Preparation of hydrophobic epoxy-polydimethylsiloxane-graphene oxide nanocomposite coatings for antifouling application

Prevention of marine biofouling in the aquaculture industry by a coating based on polydimethylsiloxane-chitosan and sodium polyacrylate

In this study, a series of novel hydrophobic/hydrophilic hybrid (HHH) coatings with the feature of preventing the fouling phenomenon was fabricated based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), as matrix and two hydrophilic polymers: chitosan and sodium polyacrylate, as dispersed phases. Antibacterial activity, pseudo-barnacle adhesion strength, surface free energy, water contact angle, and water absorption were performed for all samples. Evaluating field immersion of the samples was performed in the natural seawater. The results showed that the dispersed phase containing PDMS coatings showed simultaneously both of antibacterial activity and foul release behavior. Among the samples, the PCs4 coating containing 4 wt% Cs indicated the lowest pseudo barnacle adhesion strength (0.04 MPa), the lowest surface free energy (18.94 mN/m), the highest water contact angle (116.05°), and the percentage of fouling organisms 9.8 % after 30 days immersion. The HHH coatings can be considered as novel eco-friendly antifouling/foul release coatings for aquaculture applications.

Study of Protective Layers Based on Crosslinked Glutaraldehyde/3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane

In this paper, we report the synthesis and characterization of novel coatings based on (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (AP) mixed with different amounts of glutaraldehyde (GA). The synthesized coatings have been layered on a glass substrate and characterized by optical microscopy and roughness measurements, thermogravimetric analyses and differential scanning calorimetry, contact angle analysis, rheological measurement, and an adhesion test. It was observed that the higher the GA content (up to AP:GA ratio of 0.3), the sooner the crosslinking reaction starts, leading to a coating with increased hydrophobic and adhesion features without compromising the final AP cross-linked network. Hence, the obtained results show the effectiveness of AP modification with GA from the perspective of an application as protective coatings.

Polydimethylsiloxane-graphene oxide nanocomposite coatings with improved anti-corrosion and anti-biofouling properties

We demonstrate enhanced anti-corrosion and anti-biofouling properties of graphene oxide-silica-polydimethylsiloxane (GSP) coating on carbon steel (CS). Electrochemical analyses of GSP-coated carbon steel exposed to Gram-positive Bacillus sp., Gram-negative Pseudomonas sp., and freshwater bacterial cultures for 72 h showed a 3-5 orders of magnitude reduction in i_corr values and high impedance values (10⁷ Ω) as compared with polished specimens. The corrosion protection efficiency of GSP-coated specimens was 99.9% against Bacillus sp. and freshwater culture and it was 89.6% against Pseudomonas sp. Evaluation of anti-biofouling property of GSP coating using microbiological and epifluorescence microscopic techniques showed three order reductions in total viable cells on GSP-coated specimens exposed to bacterial cultures. Confocal laser scanning microscopic analysis of biofilm architecture confirmed a significant reduction of biomass and biofilm thickness on GSP-coated CS demonstrating an excellent anti-biofouling activity of GSP.

Mechanical Properties of Protective Coatings against Marine Fouling: A Review

The accumulation of marine organisms on ship hulls, such as microorganisms, barnacles, and seaweeds, represents a global problem for maritime industries, with both economic and environmental costs. The use of biocide-containing paints poses a serious threat to marine ecosystems, affecting both target and non-target organisms driving science and technology towards non-biocidal solutions based on physico-chemical and materials properties of coatings. The review reports recent development of hydrophobic protective coatings in terms of mechanical properties, correlated with the wet ability features. The attention is focused mainly on coatings based on siloxane and epoxy resin due to the wide application fields of such systems in the marine industry. Polyurethane and other systems have been considered as well. These coatings for anti-fouling applications needs to be both long-term mechanically stable, perfectly adherent with the metallic/composite substrate, and capable to detach/destroy the fouling organism. Prospects should focus on developing even “greener” antifouling coatings solutions. These coatings should also be readily addressable to industrial scale-up for large-scale product distribution, possibly at a reasonable cost.

Polymeric Coatings Based on Water-Soluble Trimethylammonium Copolymers for Antifouling Applications

Crosslinked polymeric materials based on a quaternary trimethylammonium compound were developed and evaluated as potential antifouling coatings. For this purpose, two water-soluble random copolymers, poly(4-vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride-co-acrylic acid) P(VBCTMAM-co-AAx) and poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide-co-glycidylmethacrylate) P(DMAm-co-GMAx), were synthesized via free radical polymerization. A water based approach for the synthesis of P(VBCTMAM-co-AAx) copolymer was used. Coatings of the complementary reactive copolymers in different compositions were obtained by curing at 120 °C for one day and were used to coat aquaculture nets. These nets were evaluated in respect to their release rate using Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Total Nitrogen (TN) measurements. Finally, the antifouling efficacy of these newly-composed durable coatings was investigated for 14 days in accelerated conditions. The results showed that this novel polymeric material provides contact-killing antifouling activity for a short time period, whereas it functions efficiently in biofouling removal after high-pressure cleaning.

Dielectric Relaxation Behavior of Silver Nanoparticles and Graphene Oxide Embedded Poly(vinyl alcohol) Nanocomposite Film: An Effect of Ionic Liquid and Temperature

This paper presents the dielectric characteristics of nanocomposite films of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) embedded with silver (Ag) nanoparticles and graphene oxide(GO). The nanocomposite films were fabricated by using the solvent casting approach. The morphological analysis was carried out through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The dielectric relaxation behavior of nanocomposite films was analyzed in the frequency range of 101 to 106 Hz, by varying GO loading. The temperature effect was investigated over the temperature range of 40 to 150 °C. The effect of ionic liquid (IL) was also explored by comparing the dielectric behavior of films fabricated without using ionic liquid. The conductive filler loading variation showed a significant effect on dielectric permittivity(ε'), complex impedance (Z*) and electric conductivity (σac). The obtained results revealed that the dielectric permittivity (ε') increased by incorporating Ag nanoparticles and increasing GO loading in PVA matrix. An incremental trend in dielectric permittivity was observed on increasing the temperature, which is attributed to tunneling and hopping mechanism. With an increase in nanofiller loading, the real part of impedance (Z') and imaginary part of impedance (Z'') were found to decrease. Further, the semicircular nature of Nyquist plot indicated the decrease in bulk resistivity on increasing GO loading, temperature and incorporating ionic liquid. On the basis of above findings, the obtained GO-Ag-PVA nanocomposite films can find promising applications in charge storage devices.
