Tuning the structure, reactivity and magnetic communication of nitride-bridged uranium complexes with the ancillary ligands

f-Block hydride complexes - synthesis, structure and reactivity

Complexes formed between the heaviest and lightest elements in the periodic table yield the f-block hydrides, a unique class of compounds with wide-ranging utility and interest, from catalysis to light-responsive materials and nuclear waste storage. Recent developments in syntheses and analytics, such as exploiting low-oxidation state metal ions and improvements in X-ray diffraction tools, have transformed our ability to understand, access and manipulate these important species. This perspective brings together insights from binary metal hydrides, with molecular solution phase studies on heteroleptic complexes and gas phase investigations. It aims to provide an overview of how the f-element influences hydride formation, structure and reactivity including the sometimes-surprising power of co-ligands to tune their behaviour towards a variety of applications.

Accessing a Highly Reducing Uranium(III) Complex through Cyclometalation

U(IV) cyclometalated complexes have shown rich reactivity, but their low oxidation state analogues still remain rare. Herein, we report the isolation of [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UIII{N(SiMe3)2}2(κ2-C,N-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)], 1, from the reduction of [UIII{N(SiMe)2}3] with KC8 and 2.2.2-cryptand at room temperature. Cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrate that 1 has a reduction potential similar to that of the previously reported [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UII{N(SiMe)2}3] (Epc = -2.6 V versus Fc+/0 and Epc = -2.8 V versus Fc+/0, respectively). Complex 1, indeed, shows similar reducing abilities upon reactions with 4,4'-bipyridine, 2,2'-bipyridine, and 1-azidoadamantane. Interestingly, 1 was also found to be the first example of a mononuclear U(III) complex that is capable of reducing pyridine. In addition, it is shown that a wide variety of substrates can be inserted into the U-C bond, forming new U(III) metallacycles. These results highlight that cyclometalated U(III) complexes can serve as versatile precursors for a broad range of reactivity and for assembling a variety of novel chemical architectures.

Temperature induced single-crystal to single-crystal transformation of uranium azide complexes

The monomeric and dimeric uranium azide complexes {[(CH3)2NCH2CH2NPiPr2]2U(N3)2} (2) and {[(CH3)2NCH2CH2NPiPr2]2U(N3)2}2 (3) were synthesized by treating complex 1 with NaN3 at 60 and -20 °C, respectively. A temperature-induced single-crystal to single-crystal transformation of 3 to 2 was observed. The reduction of either 2 or 3 with KC8 yields a uranium nitride complex {[(CH3)2NCH2CH2NPiPr2]4U2(μ-N)2} (4).

Progress in the chemistry of molecular actinide-nitride compounds

The chemistry of actinide-nitrides has witnessed significant advances in the last ten years with a large focus on uranium and a few breakthroughs with thorium. Following the early discovery of the first terminal and bridging nitride complexes, various synthetic routes to uranium nitrides have since been identified, although the range of ligands capable of stabilizing uranium nitrides still remains scarce. In particular, both terminal- and bridging-nitrides possess attractive advantages for potential reactivity, especially in light of the recent development of uranium complexes for dinitrogen reduction and functionalization. The first molecular thorium bridged-nitride complexes have also been recently identified, anticipating the possibility of expanding nitride chemistry not only to low-valent thorium, but also to the transuranic elements.

Isolation of C1 through C4 derivatives from CO using heteroleptic uranium(iii) metallocene aryloxide complexes

The conversion of C1 feedstock molecules such as CO into commodity chemicals is a desirable, but challenging, endeavour. When the U(iii) complex, [(C₅Me₅)₂U(O-2,6- ^t Bu₂-4-MeC₆H₂)], is exposed to 1 atm of CO, only coordination is observed by IR spectroscopy as well as X-ray crystallography, unveiling a rare structurally characterized f element carbonyl. However, using [(C₅Me₅)₂(MesO)U (THF)], Mes = 2,4,6-Me₃C₆H₂, reaction with CO forms the bridging ethynediolate species, [{(C₅Me₅)₂(MesO)U}₂(μ₂-OCCO)]. While ethynediolate complexes are known, their reactivity has not been reported in much detail to afford further functionalization. For example, addition of more CO to the ethynediolate complex with heating forms a ketene carboxylate, [{(C₅Me₅)₂(MesO)U}₂(μ ₂:κ ²:η ¹-C₃O₃)], which can be further reacted with CO₂ to yield a ketene dicarboxylate complex, [{(C₅Me₅)₂(MesO)U}₂(μ ₂:κ ²:κ ²-C₄O₅)]. Since the ethynediolate showed reactivity with more CO, we explored its reactivity further. A [2 + 2] cycloaddition is observed with diphenylketene to yield [{(C₅Me₅)₂U}₂(OC(CPh₂)C([double bond, length as m-dash]O)CO)] with concomitant formation of [(C₅Me₅)₂U(OMes)₂]. Surprisingly, reaction with SO₂ shows rare S-O bond cleavage to yield the unusual [(O₂CC(O)(SO)]^2- bridging ligand between two U(iv) centres. All complexes have been characterized using spectroscopic and structural methods, and the reaction of the ethynediolate with CO to form the ketene carboxylate has been investigated computationally as well as the reaction with SO₂.

Photochemical Synthesis of Transition Metal-Stabilized Uranium(VI) Nitride Complexes

Uranium nitrides play important roles in dinitrogen activation and functionalization and in chemistry for nuclear fuels, but the synthesis and isolation of the highly reactive uranium(VI) nitrides remains challenging. Here, we report an example of transition metal (TM) stabilized U(VI) nitride complexes, which are generated by the photolysis of azide-bridged U(IV)-TM (TM = Rh, Ir) precursors. The U(V) nitride intermediates with bridged azide ligands are isolated successfully by careful control of the irradiation time, suggesting that the photolysis of azide-bridged U(IV)-TM precursors is a stepwise process. The presence of two U(VI) nitrides stabilized by three TMs is clearly demonstrated by an X-ray crystallographic study. These TM stabilized U(V) nitride intermediates and U(VI) nitride products exhibit excellent stability both in the solid-state and in THF solution under ambient light. Density functional theory calculations show that the photolysis necessary to break the N-N bond of the azide ligands implies excitation from uranium f-orbital to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), as suggested by the strong antibonding N-(N₂) character present in the latter.

Uranium-nitride chemistry: uranium-uranium electronic communication mediated by nitride bridges

Treatment of [U^IV(N₃)(Tren^TIPS)] (1, Tren^TIPS = {N(CH₂CH₂NSiPrⁱ₃)₃}^3-) with excess Li resulted in the isolation of [{U^IV(μ-NLi₂)(Tren^TIPS)}₂] (2), which exhibits a diuranium(IV) 'diamond-core' dinitride motif. Over-reduction of 1 produces [U^III(Tren^TIPS)] (3), and together with known [{U^V(μ-NLi)(Tren^TIPS)}₂] (4) an overall reduction sequence 1 → 4 → 2 → 3 is proposed. Attempts to produce an odd-electron nitride from 2 resulted in the formation of [{U^IV(Tren^TIPS)}₂(μ-NH)(μ-NLi₂)Li] (5). Use of heavier alkali metals did not result in the formation of analogues of 2, emphasising the role of the high charge-to-radius-ratio of lithium stabilising the charge build up at the nitride. Variable-temperature magnetic data for 2 and 5 reveal large low-temperature magnetic moments, suggesting doubly degenerate ground states, where the effective symmetry of the strong crystal field of the nitride dominates over the spin-orbit coupled nature of the ground multiplet of uranium(IV). Spin Hamiltonian modelling of the magnetic data for 2 and 5 suggest U⋯U anti-ferromagnetic coupling of -4.1 and -3.4 cm^-1, respectively. The nature of the U⋯U electronic communication was probed computationally, revealing a borderline case where the prospect of direct uranium-uranium bonding was raised, but in-depth computational analysis reveals that if any uranium-uranium bonding is present it is weak, and instead the nitride centres dominate the mediation of U⋯U electronic communication. This highlights the importance of obtaining high-level ab initio insight when probing potential actinide-actinide electronic communication and bonding in weakly coupled systems. The computational analysis highlights analogies between the 'diamond-core' dinitride of 2 and matrix-isolated binary U₂N₂.

Reactivity of Multimetallic Thorium Nitrides Generated by Reduction of Thorium Azides

Thorium nitrides are likely intermediates in the reported cleavage and functionalization of dinitrogen by molecular thorium complexes and are attractive compounds for the study of multiple bond formation in f-element chemistry, but only one example of thorium nitride isolable from solution was reported. Here, we show that stable multimetallic azide/nitride thorium complexes can be generated by reduction of thorium azide precursors─a route that has failed so far to produce Th nitrides. Once isolated, the thorium azide/nitride clusters, M₃Th═N═Th (M = K or Cs), are stable in solutions probably due to the presence of alkali ions capping the nitride, but their synthesis requires a careful control of the reaction conditions (solvent, temperature, nature of precursor, and alkali ion). The nature of the cation plays an important role in generating a nitride product and results in large structural differences with a bent Th═N═Th moiety found in the K-bound nitride as a result of a strong K-nitride interaction and a linear arrangement in the Cs-bound nitride. Reactivity studies demonstrated the ability of Th nitrides to cleave CO in ambient conditions yielding CN^-.

Assembling Diuranium Complexes in Different States of Charge with a Bridging Redox-Active Ligand

Radical-bridged diuranium complexes are desirable for their potential high exchange coupling and single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, but remain rare. Here we report for the first time radical-bridged diuranium(iv) and diuranium(iii) complexes. Reaction of [U{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃] with 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpym) resulted in the formation of the bpym-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 1. Reduction with 1 equiv. KC₈ reduces the complex, affording [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-bpym)], 2, which is best described as a radical-bridged U^III–bpym˙⁻–U^III complex. Further reduction of 1 with 2 equiv. KC₈, affords [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]₂[{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^III}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 3. Addition of AgBPh₄ to complex 1 resulted in the oxidation of the ligand, yielding the radical-bridged complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym˙⁻)][BPh₄], 4. X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, susceptibility data, EPR and DFT/CASSCF calculations are in line with their assignments. In complexes 2 and 4 the presence of the radical-bridge leads to slow magnetic relaxation.

Convenient routes to dinuclear complexes of uranium where two uranium centers are bridged by the redox-active ligand bpym were identified resulting in unique and stable radical-bridged dimetallic complexes of U(iii) and U(iv) showing SMM behaviour.

Nitrogen activation and cleavage by a multimetallic uranium complex

Multimetallic-multielectron cooperativity plays a key role in the metal-mediated cleavage of N₂ to nitrides (N³⁻). In particular, low-valent uranium complexes coupled with strong alkali metal reducing agents can lead to N₂ cleavage, but often, it is ambiguous how many electrons are transferred from the uranium centers to cleave N₂. Herein, we designed new dinuclear uranium nitride complexes presenting a combination of electronically diverse ancillary ligands to promote the multielectron transformation of N₂. Two heteroleptic diuranium nitride complexes, [K{U^IV(OSi(O^tBu)₃)(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂}₂(μ-N)] (1) and [Cs{U^IV(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(N(SiMe₃)₂)}₂(μ-N)] (3-Cs), containing different combinations of OSi(O^tBu)₃ and N(SiMe₃)₂ ancillary ligands, were synthesized. We found that both complexes could be reduced to their U(iii)/U(iv) analogues, and the complex, [K₂{U^IV/III(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(N(SiMe₃)₂)}₂(μ-N)] (6-K), could be further reduced to a putative U(iii)/U(iii) species that is capable of promoting the 4e⁻ reduction of N₂, yielding the N₂⁴⁻complex [K₃{U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(N(SiMe₃)₂)}₂(μ-N)(μ-η²:η²-N₂)], 7. Parallel N₂ reduction pathways were also identified, leading to the isolation of N₂ cleavage products, [K₃{U^VI(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(N(SiMe₃)₂)( Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> N)}(μ-N)₂{U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(N(SiMe₃)₂)}]₂, 8, and [K₄{(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂U^V)(N)}(μ-NH)(μ-κ²:C,N-CH₂SiMe₂NSiMe₃)-{U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂][K(N(SiMe₃)₂]₂, 9. These complexes provide the first example of N₂ cleavage to nitride by a uranium complex in the absence of reducing alkali metals.

Parallel N₂ reduction pathways were identified, leading to the first example of N₂ cleavage by U without external alkali reducing agents.

Cation assisted binding and cleavage of dinitrogen by uranium complexes

N2 binding affinity decreases markedly in a series of isostructural U(iii)–alkali ions complexes with increasing cation size. N2 binding is undetectable in the Cs analogue, but the first example of cesium-assisted N2 cleavage to bis-nitride was observed at ambient condition.

Synthesis of a heterobimetallic actinide nitride and an analysis of its bonding

Reaction of [K(DME)][Th{N(R)(SiMe₂ CH₂)}₂(NR₂)] (R = SiMe₃) with 1 equiv. of [U(NR₂)₃(NH₂)] (1) in THF, in the presence of 18-crown-6, results in formation of a bridged uranium-thorium nitride complex, [K(18-crown-6)(THF)₂][(NR₂)₃U^IV(μ-N)Th^IV(NR₂)₃] (2), which can be isolated in 48% yield after work-up. Complex 2 is the first isolable molecular mixed-actinide nitride complex. Also formed in the reaction is the methylene-bridged mixed-actinide nitride, [K(18-crown-6)][K(18-crown-6)(Et₂O)₂][(NR₂)₂U(μ-N)(μ-κ²-C,N-CH₂SiMe₂NR)Th(NR₂)₂]₂ (3), which can be isolated in 34% yield after work-up. Complex 3 is likely generated by deprotonation of a methyl group in 2 by [NR₂]^-, yielding the new μ-CH₂ moiety and HNR₂. Reaction of 2 with 0.5 equiv. of I₂ results in formation of a U^V/Th^IV bridged nitride, [(NR₂)₃U^V(μ-N)Th^IV(NR₂)₃] (4), which can be isolated in 42% yield after work-up. The electronic structure of 4 was analyzed with EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and NIR-visible spectroscopy. This analysis demonstrated that the energies of 5f orbitals of 4 are largely determined by the strong ligand field exerted by the nitride ligand.

Nitride protonation and NH3 binding versus N-H bond cleavage in uranium nitrides

The conversion of metal nitrides to NH₃ is an essential step in dinitrogen fixation, but there is limited knowledge of the reactivity of nitrides with protons (H⁺). Herein, we report comparative studies for the reactions of H⁺ and NH₃ with uranium nitrides, containing different types of ancillary ligands. We show that the differences in ancillary ligands, leads to dramatically different reactivity. The nitride group, in nitride-bridged cationic and anionic diuranium(iv) complexes supported by –N(SiMe₃)₂ ligands, is resistant toward protonation by weak acids, while stronger acids result in ligand loss by protonolysis. Moreover, the basic –N(SiMe₃)₂ ligands promote the N–H heterolytic bond cleavage of NH₃, yielding a “naked” diuranium complex containing three bridging ligands, a nitride (N³⁻) and two NH₂ ligands. Conversely, in the nitride-bridged diuranium(iv) complex supported by –OSi(O^tBu)₃ ligands, the nitride group is easily protonated to afford NH₃, which binds the U(iv) ion strongly, resulting in a mononuclear U–NH₃ complex, where NH₃ can be displaced by addition of strong acids. Furthermore, the U–OSi(O^tBu)₃ bonds were found to be stable, even in the presence of stronger acids, such as NH₄BPh₄, therefore indicating that –OSi(O^tBu)₃ supporting ligands are well suited to be used when acidic conditions are required, such as in the H⁺/e⁻ mediated catalytic conversion of N₂ to NH₃.

Ancillary ligands alter the reactivity of U-nitrides with H⁺, relevant to N₂ conversion to NH₃. The amides lead to complete ligand loss and NH₃ activation, while for siloxides, the nitride is protonated to NH₃ leaving the ancillary ligands intact.

Enhanced 5f-δ bonding in [U(C7H7)2]-: C K-edge XAS, magnetism, and ab initio calculations

5f covalency in [U(C₇H₇)₂]^- was probed with carbon K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and electronic structure theory. The results revealed U 5f orbital participation in δ-bonding in both the ground- and core-excited states; additional 5f ϕ-mixing is observed in the core-excited states. Comparisons with U(C₈H₈)₂ show greater δ-covalency for [U(C₇H₇)₂]^-.

Stepwise Reduction of Dinitrogen by a Uranium-Potassium Complex Yielding a U(VI)/U(IV) Tetranitride Cluster

Multimetallic cooperativity is believed to play a key role in the cleavage of dinitrogen to nitrides (N^3-), but the mechanism remains ambiguous due to the lack of isolated intermediates. Herein, we report the reduction of the complex [K₂{[U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₃]₂(μ-O)(μ-η²:η²-N₂)}], B, with KC₈, yielding the tetranuclear tetranitride cluster [K₆{(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂U^IV}₃{(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂U^VI}(μ₄-N)₃(μ₃-N)(μ₃-O)₂], 1, a novel example of N₂ cleavage to nitride by a diuranium complex. The structure of complex 1 is remarkable, as it contains a unique uranium center bound by four nitrides and provides the second example of a trans-N═U^VI═N core analogue of UO₂²⁺. Experimental and computational studies indicate that the formation of the U(IV)/U(VI) tetrauranium cluster occurs via successive one-electron transfers from potassium to the bound N₂^4- ligand in complex B, resulting in N₂ cleavage and the formation of the putative diuranium(V) bis-nitride [K₄{[U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₃]₂(μ-O)(μ-N)₂}], X. Additionally, cooperative potassium binding to the U-bound N₂^4- ligand facilitates dinitrogen cleavage during electron transfer. The nucleophilic nitrides in both complexes are easily functionalized by protons to yield ammonia in 93-97% yield and with excess ¹³CO to yield K¹³CN and KN¹³CO. The structures of two tetranuclear U(IV)/U(V) bis- and mononitride clusters isolated from the reaction with CO demonstrate that the nitride moieties are replaced by oxides without disrupting the tetranuclear structure, but ultimately leading to valence redistribution.

Amidinate Supporting Ligands Influence Molecularity in Formation of Uranium Nitrides

Uranium nitride complexes are attractive targets for chemists as molecular models for the bonding, reactivity, and magnetic properties of next-generation nuclear fuels, but these molecules are uncommon and can be difficult to isolate due to their high reactivity. Here, we describe the synthesis of three new multinuclear uranium nitride complexes, [U(BCMA)₂]₂(μ-N)(μ-κ¹:κ¹-BCMA) (7), [(U(BIMA)₂)₂(μ-N)(μ-NⁱPr)(K₂(μ-η³:η³-CH₂CHNⁱPr)]₂ (8), and [U(BIMA)₂]₂(μ-N)(μ-κ¹:κ¹-BIMA) (9) (BCMA = N,N-bis(cyclohexyl)methylamidinate, BIMA = N,N-bis(iso-propyl)methylamidinate), from U(III) and U(IV) amidinate precursors. By varying the amidinate ligand substituents and azide source, we were able to influence the composition and size of these nitride complexes. ¹⁵N isotopic labeling experiments confirmed the bridging nitride moieties in 7-9 were formed via two-electron reduction of azide. The tetra-uranium cluster 8 was isolated in 99% yield via reductive cleavage of the amidinate ligands; this unusual molecule contains nitrogen-based ligands with formal 1-, 2-, and 3- charges. Additionally, chemical oxidation of the U(IV) precursor U(N₃)(BCMA)₃ yielded the cationic U(V) species [U(N₃)(BCMA)₃][OTf]. Magnetic susceptibility measurements confirmed a U(IV) oxidation state for the uranium centers in the three nitride-bridged complexes and provided a comparison of magnetic behavior in the structurally related U(III)-U(IV)-U(V) series U(BCMA)₃, U(N₃)(BCMA)₃, and [U(N₃)(BCMA)₃][OTf]. At 240 K, the magnetic moments in this series decreased with increasing oxidation state, i.e., U(III) > U(IV) > U(V); this trend follows the decreasing number of 5f valence electrons along this series.

Synthesis, structure, and reactivity of uranium(vi) nitrides

Uranium nitride compounds are important molecular analogues of uranium nitride materials such as UN and UN2 which are effective catalysts in the Haber-Bosch synthesis of ammonia, but the synthesis of molecular nitrides remains a challenge and studies of the reactivity and of the nature of the bonding are poorly developed. Here we report the synthesis of the first nitride bridged uranium complexes containing U(vi) and provide a unique comparison of reactivity and bonding in U(vi)/U(vi), U(vi)/U(v) and U(v)/U(v) systems. Oxidation of the U(v)/U(v) bis-nitride [K2{U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3(μ-N)}2], 1, with mild oxidants yields the U(v)/U(vi) complexes [K{U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3(μ-N)}2], 2 and [K2{U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3}2(μ-N)2(μ-I)], 3 while oxidation with a stronger oxidant ("magic blue") yields the U(vi)/U(vi) complex [{U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3}2(μ-N)2(μ-thf)], 4. The three complexes show very different stability and reactivity, with N2 release observed for complex 4. Complex 2 undergoes hydrogenolysis to yield imido bridged [K2{U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3(μ-NH)}2], 6 and rare amido bridged U(iv)/U(iv) complexes [{U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3}2(μ-NH2)2(μ-thf)], 7 while no hydrogenolysis could be observed for 4. Both complexes 2 and 4 react with H+ to yield quantitatively NH4Cl, but only complex 2 reacts with CO and H2. Differences in reactivity can be related to significant differences in the U-N bonding. Computational studies show a delocalised bond across the U-N-U for 1 and 2, but an asymmetric bonding scheme is found for the U(vi)/U(vi) complex 4 which shows a U-N σ orbital well localised to U[triple bond, length as m-dash]N and π orbitals which partially delocalise to form the U-N single bond with the other uranium.

U2N@I h(7)-C80: fullerene cage encapsulating an unsymmetrical U(iv)[double bond, length as m-dash]N[double bond, length as m-dash]U(v) cluster

For the first time, an actinide nitride clusterfullerene, U₂N@I_h(7)-C₈₀, is synthesized and fully characterized by X-ray single crystallography and multiple spectroscopic methods. U₂N@I_h(7)-C₈₀ is by far the first endohedral fullerene that violates the well-established tri-metallic nitride template for nitride clusterfullerenes. The novel UNU cluster features two UN bonds with uneven bond distances of 2.058(3) Å and 1.943(3) Å, leading to a rare unsymmetrical structure for the dinuclear nitride motif. The combined experimental and theoretical investigations suggest that the two uranium ions show different oxidation states of +4 and +5. Quantum-chemical investigation further reveals that the f¹/f² population dominantly induces a distortion of the UNU cluster, which leads to the unsymmetrical structure. A comparative study of U₂X@C₈₀ (X = C, N and O) reveals that the U–X interaction in UXU clusters can hardly be seen as being formed by classical multiple bonds, but is more like an anionic central ion X^q− with biased overlaps with the two metal ions, which decrease as the electronegativity of X increases. This study not only demonstrates the unique bonding variety of actinide clusters stabilized by fullerene cages, showing different bonding from that observed for the lanthanide analogs, it also reveals the electronic structure of the UXU clusters (X = C, N and O), which are of fundamental significance to understanding these actinide bonding motifs.

A novel actinide cluster, UNU, is stabilized inside a C₈₀ fullerene cage. The U(iv)NU(v) cluster features two UN bonds with uneven bond distances of 2.058(3) Å and 1.943(3) Å, leading to an unsymmetrical structure.

A Single Small-Scale Plutonium Redox Reaction System Yields Three Crystallographically-Characterizable Organoplutonium Complexes

An approach to obtaining substantial amounts of data from a hazardous starting material that can only be obtained and handled in small quantities is demonstrated by the investigation of a single small-scale reaction of cyclooctatetraene, C₈H₈, with a solution obtained from the reduction of Cp'₃Pu (Cp' = C₅H₄SiMe₃) with potassium graphite. This one reaction coupled with oxidation of a product has provided single-crystal X-ray structural data on three organoplutonium compounds as well as information on redox chemistry thereby demonstrating an efficient route to new reactivity and structural information on this highly radioactive element. The crystal structures were obtained from the reduction of C₈H₈ by a putative Pu(II) complex, (Cp'₃Pu^II)^1-, generated in situ, to form the Pu(III) cyclooctatetraenide complex, [K(crypt)][(C₈H₈)₂Pu^III], 1-Pu, and the tetra(cyclopentadienyl) Pu(III) complex, [K(crypt)][Cp'₄Pu^III], 2-Pu. Oxidation of the sample of 1-Pu with Ag(I) afforded a third organoplutonium complex that has been structurally characterized for the first time, (C₈H₈)₂Pu^IV, 3-Pu. Complexes 1-Pu and 3-Pu contain Pu sandwiched between parallel (C₈H₈)^2- rings. The (Cp'₄Pu^III)^- anion in 2-Pu features three η⁵-Cp' rings and one η¹-Cp' ring, which is a rare example of a formal Pu-C η¹-bond. In addition, this study addresses the challenge of small-scale synthesis imparted by radiological and material availability of transuranium isotopes, in particular that of pure metal samples. A route to an anhydrous Pu(III) starting material from the more readily available Pu^IVO₂ was developed to facilitate reproducible syntheses and allow complete spectroscopic analysis of 1-Pu and 2-Pu. Pu^IVO₂ was converted to Pu^IIIBr₃(DME)₂ (DME = CH₃OCH₂CH₂OCH₃) and subsequently Pu^IIIBr₃(THF)_x, which was used to independently synthesize 1-Pu, 2-Pu, and 3-Pu.

Activating Water and Hydrogen by Ligand-Modified Uranium and Neptunium Complexes: A Density Functional Theory Study

Organometallic uranium complexes that can activate small molecules are well-known. In contrast, there are no known organometallic trans-uranium species capable of small-molecule transformations. Using density functional theory, we previously showed that changing actinide-ligand bonds from U-O groups to Np-N- (amide/imido) bonds makes redox small-molecule activation more energetically favorable for Np species. Here, we determine how general this ligand-modulation strategy is for affecting small-molecule activation in Np species. We focus on two reactions, one involving redox transformation of the actinide(s) and the other involving no change in the oxidation state of the actinide(s). Specifically, we considered the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from H₂O by actinide tris-aryloxide species. We also considered H₂ capture and hydride transfer by actinide siloxide and silylamide complexes. For the HER, the barriers for Np(III) systems are much higher than those of U(III). The overall reaction energies are also much worse. An-O → An-N substitutions marginally improve the barriers by 1-4 kcal/mol and more substantially improve the reaction energies by 9-15 kcal/mol. For H₂ capture and hydride transfer, the reaction energies for the U and Np species are similar. For both actinides, like-for-like An-O → An-N substitutions lead to improved reaction energies. Interestingly, in a recent report, it seemingly appears that U-O (siloxide) → U-N (silylamide) leads to complete shutdown of reactivity for H₂ capture and hydride transfer. This observation is reproduced and explained with calculations. The ligand environments of the siloxide and silylamide that were compared are vastly different. The steric environment of the siloxide is conducive for reactivity while the particular silylamide is not. We conclude that small-molecule activation with organometallic neptunium species is achievable with a guided choice of ligands. Additional emphasis should be placed on ligands that can allow for improved transition state barriers.

Ligand-Supported Facile Conversion of Uranyl(VI) into Uranium(IV) in Organic and Aqueous Media

Reduction of uranyl(VI) to U^V and to U^IV is important in uranium environmental migration and remediation processes. The anaerobic reduction of a uranyl U^VI complex supported by a picolinate ligand in both organic and aqueous media is presented. The [U^VI O₂ (dpaea)] complex is readily converted into the cis-boroxide U^IV species via diborane-mediated reductive functionalization in organic media. Remarkably, in aqueous media the uranyl(VI) complex is rapidly converted, by Na₂ S₂ O₄ , a reductant relevant for chemical remediation processes, into the stable uranyl(V) analogue, which is then slowly reduced to yield a water-insoluble trinuclear U^IV oxo-hydroxo cluster. This report provides the first example of direct conversion of a uranyl(VI) compound into a well-defined molecular U^IV species in aqueous conditions.

C-H Bond Activation by an Isolated Dinuclear U(III)/U(IV) Nitride

Synthetic studies of bimetallic uranium nitride complexes with the N(SiMe₃)₂ ligand have generated a new nitride complex of U(III), which is highly reactive toward C-H bonds and H₂. Treatment of the previously reported U(IV)/U(IV) nitride complex [Na(DME)₃][((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(μ-N)(μ-κ²:CN̵-CH₂SiMe₂NSiMe₃)U(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂] (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), 1, with 2 equiv of HNEt₃BPh₃ yielded the cationic U(IV)/U(IV) nitride complex, [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(THF)}₂(μ-N)][BPh₄] (THF = tetrahydrofuran), 3, by successive protonolysis of one N(SiMe₃)₂ ligand and the uranium-methylene bond. Reduction of 3 with KC₈ afforded a rare example of a U(III) nitride, namely, the U(III)/U(IV) complex, [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(THF)}₂(μ-N)], 4. Complex 4 is highly reactive and undergoes 1,2-addition of the C-H bond of the N(SiMe₃)₂ ligand across the uranium-nitride moiety to give the U(III)/U(IV) imide cyclometalate complex, [((Me₃Si)₂N)₂(THF)U(μ-NH)(μ-κ²:C,N̵-CH₂SiMe₂NSiMe₃)U(N(SiMe₃)₂))(THF)], 5. Complex 4 also reacts with toluene at -80 °C to yield an inverse sandwich imide complex arising from C-H bond activation of toluene, [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(THF)}₂(μ-N)][{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U(μ-NH)U(N(SiMe₃)₂)}₂(C₇H₈)], 6. Complex 4 effects the heterolytic cleavage of the C-H of phenylacetylene to yield the imide acetylide [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(THF)}₂(μ-N)][((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(η¹-CCPh)(μ₂-NH)(μ₂-η²:η¹-CCPh)U(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂], 7. Complex 4 also reacts with H₂ to produce an imide hydride U(III)/U(IV) complex, [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(THF)}₂(μ-NH)(μ-H)], 9. These data demonstrate that nitride complexes of U(III) are accessible with amide ligands and show the high reactivity of molecular U(III) nitrides in C-H bond activation.

Intra- and intermolecular interception of a photochemically generated terminal uranium nitride

The photochemically generated synthesis of a terminal uranium nitride species is here reported and an examination of its intra- and intermolecular chemistry is presented. Treatment of the U(iii) complex L^ArUI(DME) ((L^Ar)²⁻ = 2,2′′-bis(Dippanilide)-p-terphenyl; Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) with LiNIm^Dipp ((NIm^Dipp)⁻ = 1,3-bis(Dipp)-imidazolin-2-iminato) generates the sterically congested 3N-coordinate compound L^ArU(NIm^Dipp) (1). Complex 1 reacts with 1 equiv. of Ph₃CN₃ to give the U(iv) azide L^ArU(N₃)(NIm^Dipp) (2). Structural analysis of 2 reveals inequivalent N_α–N_β > N_β–N_γ distances indicative of an activated azide moiety predisposed to N₂ loss. Room-temperature photolysis of benzene solutions of 2 affords the U(iv) amide (N-L^Ar)U(NIm^Dipp) (3) via intramolecular N-atom insertion into the benzylic C–H bond of a pendant isopropyl group of the (L^Ar)²⁻ ligand. The formation of 3 occurs as a result of the intramolecular interception of the intermediately generated, terminal uranium nitride (L^Ar)U(N)(NIm^Dipp) (3′). Evidence for the formation of 3′ is further bolstered by its intermolecular capture, accomplished by photolyzing solutions of 2 in the presence of an isocyanide or PMe₃ to give (L^Ar)U[NCN(C₆H₃Me₂)](NIm^Dipp) (5) and (N,C-L^Ar*)U(N Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> PMe₃)(NIm^Dipp) (6), respectively. These results expand upon the limited reactivity studies of terminal uranium–nitride moieties and provide new insights into their chemical properties.

Photolysis of the U(iv) azide L^ArU(NIm^Dipp) generates a reactive uranium nitride intermediate that can be intercepted by nucleophilic substrates – the first example of intermolecular chemistry of a rare photochemically generated uranium nitride.

Small molecule activation by multimetallic uranium complexes supported by siloxide ligands

The synthesis and reactivity of uranium compounds supported by the tris-tert-butoxysiloxide ligand is surveyed. The multiple binding modes of the tert-butoxysiloxide ligand have proven very well suited to stabilize highly reactive homo- and heteropolymetallic complexes of uranium that have shown an unusual high reactivity towards small molecules such as CO2, CS2, chalcogens and azides. Moreover, these ligands have allowed the isolation of dinuclear nitride and oxide bridged complexes of uranium in various oxidation states. The ability of the tris-tert-butoxysiloxide ligands to trap alkali ions in these nitride or oxide complexes leads to unprecedented ligand based and metal based reduction and functionalization of N2, CO, CO2 and H2.
