Enhanced three-photon activity triggered by the AIE behaviour of a novel terpyridine-based Zn(ii) complex bearing a thiophene bridge

Harnessing Metal-Organic Frameworks for NIR-II Light-Driven Multiphoton Photocatalytic Water Splitting in Hydrogen Therapy

The construction of near-infrared (NIR) light-activated hydrogen-producing materials that enable the controlled generation and high-concentration release of hydrogen molecules in deep tumor tissues and enhance the effects of hydrogen therapy holds significant scientific importance. To address the key technical challenge of low-efficiency oxidation-reduction reactions for narrow-bandgap photocatalytic materials, this work proposes an innovative approach for the controllable fabrication of multiphoton photocatalytic materials to overcome the limitations imposed by traditional near-infrared photocatalysts with "narrow-bandgap" constraints. Herein, an NIR-responsive multiphoton photocatalyst, ZrTc-Co, is developed by utilizing a post-synthetic coordination modification strategy to introduce hydrogenation active site CoII into a multiphoton responsive MOF (ZrTc). The results reveal that with the introduction of the CoII site, electron-hole recombination can be efficiently suppressed, thus promoting the efficiency of hydrogen evolution reaction. In addition, the integration of CoII can effectively enhance charge transfer and improve static hyperpolarizability, which endows ZrTc-Co with excellent multiphoton absorption. Moreover, hyaluronic acid modification endows ZrTc-Co with cancer cell-specific targeting characteristics, laying the foundation for tumor-specific elimination. Collectively, the proposed findings present a strategy for constructing NIR-II light-mediated hydrogen therapeutic agents for deep tumor elimination.

Nanoscale myelinogenesis image in developing brain via super-resolution nanoscopy by near-infrared emissive curcumin-BODIPY derivatives

Understanding the intricate nanoscale architecture of neuronal myelin during central nervous system development is of utmost importance. However, current visualization methods heavily rely on electron microscopy or indirect fluorescent method, lacking direct and real-time imaging capabilities. Here, we introduce a breakthrough near-infrared emissive curcumin-BODIPY derivative (MyL-1) that enables direct visualization of myelin structure in brain tissues. The remarkable compatibility of MyL-1 with stimulated emission depletion nanoscopy allows for unprecedented super-resolution imaging of myelin ultrastructure. Through this innovative approach, we comprehensively characterize the nanoscale myelinogenesis in three dimensions over the course of brain development, spanning from infancy to adulthood in mouse models. Moreover, we investigate the correlation between myelin substances and Myelin Basic Protein (MBP), shedding light on the essential role of MBP in facilitating myelinogenesis during vertebral development. This novel material, MyL-1, opens up new avenues for studying and understanding the intricate process of myelinogenesis in a direct and non-invasive manner, paving the way for further advancements in the field of nanoscale neuroimaging.

Photoluminescence and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Two Terpyridine-Based Hybrid Zn/Cd Halides

Hybrid metal halides (HMHs) with low-dimensional structures have attracted increasing attention due to their striking optical properties. Herein, two new zero-dimensional HMHs have been fabricated by CdCl2/ZnCl2 and 4'-(4-pyridyl-phenyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (Tpy), including (TpyH3)[CdCl4][Cl] (Tpy-Cd) and (TpyH3)[ZnCl4][Cl] (Tpy-Zn). Their structures are consisted of a [TpyH3]3+ organic cation, an inorganic [ZnCl4] or [CdCl4] tetrahedron, and one isolated Cl- anion. Tpy-Cd crystallizes to a noncentrosymmetric structure and possesses a moderate second harmonic response of 0.72 × KH2PO4, while Tpy-Zn features a centrosymmetric space group. Though Tpy-Cd and Tpy-Zn crystallize into space groups of completely different symmetry due to distinct connection mode and molecular distortion, they display quite similar photoluminescence of bright green light emission under ultraviolet excitation, nearly identical in Stokes shift, photoluminescence quantum yield, decay lifetime, and energy. The photoluminescence quantum yields of green light emission were measured to be nearly 25%, outperforming most of the Cd/Zn low-dimensional HMHs.

Restriction of intramolecular rotation for functionalizing metal nanoclusters

The restriction of intramolecular rotation has been extensively exploited to trigger the property enhancement of nanocluster-based materials. However, such a restriction is induced mainly by intermolecular aggregation. The direct restriction of intramolecular rotation of metal nanoclusters, which could boost their properties at the single molecular level, remains rarely explored. Here, ligand engineering was applied to activate intramolecular interactions at the interface between peripheral ligands and metallic kernels of metal nanoclusters. For the newly reported Au4Ag13(SPhCl2)9(DPPM)3 nanocluster, the molecule-level interactions between the Cl terminals on thiol ligands and the Ag atoms on the cluster kernel remarkably restricted the intramolecular rotation, endowing this robust nanocluster with superior thermal stability, emission intensity, and non-linear optical properties over its cluster analogue. This work presents a novel case of the restriction of intramolecular rotation (i.e., intramolecular interaction-induced property enhancement) for functionalizing metal clusters at the single molecular level.

Lighting up RNA-specific multi-photon and super-resolution imaging using a novel zinc complex

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) probes are critical for understanding the role of RNA dynamics in cellular function but are in short supply due to the lack of optimized imaging systems and excellent fluorescence emission performance. Here, the terpyridine Zn(II) complex (Zn-T) with D-π-A configuration and bright aggregation-induced fluorescence emission (AIE) has been fabricated for the selective detection and real-time monitoring of RNA. Impressively, Zn-T exhibits a large Stokes shift and three-photon absorption (3PA) activity and responds specifically through hydrophobic interactions with an RNA pocket. The combination of AIE-assisted two-photon fluorescence and stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy of Zn-T for imaging nuclear RNA has higher spatial resolution and brightness, thus providing an imaging platform for studying RNA-related physiological or pathological processes.

Mitochondrial dysfunction-targeted nanosystems for precise tumor therapeutics

Mitochondria play critical roles in the regulation of the proliferation and apoptosis of cancerous cells. Targeted induction of mitochondrial dysfunction in cancer cells by multifunctional nanosystems for cancer treatment has attracted increasing attention in the past few years. Numerous therapeutic nanosystems have been designed for precise tumor therapy by inducing mitochondrial dysfunction, including reducing adenosine triphosphate, breaking redox homeostasis, inhibiting glycolysis, regulating proteins, membrane potential depolarization, mtDNA damage, mitophagy dysregulation and so on. Understanding the mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction would be helpful for efficient treatment of diseases and accelerating the translation of these therapeutic strategies into the clinic. Then, various strategies to construct mitochondria-targeted nanosystems and induce mitochondrial dysfunction are summarized, and the recent research progress regarding precise tumor therapeutics is highlighted. Finally, the major challenges and an outlook in this rapidly developing field are discussed. This review is expected to inspire further development of novel mitochondrial dysfunction-based strategies for precise treatments of cancer and other human diseases.

Giant Multi‐Photon Absorption by Heptazine Organometalation

Multi‐photon absorption (MPA) is of increasing interest for applications in technologically important “windows” of the electromagnetic spectrum (near‐infrared III, NIR‐III, 1550–1870 nm; and the new 2080–2340 nm region); however, few molecules exist that display strong MPA at these long wavelengths. We herein report the syntheses of the first 2,5,8‐s‐heptazine‐cored organometallic complexes, together with organic analogues. The complexes exhibit outstanding 3PA cross‐sections in the NIR‐III and exceptional 4PA cross‐sections in the new 2080–2340 nm window. We demonstrate that replacing organic donor groups by organometallic units results in an order of magnitude increase in 3PA, the “switching on” of 4PA, and a dramatic improvement in photo‐stability. Our results highlight the impressive outcomes possible with an “organometalation” approach to NLO materials design.

Coordination-Regulated Terpyridine-Mn(II) Complexes for Photodynamic Therapy Guided by Multiphoton Fluorescence/Magnetic Resonance Imaging

The synergy of multiphoton fluorescence imaging (MP-FI) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides an imaging platform with high resolution and unlimited penetration depth for early disease detection. Herein, two kinds of terpyridine-Mn(II) complexes (FD-Mn-O₂NO and FD-Mn-FD) possessing seven and six coordination modes, respectively, were designed rationally for photodynamic therapy (PDT) guided by MP-FI/MRI. The complexes obtain different multiphoton fluorescence/magnetic resonance properties by adjusting the number of terpyridine ligands. Among them, FD-Mn-FD exhibits the following superiorities: (1) The optimal three-photon excitation wavelength of FD-Mn-FD falls at 1450 nm (NIR-II), which brings high sensitivity and deep tissue penetration in MP-FI. (2) FD-Mn-FD has effective longitudinal relaxation efficiency (r₁ = 2.6 m M^-1 s^-1), which can be used for T₁-weighted MRI, overcoming the problems of limited tissue penetration depth and low spatial resolution. (3) FD-Mn-FD generates endogenous ¹O₂ under irradiation by 808 nm light, thereby enhancing the PDT effect in vitro and in vivo. To the best of our knowledge, the complex FD-Mn-FD is the first complex to guide PDT through MP-FI/MRI, providing a blueprint for accurate and effective early detection and timely treatment of the complex in the early stages of cancer.

A potent luminogen with NIR-IIb excitable AIE features for ultradeep brain vascular and hemodynamic three-photon imaging

Three-photon excited fluorescence microscopy (3PEFM) has emerged as a promising protocol for visualizing deep-brain vasculature and hemodynamics. However, the current situation is still far from satisfactory, due to small excitation action cross-section and short excitation wavelength of those previously reported 3PEFM luminogens. Herein, we manipulated molecular engineering by subtly regulating structural planarization/twisting to achieve ingenious integration of large three-photon absorption cross-section, high fluorescence quantum yield, ultralong near-infrared IIb excitation, and aggregation-induced emission features. The resulting molecule, namely DPCZ-BT, exhibited as high as 50.6% of fluorescence quantum yield and as large as 2.0 × 10-81 cm6s2/photon2 of three-photon absorption cross-section, which can be excited by 1665 nm fs laser and presents a recorded penetration depth of 1860 μm for deep-brain vascular structural imaging with high spatiotemporal resolution and signal-to-background ratio. Moreover, DPCZ-BT having good photostability and excellent biocompatibility is capable of impressively approaching 1600 μm depth in monitoring red blood cells flow velocity with extraordinary clarity for hemodynamics.

Ratiometric fluorescence chemodosimeter for hydrazine in aqueous solution and gas phase based on Quinoline-Malononitrile

The widespread use of Hydrazine (N₂H₄) in many areas of the chemical industry, brings potential risks to human health and environmental pollution. To detect N₂H₄ effectively, a simple ratio fluorescence probe (QMM), designed and synthesized through Vilsmeier reaction and Knoevenagel reaction, was prepared for the specific response of N₂H₄ based on the irreversible chemical reaction. The ratiometric fluorescence chemodosimeter displayed a response for hydrazine with high selectivity, sensitivity and anti-interference ability. The measured detection limit is 38.30 nm (0.122 ppb), which is far lower than the maximum allowable level of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (10 ppb). Moreover, test paper and TLC plates loading QMM had been made, which could be utilized to detect hydrazine both in aqueous solution samples and in gas phase samples. Thus QMM could serve as an easily manufactured, low-cost, efficient and portable solid-state optical probe to detect hydrazine in field measurements.

Fine Tuning of Multiphoton AIE Emission Behavior, Organelle Targeting, and Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging of Terpyridine Derivatives by Alkyl Chain Engineering

In this work, a series of multiphoton terpyridine agents (ZA, ZA-Mex, and ZA-Hex) for fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) are designed and synthesized. The results from photophysical property research reveal that ZA-Hex, as an N-hexylated terpyridine salt, has stronger three-photon aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties compared to ZA-Mex due to enhanced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) performance. All three terpyridine derivatives possess suitable fluorescence intensities and stable fluorescence lifetimes under different pH conditions (pH = 4.0-8.0), thereby performing multiphoton fluorescence lifetime imaging. For biological imaging applications, it is found that ZA shows good lipid droplet (LD) turn-on fluorescence performance, and ZA-Hex could easily accumulate in mitochondria with high specificity. This is the first report of terpyridine salts as three-photon AIE probes used for multiphoton FLIM imaging.

Excellent Multiphoton Excitation Fluorescence with Large Multiphoton Absorption Cross Sections of Arginine-Modified Gold Nanoclusters for Bioimaging

Fluorescent gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) with excellent one-photon and multiphoton properties have been demonstrated as promising candidates in many application fields. However, small multiphoton absorption (MPA) cross sections and weak multiphoton excitation (MPE) fluorescence impede their practical applications under near-infrared (NIR) excitation for biological imaging. Here, we report the regulated one-photon and multiphoton properties and mechanisms of arginine-stabilized 6-aza-2-thiothymine Au NCs (Arg/ATT-Au NCs) and the applications for MPE fluorescence imaging. The introduction of arginine into the capping layer of ATT-Au NCs significantly modifies the electronic structure, the absorption cross sections, and the relaxation dynamics of the lowest excited state, drastically reducing the nonradiative relaxation, suppressing the blinking, and greatly enhancing the fluorescence. Besides the improved one-photon properties, Arg/ATT-Au NCs demonstrate remarkable MPE fluorescence with a large MPA cross section. The two-photon (λ_ex = 850 nm), three-photon (λ_ex = 1400 nm), and four-photon (λ_ex = 1700 nm) absorption cross sections have been determined to be 6.1 × 10^-47 cm⁴ s¹ photon^-1, 1.5 × 10^-78 cm⁶ s² photon^-2, and 5.5 × 10^-108 cm⁸ s³ photon^-3, respectively, much higher than those of conventional organic compounds and previously reported Au NCs. Moreover, Arg/ATT-Au NCs have been successfully applied in two-photon and three-photon excitation fluorescence imaging of living cells with NIR excitation. The manifold advantages of small size, high quantum yield, suppressed blinking, good photostability and cytocompatibility, large MPA cross sections, and excellent MPE fluorescence imaging performances make fluorescent Arg/ATT-Au NCs a great candidate of imaging probes with vis-NIR excitation.

Halogen-modified carbazole derivatives for lipid droplet-specific bioimaging and two-photon photodynamic therapy

Lipid droplets (LDs) are dynamic multifunctional organelles that participate in the regulation of many metabolic processes, visualization of which is necessary for biological research. In this work, a series of two-photon responsive fluorescent probes (C-H, C-Br, and C-I) based on carbazole units were designed and synthesized. Thereinto, an iodine-modified carbazole derivative C-I exhibited an exciting lipid droplet targeting ability due to its excellent lipophilicity. Meanwhile, benefiting from its larger Stokes shift and two-photon absorption cross-section, C-I was employed for two-photon confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy imaging to observe LDs more accurately. In addition, given the heavy atom effect, C-I can effectively generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) leading to cancer cell apoptosis under near-infrared light irradiation. Notably, we explained the process of cell apoptosis through in vitro simulation experiments. This study provides a promising platform for visualization of lipid droplets.

Metal-Based Aggregation-Induced Emission Theranostic Systems

Efficient theranostic systems can realize better outcomes in disease treatment because of precise diagnosis and the concomitant effective therapy. Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) are a unique type of organic emitters with intriguing photophysical properties in the aggregate state. Among the AIEgens studied for biomedical applications, so far, metal-based AIE systems have shown great potential in theranostics due to the enhanced multimodal bioimaging ability and therapeutic effect. This research field has been growing rapidly, and many rationally designed systems with promising activities to cancer and other diseases have been reported recently. In this review, we summarized the recent progress of metal-based AIE materials in bioimaging and biological theranostics, and deciphered the pertinent design strategies. We hope that this review can offer new insights into the development of this growing field.

Multi-photon absorption organotin complex for bioimaging and promoting ROS generation

Compared to general fluorescent dyes, multi-photon fluorescent dyes exhibit deeper tissue penetration and lower auto-fluorescence in the bio-imaging field. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an efficient multiphoton imaging agent for deep tissue imaging. In this work, an organotin derivative (HSnBu₃) has been designed and synthesized, which shows multiphoton absorption activity. In constrast to the ignorable three-photon activity of the ligand, the complex (HSnBu₃) exhibits three-photon activity under NIR excitation (1500 nm). Results of chemical and biological tests confirmed that HSnBu₃ was more easily activated by oxygen resulting in a higher level of ¹O₂, which could induce a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential in HepG2 cells. It suggests that HSnBu₃ has potential in photodynamic therapy.

Anisotropic Two-Photon Absorption and Second Harmonic Generation in Single Crystals of Silver(I) Coordination Complexes

Metal complexes have been gaining attention in recent times over the traditional inorganic materials such as nonlinear optical materials. Here, we report both two-photon absorption (2PA) and second harmonic generation (SHG) from single crystals of two Ag(I) complexes with considerable optical anisotropy. We demonstrate that by controlling the incident light polarization, the tunability between these two nonlinear optical processes can be achieved. The d_eff values of the observed SHG from one complex are determined to be one order of magnitude greater than β-BBO crystals.

Zinc (II) and AIEgens: The "Clip Approach" for a Novel Fluorophore Family. A Review

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) compounds display a photophysical phenomenon in which the aggregate state exhibits stronger emission than the isolated units. The common term of "AIEgens" was coined to describe compounds undergoing the AIE effect. Due to the recent interest in AIEgens, the search for novel hybrid organic-inorganic compounds with unique luminescence properties in the aggregate phase is a relevant goal. In this perspective, the abundant, inexpensive, and nontoxic d10 zinc cation offers unique opportunities for building AIE active fluorophores, sensing probes, and bioimaging tools. Considering the novelty of the topic, relevant examples collected in the last 5 years (2016-2021) through scientific production can be considered fully representative of the state-of-the-art. Starting from the simple phenomenological approach and considering different typological and chemical units and structures, we focused on zinc-based AIEgens offering synthetic novelty, research completeness, and relevant applications. A special section was devoted to Zn(II)-based AIEgens for living cell imaging as the novel technological frontier in biology and medicine.

Photodynamic Therapy Directed by Three-Photon Active Rigid Plane Organic Photosensitizer

Multi-photon photosensitizers (PSs) could significantly improve the efficacy of photodynamic therapy due to the long-wavelength favorability for deeper tissue penetration and lower biological damage. However, most studies are limited to single-photon or two-photon PSs at a relatively short-wave excitation window. To overcome this barrier, we rationally design a series of rigid plane compounds with efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in vitro under laser irradiation. Furthermore, the studies show that one of the compounds (U-TsO) could induce rapid multi-types of cell death under three-photon exposure, suggesting a promising clinical outcome in ex vivo 3D multicellular tumor spheroid. This work offers a novel strategy to construct functional materials with competitive multi-photon photodynamic therapy (PDT) outcome.

Click Modification of a Metal-Organic Framework for Two-Photon Photodynamic Therapy with Near-Infrared Excitation

The exploitation of effective strategies to develop materials bearing deep tissue focal fluorescence imaging capacity and excellent reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation ability is of great interest to address the high-priority demand of photodynamic therapy (PDT). Therefore, we use a rational strategy to fabricate a two-photon-active metal-organic framework via a click reaction (PCN-58-Ps). Moreover, PCN-58-Ps is capped with hyaluronic acid through coordination to obtain cancer cell-specific targeting properties. As a result, the optimized composite PCN-58-Ps-HA exhibits considerable two-photon activity (upon laser excitation at a wavelength of 910 nm) and excellent light-triggered ROS (¹O₂ and O₂^•-) generation ability. In summary, the interplay of these two critical factors within the PCN-58-Ps-HA framework gives rise to near-infrared light-activated two-photon PDT for deep tissue cancer imaging and treatment, which has great potential for future clinical applications.

Functional Platinum(II) Complexes with Four-Photon Absorption Activity, Lysosome Specificity, and Precise Cancer Therapy

Multiphoton materials are in special demand in the field of photodynamic therapy and multiphoton fluorescence imaging. However, rational design methodology for these brands of materials is still nascent. This is despite transition-metal complexes favoring optimized nonlinear-optical (NLO) activity and heavy-atom-effected phosphorescent emission. Here, three four-photon absorption (4PA) platinum(II) complexes (Pt1-Pt3) are achieved by the incorporation of varied functionalized C^N^C ligands with high yields. Pt1-Pt3 exhibit triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transitions at ∼460 nm, which are verified multiple times by transient absorption spectra, time-dependent density functional theory calculations, and low-temperature emission spectra. Further, Pt1-Pt3 undergo 4PA. Notably, one of the complexes, Pt2, has maximum 4PA cross-sectional values of up to 15.2 × 10^-82 cm⁸ s³ photon^-3 under excitation of a 1600 nm femtosecond laser (near-IR II window). The 4PA cross sections vary when Pt2 is binding to lecithin and when it displays its lysosome-specific targeting behavior. On the basis of the excellent 4PA property of Pt2, we believe that those 4PA platinum(II) complexes have great potential applications in cancer theranostics.

4′-(5-N-Propylthiophen-2-yl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine

A new thiophene-substituted terpyridine derivative has been prepared through the reaction between 5-n-propylthiophene-2-carboxaldehyde and 2-acetylpyridine. This terpyridine derivative bears an alkyl chain linked via a thiophene heterocycle.

A multi-photon fluorescent probe based on quinoline groups for the highly selective and sensitive detection of lipid droplets

Compared to general fluorescent probes, multi-photon fluorescent probes exhibit deeper tissue penetration, lower auto-fluorescence and lower photo-toxicity in the bio-imaging field. Herein, we synthesized a series multi-photon fluorescent probe (L1-L3) based on quinolone groups. Of notably, the three-photon fluorescence of L3 significantly enhanced when L3 interacted with liposome; moreover, L3 exhibited high selectivity towards lipid droplets in living cells. Due to its large Stokes shift, high selectivity and photon-stability, L3 was successfully used in lipid droplet imaging via multi-photon fluorescence bio-imaging.

Unexpected disruption of the dimensionality-driven two-photon absorption enhancement within a multipolar polypyridyl ruthenium complex series

The dimensionality-driven two-photon absorption (2PA) enhancement effect is investigated in a series of functionalized bipyridyl Ru-complexes. Our design strategy leads to very high 2PA responses up to ∼1500 GM. However, we highlight that the 2PA performance vs. dimensionality correlation reaches an unexpected limit stemming from 'anti-cooperative' interchromophoric couplings.

The Role of Zinc(II) Ion in Fluorescence Tuning of Tridentate Pincers: A Review

Tridentate ligands are simple low-cost pincers, easy to synthetize, and able to guarantee stability to the derived complexes. On the other hand, due to its unique mix of structural and optical properties, zinc(II) ion is an excellent candidate to modulate the emission pattern as desired. The present work is an overview of selected articles about zinc(II) complexes showing a tuned fluorescence response with respect to their tridentate ligands. A classification of the tridentate pincers was carried out according to the binding donor atom groups, specifically nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur donor atoms, and depending on the structure obtained upon coordination. Fluorescence properties of the ligands and the related complexes were compared and discussed both in solution and in the solid state, keeping an eye on possible applications.

UV-Vis-NIR Full-Range Responsive Carbon Dots with Large Multiphoton Absorption Cross Sections and Deep-Red Fluorescence at Nucleoli and In Vivo

Carbon dots (CDs), with excellent optical property and cytocompatibility, are an ideal class of nanomaterials applied in the field of biomedicine. However, the weak response of CDs in the near-infrared (NIR) region impedes their practical applications. Here, UV-vis-NIR full-range responsive fluorine and nitrogen doped CDs (N-CDs-F) are designed and synthesized that own a favorable donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) configuration and exhibit excellent two-photon (λ_ex = 1060 nm), three-photon (λ_ex = 1600 nm), and four-photon (λ_ex = 2000 nm) excitation upconversion fluorescence. D-π-A-conjugated CDs prepared by solvothermal synthesis under the assistance of ammonia fluoride are reported and are endowed with larger multiphoton absorption (MPA) cross sections (3PA: 9.55 × 10^-80 cm⁶ s² photon^-2 , 4PA: 6.32 × 10^-80 cm⁸ s³ photon^-3 ) than conventional organic compounds. Furthermore, the N-CDs-F show bright deep-red to NIR fluorescence both in vitro and in vivo, and can even stain the nucleoli of tumor cells. A plausible mechanism is proposed on the basis of the strong inter-dot and intra-dot hydrogen bonds through NH···F that can facilitate the expanding of conjugated sp² domains, and thus not only result in lower highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level but also larger MPA cross sections than those of undoped CDs.
