates that most graft chains are removed from the PVDF-g-St films within 72 h of extraction time. Furthermore, the molecular weight of the residual films decreases quickly within 8 h of extraction and then remains virtually unchanged up to 72 h after extraction time. The degradation is due to the cleavage of graft bonds, which is mainly driven by the thermal degradation and the swelling of graft chains in solution. This allows determination of the molecular weight of graft chains by GPC analysis of the extracted material. The results indicate that the PVDF-g-St prepared in this study has the structure where one or two graft chains hang from each PVDF backbone.
