Abstract
The present study introduces a novel fluorescent sensor with an overtone peak reference designed for the detection of mercury (Ⅱ) ions (Hg2+) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The study proposes two novel response mechanisms that hinges on the synergistic effect of cation exchange dissociation (CED) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET). This sensor exhibits a remarkable detection limit of 2.9 nM for Hg2+. Additionally, the sensor reacts with H2S to generate nickel sulfide (NiS) semiconductor nanoparticles, which amplify the fluorescence signal and enable a detection limit of 3.1 nM for H2S. The detection limit for H2S is further improved to 29.1 pM through the surface functionalization of the nanomaterial with pyridine groups (increasing reactivity) and chelation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which enhances the sensor's specificity. This improvement is primarily due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of AuNPs and their affinity for H2S. The single-emission strategy can yield skewed results due to environmental changes, whereas the overtone peak reference strategy enhances result accuracy and reliability by detecting environmental interference through reference emission peaks. In another observation, the low-toxicity dihydropyrene-bipyridine nanorods (TPP-BPY) has been successfully utilized for both endogenous and exogenous H2S detection in vivo using a mouse model. The successful development of TPP-BPY is expected to provide an effective tool for studying the role of H2S in biomedical systems.

Abstract
SO2 and its derivatives play an important role in the antioxidation and anticorrosion of food and medicine. In biological systems, abnormal levels of SO2 lead to the occurrence of many biological diseases. Hence, the development of suitable tools for monitoring SO2 in mitochondria is beneficial for studying the biological effect of SO2 in subcellular organelles. In this research, DHX-1 and DHX-2 are fluorescent probes designed on the basis of dihydroxanthene skeletons. Importantly, DHX-1 (650 nm) and DHX-2 (748 nm) show near-infrared fluorescence response toward endogenous and exogenous SO2, which showed advantages of great selectivity, good sensitivity and low cytotoxicity, and the detection limit is 5.6 μM and 4.08 μM of SO2, respectively. Moreover, DHX-1 and DHX-2 realized SO2 sensing in HeLa cells and zebrafish. Moreover, cell imaging demonstrated that DHX-2 with a thiazole salt structure possesses good mitochondria-targeting ability. Additionally, DHX-2 was perfectly achieved by in situ imaging of SO2 in mice.

Abstract
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a key molecule in organisms that is involved in the regulation of different physiological procedures. Aberrant SO2 causes a variety of diseases, such as cancer and neurodegeneration. Thus, sensitive and selective detection of SO2 is of great importance. Based on the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between green fluorescence carbon dots (GCDs) donor and amide-linked near-infrared fluorescence emissive organic small molecular dye (CDDBT) acceptor, one ratiometric fluorescent nano platform, Mito-GCDs-CDDBT for mitochondria SO2 sensing was constructed. In this FRET sensing system, CDDBT served as the receptor for SO2, and the presence of SO2 enhanced GCDs green fluorescence signal and quenched CDDBT near-infrared fluorescence signal due to the disruption of FRET. Mito-GCDs-CDDBT could sensitively detect SO2 with a detection limit of as low as 0.701 μM. Meanwhile, Mito-GCDs-CDDBT achieved fluorescence imaging to measure the response of cellular exogenous and endogenous SO2 with remarkable mitochondrial targeting. Moreover, Mito-GCDs-CDDBT also realized SO2 sensing in vivo including zebrafish and mice. The as-prepared versatile nanoplatform displayed several advantages, such as mitochondria targeting, FRET-based sensitive detection, and sensing capabilities in biological milieu. Potentially, it could be applied in the diagnostics of SO2 involved diseases.

Abstract
Dynamic sequential control of photoluminescence by supramolecular approaches has become a great issue in supramolecular chemistry. However, developing a systematic strategy to construct polychromatic photoluminescent supramolecular self-assemblies for improving the efficiency and sensitivity of artificial light-harvesting systems still remains a challenge. Here, a series of amphiphilicity-controlled supramolecular self-assemblies with polychromatic fluorescence based on lower-rim hexyl-modified sulfonatocalix[4]arene (SC4A6) and N-alkyl-modified p-phenylene divinylpyridiniums (PVPn, n = 2-7) as efficient light-harvesting platforms is reported. PVPn shows wide ranges of polychromatic fluorescence by co-assembling with SC4A6, whose emission trends significantly depend on the modified alkyl-chains of PVPn. The formed PVPn-SC4A6 co-assemblies as light-harvesting platforms are extremely sensitive for transferring the energy to two near-infrared emissive acceptors, Nile blue (NiB) and Rhodamine 800. After optimizing the amphiphilicity of PVPn-SC4A6 systems, the PVPn-SC4A6-NiB light-harvesting systems achieve an ultrasensitive working concentration for NiB (2 nm) and an ultrahigh antenna effect up to 91.0. Furthermore, the two different kinds of light-harvesting nanoparticles exhibit good performance on near-infrared imaging in the Golgi apparatus and mitochondria, respectively.

Abstract
The discovery of a near-infrared (NIR, 650-900 nm) fluorescent chromophore hemicyanine dye with high structural tailorability is of great significance in the field of detection, bioimaging, and medical therapeutic applications. It exhibits many outstanding advantages including absorption and emission in the NIR region, tunable spectral properties, high photostability as well as a large Stokes shift. These properties are superior to those of conventional fluorogens, such as coumarin, fluorescein, naphthalimides, rhodamine, and cyanine. Researchers have made remarkable progress in developing activity-based multifunctional fluorescent probes based on hemicyanine skeletons for monitoring vital biomolecules in living systems through the output of fluorescence/photoacoustic signals, and integration of diagnosis and treatment of diseases using chemotherapy or photothermal/photodynamic therapy or combination therapy. These achievements prompted researchers to develop more smart fluorescent probes using a hemicyanine fluorogen as a template. In this review, we begin by describing the brief history of the discovery of hemicyanine dyes, synthetic approaches, and design strategies for activity-based functional fluorescent probes. Then, many selected hemicyanine-based probes that can detect ions, small biomolecules, overexpressed enzymes and diagnostic reagents for diseases are systematically highlighted. Finally, potential drawbacks and the outlook for future investigation and clinical medicine transformation of hemicyanine-based activatable functional probes are also discussed.

Abstract
Endogenous sulfur dioxide (SO2) is mainly produced by the enzymatic reaction of sulfur-containing amino acids in mitochondria, which has unique biological activity in inflammatory reaction, regulating blood pressure and maintaining the homeostasis of biological sulfur. It is more and more common to detect monitor SO2 levels by fluorescence probe. In recent years, the indolium hemicyanine skeleton based on the D-π-A structure has been widely used in the development of fluorescent sensors for the detection of SO2. However, subtle changes in the chemical structure of indolium may cause significant differences in SO2 sensing behavior. In this article, we designed and synthesized two probes with different lipophilicities to further study the relationship between the structure and optical properties of hemicyanine dyes. On the basis of previous studies, the structure of indolium hemicyanine skeleton was optimized by introducing -OH group, so that MC-1 and MC-2 had the best response to SO32- in pure PBS system. In addition, the lipophilicity of MC-2 was better than that of MC-1, which enabled it to respond quickly to SO32- and better target mitochondria for SO2 detection. Most importantly, the low detection limits of MC-1 and MC-2 conducive to the detection of endogenous SO2. This work provided an idea for developing SO2 fluorescent sensors with excellent water solubility and low detection limit.

Abstract
There is a challenge in supramolecular chemotherapy for constructing a system equipped with both sufficient protection and high-efficiency release of drugs. To this end, a new strategy of an activatable host-guest conjugate with self-inclusion property is proposed. Based on the binding affinity gain of intramolecular host-guest self-inclusion, an activatable host-guest conjugate was designed, bearing cucurbit[7]uril as the host, an alkyl ammonium moiety as the guest, and the redox-responsive disulfide linkage. Oxaliplatin, a clinical antitumor drug, could be firmly encapsulated by the activatable host-guest conjugate to form the supramolecular drug with high stability. Moreover, oxaliplatin loaded in the activatable host-guest conjugate could be almost completely released by self-inclusion triggered by glutathione in a tumor microenvironment, thus exhibiting comparable antitumor bioactivity with naked oxaliplatin through in vitro cell experiments. It is highly anticipated that this line of research may open new horizons for programmable and on-demand supramolecular chemotherapy with high antitumor efficiency.

Abstract
With the aid of CTAB amphiphile, water-phase artificial light-harvesting systems were fabricated as nanoparticles by the self-assembly of two low-molecular-weight organic molecules: a UPy-functionalized TPE derivative 1 with both supramolecular polymerization and AIE capabilities as a donor and a fluorescent chromophore NiR as an acceptor. Owing to the flexibility of supramolecular self-assembly, tunable emissions including white-light emission could be easily realized with high energy transfer efficiency and the antenna effect.

Abstract
Biothiols and SO2 derivatives, as essential reactive sulfur species (RSS), play vital roles in various physiological processes and have a close network of generation and metabolic pathways among them. To clarify their complex correlations, fluorescent probes to simultaneously detect GSH, Cys, and SO2 derivatives are highly desirable. Herein, we develop the first fluorescent probe (BO-HEM) to simultaneously discriminate GSH, Cys, and SO2 derivatives. The fluorescent probe is designed by integration of hemicyanine and BODIPY fluorophores through an ether bond. The ether bond of the probe is rapidly replaced by thiolates through nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) to generate hemicyanine with NIR fluorescence and sulfur-BODIPY. The amino groups of Cys but not GSH then further replace the thiolate to form amino-BODIPY. As for SO32-, nucleophilic addition to the double bond of BO-HEM generates adduct O-BODIPY with green fluorescence. To further improve the sensing performance, the nanoprobe with increased reactivity and biocompatibility is constructed by encapsulation of BO-HEM into the polymeric micelle. More importantly, by taking advantage of the hydrophilicity of the reaction products, the spectral discrimination was further enhanced to avoid signal interference. The nanoprobe is applied to discriminate biothiols and SO2 derivatives in living cells through three-color fluorescence imaging.
