Impact of coating particles on liquid marble lifetime: reactor engineering approach to evaporation

Liquid marbles are soft matter objects characterised by a liquid droplet enclosed within a hydrophobic particle coating, preventing wetting. This distinctive structure serves as active sites for solid-liquid-gas reactions. However, the impact the chosen coating material has on liquid marble stability, particularly regarding the number of coating layers and material wetting, remains uncertain. There is a need for a modelling approach to predict the overall lifetime considering these coating characteristics. This study reveals that for PTFE liquid marbles evaporating at ambient temperature, smaller coating particles (250 nm) extend their lifetime by forming a multilayered coating. Conversely, using larger particle sizes (200 μm) results in the formation of monolayer liquid marbles with shorter lifetimes than their equivalent naked droplets. Additionally, a higher number of particle layers and a larger contact angle generally enhance the liquid marble's lifetime. For multilayered liquid marbles comprised of smaller particles (250 nm), the particle contact angle is found to have a more significant impact than the number of layers on lifetime extension, whereas the opposite holds true for larger particle sizes (20 μm). A modelling approach using the reactor engineering method for liquid marble evaporation demonstrates excellent agreement with experimental results, yielding an R2 of 0.996. The implementation of this specific model, capable of assessing lifetime across various physical modifications, will enhance our understanding of liquid marble properties before their application in biomedical, microreactor, and green technologies.

Engineered dry powders for the nose-to-brain delivery of transforming growth factor-beta

Nose-to-brain delivery is increasing in popularity as an alternative to other invasive delivery routes. However, targeting the drugs and bypassing the central nervous system are challenging. We aim to develop dry powders composed of nanoparticles-in-microparticles for high efficiency of nose-to-brain delivery. The size of microparticles (between 250 and 350 µm), is desired for reaching the olfactory area, located below the nose-to-brain barrier. Moreover, nanoparticles with a diameter between 150 and 200 nm are desired for traveling through the nose-to-brain barrier. The materials of PLGA or lecithin were used in this study for nanoencapsulation. Both types of capsules showed no toxicology on nasal (RPMI 2650) cells and a similar permeability coefficient (P_app) of Flu-Na, which was about 3.69 ± 0.47 × 10^-6 and 3.88 ± 0.43 × 10^-6 cm/s for TGF-β-Lecithin and PLGA, respectively. The main difference was related to the location of deposition; the TGF-β-PLGA showed a higher drug deposition in the nasopharynx (49.89 ± 25.90 %), but the TGF-β-Lecithin formulation mostly placed in the nostril (41.71 ± 13.35 %).

Liquid Marbles under Electric Fields: New Capabilities for Non-wetting Droplet Manipulation and Beyond

The study of liquid marbles (LMs) composed of stabilizing liquid droplets with solid particles in a gaseous environment has matured into an established area in surface and colloid science. The minimized "solid-liquid-air" triphase interface enables LMs to drastically reduce adhesion to a solid substrate, making them unique non-wetting droplets transportable with limited energy. The small volume, enclosed environment, and simple preparation render them suitable microreactors in industrial applications and processes such as cell culture, material synthesis, and blood coagulation. Extensive application contexts request precise and highly efficient manipulations of these non-wetting droplets. Many external fields, including magnetic, acoustic, photothermal, and pH, have emerged to prepare, deform, actuate, coalesce, mix, and disrupt these non-wetting droplets. Electric fields are rising among these external stimuli as an efficient source for manipulating the LMs with high controllability and a significant ability to contribute further to proposed applications. This Feature Article attempts to outline the recent developments related to LMs with the aid of electric fields. The effects of electric fields on the preparation and manipulation of LMs with intricate interfacial processes are discussed in detail. We highlight a wealth of novel electric field-involved LM-based applications and beyond while also envisaging the challenges, opportunities, and new directions for future development in this emerging research area.

Osmotic evolution of composite liquid marbles

HYPOTHESIS

We hypothesized that the reported evolution (growth) of composite water marbles filled with saline water and coated with lycopodium dispersed in a thin layer of silicone oil is due to the osmotic mass transfer. The hypothesis is supported by the semi-empirical model of osmotic growth of small liquid marbles floating on distilled water.

EXPERIMENTS

Saline composite, silicone oil-coated marbles floating on distilled water grew with time; whereas, composite marbles filled with distilled water floating on aqueous solutions of NaCl lost mass with time and shrunk. However, composite liquid marbles filled with saline water and floating on aqueous solutions of NaCl remained stable during 25 h of the laboratory experiment.

FINDINGS

The reported findings are reasonably attributed to osmotic mass transport through the thin silicon layer filled with lycopodium particles coating the marbles, acting as an osmotic membrane. This is supported by the suggested model for the osmotic growth of marbles.

How to Efficiently Prepare Transparent Lubricant-Infused Surfaces: Inspired by Candle Soot

Poly(dimethylsiloxane) is a common dispersant, modifier, and binder in the field of bioinspired wettability. Herein, the soot production when poly(dimethylsiloxane) was burning was used to directly construct a superhydrophobic coating with the water contact angle reaching 159.7°. After the lubricant was infused, its transparency was greater than 80% of air in the visible light range of the human eye. In addition, the sliding angle and contact angle of the coating were stable for 15 days. It showed excellent oil-locking ability and stability. Even if the superhydrophobic coating was immersed in various organic solvents for 15 days, its hydrophobicity did not change. Moreover, the coating had an excellent anti-fouling ability and self-cleaning ability to meet actual application conditions. Furthermore, the preparation method was simple and rapid, without the participation of fluorine-containing modifiers, and provides a brand-new method for preparing transparent lubricant-infused surfaces.

Mechanical robustness of monolayer nanoparticle-covered liquid marbles

Powder-derived liquid marbles (LMs) are versatile nonwetting systems but are confronted with many limitations in application, as their surface particles are usually large and agglomerated. Recently, sol-gel film-derived LMs have come on the scene that are termed monolayer nanoparticle-covered (mNPc) LMs based on their unique characteristics, revealing great application potential but also generating many questions. Here, mechanical robustness, a very important yet to be addressed property, of mNPc LMs was systematically studied. Rolling, pendant contact, and compression experiments were designed using bare and coated glasses with water contact angles (WCAs) ranging from 23° to 157°. With rupture as a quality criteria, the mechanical robustness of mNPc LMs enhanced with the hydrophobicity of solid surfaces that exerted pressure on them, but maintained much weaker than typical powder LMs until the solid surface was superhydrophobic. In particular, when contacting hydrophilic surfaces of WCAs ≤53°, an mNPc LM did not have the capacity for nonwetting and ruptured immediately, even if the pressure approached zero. This was distinct from powder LMs and indicated that a particle shell as thin as ∼20 nm could not prevent intermolecular attractions between the internal liquid and external solid surface. An interface scenario consisting of solid surface microroughness was proposed to address this issue. On the other hand, mNPc LMs remained unruptured on superhydrophobic surfaces but presented degraded elasticity under extreme compression. Uncovering these properties could be of much help for developments of mNPc LMs and their counterparts, the mNPc liquid plasticines.
