Luminescent lanthanide probes for cations and anions: Promises, compromises, and caveats

The long luminescence lifetimes and sharp emission bands of luminescent lanthanide complexes have long been recognized as invaluable strengths for sensing and imaging in complex aqueous biological or environmental media. Herein we discuss the recent developments of these probes for sensing metal ions and, increasingly, anions. Underappreciated in the field, buffers and metal hydrolysis influence the response of many responsive lanthanide probes. The inherent complexities arising from these interactions are further discussed.

Detection of aqueous and gaseous hydrogen sulfide with lanthanide-macrocycle binary complexes

Two novel, discrete lanthanide-macrocycle binary complexes for the detection of hydrogen sulfide are reported. The hydrogen sulfide sensing mechanism utilises the copper sequestration at a secondary binding site, with resulting bimetallic lanthanide(III)/copper(II) complexes (Ln = Eu3+ and Tb3+) exhibiting high selectivity, good sensitivity and excellent reversibility for aqueous hydrogen sulfide. The inclusion of the DO2A macrocycle and 4-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,3-triazole dipicolinic acid ligand, results in a complex with good solubility and stability. The europium(III) complex also displayed a low limit of detection (665 ppb) with a response time of 30 seconds with gaseous hydrogen sulfide. The improved water solubility and stability over a previous complex results in these sensors having the potential for use in environmental monitoring and biological studies for various functional settings.

Nozzle Electrode Point Discharge-Enhanced Oxidation and Portable Gas Phase Molecular Fluorescence Spectrometry for Sensitive Field Detection of Sulfide

It is still a challenge to accurately determine dissolved sulfide due to its susceptibility to contamination and loss during transportation, storage, and analysis in the laboratory, thus highlighting the necessity for its sensitive field analysis. Herein, a robust nozzle electrode point discharge (NEPD) enhanced oxidation coupling with chemical vapor generation (CVG) is described for the highly efficient and flameless conversion of sulfide (S^2-) to SO₂. Subsequently, a portable and low-power consumption gas phase molecular fluorescence spectrometry (GP-MFS) was constructed for the highly selective and sensitive determination of the generated SO₂ via detecting its molecular fluorescence excited by a zinc hollow cathode lamp. Under optimal conditions, a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 μM was obtained for dissolved sulfide with a relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 11) of 2.6%. The accuracy and practicability of the proposed method were validated by the analyses of two certified reference materials (CRMs) and several river and lake water samples with satisfactory recoveries of 99%-107%. This work confirms that NEPD enhanced oxidation is a low energy consumption yet highly efficient method for the flameless oxidation of hydrogen sulfide and thus is suitable for the easy field detection of dissolved sulfide in environmental water by CVG-GP-MFS.

A portable electrochemical microsensor for in-site measurement of dissolved oxygen and hydrogen sulfide in natural water

Dissolved oxygen (O₂) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) are two important indicators of water quality, their levels are of intimate dependence and varying over time. It is of great significance to monitoring of dissolved O₂ and H₂S simultaneously in natural water, yet has not been reported because of lack of effective approaches. In this work, a portable electrochemical microsensor was developed for simultaneously quantifying dissolved O₂ and H₂S. Here, Pd@Ni nanoparticles (NPs) were self-assembled onto the microelectrode by MXene titanium carbide (Ti₃C₂T_x), which were of responsibility towards O₂ and H₂S detection within single electrochemical reduction process. On this regard, Pd NPs facilitated catalyzing the electrochemical reduction of O₂, while Ni NPs were employed as recognition element for H₂S detection. With the electrochemical reduction sweep, the initial application of a positive voltage rendered the Ni to be oxidized to be Ni ions, contributing to their following capture of surrounding S^2- to form nickel sulfide. Nickel sulfide with highly electrochemical activity were capable of generating detecting reduction current. In consequence, the as-designed microsensor can simultaneously determine O₂ concentrations ranging from 36 to 318 μM and H₂S levels ranging from 0.1 to 2.5 μM with high selectivity. Finally, the portable microsensor was successfully applied to simultaneous detection dissolved O₂ and H₂S in natural water in-site, the results of which were comparable to the classical methods.

Detection of gases and organic vapors by cellulose-based sensors

The growing interest in the development of cost-effective, straightforward, and rapid analytical systems has found cellulose-based materials, including cellulose derivatives, cellulose-based gels, nanocellulosic materials, and the corresponding (nano)cellulose-based composites, to be valuable platforms for sensor development. The present work presents recent advances in the development of cellulose-based sensors for the determination of volatile analytes and derivatives of analytical relevance. In particular, strategies described in the literature for the fabrication and modification of cellulose-based substrates with responsive materials are summarized. In addition, selected contributions reported in the field of paper-based volatile sensors are discussed, with a particular emphasis on quick response (QR) code paper-based platforms, intelligent films for food freshness monitoring, and sensor arrays for volatile discrimination purposes. Furthermore, analytical strategies devised for the determination of ionic species by in situ generation of volatile derivatives in both paper-based analytical devices (PADs) and microfluidic PADs will also be described.

A highly selective colorimetric and fluorescent probe Eu(tdl)2abp for H2S sensing: Application in live cell imaging and natural water

Using 4-([2,2': 6', 2'- terpyridin] -4'-yl) -N, N-dimethylaniline (tdl) as auxiliary ligand and 6-azido-2,2'-bipyridine (abp) as recognition ligand, a europium complex fluorescent probe Eu(4-([2,2': 6', 2'-terpyridin] -4' -yl) -N, N-dimethylaniline)₂-6-azido-2,2'-bipyridine Eu(tdl)₂abp for efficient and specific recognition of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) was successfully synthesized and characterized by NMR and MS. Eu(tdl)₂abp represented "on-off" fluorescence signals for H₂S and its color changes could be identified with naked eyes. Eu(tdl)₂abp had short response time (2 min) to H₂S, high selectivity and good anti-interference, large stokes shift (207 nm). In various samples, when H₂S existed, the azide group was reduced to amine group, resulting in closed fluorescence signal, and the fluorescence intensity reached the degree of quenching without being affected by other interference. At the same time, there was a good linear relationship between relative fluorescence intensity and H₂S concentration with the detection limit (LOD) of 0.64 μM. The sensing mechanism of Eu(tdl)₂abp to detect H₂S was characterized by ¹H NMR and HR-MS. Eu(tdl)₂abp was used with success for the sensitive detection of H₂S in natural water and living cells.

Self-assembly-induced luminescence of Eu3+-complexes and application in bioimaging

Design and engineering of highly efficient emitting materials with assembly-induced luminescence, such as room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE), have stimulated extensive efforts. Here, we propose a new strategy to obtain size-controlled Eu3+-complex nanoparticles (Eu-NPs) with self-assembly-induced luminescence (SAIL) characteristics without encapsulation or hybridization. Compared with previous RTP or AIE materials, the SAIL phenomena of increased luminescence intensity and lifetime in aqueous solution for the proposed Eu-NPs are due to the combined effect of self-assembly in confining the molecular motion and shielding the water quenching. As proof of concept, we also show that this system can be further applied in bioimaging, temperature measurement and HClO sensing. The SAIL activity of the rare-earth (RE) system proposed here offers a further step forward on the roadmap for the development of RE light conversion systems and their integration in bioimaging and therapy applications.
