Abstract
The soil microbial community fulfils various functions, such as nutrient cycling and carbon (C) sequestration, therefore contributing to maintenance of soil fertility and mitigation of global warming. In this context, a major focus of research has been on C, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling. However, from aquatic and other environments, it is well known that other elements beyond C, N, and P are essential for microbial functioning. Nonetheless, for soil microorganisms this knowledge has not yet been synthesised. To gain a better mechanistic understanding of microbial processes in soil systems, we aimed at summarising the current knowledge on the function of a range of essential or beneficial elements, which may affect the efficiency of microbial processes in soil. This knowledge is discussed in the context of microbial driven nutrient and C cycling. Our findings may support future investigations and data evaluation, where other elements than C, N, and P affect microbial processes.

Photodegradation of Antibiotics by Noncovalent Porphyrin-Functionalized TiO 2 in Water for the Bacterial Antibiotic Resistance Risk Management. Int J Mol Sci 2020; 21:ijms21113775. Abstract
Antibiotics represent essential drugs to contrast the insurgence of bacterial infections in humans and animals. Their extensive use in livestock farming, including aquaculture, has improved production performances and food safety. However, their overuse can implicate a risk of water pollution and related antimicrobial resistance. Consequently, innovative strategies for successfully removing antibiotic contaminants have to be advanced to protect human health. Among them, photodegradation TiO2-driven under solar irradiation appears not only as a promising method, but also a sustainable pathway. Hence, we evaluated several composite TiO2 powders with H2TCPP, CuTCPP, ZnTCPP, and SnT4 porphyrin for this scope in order to explore the effect of porphyrins sensitization on titanium dioxide. The synthesis was realized through a fully non-covalent functionalization in water at room conditions. The efficacy of obtained composite materials was also tested in photodegrading oxolinic acid and oxytetracycline in aqueous solution at micromolar concentrations. Under simulated solar irradiation, TiO2 functionalized with CuTCPP has shown encouraging results in the removal of oxytetracycline from water, by opening the way as new approaches to struggle against antibiotic's pollution and, finally, to represent a new valuable tool of public health.

Abstract
A series of novel monocyclic cis-β-lactams were prepared from phenoxyacetic acid as ketene source and imines derived from 1-chloro-3,4-dihydronaphthalene-2-carbaldehyde and respective amine using ethyl 4,5-dichloro-6-oxopyridazine-1(6H)-carboxylate (or 2-ethoxy carbonyl DCPN) as a carboxylic acid activator. This is the first time 2-ethoxy carbonyl DCPN has been used as an acid activator in synthesis of β-lactams. The reaction was entirely diastereoselective leading to the formation cis-β-lactam derivatives. These newly synthesized cis-β-lactam were fully characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS, CHNS and X-ray crystallography study. All this novel compound was also evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against certain strains of Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. These compounds displayed moderate activity against using bacterial and fungal strains.

Abstract
Avibactam, which is the first non-β-lactam β-lactamase inhibitor to be introduced for clinical use, is a broad-spectrum serine β-lactamase inhibitor with activity against class A, class C, and, some, class D β-lactamases. We provide an overview of efforts, which extend to the period soon after the discovery of the penicillins, to develop clinically useful non-β-lactam compounds as antibacterials, and, subsequently, penicillin-binding protein and β-lactamase inhibitors. Like the β-lactam inhibitors, avibactam works via a mechanism involving covalent modification of a catalytically important nucleophilic serine residue. However, unlike the β-lactam inhibitors, avibactam reacts reversibly with its β-lactamase targets. We discuss chemical factors that may account for the apparently special nature of β-lactams and related compounds as antibacterials and β-lactamase inhibitors, including with respect to resistance. Avenues for future research including non-β-lactam antibacterials acting similarly to β-lactams are discussed.

Abstract
The stereochemistry and mechanistic insight in the annulations of one ketene molecule with two imine molecules ([2(k)+2(i)+2(i)] annulation) are studied by using six-membered 3,4-dihydroisoquinoline as an imine probe. A concerted hetero-Diels-Alder cycloaddition mechanism is proposed to explain the stereochemical outcomes. In most cases, the zwitterionic 2-aza-1,3-butadiene-type intermediates, generated from ketenes and imines, undergo endo hetero-Diels-Alder cycloaddition with the second imine molecule. For ketenes with electron-donating substituents, (2,4)-cis-(4,5)-cis-[2(k)+2(i)+2(i)] annuladducts formed stereospecifically, while, for ketenes with electron-accepting substituents, (2,4)-cis-(4,5)-trans-[2(k)+2(i)+2(i)] annuladducts are generated stereospecifically. The [2(k)+2(i)+2(i)] annulations of aryloxyketenes and 3,4-dihydroisoquinoline give stereodivergent products due to the occurrence of the stepwise nucleophilic annulation. However, in the [2(k)+2(i)+2(i)] annulations of seven-membered cyclic imine dibenzo[b,f][1,4]oxazepine, the zwitterionic aza-butadiene-type intermediates exclusively undergo exo hetero-Diels-Alder cycloadditions with another molecule of imine to yield (2,4)-trans-(4,5)-trans-[2(k)+2(i)+2(i)] annuladducts stereospecifically, regardless of the ketene substituents. The mechanistic model not only discloses the nature of the [2(k)+2(i)+2(i)] annulations, but also can be used to explain and predict the stereochemistry of the [2(k)+2(i)+2(i)] annuladducts from different ketenes and imines.

Abstract
In the title solvated compound, C28H19N2O4·C2H6OS, the central β-lactam ring is almost planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.002 Å). It makes dihedral angles of 1.92 (11), 83.23 (12) and 74.90 (10)° with the meth-oxy- and chloro-phenyl rings and the ring plane of the 1H-benzo[de]iso-quinoline-1,3(2H)-dione group [maximum deviation = 0.089 (1)], respectively. An intra-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bond closes an S(6) ring and helps to establish the near coplanarity of the β-lactam and meth-oxy-benzene rings. In the crystal, the components are linked by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, C-H⋯π inter-actions and aromatic π-π stacking inter-actions [centroid-to-centroid distances = 3.6166 (10) and 3.7159 (10) Å], resulting in a three-dimensional network, The dimethyl sulfoxide solvent mol-ecule is disordered over two sets of sites in a 0.847 (2):0.153 (2) ratio.

Abstract
New gold-catalyzed methods using the β-lactam scaffold have been recently developed for the synthesis of different sized heterocycles. This overview focuses on heterocyclization reactions of allenic and alkynic β-lactams which rely on the activation of the allene and alkyne component. The mechanism as well as the regio- and stereoselectivity of the cyclizations are also discussed.

Abstract
Some new mono-and bis-polycyclic aromatic spiro-beta-lactams and bis-non spiro-polycyclic aromatic beta-lactams have been synthesized from imines derived from anthracene-9-carbaldehyde, 2-naphtaldehyde and a ketene derived from 9H-xanthene-9-carboxylic acid and phenoxyacetic acid by a [2+2] cycloaddition reaction. The cycloadducts were characterized by spectral data, including 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, IR and elemental analyses. The configurations of some of these mono-spiro-beta-lactams were established by X-ray crystal analysis.
