Unravelling the local structure of catalytic Fe-oxo clusters stabilized on the MOF-808 metal organic-framework

Observation of a Reversible Order-Order Transition in a Metal-Organic Framework - Ionic Liquid Nanocomposite Phase-Change Material

Metal-organic framework (MOF) composite materials containing ionic liquids (ILs) have been proposed for a range of potential applications, including gas separation, ion conduction, and hybrid glass formation. Here, an order transition in an IL@MOF composite is discovered using CuBTC (copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) and [EMIM][TFSI] (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide). This transition - absent for the bare MOF or IL - provides an extended super-cooling range and latent heat at a capacity similar to that of soft paraffins, in the temperature range of ≈220 °C. Structural analysis and in situ monitoring indicate an electrostatic interaction between the IL molecules and the Cu paddle-wheels, leading to a decrease in pore symmetry at low temperature. These interactions are reversibly released above the transition temperature, which reflects in a volume expansion of the MOF-IL composite.

Hidden structures: a driving factor to achieve low thermal conductivity and high thermoelectric performance

The long-range periodic atomic arrangement or the lack thereof in solids typically dictates the magnitude and temperature dependence of their lattice thermal conductivity (κlat). Compared to crystalline materials, glasses exhibit a much-suppressed κlat across all temperatures as the phonon mean free path reaches parity with the interatomic distances therein. While the occurrence of such glass-like thermal transport in crystalline solids captivates the scientific community with its fundamental inquiry, it also holds the potential for profoundly impacting the field of thermoelectric energy conversion. Therefore, efficient manipulation of thermal transport and comprehension of the microscopic mechanisms dictating phonon scattering in crystalline solids are paramount. As quantized lattice vibrations (i.e., phonons) drive κlat, atomistic insights into the chemical bonding characteristics are crucial to have informed knowledge about their origins. Recently, it has been observed that within the highly symmetric 'averaged' crystal structures, often there are hidden locally asymmetric atomic motifs (within a few Å), which exert far-reaching influence on phonon transport. Phenomena such as local atomic off-centering, atomic rattling or tunneling, liquid-like atomic motion, site splitting, local ordering, etc., which arise within a few Å scales, are generally found to drastically disrupt the passage of heat carrying phonons. Despite their profound implication(s) for phonon dynamics, they are often overlooked by traditional crystallographic techniques. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the fundamental aspects of heat transport and explore the status quo of innately low thermally conductive crystalline solids, wherein the phonon dynamics is majorly governed by local structural phenomena. We also discuss advanced techniques capable of characterizing the crystal structure at the sub-atomic level. Subsequently, we delve into the emergent new ideas with examples linked to local crystal structure and lattice dynamics. While discussing the implications of the local structure for thermal conductivity, we provide the state-of-the-art examples of high-performance thermoelectric materials. Finally, we offer our viewpoint on the experimental and theoretical challenges, potential new paths, and the integration of novel strategies with material synthesis to achieve low κlat and realize high thermoelectric performance in crystalline solids via local structure designing.

Transition metal and lanthanide modified MOF-808 for barcode design

This study explores the utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), particularly those incorporating lanthanide-based elements for their fluorescence capabilities, to create an advanced barcode system. By exploiting the modular nature of MOFs, we have developed a material capable of dynamic information encoding and robust against counterfeiting efforts. We introduce a novel barcode prototype that exhibits visible color shifts and fluorescence modulation when exposed to a specific sequence of chemical and thermal stimuli. The barcode is composed of MOF-808, which is modified with transition metals like iron or cobalt, and europium cations. These components are embedded within polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to form a composite. This embedding process ensures that the MOF particles remain reactive to specific trigger molecules, enabling a distinct read-out sequence. The decoding process, involving exposure to ammonia, heating at 120 °C, and treatment with HCl, triggers observable changes in fluorescence and color, depending on the transition metal used. Our investigations with Eu,Co-MOF-808, and Eu,Fe-MOF-808 composites have resulted in the creation of a barcode prototype that demonstrates the feasibility of using europium-modified and unmodified transition metal modified MOF-808@PVDF composites for enhanced security applications.

Copper single-site engineering in MOF-808 membranes for improved water treatment

MOF-808, a metal-organic framework containing Zr6O8 clusters, can serve as a secure anchoring point for stabilizing copper single-sites with redox activity, thus making it a promising candidate for catalytic applications. In this study, we target the incorporation of Cu-MOF-808 into a mixed-matrix membrane for the degradation of tyrosol, an emerging endocrine-disrupting compound commonly found in water sources, through Fenton reactions, developing innovative technologies for water treatment. We successfully demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach by preparing catalytic membranes with minimal metal leaching, which is one of the primary challenges in developing copper-based Fenton heterogeneous catalysts. Furthermore, we utilized advanced synchrotron characterization techniques, combining X-ray absorption spectroscopy and pair distribution function analysis of X-ray total scattering, to provide evidence of the atomic structure of the catalytic copper sites within the membranes. Additionally, we observed the presence of weak interactions between the MOF-808 and the organic polymer, potentially explaining their enhanced stability.

Transient intermediate in the formation of an amorphous metal-organic framework

Amorphous metal-organic frameworks are rarely formed via direct synthesis. Our limited understanding of their atomic assembly in solution prevents full exploitation of their unique structural complexity. Here, we use in situ synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy with sub-second time resolution to probe the formation of the amorphous Fe-BTC framework. Using a combination of spectral fingerprinting, linear combination analysis, and principal component analysis coupled with kinetic analyses, we reveal a multi-stage formation mechanism that, crucially, proceeds via the generation of a transient intermediate species.

Atomic metal coordinated to nitrogen-doped carbon electrocatalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells: a perspective on progress, pitfalls and prospectives

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells require reduced construction costs to improve commercial viability, which can be fueled by elimination of platinum as the O2 reduction electrocatalyst. The past 10 years has seen significant developments in synthesis, characterisation, and electrocatalytic performance of the most promising alternative electrocatalyst; single metal atoms coordinated to nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C). In this Perspective we recap some of the important achievements of M-N-Cs in the last decade, as well as discussing current knowledge gaps and future research directions for the community. We provide a new outlook on M-N-C stability and atomistic understanding with a set of original density functional theory simulations.

Interfacial Bonding between a Crystalline Metal-Organic Framework and an Inorganic Glass

The interface within a composite is critically important for the chemical and physical properties of these materials. However, experimental structural studies of the interfacial regions within metal-organic framework (MOF) composites are extremely challenging. Here, we provide the first example of a new MOF composite family, i.e., using an inorganic glass matrix host in place of the commonly used organic polymers. Crucially, we also decipher atom-atom interactions at the interface. In particular, we dispersed a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) within a phosphate glass matrix and identified interactions at the interface using several different analysis methods of pair distribution function and multinuclear multidimensional magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. These demonstrated glass-ZIF atom-atom correlations. Additionally, carbon dioxide uptake and stability tests were also performed to check the increment of the surface area and the stability and durability of the material in different media. This opens up possibilities for creating new composites that include the intrinsic chemical properties of the constituent MOFs and inorganic glasses.

Survival of Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework Crystallinity at Extreme Pressures

Recent research on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has shown a shift from considering only the crystalline high-porosity phases to exploring their amorphous counterparts. Applying pressure to a crystalline MOF is a common method of amorphization, as MOFs contain large void spaces that can collapse, reducing the accessible surface area. This can be either a desired change or indeed an unwanted side effect of the application of pressure. In either case, understanding the MOF's pressure response is extremely important. Three such MOFs with varying pore sizes (UiO-66, MOF-808, and NU-1000) were investigated using in situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Partial crystallinity was observed in all three MOFs above 10 GPa, along with some recovery of crystallinity on return to ambient conditions if the frameworks were not compressed above thresholds of 13.3, 14.2, and 12.3 GPa for UiO-66, MOF-808, and NU-1000, respectively. This threshold was marked by an unexpected increase in one or more lattice parameters with pressure in all MOFs. Comparison of compressibility between MOFs suggests penetration of the pressure-transmitting oil into MOF-808 and NU-1000. The survival of some crystallinity above 10 GPa in all of these MOFs despite their differing pore sizes and extents of oil penetration demonstrates the importance of high-pressure characterization of known structures.

Fundamental Perspectives on the Electrochemical Water Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks

HIGHLIGHTS

The recent development and implementation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based materials in electrochemical water applications are reviewed. The critical factors that affect the performances of MOFs in the electrochemical reactions, sensing, and separations are highlighted. Advanced tools, such as pair distribution function analysis, are playing critical roles in unraveling the functioning mechanisms, including local structures and nanoconfined interactions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a family of highly porous materials possessing huge surface areas and feasible chemical tunability, are emerging as critical functional materials to solve the growing challenges associated with energy-water systems, such as water scarcity issues. In this contribution, the roles of MOFs are highlighted in electrochemical-based water applications (i.e., reactions, sensing, and separations), where MOF-based functional materials exhibit outstanding performances in detecting/removing pollutants, recovering resources, and harvesting energies from different water sources. Compared with the pristine MOFs, the efficiency and/or selectivity can be further enhanced via rational structural modulation of MOFs (e.g., partial metal substitution) or integration of MOFs with other functional materials (e.g., metal clusters and reduced graphene oxide). Several key factors/properties that affect the performances of MOF-based materials are also reviewed, including electronic structures, nanoconfined effects, stability, conductivity, and atomic structures. The advancement in the fundamental understanding of these key factors is expected to shed light on the functioning mechanisms of MOFs (e.g., charge transfer pathways and guest-host interactions), which will subsequently accelerate the integration of precisely designed MOFs into electrochemical architectures to achieve highly effective water remediation with optimized selectivity and long-term stability.

Synergistic binding sites in a metal-organic framework for the optical sensing of nitrogen dioxide

Luminescent metal-organic frameworks are an emerging class of optical sensors, able to capture and detect toxic gases. Herein, we report the incorporation of synergistic binding sites in MOF-808 through post-synthetic modification with copper for optical sensing of NO₂ at remarkably low concentrations. Computational modelling and advanced synchrotron characterization tools are applied to elucidate the atomic structure of the copper sites. The excellent performance of Cu-MOF-808 is explained by the synergistic effect between the hydroxo/aquo-terminated Zr₆O₈ clusters and the copper-hydroxo single sites, where NO₂ is adsorbed through combined dispersive- and metal-bonding interactions.

Revisiting Vibrational Spectroscopy to Tackle the Chemistry of Zr6O8 Metal-Organic Framework Nodes

The metal-organic framework MOF-808 contains Zr6O8 nodes with a high density of vacancy sites, which can incorporate carboxylate-containing functional groups to tune chemical reactivity. Although the postsynthetic methods to modify the chemistry of the Zr6O8 nodes in MOFs are well known, tackling these alterations from a structural perspective is still a challenge. We have combined infrared spectroscopy experiments and first-principles calculations to identify the presence of node vacancies accessible for chemical modifications within the MOF-808. We demonstrate the potential of our approach to assess the decoration of MOF-808 nodes with different catechol-benzoate ligands. Furthermore, we have applied advanced synchrotron characterization tools, such as pair distribution function analyses and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, to resolve the atomic structure of single metal sites incorporated into the catechol groups postsynthetically. Finally, we demonstrate the catalytic activity of these MOF-808 materials decorated with single copper sites for 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions.
